Freezing/beachballing/lockups when using foreign wifi

Like my new Air it's pretty stable accept for one phenonmenon when I get on outside wifi networks. It goes like this:
-Get on open wifi network from somewhere work a little bit.
-Close macbook and packup.
-keep macbook closed long enough for standby to kick in (70 minutes)
-Return home and open up macbook air.
Internet connection refuses to work. Launching apps will trigger beachballs, quitting apps will trigger beachballs (sometimes on certain apps, sometimes on all of them). Hard to logout or restart because locked up apps are blocking the process. Sometimes I can succesfully log out and restart the system, which will fix the problem. Sometimes I am not as lucky and I have to force shutdown.
It's difficult for me to recreate the issue since I have to go out to do that. I have resetted the SMC, I can't tell if that will help.  I'm sure it is related to connecting to outside wifi networks because this is the only general condition when this will happen. I hope I don't have to constantly do restarts and SMC resets to keep this from happening. My mid 2007 iMac was never this flakey.
Has anyone had a similar problem?

Just a follow up...
I was never able to get to the specific cause of the problem. I reformatted and the problem never came back. The only difference was that I restored my system by manually copying off my backup rather than using Migration Assistant. (MA)
That was the first time I had used MA and I had told MA to only copy home folder/user files from the old system in hopes of minimizing potential issues. I can only conclude that MA had caused an issue with the installation.

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

  • Anyone notice character count when using foreign letters?

Character count is typically 160 max when typing SMS, EXCEPT if you use one of the international keyboards (which I use a lot). I was just typing in Portuguese, and the character count dropped to 70 max. I had been writing to a Brazilian friend and she says my messages are getting chopped up, probably because of this limitation. Anyone else have this problem and/or know if there's anything I can do about it?

SMSs using foreign characters use UTF-8 (8-bit) text encoding, rather than Latin character SMS which use ASCII (7-bit) text encoding.
It's not a problem as such, and applies to all phones. It's just a limitation of the encoding used for foreign characters. Foreign characters simply use up more space.
There's nothing you can do about it.

  • App Store won't load when using our wifi

App Store won't load when using wifi

So I'm having this problem with my Ipod 5th gen. I tried absolutely everything but the router suggestions. Mainly because this problem isn't just at home, it's everywhere. I can connect to every free wifi or pass-worded wifi (with the correct password) just fine. But I can't access the internet or apps using the internet at all. Full signal like everyone else. Just no results. Took every tip in this forum and nothing has worked. Even tried deleting the apps that weren't working and re-installing just to make sure it wasn't just a crappy connections with the internet. NOTHING! Someone please help? I'm starting to think it might just be the antenna or the fact that it's about 2 years old and kind of abused. It's been working up until I recovered it after 2 1/2 months of being last in the mix of pants that were packed away. Didn't get washed or anything just had the battery die while it was sitting there. Found it yesterday and starting today I can't access Safari, Youtube, the App Store, or anything else that requires an internet connection. What should I do? Should I take it in to the Apple Store and get it checked out? Or is there something I can do by myself?

  • Flash freezes (halts/hangs) when using SLC FastForward flash based product. Help!

I'm using Windows XP SP3 - Chrome Version 23.0.1271.97 m, Firefox 17.0.1.  - i7 Q Core 3.4 Ghz, 4 Gb DDR 3, AMD Radeon HD 6452 (Video Card) : The screen seems to completely lock up with no response from the HID (Keyboard, Mouse). I have to restart the computer, sometimes it will let me restart the browser. I'll be using the product for several minutes and the computer locks up. It mainly occurs in Chrome and am wondering; since it's a peppered version of Flash that it's requiring more resources from the video card (512mb) it's locking the system up. Anyone have ideas why flash would be failing/freezing during the use of this product? The symptoms and behavior are similar to those that occur when using other flash based products such as YouTube. Any one have any ideas?

the next time it happens, post your logs. /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be one of things to look at. Check your CPU usage at that time. See what process or processes are taking most of the CPU cycles and/or memory and other resources.

  • Machine freezez/lock ups when using password protected certificates in IE 11 Windows 8.1 Pro

When using certificates that have a password enabled and private keys we find the machine hangs up competly with the memory usage jumping to 99%. The main process being the Local Secuirty Authority Process that causes the machine to lock up. The work
around we have is to remove this certificate and import a new certificate making sure we un-tick the check box for private key password.
    Not sure if this
KB2813237 is linked, but this hotfix is available for Windows 8.1 Pro OS.

    Hi  Simon,
You can try that suggestion and check whether it is solved and give your result, if there is any other issue, you can post it back.

  • Lockup when using stopwatch feature.

Has anyone experienced a lock up of their Nano 3rd gen when using the stopwatch feature? My iPod locked up while a timer was running and the power save settings for the screen kicked in. After the screen shutoff (power save setting) the unit locked up and had to be reset. I was able to reset the unit using the recommended procedure. I was wondering if this has been a problem seen by anyone else?

Yes; I've noticed where my Nano will lock-up when using the Stopwatch. Basically, I don't use it as a stop-watch (nice idea, though).

    Brian,
This problem is a little hard to pinpoint.  When you
say this code works on a Windows 2000 and Windows XP machine do you run it with
the exact same card, or with another DAQ card?  From the code you provided
it looks like you are using the device to generate a pulse train.  Are you
able to run any other code that generates a pulse train?  You might try
    the code located here:
    http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/niepd_web_display.display_epd4?p_guid=B45EACE3DFFB56A4E034080020E74861&p_node=201235
Are you able to perform other types of operations with this device, perhaps
analog input?  If you only use Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX)
to create a pulse train, does your computer freeze?  You can test the analog
input and pulse train generation through MAX by expanding Devices and
Interfaces >> Traditional NI-DAQ and selecting your device.  Next
select Test Panels and either Analog Input or Counter I/O.  What version
of Traditional DAQ are you running?  If it is an older version, does upgrading
    your driver help?
Finally, if you still have DAQmx installed (or if you can install it) can you
generate a pulse train in test panels?

  • Photoshop Elements 5 freezes and restarts when using Vista

I have a minor problem with Photoshop Elements  5. When I first start the program and click on 'File' the system freezes. If I wait about 30 or 40 seconds it all recovers and then when working again all is fine. It's really just very annoying when you first start the program and if someone else has had this problem and knows a fix, I would be very grateful.
    Already tried: -
    Uninstalling and re-installing
    Repairing the installation
De-selecting Adobe Active File Monitor V5
None of these worked. The problem seems to be related to running Vista, everything worked fine on my old XP machine.
I am now using an Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows Vista installed as the operating system.

I haven't downloaded the patch, so I will give it a try and let you know if it worked. Many Thanks
Just to update you, I downloaded the patch and opened and closed Photoshop 3 or 4 times with no problem. So fingers crossed it looks like this did the trick. many thanks for your prompt reply.
The patch is available here for anyone else that needs it http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=3569&fileID=3369

  • ITunes video jumps when using iPhone (wifi sync enabled)

    Hello,
I have had many issues with wireless sync for my iPhone, but I am going to focus on one issue here:
(When the wireless syncing is working) and I am watching a film, video podcast, TV show... anything video, on iTunes, if I open my iPhone (not physically connected to the PC) to look at something, maybe just to check the time, the video on iTunes stutters to a halt for a little while. Now, I know this has got to be to do with the iPhone checking in with iTunes wirelessly, almost a ping-negotiation-authentication thing, but is there any way to stop is messing up what I am watching? It is very annoying.
I have Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, iTunes 10.5.3 64-bit, (iPhone iOS 5.0.1), a 1GB Graphics Card, a Core2Duo 2.4Ghz CPU, and 4GB RAM, so it is not like I am underspec'd, and it does seem to be specifically iTunes and wifi-sync related.
Has anyone else experienced this, and has anyone else solved this?

    Hi there,
I also have this exact same problem and have struggled to find any solution that works, and until now have not found anyone else with the same problem.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has any suggestions on how to resolve this.
    I have Windows 7, 32-bit, iTunes 10.5.3.3, iPhone 4 (iOS 5.0.1), 4GB RAM, Intel Quad 2.4Ghz, nVidia GeForce 8800 GT... so as with Buonacorsi, I don't think I'm underspec'd.
I can confirm that if I switch off iPhone wifi syncing I don't have any problems. I keep switching off wifi syncing, but I find more and more that I want to use that function so it is quite annoying.
Anyway, looking forward to hearing any thoughts...

  • Premeire CS5 Freezes on save when using Elgato HD videos

First off, I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 on a 2009 21" iMac running Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.5) with a 3.06 ghz core 2 duo and 12 gigs of ram.
I keep having the program freeze whenever I save a video from my Elgato Game Capture HD. The save bar fills in, but it will sit and the program will not respond, doing the error sound when I click anything. I have to force quite each time, luckily it as far as every time I have done this, saved properly and nothing was lost, but this is seeming like a huge risk every time and not to mention even if it works, that its just aggravating having to force quite and start up every time I want to save.
Originally it would not even import, but I have tried converting the video through an app called miro video converter and this new problem began. I also found I could convert video straight from the Elgato Program, with the same end result. I also did some tests to trouble shoot if its premiere just freaking out on me (trust me ghost problems are pretty common for me) I tested on an iShowU Recording as well as one from my SD Elgato video Capture (which should as I understand have the same H264 compression) and a video I pulled off YouTube just to see how well that works, and they all save just fine.
Also another note, I tried deleting the video from the project and saving as one of the tests and the program still froze without the elgato video even being in the project any more. It seems like once I put an Elgato HD video in the program at all it wont save properly.
Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

The elgato record at 59.97 (I think) I know its the one near 60 frames, and as far as I can tell their is no way to reduce that. In my test the iShowU video had an FPS of 12. I'm not sure if the way it handles lower to higher FPS would cause the problem, but I have had varied frame rates in the past, but the only one that I have that can go over 30 right now is the elgato HD

    $CompObj = [ADSI]"WinNT://$ComputerName,computer"
    $Users = $compobj.psbase.children | Where-Object {$_.psbase.schemaclassname -eq "user"}
What I've found (at least on most of the computers that I have tried) is that the script will freeze if run with "localhost" in the $ComputerName variable (which I often do when testing a script).  The point that it freezes is the "...
    | Where-Object {$_.psbase.schemaclassname -eq "user"}" component of the script.
I verified this by running the following:
    $ComputerName = "localhost"
    $CompObj = [ADSI]"WinNT://$ComputerName,computer"
    $Users = $compobj.psbase.children
    This causes no freeze.
So, the creation of the $Users variable does not cause a script freeze.  However, if I try to display the contents of the $Users variable *after* running the above code, I get a list of all of the local users and groups, before it freezes the script
completely.  Here are the last two entries I get when I run it (removed references to my production domain):
    DistinguishedName :
    Path              : WinNT://acme.local/localhost/Message Capture Users
    distinguishedName :
    Path              : WinNT://acme.local/localhost/WinRMRemoteWMIUsers
PowerShell continues to run at this point, prompting me (in the status bar) to press "Ctrl+Break" if I wish to stop it.  If I do, PowerShell displays "Stopping" in the status bar, and in fact it never finishes stopping
(I have to close Powershell, though not forcibly).  I ran this on a colleagues computer and we found that the output also includes Services (remember that we didn't filter it this time with the "Where-Object" cmdlet.
So, we reason that something about the services causes the script to freeze.  I have tried this on the following (not hugely extensively, one of each):
    Win 7 SP1 x86: Appears to work
    Win 7 SP1 x64: script freezes
    Win 2008 R2 x64: script freezes
    Win 2012 R2 x64: script freezes.
I'm not sure if the architecture is to blame at all, but I don't want to chase this as it's not a high priority; I'm very curious though to know the cause and how to troubleshoot it.
I did trace the problem to the usage of the word "localhost" in the $ComputerName variable; if I use the actual computer name in place of localhost, the script runs exactly as planned and when I try to display the contents of "$User"
it does not freeze before showin the services, and displays the services correctly.
So, I'm trying to identify why this happens - I am thinking that I will have to validate the input into my script to prevent usage of the "localhost" value (or find a clever way to translate that into the hostname itself).
Has anyone experienced this issue before or can help me identify what is causing the behaviour?

Thanks - I'll have my script check for localhost and use "$Env:COMPUTERNAME" to replace it if it does.
It certainly works as expected, since it passes the computername to the ADSI query instead of "localhost", which does.

  • Machine lockup when using World Community Grid software

I have a T60p with 3 GB of memory.  I have all the latest BIOS and Thinkvantage updates.
I run the World Community Grid software (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) which uses my laptop for "worthwhile" scientific computing activities while the laptop is otherwise unused.  This software has a setting to limit the CPU usage of this software.  When I permit the World Community Grid to use 90% of the CPU of the laptop, I get occasional machine lockups, meaning that the machine suddenly stops responding to the keyboard and mouse.  The problem does not happen when I set the software to use 50% of the CPU capacity.
I suspect that this has to do with machine overheating.  The air coming out of the vents gets noticeably warm when running this software.  I am careful to keep the machine in a well-ventilated and airconditioned office-type environment.
I complained about this on one of the World Community Grid forums (https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=18443) , and another user indicated that he/she has the same problem.
So my question: shouldn't the system BIOS prevent the machine from overheating?  I would think that a lockup like this indicates a bug.

    Hi Rodney,
Firstly, thank you for your time replying to my question.
After looking around for this problem, I do think there is a bug in the new firewall that comes with Leopard, the so called Application Firewall (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1810?viewlocale=en_US). With the old ipfw I had not problem whatsoever, but this new one is giving my a headache...
    After reading this
    http://gp.darkproductions.com/2007/11/summary-of-leopard-firewall-issues.html
I guess I will fuss around with the ipfw using a GUI such as WaterRoof (http://www.hanynet.com/waterroof/).
But getting back to the explanations, my situation was exactly where you still are: using one machine with Leopard and the other with Tiger, things were fine. But after upgrading the laptop to Leopard too, the iMac and the MBPro do not talk to each other anymore. Unless, of course, I set both machines' firewall to "Allow All Incoming Connections" -- which is less than desirable, right?
If one machine is with its firewall set to anything different than "Allow All Incoming Connections", than the other cannot see it. Neither through Finder, neither through Go | Connect to server..., nothing.
When I access the firewall's log, I see that the other machine is trying to connect, but all the incoming traffic gets blocked and the message is always the same:
    *Jun 30 21:13:56 xxx Firewall[71]: Deny AppleFileServer connecting from 192.168.1.xxx:53850 uid = 0 proto=6*
Here is another thread in the forum that shows more people suffering from the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1464407&start=0&tstart=0
In the meantime, I will have to be transferring my files using an USB drive... :/
    Thanks,
    BZdM
