Formatting Failed Error - Break Point Error

I have a large project I'm trying to burn on a dual layer dvd. I keep getting the following error:
Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. See the DVD Studio Pro User's Manual for more info.
Well I did that and tried to move the break point marker to where I thought the break may occur according to the VTS outline view. I usually use automatic for this but it's not working this time.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

When you prepare to Format the disk: Look at the Disc/Volume tab: Dual-Layer Break Point drop down menu.
Are any of the chapter markers in the middle tracks visible in black (ie not greyed out)? If so select a suitable one of these and you should be OK. If they are all greyed out then you need to create a chapter marker in an area of the movie that should be at about the mid point of the movie. Try to select a point where a slight pause would not be distracting.

I have a really big DSP4 projects with a 78 min feature, and about 15 more 2-5min clips. For some reason, I am having a really hard time setting a break point.
If I choose automatic break, I get:

...and if I set the breakpoint myself, I get:
"Formatting was not successful. Layer 0 exceeds the maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition."

Hi, I definitely understand what you are going trough, I spent a whole week trying to find the brake point, after reviewing my tutorial I realized wherre the problem was. Devide the total lenght of the movie by 2 and then add about 5 to 10% to the 50%, than start adding markers on the timeline close together, you are allowed 99 markers, hilight each marker after being used so that you can keep track, if you are reaching the disc limit, than you may be limited to a few choises.I hope this works for you.

Suitable marker break point error for dual layer DVD!

I'm a new FCP user of a few months and DVDSP of one week.
I have read the manual again and again and I am still not sure how to add a suitable break point. I added a chapter marker and set it as a dual layer break point, not sure if that is correct. Quicktime Movie is 5.9 GB, it does everything except burn to DVD in SP. I can burn this movie in IDVD though. Please help me!

Will compressor or Mpeg cause degeneration of picture quality?
If you put it on DVD-Video, you have to convert it to MPEG2 (with either Compressor or by letting DVDSP convert it). It will lose quality as a result. The only way to minimize this is to use as high a bitrate for your MPEG2 file as possible. Compressor has some presets labeled 60 min, 90 min, and 120 min, that will allow movies of that length to fit onto a single-layer DVD.
You should probably re-read the opening chapters of the DVDSP manual; they cover this important and fundamental information relatively well.

Bitrate and break point problems

I am trying to create a dual layer dvd containing 37 chapters (all average 3 min. a piece) and 2 audio tracks (one with commentary) with DVD studio Pro 3. On my first build, the disc meter was 7.6 GB large. On a dual layer this should fit with no problems, right? The build got to muxing and cancelled saying "the video bitrate is too high". I read somewhere on these posts that this doesn't matter too much if you're planning on burning to Toast, which is what I was going to do. So I tried formatting and I keep getting the "can't find a suitable break point error". I then tried making several of the chapter markers break points but it didn't like any of them and I still keep getting the same error message on formatting. Any help is greatly appreciated!

High bitrate
First at all, you probably are using AIFF audio (uncompressed). If that's the case encode your audio to Dolby 2.0 (AC·) and you'll get a lower total bitrate and more free space.
You must look for A.Pack app in your applications folder to encode to AC3. You can take a look to this tutorial about Encoding AC3 with A.Pack (from KenStone site).
You didn't mention your MPEG2 encoding settings, did you used any standard Compressor preset?
37 chapters x 3 min means less than 120 minutes. Encoding your audio to AC3 and using the 120 Min Compressor preset will let you fit your project in a DVD5.

Formatting Failed: Compiler File Error

Yesterday I got my crossgrade disks from Apple, so I upgraded my G4 Powerbook with the full Studio Pro upgrade, then made sure I had all current patches.
When I opened up one of my DVD Studio Pro projects and clicked Burn, It failed with a dailog box that said "Formatting failed, Building was not successful, See log" so I looked at the log and it said in red "Compiler File Error"
This project worked fine before I upgraded... So, for grins, I started from scratch and rebuilt the project and reimported the assets. Now I had just recompressed the video/audio with the new compressor as well... Anyway, same result. Also, when it fails, the OS-X window pops up that you normally get once you insert a blank DVD and you can choose an app or hit ignore.
Can't figure this out... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Once I upgraded, I recompressed the video (its about 14 min, and uses Dolby, not AIFF)... When I opened DVD Studio Pro, it prompted me that assets had changed, I said ok, then tried to burn and go the error. I then tried deleting the PAR folder, no help. So, I just closed the project, hit NEW and recreated the project (it was rather simple) and then tried to burn... Same error.
I burned this same DVD two days ago under the old pre-universal version and it worked fine. I only recompressed because I heard that the new version performed much better.
Sorta lost on this one... I don't see any reason why it shouldnt work. The log only says the one line and gives no other help.

Format Failed error when trying to format a WD MyBook 1TB external

I have tried twice to format the drive with the same "Format Failed" error message. I know it was still formatting with 28 minutes remaining (of the 7 hour format job) the first time - the second time it ran over night. Both times, I formatted with Mac OS Extended (journaled), and selected to zero out the data.
The only difference between the two attempts was a message reporting the Mac lost connection with the drive (after the first attempt) - didn't see any such message this morning after the second attempt.
I set a couple partitions, and ran "Disk Verify".
"DIsk Verify" lists the things it has checked, and gives the following messages:
The volume Startup Backup appears to be OK.
The volume Time Machine appears to be OK.
Other than the "Format Failed" error message, the disk appears to be ok. The "Startup Backup" volume is 319.87 GB as I set, and the "Time Machine" volume is 611.64 GB
I am able to copy a file to both volumes.
So, is the "Format Failed" error message real, and the "Disk Verify" fails to see a problem because it is checking things like the Catalog file, and not each spot on the drive?
Are there any disk utilities that can test the whole drive?

It means your file is too large to fit on a single layer disk.
Recompress to keep the overall size (audio,video and menus) below 4.5GB

Partition of hard drive fails permanently, "Input/output error" on format

Hello!
I have a serious problem on my flat-panel G4 15" 700 MHz (it’s a used machine, bought it on eBay): After the pre-installed system was running nicely for about a month, today I turned it on and got the infamous "broken folder"/prohibitory sign... Alright, I thought, I may have to repair permissions or fix my OS X installation using the system CDs (10.3). But I was wrong, it is impossible to repair the permissions, I couldn't even format the hard drive! Then I get the error "Input/output error", consecutively. I reset everything, PRAM, PMU, formatted the drives in Target Mode, tried to install Mac OS X on an external drive (Can’t be installed on my Firewire-connected drive). No chance.
Is there a possibility this may be due to a hard drive controller error (ATA)? I can’t think of anything else... Any help would be appreciated!

That was my second guess, however, I swapped the hard drives (with an almost identical model) et voilà - same error as before. Now I examined the internals of the machine and found a single wire of the IDE cable seems to be broken, I’ll exchange the cable and let you know if that solves the problem.

DSP Error Message "Bad break point"

I have a project that I'm burning to a Dual Layer disc, the problem is this....during the encoding a message comes up that there was a problem finding a break point for the dual layer disc to write to. It was set on "Automatic" for break point so I tried manual as well and same thing. Has anyone seen this before? Are there any suggestions as to how to solve this? Please help

External Drive Disk Erase Failed with the Error Input/Output Error

I have 2 hard drives in an external FW800 enclosure that I am unable to format. When I go to initialize the drives in Disk Utility, I get the following error message: "Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error."
The drives show up in Disk Utility, but I can't repair them (that option is grayed out). Disk Utility correctly ID's the manufacturer of the drives (Maxtor), their size (200gb each), so it's obviously seeing that the drives are there. But it won't let me format them.
The drives are new, by the way; they don't have any data/files on them. I have Disk Warrior, but the drives don't show up there to be repaired -- probably because they aren't formatted yet.
After looking at other posts, I tried switching the jumper settings around on the drives -- from Master/Slave to cable select and back again, but it didn't help. I also tried doing a zero erase (even though the drives are new), zapping the PRAM -- again, no help.
One question I had is whether this could be a bad FW800 cable? The cable is new -- it came with the enclosure, which is an OWC Dual FW 800 enclosure. Other than that, does anyone have any other thoughts about what's causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the exact same problem. I have the original 20 GB hard drive that came in my Powerbook G4 550MHz and a couple of years ago I traded up for a 60 GB drive and bought a FW/USB enclosure for my original drive to use it to backup my important files. I hadn't backed up in over a year (shame on me!) and I decided maybe I should erase the drive and start from scratch. It was connected via USB.
At that point DiskUtility gave me the exact same Input/Output error. I tried partitioning the drive into 1 or more partitions but came up with the same error. I couldn't figure out what was wrong so I decided to startup in OS 9.2.2, I did that and let it start up, then plugged in the hard drive and it gave me the standard "This disk is unrecognizable, do you want to eject or erase?" so I clicked Initalize. It worked!
Just make sure you choose the MacOS Extended option when initializing out of OS 9 (instead of the MacOS Standard option) so it can be read and viewed in OS X.
If your computer is too new to be able to boot from an OS 9 folder on your drive or an OS 9 CD, then see if a friend or a local library has older computers that are running OS 9 or can boot from it. If not let me know and you can send me your drive and I'll reformat it.
Kind of crazy...I haven't used the OS 9 partition on my HD in YEARS...was even thinking about erasing it since I don't use any Classic applications anymore...good thing I didn't!
