FR: Direct selection/manipulation of clip(s) in Program Monitor

*******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature: Direct selection of clip(s) in Program Monitor for modification
How would you like the feature to work?
We should be able to directly select a clip/asset in the Program Monitor to move/resize/rotate it.  Even better would be the ability to SHIFT-click-select 2 or more items to move/scale/rotate them in tandem!
Why is this feature important to you?
The current workflow is convoluted/unintuitive since it requires users to: 1) select a single clip for modification under the CTI in the Timeline, 2) click on 'Motion' in the Effect Controls Window. 3) make the desired Motion changes in the ECW and/or Program Monitor. 4) repeat steps 1-3 for any additional clips/titles in the Program Monitor that needed to be changed in tandem.
While this Feature Request may require a 2 step implementation, first allowing the direct selection of a single clip, and later allowing the selection/Motion manipulation of 2 or more clips at the same time, allowing a single clip to be directly selected in the Program Monitor for now would be a big step towards finally making it possible to change the Motion attributes of 2 or more PIPs at the same time.
NOTE: For direct clip selection to work effectively, the 'selectable' bounding box of titles would have to be automatically restricted to the dimensions of the Text itself, and not default to the dimensions of the Video Settings as is currently the case, since otherwise, it would not be possible to directly select a clip under a title of equal video dimensions.

What to you mean by 'total different fixed effect properties' Ann?
Modifying the selected clips in the Program Monitor would automatically update each clip's position/scale/rotation values independently.  No need for more than one ECW as you imply.
So if
Clip 1 = X:960 Y:200 and
Clip 2 = X:500 Y:400,
moving both clips to the right 50 pixels together would result in
Clip 1 = X:1010 Y:200 and
Clip 2 = X:5050 Y:400
Same with scale. Example
Clip 1 = 25
Clip 2 = 50
doubling the size of the clips in the Program Monitor would result in
Clip 1 = 50
Clip 2 = 100
While 2 or more clips are being modified in Program Monitor, any Motion values that are not identical between all selected clips could be displayed as '-', meaning different values are present.  Inputing a number value would automatically add that value to all selected clips.
For example, Scale:
Clip 1 = 35
Clip 2 = 42
Clip 3 = 12
ECW value displayed as '-'.  Type 50 into this field and all three selected clips would automatically be given an identical scale value of 50.
Hope this makes sense.

  • I can not select clips in the program monitor?

Normally I can double click on the sequence program monitor and select clips to scale and move about.. but for some reason this is not working? This happened to me once before but I forget how I fixed it.. I think it was a hotkey or something?
Any ideas how to enable this feature again?

Just position the playhead over the clip  double clicking in the PW should also work, at least it does for me.
Selecting clip and clicking on the Transform Icon in the Effect Controls comes in handy when a clip is superimposed by another clip.

  • Manipulating multiple video tracks in Program Monitor?

I'm a recent convert to Premiere Pro CC from Final Cut Pro 7 and am trying to determine if here is a comparable function for two features...
First, let's say I have a clip on Timeline Video track 1 and another above it on Timeline Video Track 2.  Further, let's say I've cropped the clip on Video Track 2 and created a split screen between the two clips.
Now, let's assume I want to move BOTH the clip on V1 and V2 a little to the left.  In FCP7, I could grab both V1 and V2 IN THE PROGRAM Monitor, and drag them both simultaneously a little left, right, up or down together.
In Premiere, can't seem to grab more than one video track in the Program Monitor at a time, without nesting the clips which is an extra step.  Is there a way to grab more than one video track in the Program Monitor so I can adjust multiple elements at the same time?
I also noticed that if I GROUP the clips, I loose all EFFECT CONTROLS functionality in the panel.  Why is that?
My second question is about keyframing.  In FCP if I wanted to place a keyframe across Motion, Scale, Crop, ect all in one keystoke, I could do it with CONTROL K.  I don't seem to be able to to that in Premiere Pro.  Is there a way to place keyframes across Position and scale at the same time in one keystoke?
Thanks you in advance for any guideance.

You can change the position of one clip at a time.  If you nest those two clips, that it will be treated as one.
Keyframes can be moved in a group by selecting, but only added one at a time.

  • Three Way Color Corrector: turn off green clipping info in program monitor???

How can I turn off the green indicator in the program window, that highlights my blacks that contain no image information. I applied a three-way-color corrector via an adjustment layer. Many thanks!

    Hi Joe,
I am running on a MacBook Pro, OSX 10.8.3, my graphics card is:
Chipset Model:          Intel HD Graphics 3000
      Type:          GPU
      Bus:          Built-In
      VRAM (Total):          512 MB
      Vendor:          Intel (0x8086)
      Device ID:          0x0116
      Revision ID:          0x0009
      gMux Version:          1.9.23
I shot on a flat picture profile with a Nikon D800 and played with the input levels in the 3-way-color corrector. Again, if I brighten the whole image, these indicators will disappear; if I darken the image, they will grow. It is not an artefact, it is a way to show me my crushed blacks. Like a zebra function in cameras. I just cannot find a way to turn this off.
    Thanks again,
    Carl

  • Clip only displays when moving in program monitor

Coming from CS6, I am trying to get up to speed with CC Premiere 2014.  I've noticed that when the select zoom level is set to anything less than 100%, the clip in the program monitors goes black when it is not playing.  In other words, if the level is set to Fit or 75%, i can not see it once it stops playing.  Has anyone seen this behavior and more importantly,  can you tell me how to correct it?
    Thank you!!

John, Thank you for the links on wrappers and codecs....very informative.
Sorry it took so long to get back with you....life happens...anyway, i have attached a screen shot of what i'm seeing in premiere pro cc 2014.  The files are .mp4 files that I downloaded from the Infinite Skills site as I am taking the self paced Adobe Premiere Pro CC Master class online.  The behavior is consistent regardless of he workspace i use....editing, color correction or audio, etc.
I also tried the same files within Abobe PP CS6 and the behavior described above does not occur.  The screen shot shows what happens in CS6.
I could be mistaken but this leads me to believe it is a setting issue within premiere and not necessarily a codec or wrapper issue......but at this point, i am certainly open to suggestions.
    Thank you.

  • Program Monitor - I'm not seeing whole clip when playing back

I'm real worried!  Having spent days of my life importing video and editing it - and then trying to fix my problem of only seeing a part of the playing-back clip in the program monitor which led me onto your site.  I've spent hours looking at your posts (and indeed Adobe help pages) trying to solve this and clearly (I think!) my original sequence settings have been wrong.  Maybe I can come back to that because I'm really not sure how to set these correctly.  My initial question please, if I complete my editing and then export this file, will I still only see part of the clips in the final version, or will I see the whole of the original movie clip?
    Some information:
    - Windows 7
    - Premiere Pro CS4
    - Program Monitor setting is "Fit"
    - 16:9 aspect ratio
    - PAL (based in the UK)
    - Sony HD camcorder - SR12E
    - 1920 x 1080i HD
Phew, hope that's enough information for you to 'kick start' me!
    Thank you.
    Regards, Doreen.

Would you also be able to tell me if the Sequence Preset below is my correct preset for the future.  Thanks.
    - AVCHD
    - 1080i
    - AVCHD 1080i30 60i (Amamorphic)
Oh, it's like a new language!
    Regards,
    Doreen.

  • Direct Selection Issues- CS5

When using the direct selection tool, even though objects are selected it isn't showing as selected. It wont show me the anchor points or handles either, making manipulating objects very hard. I must have just hit something, but I'm not sure what it was, any help out here would be greatly appreciated.

The toggle for Show/Hide Edges (which also affects anchor points) is Cmd(Ctrl)-H.

  • Drag Select Inside Points With The Direct Selection Tool While Above An Object?

I'm trying to modify a path in InDesign CS5 (Fig. 2), as it is now I have to select each point individually. Becasue while you're zoomed in (Fig. 1), you can't drag and select the points. When you attempt to do that, you end up dragging the whole image.
Is there a way to drag select inside points with the direct selection tool while your directly above the image with the paths you want to select?
    Fig. 1
    Fig. 2

    FAIL #1:
No. When you copy paste the Cliiping Path [NOT the frame] into Illustrator, then alter the path and paste back into Indesign, it pastes it back as a FRAME, NOT a CLIPPING PATH.
    FAIL #2:
Why do people comment on this stuff without first testing what they are suggesting?
What you suggested doesn't work or even make sense.
Apprently in InDesign, you can't have a CLIPPING PATH without an IMAGE there to begin with. When a FRAME OBJECT contains an IMAGE the option to convert the object to an UNNASSIGNED OBJECT is greyed-out, as in UNSELECTABLE, as in NOT POSSIBLE, which is another way of saying IMPOSSIBLE, which in most circles pertains to MAJOR FAILAGE.
When you CUT [hold command then press X] the CLIPPING PATH, from the FRAME/OBJECT you can then unassign the object, but when you paste the CLIPPING PATH back in, it invariably pastes the IMAGE along with the CLIPPING PATH, and once again the UNASSIGNED OBJECT is simply an ordinary frame with an image, and thus NO LONGER AN UNASSIGNED FRAME.
People like you make life harder dude, seriously.
Again, like some of the folks above, you're confusing a FRAME PATH [that you can alter and create with the pen tool as well] with a CLIPPING PATH. They are NOT the same thing.
Know the difference between the two before you feel inclined to respond.
My kingdom for someone out there with some merit and sense of accountability.
It's like, where do you people work? Are you serious? SMH.

  • How can I select just the clips, or just the transitions?

If I have a timeline with 50 or more clips (or still shots, in my case) with cross dissolves between each one, I would like to select just the clips, or just the transitions, but not both. How do I do this?
Why? I am creating a video with hundreds of stills and a few video clips, and occasiionally need to change the duration of all stills at the same time (from 3 seconds to 4, for example). Or, if I want all of the cross dissolves to last 1:15 instead of 1:00, it would be nice to select and change them all at once. However, in both cases, I can't figure out how to select all 50 without having to Command-click 50 times.
Any ideas you have will be appreciated.
    Bart

To perform the same duration change on just the transitions (cross dissolves, in this example), this technique will work:
    Open timeline index.
Enter "cross" in the search box (or whatever transition you're wanting to change).
Select all cross dissolves in list (click one, then type Command-A).
Click the time strip in the top of the timeline area.
All of the transitions in the list should now be selected in the timeline.
    Control-D to change duration.
    Enter new duration.
    Hit Return.
I hope this saves someone all of the time I spent on it today. I'm still ahead, though, thanks to Tom's help. This saved litterally hundreds of Command-clicks.

    Thank you.
And another question if the data is already there in the child table if i try to load alone it must delete the old data in the child tablee and need to get load the new data and
    How to do this ?
    Arunraj Kumar
You can do that with an IF EXISTS condition
    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1
    FROM YourChildTable c
    INNER JOIn @temptable t
    ON c.Bkey1 = t.Bkey1
    AND c.Bkey2 = t.Bkey2
    DELETE t
    FROM YourChildTable c
    INNER JOIn @temptable t
    ON c.Bkey1 = t.Bkey1
    AND c.Bkey2 = t.Bkey2
    INSERT INTO YourChildTable
where Bkey1,Bkey2 etc forms the business key of the table

  • How do I select multiple video clips in iMovie?

I want to select a lot of video clips from the Event Library in iMovie and move them into a Project for editing.
However as there are no up/down arrows on the scroll bar it is really difficult to highlight/select using the cmd button (as I then need to grab the scroll bar and move it down at the same time).
Is there an easy way to do this?
For instance, can I change the clips from visual to a list of file names that I could just then transfer to my project and then switch back to the visual view of each file/clip?
    Thanks.

You can also select 'ranges' of clips as you describe using the Shift key. First select #1 clip, hold down Shift, then click on the #29 clip. This will get ALL the clips between #1 and #29 without clicking individual clips or selecting all and chippping away. Same goes for the second example. Click once on the #71 clip then hold down Shift, and click the #100 clip, and everything in between will also be selected. So there's two kinds of clicking:
    1. Command/Click (for selecting or deselecting one at a time)
    2. Shift/Click (for selecting ranges or deselecting ranges of clips all at one time)

  • Direct Selection Tool - Shape Layers in Photoshop CC Issue

I just upgraded to CC and the first major road block is the new way the direct selection tool works. In my CS6  work flow I would use the direct selection tool to jump between shape layers within the document layer. Then once the correct shape was selected I would click drag select the anchor points I want to adjust. This seems to be impossible now in CC. You can still jump between shape layers but you have to be in "All-Layers" which really hurts when I want to click drag to select specific anchor points because it selects all shapes below it. And with Active-layer selected you can't jump between shape layers with the tool but you can click drag select anchors with out selecting and shapes below the layer. The basically cut functionality right down the middle…
Below I made a very simple video showing the issue (CS6 = first PSD and CC = 2nd PSD)
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/pjlvwzmli9ihczd/CCProblemBroadband.m4v
As you can see in CS6 I could fly between layers and adjust everything with out ever changing to another tool or jumping to the layers window… I can no longer do that in CC with out having the dumb issue of also selecting the layers below it, which I don't find useful 99% of the time. Is there a setting to make this work like it did in CS4-CS6???? In my line of work, we work a lot with shape layers and this is causing more time to my work day.
    Thanks

1000x this. My designs are 100% vector shapes, so if Adobe have changed this core behavior intentionally, they’ve just made my life a lot more difficult.
We should be able to use the Direct Selection Tool to select a shape layer (similar to how the Move Tool has done) by clicking on any visible pixel. But then we should be able to freely drag-select points on that shape (starting from any neutral area) without selecting other shape layers. This is how it’s worked since before I can remember.
Here’s why the two new selection modes don’t work:
Active Layers - I can no longer freely select any visible shape. Instead I’m forced to make a time-consuming roundabout to the layer palette, where I have to squint to find my shape layer, and activate it manually before continuing. (Hitting “V” to select a layer, then “A” to get back to the D.S. Tool is nearly as cumbersome. Plus, I leave off the Move Tool's auto-select mode.)
All Layers - Treats all my shapes as if they’re on one layer. Overlapping shapes are therefore impossible to work with -- mainly drag-selecting and deselecting points -- in situ.
We either need a “legacy” setting, or some way to constrain selection on drag, via a key modifier or something. This “all or nothing" thing doesn’t work for me... and apparently for others. Why would they change such a thing?
Or maybe there’s something I’m missing. Please let that be the case!

  • Selecting and moving clips to the right of the TCI

Is there a way to be able to move the editted clips that are to the right of my current TCI, and keep the edits as they are?
I'm looking for a ripple delete with more control if that makes sense. My old editting software had a group tool which alowed me to make a cut and move every edit to the right, to exactly where I wanted to move them. I tried using the track select, but it only works on the track I drag, even if I select more than one track.

I'm not sure what the tool is called--I call it the "A-Tool" because you hit "A" to get it to come up. Anyway, hit "A" on your keyboard and shift+click on the left-most clip that you want to move, and it will select that clip and all clips to the right of it, on all tracks. Then you can move them over. If you don't shift+click, but just click, it will select only the clips on the single track.

  • How do I turn off preview of hidden areas when dragging an image in frame with Direct Select Tool?

CS5, Not sure how to word this...
In previous version of ID, if I had a graphic in a frame, I could drag the image around inside that frame with the Direct Selection Tool.  I can still do this with CS5 but it seems to want to show the entire image in a ghosting way that is outside of the frame.  Is there a way to turn this preview type look off like it was in previous versions?  I feel like its slowing my computer down bigtime because I am dealing with a large image.  Everytime I click to drag it, everything slows to a crawl and unusable.

Go to the Prefernces and set Live Screen Drawing to Delayed.

  • Direct selection tool not working

Im trying to use the direct selection tool, but instead of moving objects its only moving anchor points.. how can i fix this? it doesn't usually happen!! Im using illustrator CS6
    THANKS!!!

    godcoma,
I believe the (normal  black arrow) Selection Tool is what you are after here.
If you ClickDrag an Anchor Point of an unselected object with the Direct Selection Tool, only that Anchor Point will be dragged along. If the whole object is selected, the whole object will be dragged along. You may select the whole object in the Layers palette if that is what you wish.
