Frame rate trouble

I just finished animating a project using Flash CS6.  I'm relatively new to CS6 having previously been using CS3 but so far haven't had much difficulty.  Until now that is.  I've been rendering out my scenes as png image sequences to then import into Premiere CS6 for editing. I'm animating 24 frames per second but when I import them into Premiere they're playing too fast.  There's some dialog scenes too and the lipsync no longer matches.  I double checked my sequence settings in Premiere and the frame rate for the video and sample rate for the audio all match up.  I recently finished another, very elaborate, project using this same technique but with the CS3 versions of both programs and had no problems. I'm assuming that this issue is happening in Premiere and has nothing to do with Flash but I thought I'd pose the question here just in case there's been some changes made to Flash that I haven't discovered yet that might possibly be the cause of this problem.  Have there been any changes when it comes to rendering that would effect the framerate of the outputted file?  When rendering image sequences you're given very little options and frame rates aren't any of them...which makes sense for an image sequence of course...but I'm getting a little desperate here haha.

the way flash handles framerate is unchanged from cs3 to cs6.

  • IMovie Frame Rate Troubles

I am trying to make a montage video. I've imported a YouTube video through QuickTime into iMovie and changed the frame rate so the clip matches the project. But the video still apears jumpy, anyway I can resolve this?

What are the frame rates of your project and of the YouTube clip?
Keep in mind that if your project is, say 30fps, and you add a clip to is that ist only 15 fps, all iMovie can do is duplicate frames so that there are 30 per second.
In other words it can't create intermediate frames that don't exist and the clip will appear jumpy.

  • Video doesn't slow when added to timeline of different frame rate

I'm having trouble understanding what's going on here.  I have a video shot at 59.94 fps, and I add it to a sequence that is set at 29.97 fps.  It plays back normally which makes sense if premiere is dropping frames by 1/2, but the drop frame indicator says that it isn't dropping frames.  The clip also runs the same length.  The interpret frame rate for the clip in the project window says 59.94 fps, so if it's added to a sequence that is set at 29.97 fps and it's NOT dropping frames, shouldn't it be slowed down?

OK cool thank you very much.  So I've been doing some research to figure out the best way to edit this project.  The problem is that I have some GoPro videos shot at 1080X1920 and 59.94 fps and some at 480X840 and 240 fps.  But the catch is I want to make the final product work well for Youtube.  This is how I feel I should go about getting the best quality for my final video.
    1.  Set the sequence settings to 720X1280 (which is what I will export as so that the 480X840 doesn't loose as much quality compared to having to resize up to 1080X1920 to match the other clips).  I don't think there's much quality loss in down-scaling the 1080X1920 to 720X1280 (if any, or is there?), so it's kind of a happy medium for both frame sizes that I have and it's still good for Youtube.
    2.  Apparently Youtube really works well with 29.97 fps, so this is what I will set the sequence frame rate at.
**Another side question I have is what if my sequence frame rate is set at 29.97fps and I interpret the frame rate of a 59.94fps clip as 29.97fps and add it to the sequence.  Now if I use the rate stretch tool to speed up the now slowed down clip to 200% so that it plays at normal speed.  Will Premiere remove frames to speed up the clip or does it really increase the rate of the frames so that I don't loose any frames?**  My guess is if I export at 29.97fps it will remove half of the frames.
Is it not possible to have an exported movie clip that contains multiple frame rates?

  • Canon Vixia HF20 and "Progressive" frame rates: how do you edit them in PE7, or any PE version?

My owner's manual is splayed before me: I have these options with my  Canon HF20 Camcorder:
I can record video in: 60i (standard) - I guess they mean "default"
I can also record in PF30 and PF24.
    It says this:
PF30: 30 frames per second, progressive. Use this frame rate to easily edit your recordings, for example, to post them on the Web.
(I do post my videos on the web: indeed that is all I do with them. The Web is a free storage closet that we get as a bonus, by paying for monthly Internet charges.)
    My manual also says this:
PF24: 24 frames per second. progressive. (That is what it says - progressive.) Using this frame rate will give you recordings a cinematic look. When combined with the Cine Mode recording program, the cinematic look will be enhanced.
I have noticed no interesting differences. And editing these .mts files is a pain, no matter what format one uses.
I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation, regarding AVCHD and editing problems using any version of PE.
I constantly have trouble with artifacts - ghosting - combing - all manner of problems, which is enhanced by using the available HD. That is, in 1920x1080, the drop-frame system creates highly compressed, problematic files.
These are hard to edit, but can be done decently using a kind of sleight of hand. I often downgrade 1920x1080 to 720p in editing, just to get the jumpy quality to look decent. This usually works.
I wonder what others do. I really miss 8mm. ... sylvester

The 60i setting should work best with PRE with the Full HD 1080i preset.
As for performance that can be highly dependant on your system and how it is set up. By default most PC's startup with a whole load of cr*p provided by your supplier - all of which can eat into your performance. Anti-Virus software (especially McAfee) can cripple PRE. Try working through the steps in this article: PrE Hanging, or Crashing - Some Tips. If that doesn't solve your issue then this article lists the things we need to know about your system and clips - Got a Problem? How to Get Started

  • Premiere Pro EDL not loading correct frame rate in SpeedGrade

Having trouble getting an EDL generated from PPro to open properly in SpeedGrade. The EDL export comes into SpeedGrade as a 24fps sequence even though the PPro sequence is 25fps. Then when I try to link the media in Sg the I get a mismatched frame rate error. Most annoying and I can't figure out where it's going wrong. Don't want too use Dynamic link because I can't have grading layers in Sg using that workflow (as far as I can see, though I'd be happy to be proved wrong). Any ideas anyone? Cheers. Pete.

I have just created a new project in Speedgrade, then edited the options to the matching frame rate
then I close out Speedgrade, use the Premiere Pro dynamic link and then the new Speedgrade frame rate has remained and now matches
I have heard if you add an adjustment layer in Premiere Pro, then link to Speedgrade, you can utilize that for possibly what you require
I just create my looks in Speedgrade and apply through Lumetri in Premiere

  • Wrong capture frame rate

    Hi,
I'm trying to conform a movie from recapture, and I'm with troubles.
I'm capturing from HDCAM 1080i 59.94 and after capture my material should be 29.97fps. But always is different.
Sometimes is 29.95 or 28.54 well... severals differents values.
I see the speed of image is OK, I haven't drops.
But when go to conform the timecodes doesn't match.
FCP shows correct frame rate on Bin, but QT shows these variables frame rates.
Anothers programs as Autodesk Smoke and Assimilate Scratch recognize the wrong frame rate too.
I have a Mac Pro 12 core, using the latest Snow Leopard, FCP Studio 3 and QT.
For storage have a External SAS disk array with 32 TB wich has a sustainted througput of 700MB/s (fully tested and OK).
For capture I'm using a Aja Kona 3.
Actually I already saw this problem in anothers versions of FCP and anothers machines.. but I never get to fix it.
Please, someone already had this problem and fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thiago Cabral

QT almost is always wrong.  It plays what it can... and with Snow Leopard, QT X is just worse.  The fact that Smoke and Scratch report the wrong frame rate is really puzzling.  Try this...use the CONFORM option in Cinema Tools to conform the footage to 29.97.  Might be just the thing needed to LOCK that frame rate still.

  • FCE4 and frame rate issues

    Hi All,
I'm totally new to FCE and video editing in general, and have dived in with two feet. I'm trying to edit some screencasts I have produced. My main aim is to cut out dead sections of the screencast and add a voiceover to them. I tried various screencast-specific bits of software, but they didn't seem to allow much in terms of editing, and one (Camtasia Mac) decided to eat a day's worth of work by corrupting the saved file.
So, I thought I'd grab a copy of FCE and give that a try. I've bought Tom Wolsky's FCE4 Editing Workshop Book (whose name lead me to this forum). I was also quite interested in the voiceover feature that FCE has, as that should come in useful as that is the main reason I'm editing these screencasts in the first place.
The main issue's I've been having is that FCE is intended for DV editing, and I'm trying to edit a screencast, so I'm going slightly against the flow here. e.g. my screencast was captured using QT X at 1024x768. Which FCE can't deal with (I only found out after buying FCE... I head FCP can deal with non-DV standard frame sizes, but it beyond my budget). So I've been using MPEG streamclip pretty successfully to convert the H.264 source into Apple Intermediate scaled down and padded to 1280x720. I can then export from FCE back into Apple Intermediate and into MPEG Streamclip to crop off the pillarboxes and save to the final output format.
I've come to the conclusion that as long as I can get my source material into what FCE expects from a DV cam then it seems to handle it OK.
Some of the test clips I imported into FCE seemed to work fine, but then the longer full length source (about an hour) had trouble. The speed had gone all funny. I looks like the screencast source is at around 4.6fps and FCE decided that it should really be 46fps! One of the test clips appeared to be 5fps, and FCE seemed to be OK with that and kept it at 5fps.
I'm currently re-converting the source with MPEG Streamclip to 29.97fps and hopefully that will import OK (even though it is taking ages to convert and I'm writing this sitting here patiently!).
So was wondering if anyone know what the deal is with frame rates in FCE. Why does it sometimes seem happy with my low 5fps rate, and sometimes it decides it should be 10x faster. And does anyone else have any further comments or suggestions/tips about using FCE for editing screencasts?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Tom, thanks for the help. I'm currently running it through Streamclip now as I type. Hopefully that should sort it. I guess screen capture software use a lower frame rate as they don't need to have a high frame rate usually for the stuff they are doing.
    -Matt
PS. btw... great book! Certainly helped me get orientation around FCE. Definately needed as I had no experience of video editing and the workflows and terminology is all foreign!

  • FCPX Mixed Frame Rates? 30fps AND 24fps in same project?

Just got done doing a multicam shoot for a large event where I had multiple people helping me out. We all shot at 1080p on a variety of Canon DSLR cameras and a Go Pro and a MiniDV Consumer Cam. I thought everyone got the memo to shoot at 30fps, and most everyone did, however one of my Canon cameras shot at 24fps. I know I've heard in the past mixing frame rates can cause issue in other programs, and I know FCPX can handle multiple frame rates, but what sort of trouble am I in for if I want to use footage from cameras using 30fps and a camera using 24fps in the same final product? Is the 24fps stuff going to choppy or weird if I use it in a 30fps sequence/project? My final deliverable at this point can be 30fps or 24fps, it is not stated and I want to make sure evrything looks good so what should I set my project settings for? Any ideas?

Ah - no - conforming simply resets the frame rate information. You should re-conform it back to 29.97...
Here's what I think you'll need to do. If the majority of your material is at 23.98, make your main sequence that. Cut everything at that 23.98 - you'll have to render any 29.97 material then, but when you've locked picture, look at the sections with 29.97 stuff and if it looks okay, just skip to making the DVD. If it doesn't, you'll have to insert a pulldown by exporting your sequence then bringing the quicktime back in, adding a pulldown with Shake ($500) or Nattress frame rate converter ($99) - OR try this - edit it to tape and a pulldown will be inserted, then recapture.
Once you have a 29.97 version of your clip, cut it into a 29.97 sequence and re-cut in the 29.97 material (now you won't need to render). Then export for your DVD.
Now - after all this, are you sure that your 30fps material is NOT 29.97 with a pulldown? Did you check this yet?

  • IMovie - "Convert Entire Clip" reduced clip's frame rate

    Hi,
I was making a video using iMovie.
I wanted to speed up or slow down some clips, so I clicked the "Convert the Entire Clip" button.
After the clips were converted, I noticed that the frame rate of my clips was reduced. It looked lagging in most part of the clips. The original format of the clips is mp4, iMovie converted them to .mov format
Is there a setting to improve/maintain the frame rate during the conversion?
    Thanks.

Thanks to all who have responded,
I had planned to create short movie clips for emailing but wanted something quick and easy to do so.
It would be great if I could from iMovie select a clip and share to QT then email the results but it seems that each time I will have to ‘work’ on the clip to prepare it for sharing. I don’t want to go to that much trouble each time so I doubt I will use this means.
I don’t understand why it is not easy to do so. Each time I try to open a QT clip in WMP it says it can’t use the file. I had hoped it would convert the movie to MPV or better if QT would convert to something other than files most PC’s won’t open. There are now four PC users that can’t open the file and one that can. 1 out of 5 is not too impressive.
By the way, I don’t know what Sorenson is.
I create numerous iMovies but never use QT even though I keep buying Pro each system upgrade just in case.
Is there a quicker solution to sharing by email?

  • ISight + Slow Frame Rate

    Hello,
I have been using my isight daily for several months now, and have not had any problems. Two days ago I started experiancing very low framerates, but for my side of the video. I can see the other person clearly and at a good frame rate, but the other person gets a slide show. When I'm not connected I see everything clearly, but when in the video chat, the little window with me in it is also very slow. What can be done to stop this.
I chat with my girlfriend who has a powerbook with tiger so our set ups are almost identical.
Can you please tell me who is mostlikely causing this and what can be done to fix it.
    Thank you,
    Stanislav Jidkov

Hello rhondageske. Until you get a response from Stanislav Jidkov, here are a couple of other ideas you can consider.
If you have already tried all the relevant suggestions in How to get iChat AV working again without success, both you and your chat buddy whith whom you experience this problem should test with several others to be more certain which system has the problem. Only the system that has trouble connecting with several others will need to do the requisite troubleshooting work.
If you do not have enough available buddies for testing, see this list of Buddy Names for iChat Test for contact info for some users willing to help you test.
If your buddy uses a PC, and if testing shows the problem is with the PC end of the connection, your PC friend may need to tune his system, adjust his video quality and frame rate, or consider the other suggestions for the PC side of the connection in Mac Video Chat with PCs.

  • 60i, 30p or 24p Frame Rates?

I have a Canon XL2 and it allows me to record in 3 different frame rates. I'm wondering if you guys can tell me which one is the best for most all recordings such as weddings and things. Also, I was recording, pausing, and changing those settings during a single recording and when loading into FCP I get time code errors and had trouble getting them to load. Is this normal or is something else maybe wrong?
    Thanks,
    glenn

Your best bet is to experiment with each and see what you like. Stuff I do either ends up on the web or on a DVD so I usually shoot the 24p Advanced on my DVX... the XL2 has the same setting.
That will let you REMOVE the cadence it adds and actually edit in 24frames per second.
However... when you shoot that mode, NEVER:
    1) turn the camera off without stopping the record with the red button
    2) review your material and start recording again
    3) Don't trust the find-end-frame feature either
That said... the rest is easy.
If you do have different scene styles recorded on the same tape, use the log and capture feature to get it off the tape.
    Also, read this page:
    http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/
It deals with the DVX, but the XL2 is the Canon answer to it and has all the same tc features.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • What frame-rate does your computer play 1080p video?

At what frame-rate do the Intel iMacs play 1080p videos? You can test this by doing a Get-Info while the clip is playing. The info window will show how many fps (frames per second) of video is being displayed.
Here's a link to some video clips, be sure to choose 1080p (not 720p or 480p):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/
    -thanks

My 17" Intel Core Duo 1.83 has no trouble playing the 1080 p at 24 fps, it ranges from 23.5 to 24.5 depending on the scene etc. Processor cores running at 60%.
The lower resolution 1080p (it said 1080p but was 1440 by 1080) Didn't even stutter (stayed at 24 fps) when I opened MS Word in Rosetta mode. Even opening Excel, FireFox, iTunes, and iPhoto at the same time and it dropped to 23 fps for about half a second and rebounded to 25.5 fps before settling back at 24 fps.
The true 1080p (1920x1080) dropped to 18 or 20 fps when other applications were opened. I should point out that these tests were run when the video was still downloading. And in some of the very high speed scenes it would drop to 18 or 20 frames/second for a short time (hardly noticeable). Other applications were running during this time as well. This was the 1080p version of http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/higherground.html
I should point out in 1080p the window is too large to fit on the screen of the 17" monitor. For the test I ran it with the image partially off the screen so it is running at native resolution (however it runs just as fast at any window size). 1080p is 1920 x 1080, so I imagine this is why the 20" is recommended for 1080p. If you have QuickTime Pro you can watch it full screen mode.

  • How can I increase my encoding frame rate? I have no drops but it's choppy.

I am streaming from a 1280x720@60fps source. Ideally, I would like to output 640x360@25fps, but I am having trouble maintaining 25fps but I don't know why because I am not dropping any frames in the encoder or buffering in my upstream.
I have tried setting the auto adjust to degrade quality but it seems like that is not doing anything to boost the frame rate. It also seems like the frame rate setting is being ignored by the encoder as well as when I set it to 25fps, I can see the frame rate in the encoder log go above 25 fps in low movement scenes.
What can I do to get a more stable frame rate?
    Actual upstream bandwidth is 2200Kb/s
Encoder is set to VP6, 1500Kb/s video + 128Kb/s audio
    Datarate window = small
    Quality = best frame rate
    CPU = Phenom II x4 @ 3.0ghz
Encoder uses about 33% CPU using FME 2.5, 90% CPU using FMLE 3.2

Your camera DOES have a Firewire port. It may be called iLink, Firewire, IEEE1394 or DV.

  • Quicktime shows strange frame rate

Can any one tell me why every clip I digitise through my Kona LH or my Blackmagic ProHD shows a framerate in Quicktime of 24 point something instead on the 25 fps it is meant to be.
Both DVCProHD and 8bit Uncompressed are showing this and its slightly troubling.
FCP sees the frame rate as 25fps in the browser and is very happy but a certain grading package which shall remain nameless can't handle the discrepancy
Im using a Sony HDCam 2000 p Deck into a Kona LH onto an intel with a Huge 2,5TB Fibrechannel Raid.

Thanks - it also shows the frame rate that the clip is stamped with and its this thats bothering me - It reads somewhere between 24.1 and 24.9 (It should say 25fps! as it does on clips that werent digitised in this suite)

  • Frame rate in Flash CS4 Flash Player vs. Firefox Flash Player

    Hi,
I've been building a Flash application and have just published it to a web page for the first time a short while ago. Up until now I have just been debugging it is Flash CS4's flash player. My problem is that the frame rate in the online version is much worse than in the CS4 version. My application has a map in it which you can drag around by clicking and dragging with the mouse. When I debug my application in Flash CS4 the frame rate is perfectly smooth. But when I try it online, the map keeps jumping, even if all the graphics displayed in the map are embedded in the .swf file.
Does anyone know what the problem here might be?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the fun!
Unfortunately this is the way it is. It is really impossible to say anything certain as the OS / Browser type (FF, IE etc) / Browser version (2,3,4) / Plugin version can all form a pretty deadly mix of variables.
My experience has been that on a fast mac and older pc... previewing swfs in CS4 has been pretty crumby as opposed to most browser plugins. I get a much better experience in a browser.
Some versions of FF can get bogged down by Flash. Although I shun IE for web browsing it usually handles flash the best.
I think most people will tell you that Safari + Flash can really get a mac's fans going with some large cpu spikes.
Are you using fonts in the map? Are they set to "anit-alias for readability"? That might be something to look into.
If you post a link to your work, maybe some people can chime in with their experience and we can narrow it down to a certain version of FF or see if anything jumps out as a "trouble area" in your execution.
