This may have nothing to do with the panic, but I noticed that the net.tunnelblick.tun kext is loaded. This is an indication that you are not using the latest version of Tunnelblick and/or you are not using the latest version of OpenVPN that Tunnelblick contains, or you are setting OpenVPN to specifically use the "tun" device. Recent (for the last year or so) versions of Tunnelblick use OS X's built-in "utun" device (available since OS X 10.6.8) instead of the add-on "tun" device.
If you are using an older version of Tunnelblick*, I urge you to update to the latest beta version, which includes important security updates and, depending on what old version you have, kext updates. You can use Tunnelbick's built-in updater (on the "Preferences" panel of the "VPN Details… window") or you can download it from Tunnelbick's Downloads page. If you download, be sure to install by double-clicking as directed – do not drag it to the Applications folder.
Before you do so, please note the current version you are using. If the update causes problems (unlikely), you can reinstall that old version (after downloading it from Tunnelblick's Security Risk Downloads page). To see what version of Tunnelblick you are using, click the "Info" panel at the top of Tunnelblick's "VPN Details… window".
* You will not be able to update Tunnelblick if you have a "Deployed" version – see the note about that on Tunnelbick's Downloads page.

Please help diagnose kernel panics
I'm having intermittent kernel panics on an Intel iMac (10.4.8). When they happen, it is always after a hotsync to a Palm Treo 680. I have never installed the Palm software, only MissingSync from MarkSpace. The sync looks like it's succeeded. MissingSync says it was fine, and the Treo has gone back to its normal hotsync screen. But just as that happens the panic occurs (sometimes). My guess is that it's when the Treo disconnects from the USB port. It's connected directly to a port on the back of the iMac. MarkSpace support had nothing obvious to suggest, other than uninstall, reset PRAM, repair disk, reinstall blah, blah. Can't see how this would help.
Anyone know if the Treo needs a USB driver as such, that would presumably be supplied by Macos or MissingSync? The panic report follows. Any pointers gratefully accepted!

USB Device: IR Receiver, Apple Computer, Inc., Up to 12 Mb/sec, 500 mAAll modern USB devices rely upon standard device drivers included with the operating system. OS X has built-in USB device drivers. However, not all USB devices are necessarily compliant.
As for the Treo I have no specific information on any incompatibilities with OS X when used with the proper software. If you use Missing Sync from MarkSpace just be sure you are using the most current version and that you don't also have Palm Desktop software installed as well. There is nothing specific in the panic.log file that points to The Missing Sync software directly, only that the panic was generated in one or more of the USB extensions.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics for more information.
I use Missing Sync with a Palm Tungsten E and it works fine on all my machines.
Do you use any other USB devices and/or USB hubs?
There are many possible causes of kernel panics. Corrupted device drivers and hardware defects are common causes. As I suggested before you would be wise to follow the suggestions given you by MarkSpace support. -
Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (Crash Log)
Hey guys. So i'm on a quest to diagnose kernel panics. Here's some background.
Just did a full zero/and reinstall on this MBP SR 2.2 ghz.
Also, just had RAM and logic board replaced from old kernel panics.
Installed updates/repaired permissions
Vacuum Mail automation seems to be blocked (anyway to stop this?)
I use my mbox to play audio form my computer (through my monitors)
when i unplug the mbox the computer switches to internal speakers.
It says something about the mbox and io drivers in the log, but i don't know how to read them all.
shoudl also be noted that i use webkit nightlys and safari 3 (seen in log)
also, iTunes tends to hang often (meaning i have to reset to get it to open again becaus force quit wont do the job) any thing on that also?
so here is the console log, after this past crash (5 minutes ago)

can anyone enlighten me? please help. Thank you.
Message was edited by: products7074740Since my last post 45 days ago I had not a single issue with a program hanging anymore. What I did is to set the standard device for audio playback from the USB Digidesign MBox2 (Core Audio Driver 7.3) back to the Apple Mac Pro Internal LineOut.
I am so happy to finally have a stably running Mac. This is worth a lot.
I am not sure if our problems are really the same.
I don't see any "logs" folder in system/library. And what do you mean by crash ? A complete system halt ? For me it was only individual programs getting the spinning ball of death.
So it seems this issue of programs hanging to death and afterwards the computer not even able to quit the process for shutting down was indeed caused by the Digidesign Core Audio Driver. I must say I am really disappointed with Digidesign software. I have also encountered major bugs in Pro Tools LE 7.1.1, which was the Software bundled with my MBox2. There is one bug where it can happen that after saving and reopening your session, many of the region arrangements are messed up or truncated.
I dont think it is a bad idea to be a little conservative with new features, if this allows your software to be more stable for production. But Digidesign is both: conservative and buggy. Now even with the sound driver, who messes deeply with the system.
I am very disappointed. I bought Logic Studio now. Hope that this will finally make me happy .
Before I figured this out, I had already ordered another set of RAM and HDD. So now when those items arrive, I will have an unreasonable amount of RAM and HDD. However, I am sure it will turn out to be useful really soon.
I am thinking about getting Leopard (OSX 10.5) when it gets released, especially because of the Time Machine Backup Solution. I wonder if I can use my MBox2 there together with Logic Studio 8. Does anyone know, if the MBox2 runs under Leopard already (just curious if it runs at all, don't care about Digidesign approved ... which doesn't seem to mean much).

Hi, I have had several kernel panics recently. It seems to only happen when I'm playing World of Warcraft during a very graphic intensive situation. I ran Hardware Test and it said everything was fine. My computer also occasionally just freezes without a kernel panic. I can move the cursor around, but I can't switch between applications nor can I use the current application.
Here is the kernel panic error:

Help diagnosing kernel panic?
My MacMini (mid 2011) 2.5GHz Core i5 w 16GB or RAM running of a 240GB SSD has never givenme a moments problem. Yesterday it started frequent kernel panics. Diagnosing them is over my head. Here are excerpts from the header of the console log for all the panics. There are only subtle differences between them, different CPU, but the "offending file" is the same every time. Can anyone tell me where the problem lies? Thanks, Mark

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: backupdThe Time Machine backup data on the network device is corrupt. The first thing you should do, if that's your only backup, is to make another complete backup to a locally attached storage device. One backup is never enough to be safe. Network backups are less reliable than local ones.
After that, hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
If you continue to get panics, erase the backup device. With an AirPort device, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the Time Machine preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.
If you still have problems after erasing the device, it should be replaced. -
Need help troubleshooting Kernel panics
Hi,
I have had two Kernel Panics in two days just now, and another one a few weeks ago. The logs don't help me as I am not familiar with the wording on the Mac side, and I cannot submit the error reports to Apple as it fails, probably because I run 10.5.8 and Apple discontinued suppoort for Leopard or something like that. I would need help trying to figure out from the error message whether it is likely hardware, software, network, etc.
Here are the tope lines of the recent Kernel panic logs:

The last two kernel panics happened just as I hit "send" in Thunderbird, so it may be related. I fail to understand how such a simple command would crash a computer though. -
Help Diagnosing Kernel Panics (MBP 8,2 on ML)
Hello all,
I'm hoping you can help me resolve these kernel panics on my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. They occur regardless of whether or not there is any external hardware attached, so we probably can rule that out straight away. In fact, they primarily seem to occur when I use Safari. The last two kernel panics I encountered happened while I was inputting data into a text field. The system froze for about a second, then the screen went black, and then after rebooting itself I was treated to the "your computer restarted because of a problem" screen. The computer then started up normally and was perfectly functional until I tried using Safari again, some 35 minutes later. I got some usable time in the browser and then, once again, poof.
I've been using Chrome since (my default browser) with zero kernel panics. I use three extensions with Safari: AdBlock, LastPass, and Coda Notes.
I've captured the last two crash reports (from the kernel panics described above) and they're included below.

I've run a check with Rember on my RAM (although I only had time for a single run) and all tests passed successfully.
Thoughts? That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault
An obscure bug in OS X
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it as directed in this support article.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Need help interpreting Kernel Panic Log for MBP w/ Retina Display
So, I keep getting kernel panics on my new MBP w/ Retina Display. I'm not quite sure how to interpret the log, so I would appreciate your help . I just want to confirm that this is an issue w/ Google Chrome and not something else?

Bad or incompatible RAM is the most common cause of KP's. It could just need to be reset…… to make sure there's a good connection.
Here's a great site for Resolving Kernel Panics. Please do all the steps in order, even if you don't think you need to do a certain step.
Here's a great MacFixIt article.

Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related
Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
thought it might be RAM.
ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
thank you.

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then disable these, reenable one at time to determine which. If KP, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember. See

Need help with Kernel Panic, ATIRadeonX2000
I have an iMac 27" (Late 2009) running OS 10.7.4 and the graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB. The problem is lately I'll come to the machine and it'll just freeze after a short period of use. Can't interact with anything, it's just a static screen. I can put the system to sleep by pressing the power button once (and it takes longer than normal to go to sleep), but when I wake it, as soon as the display comes on, kernel panic. This has just started and happened I'd say 4 times in the past week. I did recently have a failing HD replaced at an Apple Store.
Is there anything I can run to test the graphics card hardware? I ran AHT (not the extended test) from my original install discs and everything checked out okay. When at the Apple Store I remember the Genuis holding down D (Option-D?) when booting and going into this modern looking diagnostic tool. I couldn't figure out what it was or how to do it and restored to AHT on disc. Maybe it was removed on reinstall of the OS or downloaded/installed at the store. Thoughts?

Need help with Kernel Panic because of Intel Graphics Driver???
Hi,
I was using my mini mac has usual and it crashed! It seems to be related to the intel driver. Dont think I updated recently, although little snitch demo license did seem to run out just before it happened.
At first I could even log into to safe mode, but after several single user mode disk checking I seemed to be able to login through safe mode. Unfortunatley I cant role back, even if this was successful, through my timecapsule because I foolishly(Dont most people do this???) repartitioned my HD and lost my hidden recovery partition.
Anyway, I was thinking that if I can login through safe mode could I copy the driver that it is using to my normal bootup mode??? I have included my kernel panix below. Hope someone can help?

Ok. That sounds like a good idea. I do have an image stored on my time capsule. The problem is I can see it whn in safe mode!!! I know the capsule is working correctly because I can see it from another mac.
There is an application called 'restore from time machine...' Can I run this from safe mode??? Tried downloading the restore from usb app but this says that it cant install because the partition was removed!!! How can I use my time capsule to restore to this image???
You need another drive to boot from and this is why I suggested using a directly connected External HD instead of the Time Capsule, plus then you will still have the Time Capsule to fall back on for your data...
pbhacker wrote:
Looks like it was the NEW memory!!! Although I do have a problem...
1. First, I tried the old memory(2 x1GB). That seemed to work.
2. Then I tried the NEW memory again(2 x 4GB). Crashed like it has done in the past.
3. Then I tried the new and old memory(1GB + 4GB). Booted but then crashed when I logged in.
4. Finally tried one new memory stick(4GB). That seems to be working ok.
So, the question is it the NEW memory or is the mac? How can I test this? I guess I cant use the ATH application because there is no memory in that slot?
Any ideas?
You need to reinstall 10.7.4 somewhere so that you have a Restore Partition to work from.

Help needed in interpreting panic log from kernel panic error
My G4 iBook has started giving me kernel panic errors, often immediately after starting up. I haven't installed any new software or RAM recently. I've done a clean system install (completely clean - not an archive and install) then downloaded the combo update for 10.4.11. But the kernel panics are still happening from time to time. I've looked at the panic log, but it means nothing to me, so I'm hoping someone can help:

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html
Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.
