Is there a quick workaround like downloading a correct jar file from other place?
thanks for your help.

You need to make sure that the library in question (RTLItem.jar) is properly signed.

I just got done spending some "quality time" (about 2 days worth) with jarsigner and Java Web Start to figure out a certificate problem, and I thought I'd share my findings to save others a bunch of time.
I have a JWS application that has two custom built jars and several third party jars. I'm looking to run it in "unrestricted" mode which means that all of the jars need to be signed. The building and signing went fine but I ran into the problems often mentioned in this forum of exceptions being thrown from the bowels of JWS while it was trying to launch my application.
I ran into a few different problems at different times. One was getting this exception during launch:
JNLPException[category: Download Error : Exception: null : LaunchDesc: null ]
at com.sun.javaws.security.SigningInfo.checkSigning(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.javaws.cache.DownloadProtocol$RetrieveAction.actionDownload(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.Launcher.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:536)
Another was an exception that included the message "Missing signed entry in resource".
The source of all of these problems was an incorrectly created/signed jar file. My problems occured with jakarta-ojb-0.9.7.jar (Jakarta's OJB package), but I believe that it can happen with any jar file.
First let me review what I found out about how the jar building and signing is done. When you sign a jar file with jarsigner, it creates signature files which it puts in the META-INF directory of the jar file. For example if you sign a jar file with the alias "foo", it will add files FOO.SF and FOO.DSA to the META-INF directory (your extensions may be slightly different depending on what kind of keys you have).
jarsigner also creates a new manifest file META-INF/MANIFEST.MF. For my jar file, before I signed it the MANIFEST.MF contained only this:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Created-By: Apache Ant 1.5
Name: ojb
Class-Path:
After I signed it, the file had 675 entries in it like this:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Created-By: Apache Ant 1.5
Name: org/apache/ojb/broker/metadata/RepositoryTags.class
SHA1-Digest: bX/beup+4fwyuMQIF9sz55wz3Zk=
Name: org/apache/ojb/odmg/states/ModificationState.class
SHA1-Digest: xl0iS4ojhVh8pHwzabKK9T2ouLg=
Name: org/apache/ojb/jdo/JDOTransaction.class
SHA1-Digest: Z/EV2WgDPVbHkY3D78mOIjLyLI0=
Name: org/apache/ojb/broker/util/pooling/WrappedConnection.class
SHA1-Digest: B3r6HwsWePdNkMYh8jIeBmfjrUc=
Here is where the problems begin. Here is one known bug that I did not have but you should be aware of, which has to do with paths that have 133 or 134 characters:
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4357504.html
Another problem is as follows. When JWS reads the manifest file from each jar file, it iterates through all of the manifest entries and for each one, verifies that there is an entry in the jar file for it. Here is the code decompiled from javaws version 1.2 to give you an idea:
Manifest manifest = jarfile.getManifest();
Set set = manifest.getEntries().entrySet();
for(Iterator iterator = set.iterator(); iterator.hasNext();)
java.util.Map.Entry entry = (java.util.Map.Entry)iterator.next();
String s1 = (String)entry.getKey();
if(jarfile.getEntry(s1) == null)
throw new JARSigningException(url, s, 4);
The problem is that the manifest can sometimes contain entries that are intended as headers like this:
Name: ojb
Class-Path:
This fragment was created by the application that created the original jar file (ant), and was included in the new manifest file created by jarsigner. Inexplicably, this fragment was about one third the way down the 2228 line file, rather than at the top where you would expect it.
When JWS iterates through the manifest entries, it finds this one named "ojb", and then it tries to find an entry in the jar file with this key, and fails, which throws the JARSigningException, which causes the application launch to fail. Unfortunately JWS doesn't give you any of this detail in the error message, I had to discover this through a lot of sleuthing (and so will yoU!).
JWS just uses the java.util.jar classes to read the jar and manifest files, so it is simple to write a small utility that reads jar and manifest files and reports on them to help you identify problems like this. Note that using the -verify flag to jarsigner doesn't find many problems. Below is a utility I wrote called GrokJar:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.*;
import java.util.jar.*;
public class GrokJar {
public static void main(String s[]) {
String action = s[0];
if(!action.equals("-j") && !action.equals("-m")) {
System.err.println("Usage: GrokJar [-j | -m] file");
System.err.println("\t-j grok a jar file");
System.err.println("\t-m grok a manifest file");
System.exit(0);
String pathname = s[1];
if(action.equals("-j")) {
try {
File jarFile = new File(pathname);
JarFile jar = new JarFile(jarFile);
Manifest manifest = jar.getManifest();
Set set = manifest.getEntries().entrySet();
System.out.println("Manifest has " + set.size() + " items");
for(Iterator iterator = set.iterator(); iterator.hasNext();) {
java.util.Map.Entry entry = (java.util.Map.Entry)iterator.next();
String key = (String)entry.getKey();
if(jar.getEntry(key) == null) {
System.out.println("Can't get entry from jar for key \""+key+"\"");
} catch(Throwable t) {
t.printStackTrace();
else if(action.equals("-m")) {
try {
Manifest manifest = new Manifest(new FileInputStream(pathname));
Set set = manifest.getEntries().entrySet();
System.out.println("Manifest has " + set.size() + " items");
} catch(Throwable t) {
t.printStackTrace();
This utility reported the following for my jar:
Manifest has 675 items
Can't get entry from jar for key "ojb"
The solution to my problem was as follows:
1) First, make a copy of the unmolested jar file before you mess around with it (by default jarsigner modifies a jar file in place)
2) Sign the jar file with jarsigner
3) Run the GrokJar utility to discover any errant keys
4) If there are errant keys, un-jar the jar file into a temporary directory
5) Edit the file META-INF/MANIFEST.MF to remove the errant keys
6) Create a new jar file. Note that simply "jar cf" won't work. By default, the jar utility creates a new manifest file, which will overwrite the one you just edited. you need to either include the "m" parameter and specify your manifest file, or the "M" file so it won't create its own manifest file and it will use the one you edited.
7) Sign the jar file again with jarsigner. The reason is that jarsigner creates a signature for every entry in the manifest. If you sign it and then edit the manifest, the signature and manifest won't match. So you need to sign it again.
8) Run GrokJar against it again, and you should see a different number of manifest entrieS (not zero), and no errant keys.
That is what did it for me. Your mileage may vary. Here are some other links to good information that I found:

• "Missing signed entry in resource" for only some users

Hi,
I have recently updated my .jnlp file and .jar file and added some extra jar resources in the new jnlp.
Since this new version, some users receive an error saying
"Missing signed entry in resource:" for one particular resource.
While for other users it works fine.
I have signed the jar with jarsigner.
Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem here?
Thanks very much in advance,
Best regards,
Stein Aerts,
University of Leuven, Belgium

I remember hearing something like this, and had to do with :
1.) what version of jarsigner was used to sign the jar, and
2.) what version of JRE was used to validate the signed jar file on the client.
(including US only vs. International version of JRE)
For the jar that gets this error:
Does it have any empty directories in it., or does it have entries with non-english characters in the resource names ?
What version of the JDK was used to run jarsigner to sign this jar, and what jre is the application running on ?

• Using resources from an external JAR inside a JAR

Hi,
I'm trying to package all parts of my application into a JAR file so I can deploy my application using Java Web Start. However, I have an issue.
I need to use the files from an external JAR, Ice.jar, with my application. Therefore, I included Ice.jar in my build, specifically in the lib/Ice.jar directory.
This does not seem to be working; my application cannot read the information from the Ice.jar file when I launch my JAR file. It does work in one instance, however:
I have a directory included in the same directory where my JAR file is. This directory is named lib, and contains Ice.jar. My directory structure is as follows:
dist
dist/NVAC.jar //my JAR
dist/lib/Ice.jar //the external JARMy JAR file, NVAC.jar, will ONLY work if that lib directory is included in its directory. This is NOT what I want to do; I want to include the external JAR inside my JAR file, so a user will only have to download the JAR file. I have included the external JAR inside my JAR as I mentioned previously; at the path myJAR/lib/Ice.jar.
Therefore, how do I use a resource from an external JAR inside my JAR? Do I have to use ClassLoader? ClassLoader.loadClass() perhaps?
If I can provide any more information, please let me know.
Thanks

Seems to me it isn't practical to want to do things
that don't work. Especially since you're using
WebStart and it takes care of dependent jars
automatically for you if you configure things
correctly, so this absurd idea of jars inside jars
isn't even helpful.Dang DrClap, you seem to be the go-to guy for destroying all my ridiculous ideas (no offense; I mean that in a good way).
Seems I did not understand JWS fully when I thought of that idea. I researched it more after reading the replies here, and I see that I was indeed thinking absurdly.
Thank you for the help,
Dan

• When I start my computer the following error: AppleSyncNotifier.exe Entry Point Not Found Procedure entry point xmlTextReaderName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll

After updating to iTunes version 10.5, every time I start the computer the following error message appears: AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found. Procedure entry point xmlTextReaderName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll? Please help

Thank you Allan123.
I have used iTunes 10.5.1 for a while without any problem but the other day I installed an application that wanted to restart my computer and iTunes did probably not shut down properly which probably caused the problems. I had to search for libxml2.dll though. Two other programs on my PC used a with the same name but I copied the one from the an Apple folder of course and pasted it where u suggested and after that everything was fine. I have no idea why this problem really occured without any real reason. But thanks for the solution!

• ? fixing apple sync notifier.entry point not found. Entry point split3_wal_checkpoint could not be located in the dynamic link library SQLite3.dll.

Upon computer start up I receive message: procedure entry point split3_wal_checkpoint could not be located in the cynamic link library SQLite3.dll.
Apple Sync Notifier.exe Entry Point not found.
Anyone have solution?

IIRC, This problem happens when you have a piece of software installed that either doesn't properly register the DLL it uses, or is improperly installed. The draw back is that if that software is runnig when you install the Apple software, the DLL is loaded, and the Apple software doesn't install the DLL because it already finds it, so it doesn't need to load it. Now you reboot, and the other software isn't running, and Apple can't find it's DLL, so you get the error.
You have a couple of options. You can find the DLL in your "Program Files"\"Common..." folder tree and copy it to the Apple folder where it is giving you the error, or you could properly register the DLL with your OS so that it knows where to find it when it is needed. Another option which should work is to remove the Apple software which is giving you the error, perform a fresh reboot (possibly into safe mode) and re-install the application before you launch anything else.

• Plugin entry point resource in CS5

Hi,
I tried installing our plugin (built against the CS4 SDK) in Illustrator CS5 for Mac, and it basically worked.
However I noticed that randomly during Illustrator CS5 launch it crashes in AWS_CUI_RevertAlert() or AWS_CUI_GetVersionComments(). I reduced my PluginMain function to do nothing but return at once, and it still crashed!
By comparing with the SDK samples I noticed that those don't specify an entry function in their resources. Instead the entry point is always "" (empty string). First of all I didn't think this was legal to do, but it works, and AI uses my PluginMain as default. But more importantly doing just that with my own plugin made the random crashes go away.
Is this a bug in CS5? If so will it be fixed soon?
This "empty string entry point" trick appears to work in CS3 and CS4 also, but is this documented anywhere and safe to do?

I was noticing the same thing with our plug-in. Although, I am seeing the crash consistently in AWS_CUI_RevertAlert upon startup (on machines running 10.6 and 10.5). I would also be interested in knowing if this is a bug in CS5 that will be fixed in the near future, or whether we need to distribute a new copy of our plug-in. Using the empty string did seem to resolve the problem for us as well.
Thanks!

• Jasper exception? Class not found? But the resources are there!

Hi, thanks for reading. I am building a simple web application. Just servlets and jsp working together to either retrieve or add or edit or delete data in a mysql database.
The problem i have is, some servlets compile and run fine and properly, while others return me the 'jasper error' (see below) and class not found error. The code in these servlets (those that work, and those that don't) are almost identical. I've checked them a couple of times, does not seems like there is any problem with the programming at all.
Please advise. Thanks for reading. If there is any files that you think i should upload, please let me know. Though it says class not found, the resources are there! What could be wrong? From the advice of someone on another thread, i've looked into the web.xml. And it looks like its right.
If anyone is willing to look into the matter for me. I'll upload all the files. (But that feels really rude to just impose on someone like that). Irregardless, thanks, really.
And what about the Jasper Exception? I've googled that already. But nothing that i found has been useful (even the official ones from apache).

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry for cross-posting. The other thread is here: http://forum.java.sun.com/post!reply.jspa?messageID=9920352#
sunish_jose suggested that:
The servlet classes u mentioned in web.xml should be in WEB-INF/classes. U can add in many ways, you can manually copy and paste(But u have to follow the package structure) or You can mention the class folderd in your editor to
WEB-INF/classes so that the editor will automaticall generate the class file into that folder with the folder structure. By looking at the error.txt what I can understand is Exceptions are thrown due to the above issue and more than that there are some compilation errors in support_getContact.jsp.
And i'm looking into that right now.

• Getting error "Firefox.exe - entry point not found"- "procedure entry point ?alloc@nsmemory@@sapaxi@z could not be located in the dynamic linc library xpcom.dll" alot.

Some sites worse than others. Seems to be triggered to adds loading as sites load. Must close error multiple times as pages load to continue to load the page. This is becoming real annoying.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

• Personnel master record & not found (check entry) Message RU040

Dear Friends,
Error message RU040 is observed when confirmation is posted in CO11N for Personnel No.
However, with same data confirmation is successfully posted in quality server but in Production server it is giving error.
So I am confused why system is giving this error only in Production server & not in quality server even though Personnel Master record doesnt exist in both the servers.
Kindly share your views for the same.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Tejas

Hi Hiren,
Thanks for your reply. But actually my issue is different. Actually When personnel no. field value is maintained in Produciton server while confirmation in CO11N by user it is throwing above error since no personnel master record maintained same is the case in quality server but to my surprise system is allowing to save confirmation without throwing above error in quality.
I checked CO86 part but it is not relavant to this issue.
Regards,
Tejas

• Resources files in Multi-JAR distribution

Hello.
I'm kind of new to Java and I'm having some serious issues trying to make resource files get packaged into my JAR properly. Actually, this is what I have:
CompositorX - this is my main project; it just contains a small main class with "static void main" method that creates a new form from another class, which belongs to CompositorXLib.
CompositorXLib - this is a class library that contains all the classes I wrote specifically for the CompositorX application.
General - this is a class library that contains lots of general-purpose classes which are used by multiple applications.
(BTW, is this a good way to organize my classes?)
Now, I have a bean in General called PictureFrame. PictureFrame's default constructor has to get an image file to display as the default image for the bean. What I'd like to do is get the default image ("defimg.bmp") packed into General's JAR, so that it is always available to PictureFrame, no matter which application creates the PictureFrame. But it doesn't seem to work that way. In my PictureFrame constructor, I have: PictureFrame.class.getClassLoader().getResource("."). I expect it to return a URL that will get put into my General JAR: therefore, I put the resource inside my General/build/classes/. However, when I run my CompositorX app, and it creates a new PictureFrame object, the URL returned by getClassLoader().getResource() is pointing to CompositorX/build/classes/.
I'm using NetBeans 5.5.1. I could probably figure out how to fix this without NetBeans... but as I'm doing all my dev in NetBeans and I don't want to fight against whatever it's already doing, I was hoping that someone could tell me how to solve this problem in NetBeans.
Thanks a lot. If I wasn't clear enough, just let me know and I'll try to post a better description.

1) I don't know if
these will work with a JAR exe, as I've been doing
some searching and found that people have had
problems playing wav files embedded in a JAR.It will work fine if you do it correctly.
2) The Java Sun guide doesn't provide me with enough
code examples to actually know what I need to do.What don't you know how to do? If you need more help, search for tutorials on google and consult the API.

• Problem accessing resources in a built jar but works fine within eclipse

Howdy,
I have an image which I am trying to set as my jframe icon, quick overview:
package: testpackage
source directory: src (in root dir of package)
image directory: icon (in root dir of package)
So if i do this to aquire the image, within the IDE it works fine!
Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("icon/test.png");
However, if I export the jar file and try to run it, the image is not being found. I used jar xf to open the jar file and the relitive path is still the same "icon/test.png"...ive tried everything I can think of including just trying to move/include the image file in my source directory but no luck
FWIW when i right click on the image within eclipse and select "copy fully qualified name" i get a path like this:
/project/src/package/icon/test.png
Any ideas?
thanks

Try
Image image = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getImage(this.getClass().getResource("/icon/test.png"));
