Fresh Java install; browser doesn't recognize jnlp MIME type...

Hi Folks,
I was working with a client today to install a JWS app on a number of workstations. First one went fine. Just to be sure they had everything right, switched to another Windows PC. Browser displayed the jnlp file as XML. OK, I figured, must be missing the JRE. So, okay, we install the lastest 1.5 from www.java.com. Well, the browser still doesn't pick up on the MIME type setting and launch JWS--just displays the XML.
And yes, the server is sending the right MIME information because it works on dozens of other PC's at dozens of other sites as well as on the first PC we tried at that location. So then I figure, well, we'll just tell Mozilla that it needs to associate the right application with the MIME type/extension in question--there's no where to add a new association (at least not that I can find).
Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Sorry for the inaccuracy there. We actually tried both Firefox and IE--same result on both of them.
(The 1.5 version of JWS doesn't allow you to put in the URL there--a disappointing circumstance. The whole thing was clearly more complicated than it seemed to me at first--there were already 3 other JREs installed.)

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies do the following:
#Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
#Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
#Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
#From the details list, check ''Cache'' and ''Cookies'' and uncheck everything else.
#Now click the ''Clear now'' button.

JavaWebStart -- JNLP mime type

Hi All,
I was trying to develop a jnlp app in weblogic 5.1. I added the
following to the weblogic.properties
weblogic.httpd.mimeType.application/x-java-jnlp-file=JNLP
but the jnlp file still shows up as plain xml in my browser instead of
launching JWS.
Any ideas ??

Looks alright. Maybe small caps for JNLP? That's what I have in my
weblogic.properties and it works fine.

Weblogic + jnlp MIME Type not recognised

Can anyone help, I'm trying to get JWS to run on a machine that is running a Weblogic & Apache server for a large enterprise app. I've added the jnlp mime type to both the httpd.conf & weblogic.properties file. Depending upon where the jnlp file is situated, it either is returned as xml in the case of the Weblogic dir,hte mime type not being recognised or JWS starts and then throws a text.html error, if the the jnlp file is in the Apache htdocs dir. I've read that Weblogic introduced support for jnlp but my version doesn't include it in the config file. Is there a work around or won't JWS work with early versions of Weblogic?

Cannot view pdfs in Firefox. - Browser doesn't recognize them as pdfs

I cannot view pdfs in Firefox. I checked the Applications section of FIrefox preferences and instead of saying "Adobe Acrobat PDF document"- it says "Adobe Acrobat FDF document. I am guessing that the browser does not recognize pdfs because the content type is incorrect.
I am using a Mac running OSX 10.8.2 and Firefox 17.0, however I have had this problem for several months and several earlier versions of Firefox as well. Please fix this issue. According to the help center forums, I am not alone with this issue.

Thank you for your help. What I ended up having to do was to change the Action next to Adobe Acrobat FDF document to "Use Preview". Then again under the Preview.app Document under Content Type, I had to change that to Use Preview as well. It is now working. However, Firefox (Mozilla) needs to change the word FDF to PDF in their preferences file.

When I try to click on a download link for a .pdf file Firefox does not recognize the MIME type and tries to download the file as "index.php"

When visiting a site I frequent I tried to download a linked .pdf file. Previously I've used Firefox 7.0.1 to download the link with no problem. Using Firefox 8 however I the browser does not recognize the .pdf link's mime type. Instead of recognizing the download link as a .pdf file Firefox 8 tries to download it as "index.php". Firefox 8 does this with .doc files and .txt files as well. When I downgrade to 7.0.1 again the problem disappears.

I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. DVD/CD Disc Drive Installed, But Doesn't Recognize Disc In Tray

I've spent hours and hours trying to fix it, and have found nothing really worthwhile online. I'm coming here in the outside chance someone else may have experienced something similar.
Basically, my Windows 7 laptop will no longer allow me to play dvd/cds (burned or store bought). The drive shows up in My Computer, is enabled, bios look good, etc, etc, but if I put a disc in it never autoruns or shows up with the disc name in My Computer,
and if I double click the disc drive I get a "please insert disc" dialogue box and the drive door pops open. I've tried absolutely everything I can think of, and (for what it's worth) I don't think its a hardware issue because after I sent my computer off
to Samsung for this same repair it came back completely reformatted the disc drive worked for a second. Then I started getting rid of some of the bloat ware in here (bought it at best buy... big mistake) again, and it shut down.
Here's what I've done or tried so far:
- Uninstall, reinstall the drive
- Updated the drivers
- Updated dvd/cd drive firmware
- Ran Microsoft's "Fix it" utility
- Cleaned the lenses/laser
- Remapped the drive to a different letter/path
- Checked registry to ensure filters weren't an issue (the upper and lower)
- Restored the laptop back to just after I received it back from the Samsung repair people (didn't work)
- Undid the restore
- Checked BIOS (I'm by no means BIOS-savvy, but it appeared that everything was in line with what folks were saying it should be)
And probably a few other things I'm forgetting. This is driving me crazy. I just started an online grad class and can't really feasibly send my computer back right now.
Anyone experience anything similar or know of some super magical solution?

Going to your point of "starting an online....", the quick fix (not magical) would be to get a cheap external that would work. If it were my 'puter I'd bring it with me, get the external (and seeing as how you went to BB go back to the same
one) obtain the one you want, have that Geek Squad rep install it for ya right there, No, there should be no dropping it off, USB hookups are quick. You might have to spend a coupla' minutes there though. It works...Great, it don't then have them
find one in your price range...put the onus on them....they sold it to you, have them figger' it out!!!! :=))

Gnome does not recognize flac mime-type

Although listed in the file types configuration tool, and also present in the gnome-vfs mime data with both extension and file-sniffer identification, nautilus nor rhythmbox will recognize any flac files as such, leaving them as application/octet-stream.
I am running gnome 2.6, and have noticed that flac is not present in the shared-mime-info data (i.e. /usr/share/mime). I will try to audio/x-flac to shared-mime-info, but I would also like to know if anyone else is having these problems.

Incase anyone else does have this problem (rhythmbox refuses to open flac files), I have now solved it by adding the audio/x-flac type to the shared-mime-info. If anyone wants it I can supply the files that need to go into /usr/share/mime. After that an update-mime-database /usr/share/mime will make everything work. I can't be bothered to post it if no-one wants it though. It might just be my screwy system..

System does recognize installed Java, but application doesn't (Windows 8)

I have installed latest Java and Sun recognizes and says that I have the latest version. But when an application tries to run Java, it reports that I do not have Java installed!

Do u have Java folder in Program files folders ?

Dynamic JNLP causes exception on 1st run after java install

I have a dynamic JNLP file (php) which runs my software. It works just fine, except for the 1st time it is run after a user has installed Java.
I get the exception; "The following field was missing from the jnlp file: <jnlp>". When I look at the jnlp code in JWS in the "Launch File" tab of the error message, I see that the JNLP is not there - but the page the user would see if he was not logged into the system (as if JWS has cached the file or something).
If I close it down, press F5 to refresh, and run it again everything works fine.

I think you're dynamicallt created jnlp is invalid in someway; I can use the following without any problems:

you should try and test the output of your generated code, something like this should work:

The first time a jnlp is called it is downloaded into the browser cache and javaws.exe is executed on it from that location, this in turn downloads the jnlp again from the passed codebase & href attributes into the jws cache. Subsequent calls the jnlp are extracted from the copy in the webstart cache, and often downloaded from the codebase & href attributes when it detects possible changes. In your case these jnlp files seem to differ.

I also tried using migration assistant with no success.
I just want to use TM to restore files and folders SELECTIVELY.

Oh yeah, and the other thing is, now I CAN'T go back in time using my Time Machine back-up . . . It says I've never backed up now (I guess because this is a fresh install that's TECHNICALLY correct), but I restored from this Time Machine file . . . I just installed update version 11.1.4.62. Now Itunes doesn't recognize my iphone or ipad. My wife just installed the same version with the same result. The problem is clearly a problem with itunes. What's wrong with itunes?

I was running the previous version of itunes and it worked perfectly. I just installed the latest version of itunes (version 11.1.4.62) and restarted the PC and now itunes doesn't recognize my iphone or my ipad. I'm running Windows 8.1 on my pc. I tried diagnostics to no avail. The diagnostic didn't recognize either device. As the directions advised, I closed itunes, disconnected the devices and stopped and restarted the apple mobile device service, That didn't work either. My wife, who also has Windows 8.1, has the same problem. She installed the new version and it doesn't recognize her devices.
Until now, itunes has been totally reliable. I am convinced the problem is with itunes. Where do I go from here?

I resolved the issue by doing the following:
1. Uninstall iTunes and every Apple application (device support and such).
2. Uninstall bonjour.
3. Reboot.
4. Go to Apple and install iTunes.
It worked. When I opened iTunes (after reinstalling) it recognized all my devices, music and video.

Itunes doesn't recognize iphone sim card after installing io5

I sent hours trying to upgrade my Iphone 3gs to io5 and now Itunes doesn't recognize the phone sim card, I only have a message saying 'There is no sim card in the Iphone you are trying to activate'. Iphone is no longer under warranty, so I don't know what to do if doesn't work any more.
