Forwarding mail from external OSX 10.3 to internal OS 10.4 postfix server?

I have set up an internal postfix server and an external postfix server.
The internal server is up and running sending messages to all the internal users.
And the internal users are able to send email to the Internet.
And those message are being relayed through the external server.
Also I have opened the smtp port in the gateway between the two machines.
And the MX record points to the external server.
But I'm having a problem receiving mail. It seems that the external server is receiving mail but not relaying it to the internal server.
I still have "mydestination" set to mydomain.com on the external server.
I'm not certain if this is the main reason why the mail hangs or if this value needs to remain in place after I start using the external server as a relay. But then again I also have to tell the external server where to relay all incoming mail.
I was wondering if the following would make sense:
Remove the mydestination parameter
set up a "relay_domains = mydomain.com"
set up a "transport_maps =hash:/etc/postfix/transport"
and then add "mydomain.com relay:[gw.mydomain.com]"
to the transport file?
Is this the correct method or should I take a different approach?
TIA
Hans

This episode has tought me that information found on
the internet is not always correct.
Quite often the problem is not always incorrect information, but also the fact that postfix can be configured in many different ways. Considering however the way OS X is "pre-configured", solutions which are fine for a "plain-vanilla" postfix install will not necessarily work without modification on OS X.
The sad thing is
I had looked at the postfix homepage but overlooked
the information you pointed me to.
Happens to me all the time
I do have a question though...
When naming my two servers, can I use any names that
comply to hostname.mydomain.com or do I need to use
mail.mydomain.com for the external server?
You are free to use any FQDN you wish as long as the MX record reflects it.
mail.domain.tld is often used because it is easy for users to remember when configuring smtp/pop/imap. It is however only a convention/habit like www. is for websites.
Have fun,
Alex

  • Mail forwarding & "Mail from"

    Hello,
For some users, I need to forward emails to their personal address.
I've a contact which is "[email protected]". The principal SMTP address is "[email protected]".
The sender of an email is "[email protected]".
When "[email protected]" send email to "[email protected]", the mail il forwardded to "[email protected]", but during SMTP dialog, you can see "MAIL FROM: [email protected]", which send email from the Exchange Server
of "mycompany.com"... so the mail is refused.
Is it possible, for example with a transport agent, to forward mail "FROM: [email protected]", with "REPLY TO: [email protected]"?
    Thanks!
    Jean-Luc CHANDEZON [MCT]

    Hi Jean-Luc,
once I was required to resolve the same issue, and I did it as on one of the examples from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124347.aspx
An example how to do that for a specific address can be found on https://technet.microsoft.com/de-de/library/bb123966%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx .
    Example:
    new-AddressRewriteEntry –Name "rewriting rule"
-InternalAddress [email protected] –ExternalAddress [email protected] -OutboundOnly $true
The main issue with that, from my view, is that you are using an  external sender address to rewrite. That may result in addiitonal problems with Spam and Blacklisting.

  • Exch 2013 Forwarding Mail from local account to External SMTP user

New 2013 implementation... Two Servers (Front End and Back End) both running Exchange 2013.
I am having trouble sending a local AD Exchange mailbox mail to external SMTP address.  I have tried several options.. I have created an "contact" as was required in previous versions.  I have created new AD accounts with external SMTP addresses,
I have also attempted to use the scriptlet:
    Set-Mailbox -Identity "%AD-USER%" -DeliverToMailboxAndForward $true -ForwardingSMTPAddress
[email protected]  (%AD-USER% was actual AD Username/mailbox) and
[email protected] was actual receipient SMTP address ([email protected])
Local AD Mailbox receives the mail appropriately however I have enabled forwarding everyway I know how and nothing seems to work.  If I send mail straight from my account to the destination SMTP address, they get it; just not if it is sent to the local
AD account then forwarded via -DeliverToMailboxAndForward command...
Please help.. I have several users that I need to have their mail CC'd to an external SMTP address.. Previous versions of Exchange required a "Contact" to be created and then the mailbox forwarded to that contact, which had a SMPT mail address...
Im not adverse to implementing via powershell if I can just get it to work... Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and needed.

I spent several hours on this but I found the perfect solution to forward to external and internal emails.
In my case, I needed to forward to more the one external email (This applies to Exchange 2013):
    Here is how:
    Using the EAC,
    1) Make sure that ENABLE FORWARDING is unselected under the delivery options in mailbox features for your particular user.
    2) Create all the External Contacts you need to forward in the CONTACTS tab in RECIPIENTS.
    3) Create a group in the GROUPS tab, give it a meaningful Display name, and for ALIAS, make sure it is
a name that does not exist in any mailbox. This name will make part of a new email for that group.
You will need this email later to us in the SHELL for the last step.
Further down, under members, click on the plus sign to add all the contacts you wish to forward. You might want to uncheck ADD GROUP OWNER AS MEMBER.
Leave everything else with the defaults and click SAVE.
    4) After you save, go back and edit the same GROUP you just created and click on delivery management.
Click the SENDERS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF MY ORGANIZATION radio so that any external emails are accepted.
    CLICK SAVE.
Using the EXCHANGE SHELL enter the following command that will forward emails to that new group and keep
a copy of the email in the mailbox.
    Substitute "user_to_forward_email" and "groupaliasemailaddress"
    with your information:
    Set-Mailbox  username_to_forward  -ForwardingAddress groupaliasemailaddress
    THIS WORKED PERFECT FOR ME
Note that at this point  you cannot use the EAC to forward to groups.
I don't know why but Microsoft should fix this
unless there is something I don't know.
HOPE THIS HELPS everyone out there looking for this type of scenario.

    Hi Julis
    Thanks for your valuable inputs.
As you said we have already done that settings in SCOT and also the other things specified by you.But we are unable to recive the mails to our CRM System.
Mail are going to external ids from CRM. While replying back exchange server is also receiving it. And as said is also forwarding to the contact id (crm.xyz.com).
But there it waits for time and bounces back because SAP CRM system (and the concerned user for whom that email is assigned) is not accepting the email.
I also sent all the steps what we configured to your personal id with reference to sdn.
    Pls provide your suggestions
    Thanks

But there is a (high) possibility that Gmail's server requires authentication (or certification) to connect to it.
I wonder if they're simply silently dropping emails in certain cases. I forgot earlier that I have a Gmail account. If I send an email from the command line on my home computer, which is on Comcast, the mail log shows that I successfully connect to Gmail, the message is sent and accepted by Gmail, but the email never arrives in my inbox. I've tried several times with the same result.
However, emails from a web server from work get through to Gmail without a problem. So I'd bet it's a case of them not delivering mail from Comcast IP addresses.
For grins, I also tried sending to my Yahoo email account from my home computer and their server at least refuses the connection and I get an error message stating that it's because it's a residential IP address.
In this case you need an SMTP client (=a software which directly sends the mail to the Gmail server) which supports authentication.
I think this might also be possible with Postfix by editing the configuration files. I know I had to set up authentication to send emails to my work address directly from my home computers, but I haven't been able to get the same thing to work with Gmail yet. If I get a chance, I'll look into it again later tonight.

  • How to move iTunes lib from external HD (used to be internal HD)?

I hit an internal HD failure and didn't have iTunes or iPhoto backed up. Not fun, but no one to blame but me.
I've had Apple replace the HD (320GB for Intel iMac), but I'm back at square one. I put the old HD in an external USB enclosure and can see the file system. Glimmer of hope!! For starters, I've copied as much as possible to a NAS box, but I get errors with some files.
    Here's the question(s).
What's the best way to migrate the iTunes content from the external HD to the new internal drive?
Here some details that may help:
    - I can see the "Music" folder on the old HD (4.5G, 2000 items)
    - I can also see "Library/iTunes" (450 MB, 19 items)
    - all music/content was setup for 1 user account
    - content is:
    imported CD's
about a hundred or so songs purchased from iTunes store
misc podcasts (no need to recover)
    playlists, etc.
I would think the best thing would be to:
    1) fireup iTunes somehow to open the music on the external HD
    2) save/export all the music
    3) close iTunes, then re-open iTunes on the internal HD (currently with empty iTunes lib)
    4) import the library from step #2
    5) verify everything is ok
    6) reformat external drive & recycle it
Even if it is possible, the steps above may fail if I hit a drive error. In that case, I'm guessing some sort of file based restoration may be needed.
Any clues on what to do and in what order are appreciated.
No need for extensive details on the instructions (but it is certainly appreciated). Once I know what to do (and in what order), I can search the support site for detailed instructions on the individual tasks.
I'll probably use better protection once I've got this back together. Time machine is a leading candidate.
    Thank for any clues.

  • Forwarding mail from Exchange server to an External email address (SBS 2003)

    Hi
I hope someone can help me the above question. I need to forward email sent to a particular exchange email account to an external gmail one. i have set this up by creating a contact, I have altered the users Exchange general with the new contact. I have
also made sure mail forwarding is enabled. I have been though all the basic steps to make this work. and tried many other things. i simply cannot get it to work. if an email is sent internally then it forwards it out fine. anything incoming will not forward.
I looked at the NDR and it is clearly being blocked from leaving. i just cant see how to allow this. i get the following code. smtp;554 5.7.1 <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: You're not allowed
    to send from that domain.
    Many thanks in anticipation
    Paul

Are you using a smarthost? maybe you can test it to deliver mail trough DNS instead of a Smarthost.

  • Forwarding mail from Appleshare IP to Xserve.

I'm doing some eperiments and I'm using an old Appleshare IP mail server on an external network to forward emails to a a Xserve running 10.4.2.
I can send emails between users on the internal network.
And I can send emails to users on the internet.
But I cannot read emails on the internal server if they arrive from the internet to the external server and are forwarded from there to the Xserve.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what to place in the forward parameter on the AShare IP server and what parameter on the Xserve may be wrongly configured or missing?
    TIA
    Hans

    Hans,
unfortunately I am not up-to-date with pre-10.3.x mail services.
Having said that, I assume you are using an external and an internal server for security reasons. In that case I strongly suggest you have a 10.3.x or 10.4.x server with all it's advanced filtering capabilities on the outside.
Also, if I understand correctly, your outside server is not supposed to store any mail whatsoever, but to forward it to the internal server. This means that setting up the external server is a piece of cake and one more reason to switch it to a newer OS.
However, these are all assumptions. You may have different reasons.

  • Recovering mail from external back-up drive

Hi all I was doing a bit of housekeeping ... why oh why ... anyway I seem to have 2 mail accounts ... only ever ONE email address but there seems to be differing numbers of mails in the two in boxes ... all very confusing so I thought I'd tidy things up and foolishly deleted the wrong one (I think) anyway I'm a little scared now but have the 2 accounts on my powerbook and a back-up of everything on an external drive ... I just want to be sure ... which files do I drag from the external drive to recover or should I sync with the powerbook ... thanks for your time ... Roger

Mail stores preferences and account settings in HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and everything else in the HOME/Library/Mail/ folder. Thus, replacing these with good ones should fix your problem (quit Mail first).

  • Forwarding mail from my .Mac accout to Yahoo

    Hi there,
Is there any reason why I can't forward my .mac mail to my yahoo account..?
I've changed preferences in .mac redirecting it to my yahoo account but nothing happens..?
Confusing but I'm trying to get replies from my website to go through my web host, which then forwards the message to my .mac account (webhost doesn't allow direct forwarding to yahoo due to spam issues) then I've set up my.mac account to forward to yahoo.
The mail arrives ok in my .mac but then stops there and duplicate messages are received..?...an error 550 and .. while talking to mx1.biz.mail.yahoo.com.:message appears...
    Nothing arrives in Yahoo account...?
    Any help much appreciated..

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Mark.
To elaborate on what m.bode said, you can create mailboxes on the server, just like you can create mailboxes locally on your computer, by choosing the associated IMAP or .Mac account instead of “On My Mac” from the Location popup menu in the New Mailbox dialog box. You can then move your messages there. Mail Help has some articles that explain how to do this, e.g.:
    Creating a mailbox
    Organizing your email
Instead of moving all the messages directly in a single operation, however, you may want to try copying them first, to avoid losing them if something goes wrong and the messages cannot be transferred to the server for some reason. You may tell Mail to copy the messages instead of moving them by holding the Option (Alt) key down when you drag them or by doing Message > Copy To instead of Message > Move To.
That said, once an IMAP or .Mac account has at least one custom server-stored mailbox, a globe icon appears in the mailbox list to group the custom mailboxes associated with that account and differentiate them from the “On My Mac” mailboxes. This allows you to easily copy all the local mailboxes and their contents to the server by just dragging them to the globe icon, without having to manually create the mailboxes on the server nor transfer the messages there one mailbox at a time.

I want to push my yahoo mail to my gmail inbox automatically.

You can set your g-mail up to pull from your yahoo. I'm not sure if you can set an auto forward via yahoo, but any of this is things you'll need to do via computer or safari, it won't work via the mail app.
