Found the Monster that ate my Hard Drive and kept my machine awake . . . .

. . . and got a two day education of TimeMachine that I until about an hour ago, I thought was the most worthless piece of software in the world. But then Apple has never been known for comprehensive operational instructions. I stumbled on a great very short thread that explained in several very easy steps how to completely restore from a TM Backup. And it worked like a charm. Needless to say, if I had stuck with CarbonCopy, I would have been done a couple of days ago, but now I know more of and love TM.
Anyway. . . .
After moving into an install of 10.5.2, because 10.4.11 would lock up if left idle for more than a minute or so. Apple you got your wish . . . I migrated. Once in 10.5.2 I slowly and methodically moved one application at a time as I needed them, doing all the now being assailed permissions and whatnot rituals, and giving them plenty of time to mutate. No problems. I was able to move many apps in, I link all my databases to a secure protected and severely anally backed up partition, and all was great. Then I started having Sleep problems. Time to hit the Apple Discussion Groups where I found several threads with the proverbial and over stated permission ritual that did nothing to help anyone there. Then I found one were someone asked about HP Printer software. I thought that the HP Printer software and OSX problems had been fixed, since Apple is offering HP updates in Software Update, HP has been right there with updates, and there is a Rep roaming these discussions offering help and update info. Too bad Lexmark doesn't care enough to even get their updates out within a year or two of OS updates. Anyway . . . . I have the latest, just released version of the AiO for the PS3310 and just the other day installed the HP Driver Update 1.0 that was offered by Apple Update. I uninstalled the AiO software and got sleep back, noticed that the 9+GB of space that was "missing" on the boot partition was back and that things ran smoother. Three birds with one stone. WooooHoooooo! BUT . . . .
I didn't leave it there cuz I kinda need the software to use the printer/scanner. So I installed and uninstalled five of the latest versions and got the same results each time. HP loaded, no sleep. Not loaded, sleep. Then my next thought was maybe it wasn't AiO software, but the recent HP 1.0 update. I haven't done my ritualistic CCC backups since using TimeMachine. So I looked and had a backup two days before I installed the HP 1.0 update and thought I would restore to that to see if the stand alone AiO would work. This is where my "trial by Apple" education of TM and the extra several days that it should have not taken come into play. Finally got to the install i wanted, installed AiO without the HP 1.0 Update and got the same results. +*So the Sleep Problem is the HP All-in-One Printer software, and not the AiO with the 1.0 Update.*+
So I have sleep back, but can not use our HP3310. AND now know most of the ins and outs of TimeMachine of which I now thin is pretty cool and will go in search of a User made Users Manual to see if there aren't anymore really cool features. Plus I have a couple questions of how it restores just to know of its process.
I hope this answers questions for those that I have seen scattered around the discussions.

well, I also have the same insomnia problem on my Mac Pro and I can now admit I had the same reservations as you so I made a little sleep program of my own.
Feel free to test it. It uses a very simple apple script and a launch daemon to run it. The script can be converted to a shell script if somebody wants to.
1. Copy and paste the following in Script Editor and save it as an application:
--read off the system sleep settings
set x to (do shell script "defaults read /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement \"Custom Profile\" | grep \"System Sleep Timer\" | awk '{print $5}' | sed -e 's/;//g'") as number
--convert to seconds

--read off system idle time
set idle_time to (do shell script "ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'") as number
if idle_time > sleep_timer then
tell application "System Events" to sleep

save it as an application somewhere everyone can read it (root level of your start up drive is a good place).
2. Install [lingon|http://lingon.sourceforge.net>.
3. start Lingon and create a new *Users agent*.
Set it to execute the app you saved in 1. every 60 seconds (that period can be adjusted).
4. restart.
That's it. The sleep settings are still set and changed in system preferences, so once installed you can forget about it.
One warning. As implemented, it will work so long as anybody is logged in. It won't work at the login window.

Some of the VOB files contain numerous film clips but my software does not appear to be able to recognize them as such. I need to know if replacing my old Premier Elements with the new Version 13 would solve this problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    What do you have now.....
    What computer operating system do you have?
    We can go into the finer points of source and your intentions, but for now it would appear that you are using SD 4:3 source media to get to a HD 16:9 result. Lots to discuss in this regard.
    What was given to you on the DVD disc? DVD-VIDEO 4:3 or something else?
    If DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, you should expect to find on the disc a folder named VIDEO_TS. That is your target for your video files.
    If you were given a DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, then all you want from it are the video files, specifically
    VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on through that series until possibly getting to
    VTS_02_1.VOB, and so on. How many files you have beyond the VTS_01_1.VOB file will depend on the size of the DVD-VIDEO.
    Does the above scenario apply to you?
    The alternative might be someone giving a DVD disc (data disc) which contains just the VTS files mentioned which were copied from
    the VIDEO_TS Folder. So, you do not get the whole VIDEO_TS Folder, just the essential video files. Does this scenario apply to you.
    I see no need to replace your Premiere Elements 4 with a later version unless you have a huge project and need a later version that will be a 64 bit application running specifically on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer.
    Consider...Premiere Elements 4 and if you have DVD-VIDEO on DVD....
    1. Place the DVD disc in the burner tray
    2. Open Premiere Elements 4 and set the project preset for NTSC DV Standard (assuming you are working in a NTSC setup)
    3. Go to
    Get Media
    "DVD, Digital Camera, Mobile Phone, Hard Drive Camcorder, Card Reader"
    "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" and its Advanced dialog.
    Set the Source in the latter dialog for the drive which has your DVD disc inserted in its tray
    You should see your VTS_01_1.VOB thumbnail in the "Adobe Premiere Elements - Media Downloader" Advanced dialog.
    With this VOB selected, click on Get Media to get the file from there into the project.
    Should work fine.
    Complications may be involved if the people who processed your footage gave you something other what is described above.
    Please review and consider, and then we can plan our project strategy accordingly.

    Never let a drive get more than 80% to 85% full.
    AND keep 50-100 GB of free space on a startup drive to allow proper function of virtual memory in all OS X versions from 10.5x to current versions.
    10.4x can get by with 20 GB of free space on the boot drive, but more is always better.
    I try and keep all boot drives between 50 and 60% of capacity.
    Beyond 60% and up to 90% capacity, seek times increase almost exponentially; performance suffers.

  • Upgrading hard drive and OS - time machine suitable?

    I've been keeping regular copies of my system using time machine, but am not sure of it's overall capabilities. I am about to replace my internal hard drive (2008 macbook) and upgrade to Snow Leopard. Once this is done can I simply restore my old settings, applications, and files using time machine? Would this also include things such as my .profile file?
    Also if anyone has any advice on a good replacement hard drive then that would be super. I have the late 2008 aluminium macbook, and need something bigger than the current 230GB. I'm off to do some research now, but it can't hurt to ask here too.

    Yes, the Momentus is a good drive.....You shouldn't have any issues with that one...
    I myself purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400RPM hard drive and used it for a few months until I got a nice deal on a 128GB Kingston V200 SSD.....
    Now I'm enjoying a quick Macbook Uni with 8GB of RAM and SSD upgrade.  Planning on giving it to my niece since I have a couple of late 2011 Macbook Pros.

  • Installing a new hard drive and using Time Machine to Restore system

    I just upgraded a Macbook (2006) hard drive and had problems importing the Time Machine backup. The problem was that the initial install discs were for Tiger, which did not support Time Machine. After numerous attempts at a work-around I solved this problem the following way:
    I connected the 2006 Macbook (with new hard drive) to a newer Macbook (with Firewire port) - one with install discs for Leopard (which supports Time Machine).
    I launched the newer Macbook with the install disc (#1)
    I connected the two Macbook via firewire cable.
    I launched the 2006 (new hard drive) Macbook in the Target Disc mode.
    I connected the USB external hard drive containing the Tme Machine data to a USB port in the newer Macbook.
    Next I went to the Utilities Menu on the Macbook (operating from the Install Disc) and selected Time Machine. I followed the prompts to match the source and destination. The process worked fine.
    The above assumes that a new hard drive is properly formatted using Disc Utility per Apple's guidance prior to the Time Machine restoration described above.

    No, the glass is half full!! In this case, we (collectively) have three things to brighten our day:
    1) That I was mistaken, and that your usage is completely legitimate. I definitely prefer this to what was inherent in my erroneous assumption, and I do not mind being wrong (not in the slightest).
    2) That we can be clever enough to overcome obstacles, then go out of our way to share our newfound knowledge with others. More specifically, that you have done so.
    3) That we are willing to police ourselves, if and when one of us might go astray. Even if I was wrong in this case, isn't it nice to know I am willing scold someone for being less than honorable?
    Perhaps my greatest mistake was the assumption that, if you had the proper disks at one time, you would still have them, or would have said so in your initial post. My apologies. Technically speaking, the media for a given OS should always be somewhere in your possession when running that OS. In practice, however, I strongly believe that some "wiggle room" exists, guided by common sense. In this case, I believe that the fact that you purchased said media gives you a pass, regardless of whether or not you know off the top of your head where it is.

    Was getting a question mark upon booting up, so I booted from a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard CD and ran disk utility. Repair disk was interrupted with an error message. 'Disk utility can't repair disk. Backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files.'
    1. Should I select Erase, Mac OS Extended Journaled, Erase?
    2. If I do this, won't I lose my networkability, and therefore lose access to Time Machine backups?
    3. If it were you, would you go ahead and replace the hard drive? Not sure I should trust this hard drive!
    4. If I need to replace the hard drive, can you send instructions?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    If you have your Time Machine backup drive connected, then you can use Setup Assistant to migrate your Home folder, application support files, and third-party applications and system preference files. I recommend doing this via the Setup Assistant when the option appears.

    Is there a reason you don't want to keep your entire iTunes folder on the external.
    Everything will work just fine and it is simpler if everything in iTunes is in one location (the iTunes folder).
    Copy entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    That is all you need to do.

  • Is there a compatibility issue with the Current USB 3 external Hard drives and MacBook Pro 2011 (USB 2)?

    I am currently having bad hangs with my 13" MacBook Pro (2011) which I book 2012 ad a New external Harddrive (WD My Passport Edge) which was given to me as a gift.
    Friends of mine told me there is a compatibility issue between the USB 3 cord and the USB outlet of my MacBook Pro.
    Although this shouldnt be the case as the box of the Hard drive I got said it was compatible.
    I even downloaded the WD Drive Utilities and sometimes whenthe Harddrive is plugged in the Utilities doean't Open but just bleeps in the Applications Dock.
    Before I used the Harddrive I read a lot from the WD Manual and went to their site and downloaded a firmware update so I really don't know what the problem is.
    What I am afraid of is that I may lose some files if I place them in the external Harddrive.
    Can anyone help me with this or should I be asking for a replacement harddrive?
    This is my first experience with an external hard drive as I never used one before.

    To be honest, I've had back luck with Western Digital drives and I avoid them at all costs. If I were you, I would return the WD drive and look at externals from OWC or MacMall (LaCie, even G-Tech).

    Can you remember what the permissions problem was that you had before? You may need to reinstall OS X from scratch and not reinstall anything from your Time Machine backups. To be on the safe side you should reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, as well. Then only restore from your backup your document/data files.

    In most of the cases, that Disk Utility message means that the hard drive is damaged.
    However, you can try to erase the disk and restore the Time Machine backup to see if it works. Follow these steps:
    1. Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and press the C key while your Mac is starting.
    2. Go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. If there's an error during this step, take the Mac to an Apple Store to get a new hard drive.
    3. Close Disk Utility, go to Utilities menu, choose the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow the steps.
    If the computer is slow after doing this, take the Mac to an Apple Store as soon as you can

    I replaced my 160G Hard Drive with a 750G. I have a 3 TB external hard drive for Time Machine. I back up using firewire 800.
    I am running the latest OS. When I start the first backup using Time Machine it goes fine for about the first 30G. Then slows way down. Now I am only seeing updates of 10M ever few minutes. What is wrong?

    Nothing is wrong.  I had the same issue after swapping HD but using the same TM backup. Give it a few hours to do the first backup.  Subsequent backups will be alot faster.... trust me.

  • External Hard Drive and Back Ups..

    I've been searching the net and getting myself more confused with each website I find. Since I've had great luck with the folks on these forums I figured that I'd try my luck again...here goes...
    I thought backing up my MacBook Pro would be easy...get and external drive one half the size of my current hard drive and let Time Machine do the rest. But then I got all twisted trying to decide between external drives, online back up services, etc.
    1. Some folks recommend taking video, photo, iTunes files, etc. and keeping them EXCLUSIVELY on an external drive just to keep the computer from running slowly. Problem is...if I do that...there's only ONE copy of those files. Drive fails...bye bye.
    2. And what about the system itself? If my comp goes down and I have to reboot the whole system or a new computer...does the external have my system files on it? Some folks recommend having a clone drive all by itself?
    3. HOW MANY DRIVES AM I SUPPOSED TO HAVE?!?
    Basically I'm a paramedic and emergency services educator and I'm always on the move. I also work overseas a lot and am always downloading medical videos, podcasts, photos, e-books, etc. for educational purposes. I don't want my computer to get slow but I have to make sure every thing is copied...one original...and one copy.
    Sorry if I sound like I'm technologically illiterate but I could really use a hand here. The more I look...the more confused I get.

    There are many philosophies on backing up, and you will get many opinions.
    For safety, it is good to have at least 2 separate drives for backup, so that you have your information on more than one drive. One of these drives could be a portable drive that goes with you everywhere. The other could be a large desktop drive that stays home when you travel, or it could be a second portable drive. I travel a lot myself, and what I have is two portable firewire drives. One goes everywhere with me, and the other stays at home in a fire proof safe. This is so that if the worst happens and my Mac and external drive are stolen or destroyed, most of my data will be safe at home. So if it it feasible, it would be good to have one complete copy of your stuff in a separate location so it would always be safe.
    What might be simplest would be for you to have a large enough internal drive to accommodate all your stuff if possible. You will need to keep 15% to 20% of your internal drive free for optimum performance of the OS. As long as you do that, you should not experience the slowness that comes when a drive is too full.
    If you want to create a bootable clone for a backup, you will need an external drive--or a partition of an external drive--that is the same size as your internal drive. If you want to have a Time Machine backup, you will need an external drive--or a partition-- that is much larger than your internal drive. I'm not sure that a Time Machine backup would be the best thing for you to have. For one thing, it it's not bootable.
    If all your stuff will not fit on your internal drive, then you will need a drive--or a partition of a drive--that is dedicated to that data.

    You can download either one and run it as much as you like for free. If you want to unlock Super Duper's more useful features such as Smart Update, you can register a copy for $28. CCC is donation ware.
    I use Super Duper myself, so I can say that it is very easy to use. I am not as familiar with CCC, but I have heard good things about it.
    What I would recommend is 2 external FireWire drives, each larger than your internal drive. A good source would be OWC, where you can select a bare drive and put it in OWC's excellent Mercury on the Go FireWire 800 enclosure. USB would work, but FireWire 800 would be much faster.
    You can partition these drives. One partition on each would be the same size as your internal drive, and this partition would be used to create a bootable clone of your internal drive. That means that if your internal drive were to die, you would be able to boot from the external and keep on working. You would of course keep both of these external clones as up to date as possible.
    The second partition would be for any data that would not fit on your internal drive--say if you find your internal drive is getting too full, and you need to move some videos off onto the external to create more space on the internal. If you did that, you could clone the second partition of that drive to the second partition of your other external drive, so that you would have 2 copies, one on each external drive.
    It's hard to give complete advice not knowing the size of your internal drive or about how many GB's of videos and stuff that you need. If there is going to be a huge amount of videos, you may need separate drives for them rather than partitions.
    Hope this will help. If you could post back with the size of your internal drive and the approximate size of your videos etc, it would be easier to make specific recommendations.

  • I made a Blurb book through Lightroom 5, on another computer, backed it up on an external hard drive and tried to import it into my imac.  I got the picture files, but could not get the book I had worked on.  How do I find my book?

    I made a 'Blurb' book using Lightroom on a computer that was not mine.  I backed up the book on an external hard drive and then tried to import the book into my imac.  I wasn't able to retrieve my book.  The photos I used for the book project are there, but the 45 page book I made is not there.
    What do I need to do?

    You would need to go to the computer containing the book.
    Select the saved book in the Collection panel.
    Go to Grid View [ G ] and select all the images [Cmd/Ctrl][A]
    File>Export as Catalog and store on media you can use to transfer
    Bring this catalog onto your computer
    File>Import from another catalog and bring the transitory catalog into your master catalog.
    It should bring the images, your collections (including your book) and other settings into your own catalog.
