Forte 3G To 3L Problems
Hi,
We recently converted from Forte 3G to Forte 3L and we picked up a problem
with a Referenced Partition.
Scenario - All our applications reference a partition from one application
(AppMgt). We export a project from AppMgt (with IDS) and import it into all
the other applications. Then, when we distribute, we reference the
partition in AppMgt. This worked fine in Forte 3G, but since we upgraded we
get a DESERIALIZATION error every time we call a method on that referenced
partition - I have attached the error below.
Has anybody else had this problem after converting?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Michael Mamarot.

RE: (forte-users) Debugging 'fixes' problem!!!

This is often indicative of a race condition, especially when
multi-threading is involved.
What can happen is that task A is using something created or initialized by
task B,
and task B hasn't gotten around to doing its thing before task A asks for
it.
When running in debug mode, you give everything a lot more time to get
things
done while it's waiting for you to click the next button. So, when task A
starts task B,
you click Run on task B, watch it happen, go back to task A and click,
watch, click, etc.,
and by the time you get to the trouble spot, task B has long since done what
it had to do.

Subject: (forte-users) Debugging 'fixes' problem!!!
Hi folks,
I've got a weird one here.
I'm trying to find out why my code to highlight a particular outline field
row does not work.
However, when I run it in debug, it works perfectly! (The correct row is
highlighted). Anybody got any idea how I can get debug to behave
consistently with "The running man"?
I have tried using "<OutlineField>.UpdateFieldFromData()" as well as
using the same method on the specific DisplayNode involved.
I must point out that the outline field is in a window running as a
separate asynchronous task. Would that make any difference when
running in debug? When the second debug window appears for this
task I just click on the "Go" button and there are no breakpoints.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: (forte-users) Forte on Solarix box problem
Hi All,
Thank you very much, for all the help you
people extended towards this problem. Its solved, the
problem was i had 2 users, and i started from one user
Nodemanager ( which does not have oracle home path
set) and from the other user id, i started the
launcher, ( which have oracle home set), so the
application, was running locally, but when i
distributed the application, it was not finding oracle
home variable from the other user, from which node
manager was started. So that was the problem. I found
this specifically after setting FORTE_STACK_SIZE,
variable(as suggested by Thomas), it was throwing
error saying that, tns name is not resolved,( kudos to
Thomas :) ).
Once again thank you all.

Hi Babu,
ok, maybe we need to go now a bit more in some
details of
your Forte nodemanager environment on the Sparc
Solaris box.
Q1: Which operating system release ? Solaris
2.51,2.6,7 or 8 ?
Q2: Which Forte Release are you running on all nodes
Q3: Where's the Forte environment manager located ?
Q4: Which Oracle RDBMS release have you installed on
the Sun ?
Q5: Which Oracle client release have you probably
installed
on your PC which is running NT4 I guess ?
(These questions are just the generic Tech Support
approach
to get an idea about your environment).
Q6: You mentioned in your very first message that
during
Forte installation on the Sun, you've left the
path to
Oracle empty....it is mandatory for the Forte
nodemanager
on any box/operating system to find in its
environment
the relevant third party environmental
informations...
For Oracle the Forte nodemanager on Sun
requires a
valid setting for ORACLE_HOME !
Could you send me the complete environment for
the user
who is starting the Forte nodemanager on your
Sun ?
Q7: This is more a necessary suggestion than a
question
but is and when yes, how have you setted
FORTE_STACK_SIZE
on the Sun ?
If it's not there or only set as
FORTE_STACK_SIZE=42000,
then add or reconfigure FORTE_STACK_SIZE to
100000 in the
nodemanager's environment and re-boot the
nodemanager!
Q8: Once more a recommendation than question but can
you
just try to access your Oracle DB instance with
the Forte
sample program DynamicSQL ? You will find this
in
the $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/database
directory
and it will require the Utility plan that you
may import
from $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/frame .
Try to access your Oracle instance from local
directly
out of your workspace and later on full
distributed
via an own Forte server partition from the
Partition
Workshop. Send to me all errors thrown during
these
procedures on the client and within the remote
server
partition logfile on the Sun.
BTW: When you can access the Oracle RDBMS running in
the
Forte IDE locally, this is an indicator to me that
you have
setted up the Oracle client on your PC and have
configured
Oracle locally correctly (tnsnames.ora) to connect
to your
remote Oracle instance...hence when test running
locally, Forte
will use this locally configured Oracle SQL*Net V2
client
to connect to your remote Oracle RDBMS instance.
That's one
shortcut making it possible for you as the Forte
developer
to debug DB access within the Forte IDE...when
running completly
distributed debugging of remote partitions is not
possible.
Hope this helps ! Best Regards from Germany !

Have you setup the supported resource managerson

Forte v30M0 Development Workshop - problem with color...
G'day All
Anyone else using Forte v30M0 in development - having problems?
1. Create a new window class and in the display try to select any color for
background. Not working.
2. Create a button and try to change its colour - not working.
3. Create a new DataField widget. Use Style -> Color -> 'some color you
like'. Works.
Is it just me or anyone else experiencing the same problem?
TIA,
DirkIt Seems that Adaptive Web Service model is being used in your case and the destination SAPECC_WSIL is not configured, and hence the error.

Forte 6u2 mutex creation problem when debug
Hi,
I want to debug my software using forte 6u2 graphical environment but it does not work. When debugging in the graphical env, my software is not able to create some mutex and I can't even step in the code. If I use dbx command line, it works perfectly. Anybody knows what the problem is ?
Thanks,
P.S. My software is pretty huge and uses many dynamic lib.Can you supply some more details?
When you say your program can't create a mutex, what does that mean? Do you
mean that you are calling pthread_mutex_init() and the function is returning
an error?
When you say you can't "step" in the code, what does that mean?
1. you stop somewhere
2. you hit the "step" button
3. then what happens?
a) program continues without stopping at the line you wanted it to?
b) program doesn't seem to advance anywhere, as if step command was ignored?
c) program crashes?
d) debugger crashes?
Please explain in more detail.

Forte C 6 installation problems
Hi,
I have just installed Forte C 6 and have some problems I couldn't correct.
1_ The online help is not correctly pointed.
Even when I have the files and can open them from mi navigator, the online help can't find them.
Do I have any way to correct that?
2_ The Memory Monitor help files were not installed, so I can't even open them from the html files directly.
3_ The source browser is crashing each time I try to do a multiple directory browse, even after deleting the db and rebuilding it to get it in sync.
4_ I can't find a way to display in hex the contents of a variable pointed by an unsigned char *, when it starts with a 0x00 character.
It interprets it as a string and displays "" or 0x0, when I know that it has some other values in the following bytes.
I tried formatting the request (with a dbx formatting command) as f.6x , which should do it but it doesn't.
Any help on this points and specially in the last one will be appreciated, as my schedule is pushing me (does it sound familiar, developers? :-)

We want to install Forte C++ on this machine. The default directory at which the software is installed is /opt. It also gives option to change the install

/export/home/forte as install directory.
We selected the following software for installation.
License Software (FLEXIm7.0)
License patches for Forte Developer 6
Forte C++ Enterprise Edition 6
It gives WARNING INSUFFICIENT DISK PARTITION SPACE TO INSTALL THE ITEMS SELECTED.
WARNING: /export/home/forte has insufficient space to install the items selected. 206.7 MB additional space would be needed to install the selected items.

If you add up the space required, it is
5.9 + .479 + 271.1 = 277.5 MB
It's complaining that it needs 206.7 MB additional space?
There is 4 Gig space in that directory...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------It seems to me that unsufficient space in the root dir. Just advice: make root bigger and try to found out how to make /opt with necessary size. You will have problem if you install in non default path and will fix it.

ActiveX problems with 3.0.F.2 (fwd)
This is the message I sent to tech support. Has anyone else seen this
type of thing? Any suggestions (even half-baked) would be appreciated.

Subject: ActiveX problems
Product: Forte
Version of Forte: 3.0.F.2
Server OS: HPUX
Client OS: NT/Win 95
DBMS: Oracle
Reproducible(?): Yes
Brief description of issue:
I have experienced problems using ActiveX controls. I have tried several
controls, including:
o Microsoft Forms 2.0 SpinButton
o Microsoft Forms 2.0 CheckBox
o Microsoft Forms 2.0 EditBox
o AddSoft Gantt/OCX
o Sheridan MonthView
o Sheridan DayView
o Sheridan DateCombo
o Microsoft Calendar Control
(specifically mentioned in a Forte technote)
I have experienced problems with all of these controls. With the Sheridan
DateCombo, the Forte environment crashes when I attempt to drop the
control into a form using the "Insert Control..." button. Before the
environment crashes, I get a series of informational and error dialog
boxes as follows:
o error: unexpected exception -10737415717
o error: The Error Manager stack is empty (repeated 3 times)
o information: the workspace is now read-only because the
repository is disabled.
o error: Exception escaped from terminating task CW.Display
o ERROR: TMgr.Terminate: fatal error terminated partition
With all the other controls I tried, the ActiveX support appears to work
properly until I attempt to bind an instance of the olegen-generated
class to the control itself in the window's Init() method:
--- MyWindowClass.Init() ----
super.Init();
myActiveXControl = new();
After this has been done, the Forte environment may "hang" when I interact
with the control at run-time. For example, each time a generate a mouse
event inside the control, I risk hanging the Forte environment. I might
be able to interact with the control 50 times before the environment
hangs, or it might hang after a single mouse click. Until the crash/hang
occurs, the ActiveX support appears to work properly: I am able to trap
mouse events, and interact with the control using the provided interface.
Any help or advice you can offer would be appreciated. I would be happy
to provide any additional information you may require.
-- Adam McKeeI don’t recall any problems importing to “selected item’ which I always use so I define where it goes and what it’s called.
Do you have Aperture’s Activity Window open so you can see where it is hanging up? Is it just busy generating Previews etc.? I know it sounds more serious than just ‘busy’ but would be interesting to know what it’s doing then.
After these problems, assuming that previews and thumbnails are generated correctly, it may be a good precaution to restart Aperture while holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys so you can Repair Permissions or Repair the database. Even rebuilding the database is fairly quick if those first two options are ineffective. -
How do you import a package into Forte?
I'm attempting to use a Java package from http://www.braju.com that essentially implements the standard C functions printf / sprintf, as part of an exercise to convert a C program to Java.
I can go into a (gasp!) Windows ME DOS window, set my Classpath to include C:\java\classes (where I put the hb15.zip file), and following the directions on Henrik's website I can type:java com.braju.format.Format -helpand see it work- but when I try to compile with Forte, the line...import com.braju.format.*;causes it to say, "package com.braju.format does not exist."
I just installed the early release (version 3) of Forte, which has no problem with standard Java imports such as:import java.lang.Math;Does anybody know what the problem is?Hi.
I am using NetBeans 3.2 but I think it's pretty the same.
So here is how to set your classpath for your compiler :
1) decide what you're using as a compiler : internal or external compiler
2) go to main menu : Project - > Settings
3) Expand "Compiler Types" node
4) Select from here the compiler you're using (internal, external, fastjavac , etc )
5) click on the "Expert" tab and you'll find a "classpath" field that must be editable
6) append/add your location to the existing classpath
Now it should work.
They may be some (GUI) differences between the Forte and NetBeans main menu, but I think you've got the idea.

I'm exporting a xml document that I'm creating dynamically in my application.
I'm having the following problems (working with 30M.2).
1)
It's not possible to edit a DTD (or creating one run time) so I have to write a
template doc XML to have it.
I'm afraid that this is a costraint on the DOM1 so ...
2)
Once I complete the construction of the doc, I need to write it down (let's say
on a file, but could be also in memory to send it on http).
When I write it (using exportdocument function) I just find the root element
with all it's children, no haeder (<?xml version="1.0" ?><!DOCUMENT ...>) so I
cannot have the dtd information on the stream, and cannot enforce validation of
the doc when someone read it afterwards.
I admit I'm new of the subject, but or I miss something or something is wrong:
having trouble to get a dtd and not being able to code it's information.
Anyone has some ideas?
TIA
LucaI'm interested in DTDs. For example in the reported situation, why, if you
know you've created a valid XML document would you want to give a DTD to
someone at the other end? If someone has a DTD at the other end and want to
use it to validate your XML then fine but if you create the XML and are
controlling the format then wouldn't they just assume the XML correct if the
DTD wasn't being controlled by a 3rd party or themselves?
DTDs don't help you create a document but just validate it, I'd thought. If
there is more to DTDs I'd appreciate if someone felt like ellaborating.
Thanks.

Forte/Visibroker/C++ question
I am trying to have a C++ client (MSVC++ 5.0) communicate via Visibroker
(3.2) with a Forte Service Object (3.0.G.2) and have had some success.
I have successfully received a sequence (array) of TextData from Forte,
but am having problems with retrieving strings returned from a method
call which returns a sequence of objects.
Here's the scenario:
The Forte service object is called 'InfoSO' whose service object base
class is 'InfoService'. The class InfoService has a method 'getNodes'
whose return type is 'Array of Node'. Upon invoking this method, an
array consisting of one 'Node' whose attribute 'mName' is set to 'Node1'
is returned. When I try to invoke Node's 'getName()' accessor, I get
the following Visibroker exception:
Exception: CORBA::OBJECT_NOT_EXIST
Minor: 0
Completion Status: NO
I have included the Forte wex and C++ files below. In order to compile
the C++ file, I have commented out the line from the C++ header file
(corba1_c.h) generated after invoking idl2cpp as follows:
//typedef CORBA::Long int;
Has anyone had a similar situation and found a solution?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Searchable thread archive <URL:http://pinehurst.sageit.com/listarchive/>I just knocked up a quick C console "Hello World" program, including
ddeml.h, and got compilation errors.
Using borlands free C++ 5.5 compiler.
I don't think you're supposed to include that include file directly.
I done a search of the standard system include files, and it's already imported in windows.h.
When I include windows.h instead of ddeml.h, it compiles and runs.
I had to force C++ compilation though.
Compile line to compile:
bcc32.exe -P test.c
The -P forces a C++ compile on t C source.
Within my directory, I had a bcc32.cfg file, with my custom compiler switches too... This file contained the following, which can normally be specified on the command line. ( the paths will be different for you )

Oggetto: Re: (forte-users) XML - ExportDocumentproblem
Ok, I'll detail the question.
The application I'm talking about is a Fortè server and a Java client (or other
client platform).
I have to send via HTTP a XML message to and from the two.
I'm developing the Forte side (but think will have the same problems in Java).
Since there could be lots of client sides developed by others teams (or given
out to external suppliers) my concern is to send the message containing the DTD
information to enforce the validation on the various application.
Maybe you are right and I'm overcautious, but the messages are to be built
following the various DTDs (and this is impossible aside starting from a xml
template, since I cannot create a DTD runtime or insert a declaration <!DOCUMENT
...> ... I'll example:)
doc : document = new();
xml : processistruction = doc.createprocessistruction('xml version="1.0"');
root : element = doc.createelement('root');
dtd : ????? = doc.create??????(???);
doc.addchild(xml);
doc.appendchild(dtd);
doc.addchild(root);
All would be nice if I only know how to fill the ???
This is needed because I want to use the parser to make the work for me and
check the doc while I build it.
Also since the DTD should be put on a url it could change and I need to send
this info along with the message to inform the client (since I'm the server
[suffering of multiple personality problem] I think is my duty).
If I recall well DTD are meant to force the parser to create defaults and things
like that.
As I said I'm new of the problem and probabli I may use DTD in a wrong way, but

Oggetto: Re: (forte-users) XML - ExportDocument problemI went through the same process some time back. I
submitted a call to Forte and was informed that there
are hooks but they were intentionally undocumented
because Forte had plans to provide a interface to
Source Control Managers in future releases. If you
submit a call, they will send you a ZIP file
containing instructions on how to use the hooks. The
hooks have proven very useful.

I think that the topic is still open and alive.
In my case I have the need to integrate with PVCS
dimension.
The problem for me is that we develop both with java
and tool, and is
frustrating seeing java people smiling as tha
various tools give the chance to
integrate to various extends with source control
products.
I'm interested too in the problem, looking for a
solution since a bit, but no
satifactory solutions.
So count 2 on the problem.

Oggetto: (forte-users) Source Control
Hello,
I'm looking how to do version control for forte
development, and have
done a search on the list archive. There are lots
of messages asking
how to do source control, but the answers all seem
to be "roll your
own". My questions are:
(1) Most of the postings seem to come from some
years ago. What is the
current state of play with source control for forte
4GL?
(2) There was some mention of "hooks". What are
these hooks?
(3) With Sun appearing on the scene, anyone got any
idea where source
control is going in future versions?
I'm very new to Forte, so sorry if this topic has
been closed.
Cheers,
Dave.

probably have an object that has a link to your SO that is not getting
collected. We have a snippet of code that helps us out alot. We put this
code on a timer in the SO that reports every minute. It will show if memory
is hanging around. If it is we turn on trc:os:5:5 to see what objects are
not being collected.
