Frozen Desk Top

On starting up, the computer goes through its preliminaries, including the startup sound and the progress bar. Then immediately afterwards it brings up the photograph I use as my background screen. The cursor is free but there is nothing on which to click. Then after a few seconds a magnifying glass icon in a blue circle on a small white rectangle appears in the upper right corner of the screen. Clicking on this changes the arrow cursor to the spinning round color wheel. Moving the cursor off the icon changes it back to the black arrow cursor but nothing else happens.
I have been able to boot off the original CD, which uses OS 9.2 and also the the Tiger CD. With that I used Disk Utility but nothing was fixed.
I am afraid to reinstall for fear of loosing the data on my hard drive.

Hi Donald - Hardware-wise, you'll probably want to post topics in this forum, which is dedicated to TiBook Usage. Since this would seem to be a software issue, let's see if we can help you here....
You may have a problem with certain start-up items. One way to begin to look into that is to start up in to 'safe mode' which disables these items, giving you the opportunity to see if your machine boots successfully without these items loading, and if necessary, to remove them from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. To boot into safe mode, turn your machine off, then press the power button and immediately after you hear the startup chime, press and hold the Shift key until you see the spinning gear icon appear on the grey splash screen.
It takes a couple of minutes longer than normal to boot into safe mode, and you will be asked to log in before you get to the Desktop. Once the machine has fully booted, go to System preferences and remove any unneeded or suspect login items.
Restart as normal to return to your normal desktop.
Also, check to make sure that all of your third-party apps and device drivers are up to date, especially if you have any peripheral devices attached on the occasions when you are unable to start up. There are additional third-party startup items located in /Library/Startup Items which may also be contributing to your problem. Do not remove any items from the folder /System/Library/Startup Items, though, as these are a part of the OS.

    Even though it is geared towards applications purchased from the App Store and you're experiencing the issue with all apps, most of the steps would still be applicable to your situation. I would also take a look at the troubleshooting assistant to see if that helps:

  • When I hit reply in hot mail... only about 1/3 of my old email follows me to the reply screen.... it does this only on my notebook but is fine on my desk top... both run windows XP and both have the same version of firefox

    I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
    When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
    At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
    I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

    Have you turned the computer off and then back on (force quit if necessary by holding the power button)?
    Try resetting the SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • I tried to sync some new songs bought from iTunes into my ipod using my laptop, (for the first time).  It would not add the new songs to the ipod.  I tried several times, with same result.  I never had this problem using my desk top computer.

    I also am having a problem with the songs I purchased using the laptop not showing on the desk top itunes, even though it is authorized to do so.  The new songs did show up on the iPad iTunes, however.  Have no idea why.  I thought this happened automatically.

  • IMac G3 Panther, Why do I have three hard drives on my desk top and how do I combine them into one?

    Trying to get an old iMac up to be enough for my four year old to go on the internet.  Upgraded to panther and put an airport card in.  Now problems;
    1.  It can connect to my airport express, but not if I have the password enabled, then it won't, even if I put the password in.
    2.  There are 3 hard drives showing on the desk top, with the space divided between them.
    3.  I've been trying to download an old version of flash, but it never finishes and says it can't write the file or something like that.  I kind of think it has to do with the file being to large and since the hard drive is divided, it won't fit.
    Let me know if anybody can help and thank you for your time....

    Your old iMac can only connect to a WEP network, and yours is probably WPA.  As far as the partitions are concerned, if you don't need any any of the data on it, use your Panther disc and erase and fomat it as one partition.

    I wondered if you can help with some advise. I have a mackbook and love it, will never go back to pc. But, I have a desk top pc with a fairly sizable Hard Drive in it. Even though I also have a WD external Hard Drive for my macbook back up, would I be able to use my old desk top hard drive if I found a case for it to make it an 2nd external hard drive?
    Would I be able to format it for use with my mac? Or is it the bin for all the hardware?

    It'd work just fine. Apple uses pretty much the exact same parts every other computer maker does. The one exception is now they have a temp sensor cable connection built onto drives. Before they just stuck a little plastic clip on them at a specific spot. Other than that, it's no different from any other SATA drive you might buy at the likes of Best Buy or NewEgg. So as long as you partition the drive into a format readable by Mac OS X, there shouldn't be any problems.

    While transferring Adobe from laptop to PC the licensing files got corrupt and the right way to use Adobe Applications is to install first as transferring from a different machine can give you problems.
    You can try steps from this article if that helps otherwise you have to reinstall and manually delete some files , everything is mentioned.

    If you look in the audio output port, is there a red light showing.  If so, the internal switch is stuck..  Insert the headphones a few times, jiggle a toothpick inside or shot some compressed air to trip the switch.  If no success, have the Apple store genius bar technician do it.

    You do not need to cancel the subscription. You can simply follow the article: Creative Cloud Help | Download, install, update, or uninstall apps which will help you to install the Adobe CC application on your new PC.
    If possible you can also deactivate the license from your previous computer using the article: Activation & Deactivation Help.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Have you plugged in another USB device to ensure that the USB ports are working?
    Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic transfer.
