Front USB Ports

I'm hoping someone might be able to help.
I have an MSI 945P Platinum motherboard with an Aspire X-Navigator case.  Running Windows XP.  My back USB ports work fine with no problems.
But if I plug anything into the front USB ports, the system freezes.  I've checked the connections for both USB1 and USB2 - there is no 10th wire or USBOC connected.  But the system still freezes every time I connect anything.   Is there anything else I can try, or do I just forget about it & use the back ports?  Can anyone help?  Thanks.....

okay, i looked again at the usb header
and there was a wire connected to pin 10
so i cut it
started up windows, and amazingly, my front usb ports are now working
i keep plugging in & disconnecting devices - everything i plug in the front ports now work
thanks

  • Can't use front USB port for external Hard Drive

I have had some problems for about the past year with the front USB port on my 2009 13in Macbook Pro 5.5.
As you know, there are 2 USB ports on the left side on a 13inch Macbook pro.  The one closest to me (the front one) works fine when I use it with a flash drive.  But when I connect my external 7200RPM external drive to it, after about a minute, it ejects then re-recognizes the disk.
I video edit with FCP and use the external as one of my scratch disks.
At first I thought maybe it was the cord or the drive that was messed up.  But then I connected my other external drive to this port and the same thing happened.
But when I connected it to the back USB port, everything works fine. I haven't had any trouble.  So i make sure it's connected to that port when using the external.
Why would this be happening.  It only screws up when using a standard external drive but not flash drives or any other peripherals.
    Thanks
    Brandon

    Exactly what Ogelthorpe mentioned.
I bought a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM and bought an external case from Staples that has a big fancy led to show HD activity.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Tested it on my PC and it works all the time so it got me stumped.  Thought it was my MB.
Decided to try another external drive drive on my MB and everything works.  So I returned the fancy external enclosure and bought the simple $10 one.
    Now everything works fine.
Maybe changing your external case might help you.

  • Front USB Ports NOT Working

Really need help from the experts here ------ HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1 Desktop Model: H2M46AA (has Joshua mainboard with Intel H61 Chipset) Hard drive crashed and have no original drivers. Did clean install of Win7 SP1 Home Premium. All OK except Other Devices, Universal Serial bus (USB) Controller. Driver cannot be found. After the Win7 install, installed an ethernet driver and then from HP website installed the Original Chipset files. All drivers OK except the above which apparently controls the front 2 USB ports which didn't work. Next, installed all updates provided by Windows Update. Front USB ports still inoperative. They worked before the new Win7. After much research, inoperable front USB ports appears to be a common problem, but none of the provided solutions help (check cables, power down completely, Intel Driver Update Utility, etc.). On my system, the first of 4 Hardware IDs for this device show as: PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8241&SUBSYS_2ADA103C&REV_02. According to pcidatabase.com, this is identified as: "Texas Instruments USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller", and thus a possible the problem. The ports are, I believe, USB 2.0 and not 3.0 according to Joshua documentation (http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=motherboard&U=en-us0000525 Also, review of "\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log" shows there are no files on the drive associated with the above Hardware ID because they cannot be found during driver installation. So question: How can I get these USB ports working -- have installed every recommended HP update for this system. I'm stumped!

You're right, it's just an update of the driver but I think it is specified, you can see theTechnical Reference: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp70501-71000/sp70786.html TITLE: Texas Instruments USB Controller Driver Update

  • Front USB ports connection to K8N NEO4 Platinum

the system im building resides inside a CODEGEN Briza A Series ATX tower (Part Number E6097), my question has to do with how im i supposed to connect the frontal usb ports of the case to my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum board (MS-7125). the board features 3 yellow colored 9 pin (pin 9 is a key (no pin)) standard USB 2.0 connectors, while my case comes with two frontal USB ports with 2 sets of connectors arranged as follows:
+1 3-pin connector with red, white, green wires labeled "USB 1"
*1 1-pin connector with black wire labeled "GND"
+1 3-pin connector with red, white, green wires labeled "USB 2"
*1 1-pin connector with black wire labeled "GND"
*the black wire is part of the connector itself however is detached from the 3-pin and has its own 1-pin connector, which is "ground"
+the 3-pin features a small triangle at the base of the connector with the red wire.
total pin count for both ports would thereby be 6, as some of you already know this board features a 9 pin arrrangement in its yellow usb connectors.
the manual its pretty clear on the need to make sure those connections are correct to prevent damage to the board or the device attached to those ports,
any takers on this one ?

  • Where are the front USB ports on the HP Envy 700-210 Desktop?

I bought the Envy 700-210 desktop because it has so many USB ports.   However, I can only find 8 - 2 on top and 6 in the back.   According to the specifications, there are supposed to be some in the front.   Do I have to take something apart to find them?
    Thanks.

Here is the Product Specifications page for the computer.  If you look at the picture of the computer in the link, I believe that the front cover below the Red band slides down to expose the USB ports.  This is how it works on my Envy 810-135qe.

  • Lost power to front USB port

With Tiger I could plug any device into my USB port on the front of my dual 2 GIG G5 and it will work. Now with Leopard if the device is not under it's own power, like a portable HD, it is unusable. How can my USB port work fine with Tiger and become unusable with Leopard? I have a lot of portable HD's as I'm a photographer and use the HD's as backups. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Shut down your G5 and unplug everything including the display, FireWire and USB devices as well as the power cord. Let it sit for five to ten minutes completely unpowered. This should reset all the FireWire and USB ports. Plug the display back in, power back in, turn the computer back on and plug your devices back in one at a time. Does this resolve the issue?

  • H8-1534 Windows 7 Front USB port Drivers

Had purchased a  h8-1534 and installed Windows 7 (64 bit) I got everything to work with the drivers provided BUT I can't get the drivers for the top (front) 3.0 usb connections. I can't find those drivers anywere for this computer. Its so frustruating. Please help.

Please post the hardware ID for the USB3 controller needing the driver.
Go to the device manager and click on the usb controller needing the driver.
Then click on the Details tab at the top of the USB Controller window.
Now you should see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that and select the second item (hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters you see in the window.

  • Is the USB Port in the front of G5, USB 1.1

    Hi All,
Can anyone confirm this? Is the USB port in the front of the G5 only USB 1.1? I hooked up a USB hard drive to the front port and the transfer speeds were super slow. I checked the system profiler and it said the max speed was 12Mbs. Then I hooked that same USB hard drive to the back USB port and the speeds increased significantly. I checked the system profiler and it said the max speed was 480Mbs. I thought all the USB ports on the G5 were USB 2.0, or is my front USB port dying ? Please confirm. Thanks.

The USB ports on the G5 itself are USB 2.0. Those on the keyboard which came with it are USB 1.1.

  • If you're having problems with USB ports, read on...

i'm reading that alot of people on here are having problems with their front (or top) usb on their cases not working with their k7n2 boards.  i have come across the correct solution to this problem in one of the posts (after having solved the problem on my own), however noone has posted the solution by itself on this forum so everyone can easily see it.
The trick is to make sure that pin 10 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L), the pin labeled USBOC (USB Open Connection), is wired to NOTHING.  If the connector to your front usb ports is fused into one giant connector and it HAS a wire that will connect to this pin (labeled GND2 or Shield or something), CUT THAT WIRE.  Pin 10 on JUSB2 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L) must be OPEN.  If this pin IS connected to something (even if it is only GND), the motherboard will think something is connected to this usb port and you will get many unknown devices listed in your windows device manager and the rest of your usb ports may or may not work.
As a general rule of thumb, if a pin on a motherboard is labeled OC for "Open Connection" and you wire something to it, you're asking for trouble.
If you cannot understand this you should not be attempting to wire a motherboard in the first place.
Here is a picture to go along with this discussion.  If you cannot see this picture, I am sorry for it has probably been removed from the place I posted it online as I cannot attach pictures physically to this post.  If someone here has a way to permanently host this picture and post it to this thread permanently, that would be wonderful.
In summary: all usb ports/headers have only four pins associated with it (VCC, USB+, USB-, GND).  If the connector (whether it's one big connector or individual sockets) to your front/top usb port has 5 sockets, don't connect the 5th socket to anything.  That goes for any case/motherboard combination.  This is what i'm talking about above.  I have no idea why motherboard and case manufacturers have a 5th pin involved in any way on either the pin or socket side.  It is not used for usb.
EDIT:  I just noticed this has already been discussed in the trouble shooting guide in the above sticky post.  oh well, now we have a pretty picture to go along with it (i hope).

    :-D)Hello guys,
as promised I come back here to give the results of my tests... and I have to say that you saved my day (even if I had to open back 60 secured cases).
So the solution was the right one, when I unplugged the "ground" end of the front USB connector cable from the USBOC pin, those connectors finally worked as expected with USB 2.0 compliant devices.
So thank you really much for this very usefull information !
And even if maybe it's not only MSI's fault, I still believe that more information on those connectors in the user's manual would be really usefull (who knows what USBOC means except a few people and who could imagine that pluggin on it a "ground" cable would make it unserviceable ??). And who ever saw a user's manual bundled with a case ?? it's pretty unusual
Hope that someone at MSI will read that and take it into consideration, not for me (because now I'm aware) but for the thousands other consumers that will feel a little bit "annoyed" with that issue. I don't think that adding one line about it in user's manuals would be so much expensive
But I'm quite lucky myself... being able to understand and write english (even if I still have some progress to do  ) gave me the possibility to find the solution... but a lot of my french fellows can't do that... and there's no french forum here... How can they do ? They rely on user's manual
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

  • USB ports and Pocket Drive Unrecognized (IQ-775)

    Hi all:
With no warning, the two front USB ports stopped  functioning (rear ones are OK) and the Pocket Drive is no longer recognized. Worked one day, did not work the next. This happened simultaneously, so I assume it is related as the Pocket Drive is a USB device.
There is power to all of these ports, as when I plug something into them, or insert the pocket drive, the power lights come on, but the system does not show them. The pocket drive no longer shows on the folder tree, and if I remove it and connect it to a working USB port, it reports 'unknown device', tries to load a driver and fails. The Windows message says, "if this continues to occur, replace device" Easy for them to say!! I have used the Disk Manager, but it too cannot find the pocket drive anymore. Interestingly, the Pocket Drive works fine on other computers as a portable drive and is recognized as "HP Pocket Drive", so there is noting wrong with the device.
The pocket drive has disappeared from the Device Manager, and all of the USB ports show are 'working properly', but of course we don't know which are which or even if the front ports are listed as they are not identified
If anyone knows how to repair this problem or has had similar, I would be grateful. My IQ-775 is out of warranty so the repair is on me. I don't know how USB ports 'fail', but I am sure it is a 'fixable' problem.
The machine is steadily destroying itself, just sitting on the desktop. The WLAN adapter went first (on both of my HP machines), then the display drivers, then the Lightscribe, now the USB ports. Planned obsolescence at its finest!
    Thanks
    DN

Cooper, it's NOT going to be all the devices that are having problems, the OP's issues are related to the USB hub/ports not working properly. Reinstalling drivers for all the USB devices including the Pocket drive that doesn't use any, would be an exercise in futility.
OP, try removing the USB root hubs in question in Device manager and letting the OS put them back on a reboot, that has been known to resolve issues like this, you can also go into the BIOS and do a "reset to default" I know that sounds strange, but it can resolve weird USB issues too.
