G4 MDD kernel panic diagnosis
Hi,
I have a single cpu 1.25ghz MDD G4. This machine has been having some kernel panic problems that seem to be very much tied to sustained heavy CPU load. It will run for days on end doing simple tasks with occasional high CPU processes. If I start doing something intensive (like encoding a big batch of audio files) it will certainly crash after some time.
I thought maybe this was tied to temperature somehow so I've been monitoring the cpu temp. It does seem to never panic when the temp is between 25 and 40 C, but when it gets to the mid 40s it is only a matter of time. This doesn't seem hot enough to me to be a problem. I reapplied some thermal paste to the CPU and made sure the heat sink was seated well, with no improvement. The main fan and the PSU's fans seem to be functioning and the system is free of dust.
I'm at a loss here, but I'm definitely not an expert. Maybe this temperature issue is coincidental but it seems to truly indicate an impending panic. Could the PSU be overheating? Is this just a sign of a failing CPU?
Also, the backtrace in all of the panics is the same. What is the significance of this? Below is the system information and a couple of panic logs.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

What type of heatsink is in your machine? There is a thick finned aluminum heatsink, a thin finned AL heatsink (much better than the thick finned one) and a copper heatsink used in MDD's. Is the heatsink free from dust?
It has the thin finned aluminum heatsink and I've used an entire can of air blowing all the dust I could find out of this machine.
Does the 120mm case fan turn properly? Is it free from dust and are the blades clean? A new case fan (120mm x 38mm ≧ 88cfm) may help.
It seems to be clean and functioning, but I wonder if cpu temperature is truly the issue.
A PSU that is clogged with dust, or one that has fans that aren't performing will overheat. An overly hot PSU cannot produce reliable voltage, which will cause a system to freeze.
Use compressed air to blow out the PSU.
I will get some more canned air and try this tonight. I don't like that the PSU intakes air from inside the top of the case, either. It seems like it may be kind of warm up there.
See G4 System Reviews and Related Articles for advice on MDD cooling.
Thanks for this!

Help with kernel panic diagnosis
hi - have an ~18 month old imac 24 (2.8GHz, 2GB ram) running 10.5.8 and the power supply went bad and it was replaced about 3 weeks ago. following that, everything was working fine for about 2 weeks and then 4 days ago i started getting kernel panics - have had 5 since then. 4 of them when the mac was being used (safari, calendar, itunes) - i don't recall any specific action that triggered it, and once when it was sitting around idle.
have been thru the steps documented in the various faqs but have found no issues and it happened again today.
- extended hw test - ok
- repair disk and permissions - ok
- check for insufficient ram and disk - ok
- checked firmware versions - ok
- run all software updates - ok
latest log from today's panic is below
any idea where to go next?
thanks!

Help diagnosing kernel panic?
My MacMini (mid 2011) 2.5GHz Core i5 w 16GB or RAM running of a 240GB SSD has never givenme a moments problem. Yesterday it started frequent kernel panics. Diagnosing them is over my head. Here are excerpts from the header of the console log for all the panics. There are only subtle differences between them, different CPU, but the "offending file" is the same every time. Can anyone tell me where the problem lies? Thanks, Mark

The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.
After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced. -
10.4.4 and Kernel Panic on MDD
Hi--I updated my system to 10.4.4 (from 10.4.3) and now it kernel panics during startup. Following the hardware test, fairly quickly after the "rotating gear" appears, the system panics.
I did a fresh install on another disk in the system (using 10.4.3 installer disk) and it boots fine. Performing the 10.4.4 system update and rebooting from the new startup disk also panics exactly the same way.
Ran disk permissions and latest DiskWarrior on my regular startup disk--everything checked out ok.
I couldn't find any info in the kernel panic log...
I have a third party USB2 card in the system as well as third party RAM. System has been running flawlessly for 18 months on 10.3.x->10.4.3 and is running fine on a rolled-back 10.4.3 install.
Has anybody else had this experience with booting 10.4.4 on an MDD G4 system?
Mac OS X (10.4.4)
G4/MDD/1.25OK, I think I found the problem--it seems that the third party USB card installed in the system doesn't work with 10.4.4 (it is fine with 10.4.3). Removing the card allows the system to boot.
The card doesn't have a lot of info in System Profiler:
USB Bus:
Host Controller Location: Expansion Slot
Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBOHCI
PCI Device ID: 0x0035
PCI Revision ID: 0x0043
PCI Vendor ID: 0x1033
Bus Number: 0x13
It doesn't matter if any usb devices are connected to card, the system panics under 10.4.4 with this card.

Mountain Lion - endless kernel panics - can anyone diagnose?
Been having issues with Kernel Panics since Mountain Lion came out. I downloaded and installed a few months ago and got Kernel panics, so I formatted and sent to apple and they replaced the RAM, which did absolutely nothing. So I went backwards to Snow Leopard, and then recently came back now that we're on 10.8.2 to use Mountain Lion and I am still getting kernel panics. Can anyone diagnose where I could begin as far as removing software, etc, from this kernel panic? I'm pretty comp savvy but the kernel panic appears an endless stream of nonsense to me:
PS: You will notice in this kernel panic I have some FireWire audio interface connected. Just to be clear, this kernel panic can come with or without any periphreals plugged in

Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (Crash Log)
Hey guys. So i'm on a quest to diagnose kernel panics. Here's some background.
Just did a full zero/and reinstall on this MBP SR 2.2 ghz.
Also, just had RAM and logic board replaced from old kernel panics.
Installed updates/repaired permissions
Vacuum Mail automation seems to be blocked (anyway to stop this?)
I use my mbox to play audio form my computer (through my monitors)
when i unplug the mbox the computer switches to internal speakers.
It says something about the mbox and io drivers in the log, but i don't know how to read them all.
shoudl also be noted that i use webkit nightlys and safari 3 (seen in log)
also, iTunes tends to hang often (meaning i have to reset to get it to open again becaus force quit wont do the job) any thing on that also?
so here is the console log, after this past crash (5 minutes ago)

can anyone enlighten me? please help. Thank you.
Message was edited by: products7074740Since my last post 45 days ago I had not a single issue with a program hanging anymore. What I did is to set the standard device for audio playback from the USB Digidesign MBox2 (Core Audio Driver 7.3) back to the Apple Mac Pro Internal LineOut.
I am so happy to finally have a stably running Mac. This is worth a lot.
I am not sure if our problems are really the same.
I don't see any "logs" folder in system/library. And what do you mean by crash ? A complete system halt ? For me it was only individual programs getting the spinning ball of death.
So it seems this issue of programs hanging to death and afterwards the computer not even able to quit the process for shutting down was indeed caused by the Digidesign Core Audio Driver. I must say I am really disappointed with Digidesign software. I have also encountered major bugs in Pro Tools LE 7.1.1, which was the Software bundled with my MBox2. There is one bug where it can happen that after saving and reopening your session, many of the region arrangements are messed up or truncated.
I dont think it is a bad idea to be a little conservative with new features, if this allows your software to be more stable for production. But Digidesign is both: conservative and buggy. Now even with the sound driver, who messes deeply with the system.
I am very disappointed. I bought Logic Studio now. Hope that this will finally make me happy .
Before I figured this out, I had already ordered another set of RAM and HDD. So now when those items arrive, I will have an unreasonable amount of RAM and HDD. However, I am sure it will turn out to be useful really soon.
I am thinking about getting Leopard (OSX 10.5) when it gets released, especially because of the Time Machine Backup Solution. I wonder if I can use my MBox2 there together with Logic Studio 8. Does anyone know, if the MBox2 runs under Leopard already (just curious if it runs at all, don't care about Digidesign approved ... which doesn't seem to mean much).

It's used by many other softwares so I have no idea what installed it.
If you have a clue, then go around and update all your programs, if the machine fails to boot, just hold the Shift key down during boot for Safe Mode to disable it.
You also can do a #8 Reinstall Just OS X, that will bump it out of OS X, make sure to Software Update fully afterwards.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure your software is compatible with your OS X version before reinstalling them. -
MDD Dual 1.0GHz Power-up chime, NO BOOT or video after Kernel Panic
My MDD DP 1.0 (FW400) suffered a recent kernel panic on startup, and since then it has failed to boot...
It chimes and the power light stays on, fans run, but seems not to access the hard drive, and or power the DVD drives, USB/keyboard, or Video.
I Can't reach her via ARD either.
I have tried:
Reset PMU Power cord in.
Reset PMU Power cord out
Replaced the Battery,
Left battery out for 48hrs
Started up holding X key
Started up holding Space bar
etc. etc.
Any ideas? I really don't to loose this trusty old server.
Other details.

HenrikWith care, you can manually open the optical drive tray. Pull open the outer door and use a good light to look at the front face of the drive beneath the hinged door. Somewhere there is a small hole, often under the tray, just slightly larger than a large paper clip's wire diameter.
Partially straighten a large paper clip and GENTLY insert the wire STRAIGHT into the hole. You should feel resistance after about 1/4 inch. Apply a little more pressure and the tray will start to move out. Grab it with your fingers and gently extend it all the way. I had to do this when I had the boot problems I mentioned.
Once you insert the System CD/DVD, push the tray closed and try to start, this time holding down the "C" key on your keyboard to force the computer to start from the optical drive.
BTW, be sure to check all internal cables for secure connections. As you're not even getting a gray screen, I'm getting a little concerned that your power supply has taken the long trail. When my MDD did the boot craziness, I at least got a gray screen. -
Please help diagnose kernel panics
I'm having intermittent kernel panics on an Intel iMac (10.4.8). When they happen, it is always after a hotsync to a Palm Treo 680. I have never installed the Palm software, only MissingSync from MarkSpace. The sync looks like it's succeeded. MissingSync says it was fine, and the Treo has gone back to its normal hotsync screen. But just as that happens the panic occurs (sometimes). My guess is that it's when the Treo disconnects from the USB port. It's connected directly to a port on the back of the iMac. MarkSpace support had nothing obvious to suggest, other than uninstall, reset PRAM, repair disk, reinstall blah, blah. Can't see how this would help.
Anyone know if the Treo needs a USB driver as such, that would presumably be supplied by Macos or MissingSync? The panic report follows. Any pointers gratefully accepted!

As for the Treo I have no specific information on any incompatibilities with OS X when used with the proper software. If you use Missing Sync from MarkSpace just be sure you are using the most current version and that you don't also have Palm Desktop software installed as well. There is nothing specific in the panic.log file that points to The Missing Sync software directly, only that the panic was generated in one or more of the USB extensions.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics for more information.
I use Missing Sync with a Palm Tungsten E and it works fine on all my machines.
Do you use any other USB devices and/or USB hubs?
There are many possible causes of kernel panics. Corrupted device drivers and hardware defects are common causes. As I suggested before you would be wise to follow the suggestions given you by MarkSpace support. -
Persisting kernel panic on my eMac, can't diagnose the problem.
Believe it or not, I still own an old 2005 eMac. It's still a good piece of kit for ******* around on and I'd like to get a little more mileage out of it. My problem is every time I turn it on I get kernel panic. If I let the computer sit for a few months, it operates several minutes longer without incurring kernel panic. If I turn it back on an hour later, kernel panic occurs rather quickly. I've had some other problems too after it was suggested that I re-align the RAM: I got a fleshing light and no startup which I diagnosed to be something wrong with the RAM. A couple days later I started it up again and got a no-entry symbol instead of a grey apple symbol. A couple weeks after that I safe booted up fine and got a few minutes of use out of it before kernel panic hit again. My question is should I replace the RAM? Or it something much worse like a hard drive issue?
Hi, have you blown the dust out of it lately?
Do you know which exact Model it is?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

Kernel Panic G4 D1.25 MDD - Maximum Hard Drive Capacity/Accessibility??
In solving my Kernel Panic from September 2, 2008 post I have been running "Panic Free" for a number of days.
I added a Firewire/eSATA/USB2 Nexstar external drive case w/WD Black 1 TB Drive) and I get a Kernel Panic instantly! It happens with Firewire and eSATA both.
I am running 4 x 500 GB IDE WD Caviar drives internally and what I want to know is there a "Maximum Hard Drive" amount that a G4 MDD can access at one time??
Is there a maximum of 2 TB of drive storage it can access or ??No. It is likely the Nexstar's firmware is not compatible with the bus being used. See my FAQ*:
http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
The Firewire bus as long as its power draw is not over its specs, will handle up to 63 devices in a chain. The secret of course is for every Firewire device to have its own power source separate of the computer, and the chain not to be too long. That chain is defined more clearly here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewire
USB has a theoretical maximum of 127 devices.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB
I've found the most reliable Firewire hard drive cases come from http://www.macsales.com/

Can anyone help my diagnose what is causing this kernel panic?
Tried to learn how to read these from a website, but no luck. Could someone smarter than me figure this out? It's happening weekly. Thanks!

Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related
Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
thought it might be RAM.
ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
thank you.
(this from another new snow leopard install)

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

This is an indication that you are not using the latest version of Tunnelblick and/or you are not using the latest version of OpenVPN that Tunnelblick contains, or you are setting OpenVPN to specifically use the "tun" device. Recent (for the last year or so) versions of Tunnelblick use OS X's built-in "utun" device (available since OS X 10.6.8) instead of the add-on "tun" device.
If you are using an older version of Tunnelblick*, I urge you to update to the latest beta version, which includes important security updates and, depending on what old version you have, kext updates. You can use Tunnelbick's built-in updater (on the "Preferences" panel of the "VPN Details… window") or you can download it from Tunnelbick's Downloads page. If you download, be sure to install by double-clicking as directed – do not drag it to the Applications folder.
Before you do so, please note the current version you are using. If the update causes problems (unlikely), you can reinstall that old version (after downloading it from Tunnelblick's Security Risk Downloads page). To see what version of Tunnelblick you are using, click the "Info" panel at the top of Tunnelblick's "VPN Details… window".
* You will not be able to update Tunnelblick if you have a "Deployed" version – see the note about that on Tunnelbick's Downloads page. -

The internal microphone can't be found?
Yesterday evening my iBook G3 with OSX 10.3.4 crashed (don't ask me how).. anyway, now the internal microphone can't be found. In the sound settings it just says "no sound input device found". Does anyone know what to do about it?
