FX5200 slowdown in games

Everything seems to be going OK then I get one game (Midnight Club 2) which causes no end of problems.  In the game, the graphics pulse (slow down, then speed up) and becomes unplayable.  Whenever smoke or flame effects turn up it goes down to a crawl.  Hey, I want to play a game not watch a series of screenshots.  At this rate my old banging 3Ti would have been better...

I've tried using the MSI Clock utility to overclock and no improvement.  It's now running at the default settings.
Are there any settings in the BIOS which may be required to improve performance?  Is there any possibility that upping the AGP voltage may help?
And why does the Driver Cleaner link send me to a religious page.  I know that most people often need god's help with GFX cards but surely He's not giving tech support on them now?

As far as most games go it's fine.  It's just on MC2 with all the details turned down it seems to rollercoaster for no reason.  It can happen with the minimal amount of stuff on the screen.  I could understand if this happened on other games (with the details to the max) but it doesn't.
As for it being a "low end" card it means that I have been mis-represented by MSI themselves.  "Power and performance, the two elements every gamer craves, are the heart and soul of the GeForce FX" it says on the box.  If this is the case and it won't even RUN a game that came out a MONTH after the card then will MSI be refunding me my money??  I doubt that any MSI emplyee reads this so they probably won't answer.  If this is the case, it means that I have a lump of PCB with a few components on it that won't even be any use in two months.  Betcha the software supplier won't refund my money either.  Everybody shaking their heads and saying it's not their fault.  Hell hath no fury like a OneEye sold dodgy equipment.  Watch yer inbox MSI....

  • Dealing with slowdown in game performance?

    So, I'm running into a pretty tough roadblock trying to develop a game for the iphone 4/ipad.  The best comparison to what i'm working on would probably be Plants vs. Zombies. My road bock is I can't get more than 10 enemy's on screen bofore i get some major slow down. 2.7 update helped a little, but not enough to really get the preformance I need.
    My game resolution is 960x640.  All objects on screen are raster (png) based. I'm rendering in GPU mode.  The average 'enemy' object is aprox 60x100 pixels and about ten frames of animation.  I'm not using any blending modes, and no .alpha property changes. No tweening.  I've basically pulled out all the major code at one point or aonther, and just tested having a large number (say 14) of the enemy objects (animated movie clips) on the screen (and viewed the resulting slow down). I'm also object pooling just about everything.
    I have seen games push WAYYY more in terms of how much they have going on on-screen, so I'm wondering if this is one of the limitations of the Flash engine?  I can only guess that I'm just running out of memory?
    Any thoughts or insight on people running into similar issues (and hopefully some solutions) would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -dis

    Sure, this is what I did- and there may be a more efficient way, but here ya go:
    Lets say your trying to animate an enemy walk cycle.
    in your Enemy movie clip you want to put all your individual images that will be used in the animation on frame 1 of the time line.  They can be on multiple layers just make sure there is only one frame on the time line.  Also make sure each image is aligned properly on top of one another (actually index sorting order wont matter).
    Each image of the animation should be a symobl and posses a unique instance name (so we can access it via code).  In my case I just labled teh frames 'f1' f2' 'f3' and so on.
    So, somewhere in your code (probably in that Enemy movie clip's class)  you want to create an array storing each image (f1,f2,f3,f4, etc).
    Then, in a onEnterFrame event (or timer loop) you'll loop that array setting the images visibility to true or false depending on what you want displayed.
    sample code:
    package
         import flash.display.MovieClip;
         import flash.events.Event;
         public class enemyMC extends MovieClip
              private var cFrame:int;
              private var aArray:Array= new Array();
              public function enemyMC()
                        cFrame = 1;
                        initFrameArray();
                        addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, anim,false,0,true);
              private function initFrameArray()
                   aArray[0] = f1;
                   aArray[1] = f2;
                   aArray[2] = f3;
                   aArray[3] = f4;
                   aArray[4] = f5;
                   aArray[5] = f6;
                   aArray[6] = f7;
                   aArray[7] = f8;
                   aArray[8] = f9;
                   aArray[9] = f10;
                   aArray[10] = f11;
                   aArray[11] = f12;
                   aArray[12] = f13;
                   aArray[13] = f14;
                   aArray[14] = f15;
                   aArray[15] = f16;
                   aArray[16] = f17;
                   aArray[17] = f18;
                   aArray[18] = f19;
                   aArray[19] = f20;
              private function anim(event:Event):void
                   for each (var item in aArray)
                        if (item == this["f"+cFrame])
                             item.visible = true;
                        else
                             item.visible = false;
                   cFrame++;
                   if (cFrame>aArray.length)
                        cFrame = 1;

  • Mega 651 with 7600gs graphic problem...

    after some research in the forum i finally decided to get myself upgrade for gigabyte 7600gs agp and 1 gb ddr pc3200(2x512mb elixir pair match)...
    here is the problem comes... the card work flawless in window (even in windows vista RC2 with AERO)... but when come to gaming, it starts giving Visual artifacts after few minutes of game loads (every game that i had, HL2, warhammer 40k, NFS:MW... start off fine but only for 1~2 mins before the game crashes) , i never had any problem with my old FX5200 with these games.
    my PSU was fsp250-60ms (replacement of  my original 1), and as far as i know 7600gs consume less power than 6600gt so i assume the power requirement isn't the issue... to proof that, i even connect the card with a spare PSU i had externally and the problem remains. i even disable AGP fast write and increase AGP appreture to 256 in bios option... memory CAS is set to 2.5T
    please i need help....

    thanks for the fast reply guys...
    to Stu: i would do if i could, unfortunately most of my friend owns laptops, even those with desktop they uses PCI-e, they keep teasing me about my upgrade now...
    to Kane81: i have a blower sitting beside the card and when i do the test i take the case off... i had my pc on for hours (watching movies, some office work etc) without problem...
    i browse through Nvidia forum and found that there is some compatibility issue between SIS base board with 6600gt agp (artifacts, ramdom crashes... similiar to my case)... thus i tried the methods provided by them (upgrading agp driver, disable fastwrite etc) and still doesn't help...
    any other have experiance like this before with  6600gt in their megapc series? if do, how would you solve this matter... ur experiance might be valuable to me... please help....
    p/s: i got my card (brand New) from ebay (i check the box, is never been open, never been used before when i receive it), is there anyway to contact gigabyte about the warranty issue?

  • Graphics upgrade on k9n2 diamond

    hi i upgraded my board and cpu recently, i feel my ageing 8800gtx is now the weakest part, getting some slowdown on games not a lot but it's noticable, i also have a 2 games i would like to play at full settings on my 24" monitor.
    i set the pc up with 2 gtx 260 which seemed good but they have returned to their home now. leaving the gtx
    problems i have is the gtx260's just fit in my case, the gtx will only fit in the top slot (the gtx260 is about half and inch shorter)
    so im limited (don't make me change the case!) to a card of 10.5 inches. whats working well? if it worth sli? or should i just get a 280 gtx in the top slot (assuming it's longer than the 260)
    any advice? it's gonna cost me so i want to get it right, i have heard the ati cards are a good buy but im guessing i cant do cross fire?
    many thanks

    morning thats an option i hadnt concidered, and didnt know i could do, the ati card seems the best value, in games forums they seem to be very well recieved, in this case the gtx has to go in the top slot though, would this still be possible?
    i was thinking 2 gtx260, but i had vista since it was longhorn and the 8800 was one of the first out (and expensive) so i have had plenty of vista /nvidia er joy. to be honest untill a year ago the card, was far from it's full potential and only seems to have reached it, with drivers etc when they pull the damn card, will i have the same 'joy' with the new model, i wonder!

  • FX5200 games problem

    first of all, sorry for creating another "FX5200 problem" topic, but i've read the latest ones and im not sure they've got the same problem...
    i've just bought a GeForce FX5200 T128. i installed the card and everything, and even downloaded the lastest driver from MSI's site (44.039x)... but most of my games are not even running (that's right they don't even start), apparently a rendering problem as it says on "TRON 2.0 DEMO" and "Morrowind"... and they were working just fine on my previous card (GF2 MX400)
    my system is a Athlon XP1700, ASUS A7S333, 256DDR266
    running windows 98 SE

    Good that I found somebody who has a similar problem. You guys on this forum are really good and maybe my last hope.
    I have an IWILL K266 mobo with AMD Athlon 1GHz
    Processor with VIA chipset. I have the latest BIOS for
    the motherboard. I have a couple of issues:
    1. Any 3D game does not run. It either exits silently after the intro video(Starfleet command) or with an error (Ghost Recon)or
    with a popup note saying "Cannot open Display Mode"
    (Trophy Demo), or does not even start (IL sturmovik demo).
    2. Old Game called Freespace-2 cannot find the
    accelerator card
    3. When I look at the MSI Information Tab under the
    Display, I see that the AGP Enable box and AGP4x box is not set. If I try to
    set them, it does not allow me to do this. My motherboard
    supports AGP4x/2x and its BIOS is set to AGP4x.
    4. Setting the Motherboard BIOS to AGP2x does not
    help.
    5. dxdiag works fine except some MIDI audio test.
    6. I am appending the modified system info. that MSI Live generates. Note that it says the card is “Offline”!! What does this mean?
    I have the latest BIOS for the mobo and DirectX9.0b driver and the latest Nvidia drivers provided via MSI Live Utility(MSI drivers don’t work either). The ONLY thing that I do not have is the latest VGA BIOS from MSI. But then, I don’t want to upgrade that until someone tells me that it will solve the problem.
    I noted a long thread about a problem similar to mine but affecting the FX5900 cards. However, they have the same problem when running at AGP8X and it works if they move to AGP4X. I tried setting the mobo BIOS to AGP2x but it does not help.
    I tried setting the “AGP Driving Value” in my BIOS to EA and E7(Default was DA) with no effect.
    Based on another forum thread, I tried to find if there was a Registry entry named “4XAGP” but I could not find any such entry in my local registry.
    Can someone please help me before I decide that this card is a pure POS and RMA it back to Amazon before 30 days are over.

  • Major slowdown when playing backgammon on Yahoo Games

    Around the 3rd game I play everything slows to a crawl, getting gradually slower until I am forced to quit the game. I am using Firefox as my browser, haven't tried this on Safari, if that makes a difference. Help will be greatly appreciated.

    2 GB is a very small amount to be honest. If it's a mid 2009 machine you can upgrade it to 4, 6 or 8 GB. If you want to know where it all is going look at the Activity Monitor that will tell you exactly how much each application is using. You can upgrade to 4 GB for about $110. I would recommend visiting:

  • Game Music Slowdown

    Hi, I'm making a 2D platformer and I added a thread (with the lowest priority) that will play midi files. The game now runs noticeably slower (it used to use roughly 2 -10% of my 1.73 gHz CPU, now with midi music it now uses about 40-75%)
    I've also tried this with .ogg and .mp3 files and they all have the same problem
    Here is the thread class I'm using:
    public class MusicThread extends Thread
         public MusicThread(String filename)
              super(filename);
         public void run()
                            try
                              Sequencer seqr = MidiSystem.getSequencer();
                              Sequence seq = MidiSystem.getSequence(new File(this.getName()));
                              seqr.open();
                              seqr.setSequence(seq);
                              seqr.start();
                            catch(Exception ex)
                             ex.printStackTrace();
    } does anyone know how I can improve the performance?

    The way that a thread's run method works is that it doesn't execute the run method over and over again, it simply executes the run method until it returns.(At least I think this is the way it works) But, I moved everything but the "seqr.start()" call to the constructor and it still runs slowly.
    Also, when the music thread or the game are run in separate progams, each has a very minimal CPU usage (2-10%). But when they're run in the same application, they eat up resources.

  • When playing games on the ipad I have no sound and it it very slow.

    when playing games downloaded from the app store I have no sound and the games arte very slow?

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
    If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
    You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • I can't get my Game to work...

    I bought The Sims 2 for my MAC OS X but it says I need 1 MB to play - I have that, it says I need to free space from my local disc but I don't know how to find it!! Please help!!

    Hmmmm. Not sure what you mean by it needing "1MB to play" -- unfortunately, that doesn't correspond to any of the specs on the game's web page:
    http://www.aspyr.com/product/game_specs/6
    Here's what it says it needs:
    Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later
    CPU Processor: PowerPC G4/G5
    CPU Speed: 1.2GHz or faster
    Memory: 256 MB or higher
    Hard Disk Space: 3GB free disk space
    Video Card (ATI): Radeon 9000 or better
    Video Card (NVidia): GeForce FX5200 or better
    Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
    Media Required: DVD Drive
    You do mention that it says it needs to free up space on your local disk. Have you tried deleting other games that you don't play any more? They're often the biggest resource hogs on a hard disk drive. Even demos nowadays can take up over 1GB when uncompressed! Another good place to look would be iMovie video projects, especially those that you've finished with and exported to DVD.
    Good luck!

    Chucky,
    My crystal ball is still in the shop for repairs and without it, I cannot quite make out the hardware in your comp. Please list your Hardware, OS and specs on your Power Supply.
    Take Care,

  • System Slowdown

    I've been running Arch Linux for the past month or so and thur far it's the best distro I've tried. I love the package management system and the simple way configuration is handled... however, in the past week I've noticed that my system no longer has that pep that it once had. The only program added to the system has been Enemy Territory (great game btw) using the standard installer. Now everything seems much slower. Also, the translucent selection rectangle in GNOME crawls across the screen while dragging and I've taken ~300fps hit in glxgears for no reason. I'm using the ATI 3.14.6 drivers with Xorg 6.7. I haven't updated Xorg because the offical ATI drivers don't yet support 6.8. Does anyone know what could be causing this slowdown?
    .: Current Setup :.
    Arch Linux (current) w/ custom 2.6.9 kernel
    Athlon XP 1800+
    Epox 8RDA+ nForce2 Mobo
    768MB DDR Dual Channel
    80GB Seagate IDE w/ 8MB cache
    Radeon 8500 128MB
    Just a note: I've been using this kernel for some time and haven't had any problems until I installed ET. And according to my CPU monitor the usage is 1-2% idle and almost maxed out while playing ET.

    I'll try that out later. ATI is supposed to have a new driver release this month that supports Xorg 6.8 so I could use the open source drivers until they release the new offical ones.
    I feel like my entire system and not just video has taken a performance hit. Thanks!

  • Who do i speak to about an issue with shockwave. it is running my cpu at 100%. when i play Zynga games on FB. don't remember giving permission for storage or cloud.

    a couple of weeks ago i noticed a real slowdown when playing Zynga games on FB. opened task manager (XP) and saw plugin-container.exe running at 400,000+ k. ran search thru windows and found plugin-container for mozzila. checked and updated all plugins but issue persists. disabled each plugin seperately while playing, with task manager open and disabling shockwave was the only one that had effect on plugin running. unfortunately this also crashed the game. know its not your plugin but any advice or directions would be appreciated. ( my husband's solution is the simplest of course but i really enjoy my games!) Thanks for your time.

  • Video and game performance Satellite P100-434

    I got myself a nice new P100-434 just 2 weeks ago, When tring to play a game or a DVD It starts of ok but after a short time the frame rate drops right of then comes back up then back down..
    I took it back to the shop and they gave me a new one but the same thing happens.
    Anyone else had noticed the same. If so tell me how to handle with it.

    I've had the exact same problem for a number of weeks, exchanged for a new one (identical notebook) and I still have the problem. I've even tried to get it fixed but to no avail. The guy I took it to seemed to think it had something to do with the DVD drive but to me it looks like a power supply issue. I put the videocard slider down to "balanced" and the problem essentially goes away, no more random bouts of extreme slowdown. However, this forces me to play at far lower settings that what I could originally achieve without lowering the power. (but suffering the said bouts of extreme slowdown)
    The difference here is that i'm running XP and still get the problem. Anyone know what causes this? I'd like to actually be able to use my videocard at its full potential.
