FTP, User Accounts, etc.

Hey all,
I created a guest account under user accounts so I could allow some friends to FTP into my computer and send me some pictures. When I go in Mac HD>Users>Guest all the folders have a little red no access sign in the bottom corner. Is there a way for me to enable my admin account to access this besides FTP'ing into it? I am still very new to Mac so I appreciate the help!

Log in to your Admin account, open Terminal, and enter these two commands:
sudo chgrp -R admin ~guest [press return, enter admin password when prompted]
sudo chmod -R g+rX ~guest
That will allow any administrator to read the contents of the guest home folder.
Suggestion: Instead of using FTP for this, consider enabling File Sharing under System Preferences > Sharing. If your friends are using Windows you can enable Windows Sharing. With these methods, your friends can get read-only access to your ~home/Public folder, and add items to your Drop Box. These methods are generally considered to be more secure than leaving the FTP port open, and will do away with the need to create a separate Guest account.

Unfortunately, at the moment you cannot create two user profiles on one iOS device.

  • FTP user accounts to access AEBS HD

I am pretty new to apple and apple products so this maybe a no-brainer to some folk.
I have an AEBS with a LaCIe HD attached and a Mac mini. I would like to set up user accounts to access the HD over the internet.
I have been looking into FTP options on Mac, but so far have not been able to set it up.
Can someone tell me what 'the way to go' is? Even though I am new to Apple I think you can throw some technical stuff at me. I guess I just need to be shown the right direction.
    Thanks.....

It is working as designed. If FTP access to your Mac allowed access to your whole HD that would be a HUGE security issue.
What exactly are you trying to do?

  • Software always installs to Domain Admin account on connected PC-cant install to Domain User account

I have completed the following steps:
Set up Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials successfully
Successfully connected a Windows 8.1 Pro PC to the network by running the Essentials Connector software
The PC has the following users: Original local account created when I installed Windows 8, Domain Admin account created when I ran the Essentials Connector account, Domain User created after PC was connected to the network.
Everything seems to be working fine. I have installed MS Office 365 Pro, Skype, various other applications while logged in as the Domain User. Every one of these installs triggered a UAC prompt, which was expected, and after entering the Domain Admin
credentials the install proceeded successfully. After install, the software was available to the Domain User, shortcuts appeared in the Start Menu or Desktop, appropriate directories were created in the Documents folder.
All except for 3 applications - upon being prompted for permission to install, I enter the Domain Admin credentials, installation proceeds, but the software is installed to the Domain Admin account-not the Domain User account. Shortcuts appear on the Domain
Admin desktop-Not the Domain User account, etc. I've tried:
Downloading a new copy of the software to the Domain User desktop & running it from there
    Right-click file, Install as Admin
click file, Install as a different user
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility & changing compatibility settings
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility>Run as Administrator
None of these options have changed the result, the software is still installed to the Domian Admin account as opposed to the Domain User account. Any idea why these 3 software wont install correctly but everything else has? Any suggestions as to how to install
the software to the profile that doesn't involve making the Domain User an Administrator? Thanks for any help!

    Hi voltron5,
Many programs may provide options: "install for everyone" or "just for current user", when you install them.
Please check if there are such options during the installation process.
If those three programs are all third-party applications. I suggest you should contact with the corresponding
    support and confirm this.
If those three programs are Microsoft applications, would you please let me know specific information of those
three applications? Such as their names and so on. Meanwhile, when complete the installation, please check the software path was added in administrator environment variables or system environment variables.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have set up a second iTunes user account on my PC, but when I create the new iTunes account it copies the music, videos etc from the original account and they seem to be linked.  What am I doing wrong?

I have set up a second iTunes user account on my PC, but when I create the new iTunes account it copies the music, videos etc from the original account and they seem to be linked, so that when I delete a song from one library it deletes from the other one.
On the online tutorials I've seen it shows that when you create a new iTunes library it should open as a blank account, but that isn't happening.
    What am I doing wrong?

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
    If necessary:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    or
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X

  • Can two user accounts of one computer use two different Mac ID accounts?  I'd like to keep separate accounts for movies, music etc.

I have a Mac Air running 10.8.5, with two users on it.  I'd like to keep separate Apple store accounts accounts for the two users, as we have separate music, movies, books etc.  To date, we've had separate computers, but now will share the one computer.  But when the second account is signed in and we try to sign in to the I-tunes store, or authorise the computer with the second account, the response is "the I-Tunes store is not available" or "we cannot fulfil your request at this time".  Togetherness is nice, but I'd prefer to have some privacy.

    Hi Harrike2000,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an iTunes Store connection issue in one of the user accounts on your MacBook Air, and you want to know if the issue is related to using multiple Apple IDs or user accounts.
You can use multiple user accounts and Apple IDs with one computer, see this article for more information:
How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer - Apple Support
For the issue connecting to the iTunes Store, try the suggestions in the article linked below.
Can't connect to the iTunes Store - Apple Support
    Troubleshoot issues on a Mac
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store, a software conflict or your Internet service provider (ISP) may be blocking your access.
Update iTunes and Safari to the latest version.
If you have a firewall, your settings may be preventing you from connecting to the iTunes Store. Follow these steps to configure your firewall.
You may need to reset your keychain. Connection issues are occasionally caused by keychain issues. Learn how to use Keychain First Aid to resolve any issues with your keychain.
If you're receiving a specific error message, follow these steps.
If the issue still persists, contact your Internet service provider and confirm that these ports and servers are enabled over your network.
    Learn more
If the steps above didn't resolve your issue, be sure that your specific alert isn't listed as a possible iTunes Store error. Then, if your issue is still unresolved, follow these steps.
    Cheers,

  • Does all user accounts load the same drivers, plugins etc?

    Hi
Most of what I do on my Mac can be divided into "Music" and "Office-stuff".
    1. I want to create two user accounts so my system loads faster and is more stable because it only loads what it needs for the specific task. (And to avoid conflicts with drivers, plugins, settings etc. for the audio software with the drivers etc. for the officephotoshop+wirelessmenu bar stuff.) My question is: will creating two users help me? Or will both user accounts still load all the same stuff in the background?
    2. And how do I even install programs that only run on one user? It seems that all my programs are available for all users. And moving them around after installation as someone suggested to me sounds a little unsafe.
I wish for the two user accounts to share Firefox and bookmarks and I can't do that if I create disk partitions, right?
Thanks a lot guys. I hope you have some thoughts on this.
    Jakob

From your description and configuration you posted of having a single iMac TM backs up all of the accounts.

My wife and I have separate have separate user accounts on our IMac.  We have separate Apple IDs for iTunes.  How can we use iCloud on our separate iPhones without sharing contacts, calendars, etc.

If have separate iCloud accounts and want to keep your all your iCloud data separate, you can create separate user accounts for each of you, then sign into your individual iCloud account within your user account.
If you want to just add both iCloud calendars on your Mac, you can sign into one iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud, then add the second account in System Preferences>Internet Accounts>iCloud and only check Calendars with this second account.

  • Understanding user accounts, administrators, volumes, permissions, etc.

I'm totally flummoxed by the variations and differentiations of users, accounts, short names, long names, volumes, etc. A lot of this happened as we now have 3 macs, in addition to external drives on one G5. I feel like I'm a newbie asking these questions, even though I've been a Mac user since '88.
    1. On the individual machine, in the default finder window I see, in one case, "<My Name>s' Computer." When I got a MBP, I wasn't thinking and set it up as well as "<My Name>'s Computer." When I network between the two through browsing, the MBP was renamed "<My Name>'s Computer(2). How can I change the name of one computer so that I don't have this confusion? I foolishly renamed a user and just learned that doesn't solve the problem and creates other problems.
    2. Also, is that name "<My Name>'s Computer" the "long name?" When I created the new user problem, I still see a user "<myname>" all lower-case, no spaces. Is that the short name? And, the directory under Users now includes a "<myname>" with only a few folders of recent docs. Was that created when I renamed that user?
    3. On the G5, I have 2 user accounts, mine & my wife's. My account is also the admin account. However, I find that if I'm logged in as myself (admin) and I want to look at all of her folders, I'm locked out. Even if I try to Get Info and change the read/write permissions, sometimes I still can't access those folders. (I'll add that she doesn't know beans about permissions and we have a nice, open relationship!)
    4. Should there be an admin account with superuser rights on all machines? Is it okay if there's a user who is also admin?
    5. When I browse for another machine, I see "<My Name>'s Computer" but then when I connect to that machine and I log in as one of the registered users for that machine, I see volumes, which can lead to users, but locks me out of those user's files.
    6. I see some help on these boards through postings which link to Technical Articles, but is there any good online resource or book recommended? Of course, the technical articles have links, but they are not sequenced, so they have no context. Mac Help is not terribly detailed.

renaming the drive with disk utility should work.
    2. Also, is that name "<My Name>'s Computer" the "long name?" When I created the new user problem, I still see a user "<myname>" all lower-case, no spaces. Is that the short name? yes, thatt's the shortname

Only the root user can view the contents of another user's account.
    4. Should there be an admin account with superuser rights on all machines? Is it okay if there's a user who is also admin?
yes, you can have multiple admins. you need at least one admin on each machine (unless you're running a server environment.
    5. When I browse for another machine, I see "<My Name>'s Computer" but then when I connect to that machine and I log in as one of the registered users for that machine, I see volumes, which can lead to users, but locks me out of those user's files.
    refer to root user comment.

  • New user account not remembering my appearance dock etc.

I had problems with a user account
I set up a test account and whenever I log in to this account my dock, desktop, icon & window position, window appearance, revert to the apple default.
What do I do to get MY appearance and my dock to do what I want it to look like?
Also maybe related is Safari will not remember my home page my bookmarks etc.
Firefox will not run at all on the new user account but will on the old one otherwise I'd be using it.

Ah! When you said whenever I log in to this account my dock, desktop, icon & window position, window appearance, revert to the apple default., I read that as you expected the new account to mimic the one which created it.
In that case, yes, something is certainly wrong. An account should remember any changes you'd made to it. At least an Administrator or Standard account should. Which leads me to ask, what kind of account did you create? From the help files:
Managed with Parental Controls: These accounts have limited privileges that are managed using Parental Controls preferences.
Sharing Only: Sharing only users can access shared files in a specified location, but can’t change files on the computer or log in using the login window.
Not sure how limited a Managed account would be, but the Sharing Only account does describe your issue. Any changes you made would not be allowed to be permanent as files can't be changed. Which would also be why FireFox wouldn't run. No setup or initial preference files would be allowed to be written to disk. Same with Acrobat and others.

  • I have recently transferred data from my old PC to my new Mac Book Pro (Mavericks OS). Each transfer creates a new User account (titled 'Owner', 'Owner 1', etc).  I want to merge the files from these transfers into my main user account.  Help?

I have recently transferred data from my old PC to my new Mac Book Pro (Mavericks OS). Each transfer creates a new User account (titled 'Owner', 'Owner 1', etc).  I want to merge / consolidate the files from these newly created User accounts into my main user account.  Is there a tutorial for this process, or any tips?  Anyone?

Four transfers.  After the initial attempt with Migration Assistant failed (after hours and hours of wifi transfer) I did "mini-transfers" of more manageable, smaller bits of files -- my music in one, photos in another, etc.  Since posting my question in this forum, i contacted Apple support, chatted with Angela, and she suggested getting an ethernet-USB adapter for my mac, connecting my external drive with ethernet and transferring files manually -- that is, NOT using the Migration Assistant at all.  She sent me this link to help:  Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files to your Mac.  I appreciate your response, tho', Csound1!

If the alternate user account is an admin account and login works correctly, then it appears that there's a conflict or corruption within the main account. If the alternate user account isn't an admin account, create a new admin account. While logged into the appropriate admin account, backup the main account's folder, delete the main account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the main account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated main account. If it boots normally, then the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.
See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4703015 for more details on this process.

  • Brand new user account, same old name

I've been having some quirky behavior with the main account on my Powerbook. Most recently I purchased and installed Speed Download, only to find that it unexpectedly quits after just a few minutes of an FTP download. I can run it in a new account without incident. Reinstalling does not solve this problem.
But this is just the most recent issue, there is a lot of other strange behavior that I'd like to try solving with a new user account before I go ahead with a re-install of the OS. But I don't want trouble with permissions, etc. so my plan is this:
    1) Backup old user account (let's call it ABC).
    2) Create new admin account called XYZ.
    3) Log into XYZ and delete ABC account
    4) Rename XYZ back to ABC
    5) Rebuild ABC from the backup, being careful to only import Library items I really need (like the Mail.app data) and let the rest be created from scratch.
The idea is that the user name will be the same, so there will be no permission issues. The contents of the Users/ABC/Library directory will be mostly new and uncluttered except for those items that I hand-pick from the backup.
Please only comment on this migration plan, I don't need help with Speed Download. This particular issue is only the straw that broke the camel's back, there is a lot of other quirky behavior that I am eager to get sorted out as well.
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Ian,
I'm not sure if this will work.
The Mac OS (like all unix OS) is saving a user ID which is a number stored in the system, changing the name of the user will not help because your ID will be different than the old ID.
One thing I can think about is if you have another Mac you can use the migration assistant to move your data to it and back after deleting the old account.
One other option will be to delete your account without deletion of the files (files are stored under deleted users directory), create a new one and copy all needed data to the new account.
    I hope this helps you,
    Ziv

  • How do I move all files from one user account into another on my Mac?

So I am a new Mac owner (MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.4) so I don't know about a lot of the tricks and settings I can use yet.
I just used the Migration Assistant last night to transfer files from my old laptop onto my Mac, but I've already been using the Mac for just over a week meaning I have a user account with all my preferences set, music added to iTunes, photos added, bookmarks, etc. The transfer last night created a whole new user account for all of the files from my old laptop, rather than importing them into the account I've been using. Just wondering if there is a quick and easy way to somehow merge these user account into one, or something similar. Hope I explained properly!

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/ as the path, drag one account's home folder to the other's desktop, and move the items inside it to the desired locations.
