Formatting console output text

Is it possible to align output text to the console?
I'm printing a UI to the console which gives users the ability to select an option
System.out.printf("*********************%n");
System.out.printf("Welcome to the system%n");
System.out.printf("Please select an select an option%n");
System.out.printf("1 - Login with username and password%n");
System.out.printf("2 - Create an account%n");
System.out.printf("3 - Options%n");
System.out.printf("4 - Exit%n");
System.out.printf("*********************%n");
I was wondering if I can format this text to be aligned to a certain side. Or columns if not, but I prefer alignment. Also is there a more efficient way to write a large paragraph to be output(like above)?
Thank you!

To the plain-jane console? If that's what you're asking, then you should really be creating a GUI app, not a console-based one.

  • Regarding Date format in output text file

    Hi Frnds,
    i am taking the data from vbak table into one internal table T_vbak, in that i am having vdatu field also, and after that using GUI_Download function module i am downloading that internal table data to one text file into presentation server.
    But the date format is displaying in yyyymmdd format in the text file, but i want the format like mm/dd/yyyy in the text file, can anybody plz help me....

    Hey Bala,
    You can use the following conversion routine for converting the date from yyyymmdd format into mm/dd/yyyy.
    data: l_date(10) type c.
    Loop at t_vbak into wa_vbak.
    CONCATENATE wa_vbak-vdatu4(2) wa_vbak-vdatu6(2) wa_vbak-vdatu(4) INTO l_date SEPARATED BY '/'.
    wa_vbak-vdatu = l_date.
    modify t_vbak from wa_vbak.
    Endloop.

  • Formatting of output text file.

    I am writing values of variables to a text file.  I also have column headings.  Some of the column headings are long, perhaps 14 characters.  The field for my variable values is only 8 characters long.  Thus I would like to install a tab or two between my column headings so that they line up w my values.  How may I do that?

    You can specify a length with the format string.
    So, if the longest string is 14 characters, specify %14s as the format string. Your text will be right justified. If you want the text to appear at the left, use a format specifier of %-14s.
    Don't play around with multiple TABs, it will make the file difficult to read in other apps like Excel.
    Now is the right time to use %^<%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S%3uZ>T

  • How to redirect the tomcat (5.0) console output to a text file

    Hello,
    I am looking for a way of redirecting the tomcat console output [the System.out.println("xyzabc")s from the java classes running on the container] to a text file.
    The reason is that the programmers need to have that consoles output and the server (windows) have to be rebooted often (no wonder: windows) and then Tomcat start as a service -> console is not visible.
    Thanks!

    The console out put should still be in the log files if tomcat is running as a windows service. It will either be in logs\stdout_xxxx.log and logs\stderr_xxxx.log or in logs\catalina.xxxx.log.
    If you are using 5.5.
    It will either be in logs\stdout.log and logs\stderr.log or in logs\catalina.out.

    Do you mean you have use process class to start "cmd prompt" And want to display some output in it?
    If so, there is no need to use RedirectStandardOutput property. This property means the output of an application is written to the
    Process.StandardOutput stream.
    // Setup the process with the ProcessStartInfo class.
    ProcessStartInfo start = new ProcessStartInfo();
    start.FileName = @"C:\7za.exe"; // Specify exe name not cmd exe.
    start.UseShellExecute = false;
    start.RedirectStandardOutput = true;
    // Start the process.
    using (Process process = Process.Start(start))
    // Read in all the text from the process with the StreamReader.
    using (StreamReader reader = process.StandardOutput)
    string result = reader.ReadToEnd();
    Console.Write(result);

    Hi Petes,
    Thanks for you response. I am very new to java. I just started learning jsp and have bit knowledge of swing. I am confused how to use jsp and swing componenets together. Can you please guide me a bit?
    Also i am using AJAX to update form field. I am able to work with the rest except bringing the console output in the text area.
    Do you think i have some other way to do it?
    Do you think, it is a good idea , if I will save the output strings in a file and with the help of jsp i can read the file in textarea.

  • Iterate over some output text in a panel Grid

    Hello folks
    Are any of you doing something like this in JSC
    <code>
    <%
    for (int i = 0; i<4; i++)
    %>
    <h:panelGrid bgcolor="gray" binding="#{Page1.gridPanel1}" id="gridPanel1" style="height: 73px; left: 0px; top: 120px; position: absolute" width="216">
    <h:outputText binding="#{Page1.outputText1}" id="outputText1" value="Author"/>
    <h:outputText binding="#{Page1.outputText2}" id="outputText2" value="Summary"/>
    <h:outputText binding="#{Page1.outputText3}" id="outputText3" value="Article link"/>
    </h:panelGrid>
    <%
    %>
    </code>
    What I'm trying to do is something like data table, except that I want to have control over where the output text goes, and how it is presented.
    In data table all I get is a predefined table (Im unable to format it the way I would like) so lets do it the old way - link some output text to a database or maybe an array which holds the "data" then loop over it x number of times to display the content kind of like this
    For (less than x times) do
    Author name
    Date article written
    Summary article
    Link to more of the article
    This would be the way I used to this, now Im curios how this is done using JSF
    <% loop here %> does not mix well in Creator, error not well formed
    Im unable to format a data table in any respect except number of rows and stuff
    So Any suggestion on how to really do this effectively in JSC/JSF
    Thanks Bjorn

    Hi,
    Actually, you have quite a bit of flexibility with the Data Table component.
    You can add more than one component to a column,
    and you can use an outputText component to hold
    HTML formatting tags, such as <br>.
    Note: you must uncheck the escape attribute.
    And since the data table component produces an HTML <table> tag,
    you can also control style with additional style sheet classes (see Tor's blog).
    For an example of using the Data Table component
    to display the resuts of the Google search web services,
    See Beyond the Book at this URL:
    http://www.asgteach.com/download/beyond.pdf
    The relevant description is section A.5 beginning on page 24.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to print console output

    Hi, I have a JSP page and I would like to print STDOUT to the page. Is this possible?
    I've seen a few methods and none work for me:
    BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(System.out);
    String input = reader.readLine();
    out.println(input);*** Error: Type BufferedReader was not found.
    FileOutputStream out;
                    PrintStream ps; // declare a print stream object
                    try {
                     // Create a new file output stream
                    out = new FileOutputStream("myfile.txt");
                            // Connect print stream to the output stream
                            ps = new PrintStream(out);
                            ps.println ("This data is written to a file:");
                System.err.println ("Write successfully");
                            ps.close();
                    catch (Exception e){
                            System.err.println ("Error in writing to file");
                    }*** Error: Duplicate declaration of local variable "out".
    *** Error: The type of the left-hand side in this assignment, "javax/servlet/jsp/JspWriter", is not compatible with the type of the right-hand side expression, "java/io/FileOutputStream".
    *** Error: No match was found for constructor "PrintStream(javax.servlet.jsp.JspWriter)".
    So what's next?
    How can I call the console without writing to a file first?
    I would like AJAX to show console output in real-time.

    Thanks for your help.
    The reason I have the script to write to a file is because it's the closest I could find to what I want. Ideally, I would be able to run a script that prints to the console but I want to grab the system.out going to the console and display it on the page.
    Basically, I want the page to act as a console but not redirect the output (I want it to still go to the console) and I don't want it in a text file that the page reads.
    So for example, the page loads and while that is occurring, the server grabs the console output and prints to the page. Then I run a function on the page that prints to the console and on the refresh, print the updated output. Ideally, I would restrict the output that was relevant to the page's functions and ignore every output to the console but I'm not (trying to be) picky.
    So how would that work?
    Pseudo-code:
    for (int i=0;i < System.out().length(); i++) {
            String grabbedtext += System.out().toString();
    }out.println(grabbedtext);

  • Weird SSRS Format Date Output in Matrix report Header

    For one of my Matrix reports, the column headers are Dates which I am trying to format in the form of 'Mon 07' i.e. short date name followed by date value.
    For this I am using the expression - =Format(CDate(Fields!WorkedOnDate.Value),"ddd") I then wanted to trim the right 3 letters.
    I am getting weird output. Here is what I am getting for one week- Tue, We2, T12u,ri,SaA,Sun,7on
    Any idea what is going wrong? This was asked in this link but that answer didn't help - The
    date formats do not seem to work in SSRS

    Hey Visakh, I realize my mistake now. I was adding the expression as part of Number-> Format property of text box instead of directly on the text box property. Thank you.

  • Formatting Binary Output

    I want to format binary output in text fields to confrom to the following scheme:
    head data1 data2 return offSet id
    6 bits 5 bits 5 bits 5 bits 5 bits 6 bits
    where the first row are field names and the second is the filed width.
    What that means is that, using the value 1 (base 10) as an example, a 6 bit filed will read 000001 and so a 5 bit field will read 00001.
    My program converts to binary no worries, but how do I enforce the width requirements? I am using Integer.toBinaryString(int) to convert, if that helps.
    Thanks

    public String intToJustifiedBinaryString(int number, int length)
      StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer(Integer.toBinaryString(number));
      while (buffer.length() < length)
          buffer.insert(0, "0");
      return buffer.toString();It works great! Now for the learning. I looked up StringBuffer and found this explanation:
    StringBuffer(String str)
    Constructs a string buffer so that it represents the same sequence of characters as the string argument; in other words, the initial contents of the string buffer is a copy of the argument string.
    What I am trying to figure out is how it is not overwriting what already exists in the buffer. Lets pretend with int = 7 and a 6 bit field.
    So initially, buffer.length() = 3 and my buffer looks like 1 1 1.
    From the API: The principal operations on a StringBuffer are the append and insert methods, which are overloaded so as to accept data of any type. Each effectively converts a given datum to a string and then appends or inserts the characters of that string to the string buffer. The append method always adds these characters at the end of the buffer; the insert method adds the characters at a specified point.
    If I am specifying my insert point as 0 (insert(int offset, char c) Inserts the string representation of the char argument into this string buffer.) How am I not overwriting one of my bits comprising my binary 7? My only guess is that insert operation first shifts what is already there over the necessary amount, based on the length of what is being inserted, before inserting at the specified point. I have read nothing to support this theory. Please let me know if it is correct.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Console output on Solaris 7 and Solaris 8

    Hi All...
    It seems to me strange and impossible, but...
    I load 32-bit driver : add_drv -m '* 0600 root root' <driver_name> on Solaris 7 and 8.
    Both systems are 32-bit. The same source, the same define flags ( I use -D_KERNEL -DSUNDDI ).
    On 8 I can see my driver's console output, on 7 - no way!
    I produce console output using function cmn_err(CE_NOTE, format ...);
    One interesting thing else: after my driver has come in kernel refuses to attach it, so the driver remains unattached. After rem_drv I checked dmesg output, there I saw this :
    NOTICE: <driver name>: 64-bit driver module not found
    What could it be?? Any suggestions are welcome
    Thank you in advance
