G5 Dual 1.8ghz sleep problem

Hello all,
This is my first mac and ive had it about 4 months now with no problems, but i have since started to get problems when putting it to sleep.
It shuts down but then immediately starts back up when the screen goes off. I've checked all the screensaver options and energy saver options but cannot see anything that would make it restart.
I have disconnected the network to see if that makes any difference and also finally re-installed the OS X which i updated to Tiger 10.4.3 and that didnt help
I found an article with regards to resetting a PMU / SMU and tried that but again no go.
I also found an article explaining to delete a file from the library>preferences>.com.apple.powermanagement.plist, but again nothing doing.
There are no additional items attached to the machine. Just an Apple display and keyboard and mouse.
Is there anything else that i can do to try and get rid of this as my g5 sleeps every night when i do but wakes up prematurely?

Thanks for the response.
The strange thing is that when i was typing out the initial post, I made sure that the problem with the network was accurate by disconnecting the network and putting to sleep. It woke straight back up again, but once i had finished the post i tried it again and it went down. And stayed down. I have tried it again a few times since and each time successful.
I didnt change any settings and had nothing else connected to the g5, USB or otherwise.
I am also like an addict to the software updates and so check nearly everytime i start it up maybe 2 - 3 times a day, which is why the sleep mode is important to me.
Anyhow i just hope that it is ok from now on. Once again thanks for the reply.

  • Dual 2.3 Power Mac G5 sleeping problem

For sometime now my G5 has had a sleeping problem. I use evetv 500 to record tv shows. Most times I have been on the computer say 5 to 6 pm. I'll have it set to record at 7. The G5 will start up and record no problem, but the monitor will not go back to sleep, the whole system is almost locked up . I have found that the computer clock will be stuck at the time I let it sleep. If I move the mouse the clock will update, and the system will sleep.
    Thanks for any help
    Dual 2.3 G5 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
I've experienced something similar a bit now and then. The most recent occurense of this was just a few minutes ago. Last thursday (june 21st), I set my Mac to record one show at 21.00 and one recording at 18.00 (every weekday on the 18.00 one), both recordings are one hour each. The ordinary "sleep when idle" function doesnt seem to work properly but I still set it at 15 minutes plus a scheduled sleep at 22.08. Now when just I came home the Mac was on though it shouldnt be. iStat in Dashboard gave me these figures:
    Uptime 0d 4h 22min, up since 8.35 june 21
The only reaction I got when I tried to check the sleepsettings was a message telling me that the computer was scheduled to go to sleep in 9mins 55sec's and the System Preferences panel just bounced in the dock, every app that I tried to start just bounced in the dock. When I tried to restart it I got a message, after a while, telling me that Eyetv was keeping my Mac from going to sleep and trying to force quit it didn't seem to make much change. I finally turned the Mac off by pressing the powerbutton on the front.
I got the 18.00 recording on thursday but not on friday and no 21.00 recording from thursday. I thought the scheduled sleep would override the other setting...

  • Dual Quad Core - wake from sleep problems

I have a brand new Quad core 2.8 ATI Radeon, and have experienced both wake from sleep problems within the first week of ownership, more than once. Namely, restart on wake, and/or corrupt graphics-frozen on wake. I haven't called AppleCare, but my question is is it worth it? Is it thought to be a software problem, or a hardware issue? I don't want to go to a lot of trouble if any replacement exhibits the same problem (or worse), but at the same time I feel it is a real issue and should be dealt with under guarantee. What should I do? Suggestions please...

There's lots of anecdotal data in the forum here and elsewhere, but the bottom line so far is that nobody knows except perhaps the Apple folks that are working on it.
No one that I've seen posting has identified even a common thread...some machines have the reboot from sleep problem, some have graphics issues, some have both (I'm in the first camp...reboot from wake but no (touch wood) graphic issues.
It wouldn't hurt to call Apple and get your issues on record; it helps them know the extent of the problem.
Your warranty is for a year so it's not immediate, especially since there doesn't seem to be a lasting fix available. Resetting SMC and/or PRAM works for some...for a while...
Right now I'm simply not sleeping the machine (I don't normally do it anyway) and waiting for Apple to come out with a fix. My bet is on a software/firmware fix (there are reports that the problem does not happen in bootcamp/windows, which more or less rules out hardware). But that's a sort of educated guess.
People have returned the machine only to get the same...or worse. Again, I'm not rushing into that.

  • G5 Dual 1.8Ghz -randomly very NOISY & FAST fan!

Hi I couldn't find a post for this elsewhere!
1 or 2 times a week my G5 dual 1.8Ghz fan will begin to speed up and become incredibly fast and noisy, when this happens it doesn't slow back down, it keeps going!
Once this begins I am often unable to shutdown or restart the computer and I have to resort to pressing the power button.
On restarting the fan is normal again, but it always happens again at some point.
This happens while the computer is 'awake', but might have happened from sleep once or twice (I can't remember).
    Many thanks for your help,
    Colin
    G5 dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2gb RAM

Hello Colin and welcome to the Apple forums.
This is what we call a "Kernal Panic" and basically the OS stops responding, also to hardware which slows down the fans from the default "turbo" mode your experiencing.
What could be causing this requires a careful process of elimination.
Disconnecting all other external hardware except a wired mouse, keyboard and one monitor is the first step.
Next is to backup all data, c boot from the G5 Tiger (not upgrade over Panther disk!) and Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option your boot drive. Reinstall Tiger fresh and immediatly Software update until clear. Install only vital apps from original sources and cd's (avoid those that alter your sytem/ use a admin password to install), files and data from backup. Update your drives driver software from the makers sites for Tiger.
If these two methods don't resolve the problem, then you should try installing a new boot drive (Zero it first) and repeating the step above to eliminate a bad boot drive.
Once these three steps are done and you still have problems, it could be a RAM or defective video card or other major hardware problem.

  • Power Mac G4 sleep problem

    Hello!
My G4 (mdd) won't go to sleep anymore. Neither on its own via energy saver nor when you press the power button or select sleep in the apple menu. Does anyone know what to do?
I already unplugged my USB devices, didn't help. Then I trashed my energy saver and bluetooth preferences and reset PRAM by pressing <commandoption+PR> at startup, no luck. I read all the previous posts about this issue and did everything they said, but it didn't help.
maybe someone has an additional suggestion.
    Thank you!
    David
Power Mac G4 (mdd) 867 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.3.9 combo update. Others here would use the one for their version.
    Cheers!

  • No CD-RW burning on pre July 2004 dual 1.8GHz G5?

    Hi!
After 2.5 years of using this G5 I recently tried burning an audio CD on a blank audio dedicated CD-RW disc and noticed that the drive doesn't recognize this as a blank disc. I tried two different brands from iTunes and Toast. The drive has so far burned dozens if not hundreds of DVDs and CDs without a single problem. Could it be that the built in drive of this model doesn't recognize Rewritables at all?
    dual G5 1.8GHz

Not likely... My parents have the Dual 1.8GHz model (September 2003) and it burns rewritables just fine.
I'd say the more likely case is that your drive may have failed, especially if you've burned hundreds of discs.
First thing I'd try though is a CD/DVD lens cleaner. There may be a lot of dust inside the drive, or on the lens.

  • Dual 1.8GHz 2GB RAM not gonna run iMovie '08?

    Hello all,
I have heard that despite what the requirements for iMovie '08 are, it will run on a dual 1.8GHz Power Mac G5 (I swear I read that a fellow PMG5 1.8GHz user was doing it...with if memory serves, 3GB of RAM.) But do I really need 3GB of RAM? I wanna max this bad boy out but I dont have the money to do so at the moment. However its beyond me as to why it installed without a single problem. It even says it requires a dual 2.0GHz. But I just popped the iLife '08 DVD in the Mac and it installed everything on the DVD no questions asked. What I find a bit weird is I went to a friends house (he has a PMG5 Single 1.6GHz 4GB RAM) it wouldnt install. Ok so maybe his specs were too low. =( but this thing is super fast. (Im running Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard hes still running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger (I sold him my 10.4.6 DVD when I bought my 10.5.6 DVD) And we have blazing fast machines. Esp his! I wonder why his is faster...is Tiger really THAT MUCH older?
    Regards

    Hi-
RAM isn't as much of an issue as processor speed.
iLife 08 will install on most any machine, even G4's, but the ability to use iMovie successfully requires more CPU, thus the 2.0GHz stated in the system requirements.
Anyhow, it wouldn't be the first time a machine with lower than recommended CPU speed installed iMovie 08:
    http://tom.goskar.com/2007/09/03/imovie-08-on-a-18ghz-single-processor-g5/
    Some ineteresting discussion here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=338836
Only 512MB of RAM is necessary, but Apple recommends 1GB.
However, RAM becomes necessary when manipulating large files.
2GB is really as low as one should go..... and more is better with graphics and video related work.
The 3GB issue is not RAM, but hard drive space.
The software suite simply requires that much space on the hard drive.
Tiger is faster than Leopard on most all PPC machines.
Leopard has its sweet spots, but uses more RAM, CPU and graphics card than Tiger.
This may explain why a slower machine "feels" faster.

  • Is there much difference btwn dual 1.8ghz and dual 2.0ghz

    Hi,
I have seen a dual 1.8ghz (M9454LL/A) second hand with this spec:
    Machine Type: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac 7,3
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)
    Number of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed 1.8GHz
    L2 cache (per CPU): 512KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus speed: 900MHz
    Graphics Card: GeForce FX 5200
ATA Bus (DVD): Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D
    Serial-ATA (hard-drive): Maxtor 80GB
for a good price around £800 which would leave me with money to buy a monitor.
This model already has airport built in and additional ram added.
I am a music producer (running digidesign protools LE) and need a studio computer to see me through the next couple of years. I have been looking at getting a dual 2.0ghz machine but these are invariably more expensive and I would have to pay to add the features this model already has, as well as purchasing a flatscreen.
Basically I want to know how much of a performance difference i will see between a dual 1.8ghz machine and a dual 2.0ghz machine.
    cheers guys

Ok that dual 1.8 is not much difference from a dual 2
Your dual 1.8 has a 900 Mhz front-side bus per processor
The dual 2 has 400 more Mhz total in CPU speed (not much really) and a 1000 Mhz frontside bus per processor.
    So the difference is minimal.
You could upgrade that video card to a AGP ATI X800 and 3D game all the latest ones with no problem. (I would before they are all gone)
If you get yourself another internal hard drive, something large like a 250-300GB SATA and keep your user files in there instead of on the 80GB Maxtor, your performance "feel" would be pretty good as well. (no Western Digital, they upgraded their SATA specs)
And you got a Superdrive, so you can burn dvds.
If time doesn't equal money, and your not constantly pushing your CPU's day and night, this machine is a good buy IMO. You should get a good 3-4 years out of it, especially if you know when to stop upgrading the OS/apps.
Yes I say you got yourself a good buy there.

When I have the $$ and after CS5 is released (Hopefully in 64bit) I am going to build a new computer... this will be for SD only, and I will NOT overclock the Asus motherboard and I do not need Raid... as much as possible, I am buying when Newegg has free shipping on the item I want (I am going to buy the CPU & Ram & MB last, just before I start building, in case there is a problem and I need to return anything)
If I were going to edit HD video, I would replace the single 1-T drive with a RAID setup for faster I/O - but, since I've never had any I/O problems with a single data drive on my old computer, I see no reason for raid on this computer
It should work, but if Win2k and the Pinnacle Dv500 I have won't work with this new motherboard, I will buy an ADVC-300 external device $400 at http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Grass+Valley/ADVC+Digital+Video+Converters/7039 31 to work with my old analog camcorder (plus old VHS tapes I am slowly converting to DVD)

  • Powerbook sleep problem

I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

  • Apple Mac Pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core

    Hey guys,
Ive got a real brain teaser. I have a apple mac pro 2008 dual 2.8ghz quad core that wont boot.
The leds on the memory test good its all tested in another mac and working well.
The 9 leds are reading as follows 2nd led lit yellow. Led 9,8,7 Green- which from my research is good.
Ive also reset the cmos battery and vram, nothing.
Pulled the memory and video card and re-seated them also nothing.
The last thing i tryed was shut the computer down sit for 30 seconds then held alt and got the install mac os screen not a hard drive option.
Which leads me to think its not seeing the hard drive?
    Any suggestions?

    Starts up with fans
    Makes the apple chime
The chime is generated in software when the first portion of the power-on self test has passed.Your Mac is working and has enough working RAM memory to start up.
You still may have problems with drives, the software on those drives, or your graphics card.
    apple logo comes up
The dark gray Apple is loaded by the ROM boot loader in the first blob of software (before the file system is initialized). Its presence indicates your Mac can get some stuff off a Hard Drive, and seeing it indicates your graphic card can display something in a primitive way.
with spinning gear and just sits there for hours
It is stuck booting up something. Verbose Mode (hold Command-V at startup) will show you the parade of messages. The last five will tell you what happened.

  • Possible reason for the iMac G5 with 10.4.3 Sleep Problems

Ok first off let me say that I got this new iMac G5 20" about 4 days ago. It's wonderful. If anyone out there is holding out for the intel machines, don't wait, get a G5. It's a fantastic machine. Now on to the meat of the subject. The story goes like this; I hooked up my Plextor PVR with eyeTV to my iMac to see how well it would do (been using it with a P4 Windoze XP machine and my iBook G4 14" with no problems). It worked just great. No problems with the iMac, the PVR or any of my other addons (including the boatload of software I migrated over from the iBook). So I set up EyeTV to record some stuff while I was asleep. It's supposed to wake up the Mac, record the shows then the Mac goes back to sleep. Easy huh? Well the wakeup, record part went just fine but the Mac wouldn't go back to sleep. Perplexed (actually thrilled, this is where I have my most fun with new machines, figuring out why they aren't working correctly) I did all the standard "I can't get my Mac to sleep automatically" things. You know, blow away all the plist files that have anything to do with powermanagement and autowake, reset NVRAM from OF, reset the PRAM (3 times just like the old days), reset the SMU, blow away all the Bluetooth plist files, etc, etc. Did them all, don't suggest any, I did them all I swear, really. I've been through this kind of thing before. One big difference with this iMac. Nothing and I mean nothing would work to fix the problem. The only way the bad boy would sleep is by hitting the Power button for a second or selecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Hmmmm. Spent the better part of a morning reading every thread here about peoples problems like mine. One post and I mean exactly one had something I hadn't tried. I rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down while it boots until you get the login screen with the red text "Safe Mode".) I forgot that OSX even did that. Logged in as myself (normal login but still in safe mode) and low and behold the thing would sleep automatically! I repeated this (boot in normal mode, boot in safe mode) many times. Every single time the Mac would sleep from safe mode but not from normal mode. Tells me it's software not hardware. In each mode I run "Activity Monitor" and save a list of the running processes to a text file. Now compare them and shutdown each process that is different one at a time. To make this story somewhat shorter (heh) I finally found that I could consistantly make the machine sleep or not sleep by killing the "mdimport" process and restarting it. This has to do with Spotlight. To be exact, it's the process that imports Metadata into Spotlights data list (I'm no expert, have a basic understanding of this). So on a hunch I ran the terminal and entered the command to delete then rebuild Spotlights databases, "mdutil -E /". Then I let Spotlight rebuild that databases and rebooted. Guess what? The iMac sleeps perfectly now, go figure. I did this once so far and the Mac has been working correctly now for about 5 hours. I've got a feeling that the problem will come back. Especially if it's an inherent problem in Spotlight and the 10.4.3 upgrade. I don't seem to have this problem with 10.4 or earlier. Long post I know but I thought it could help someone out. Please post any comments. I'd like to know if what I did is coincidence (I really don't think so since I reproduced it many times) or not.

    iBook G4 1Gig, iMac G5 2.1 Gig, iMac 266   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iMac 266 running 10.3.6, been using Macs since the '80s

Right guy's i to have researched this problem
concerning my auto sleep problem.I started off by
following Joeaux's original post by safe
booting, noting what was running in the activity
monitor, booting normaly and again noting what was
running now.I eliminated the same processes that were
running from both boots, and then started quiting one
by one, the extra processes, from the normal boot, in
activity monitor.Once you quit a process, allow the
computer to try to go to sleep i.e set energy saver
to 1minute and wait to see what happens.I tried the "
mdimport"as of Joeaux but this was not my problem. In
my case the sleep problem was down to two
    applications called N67U_ButtonManager and
N124U_ButtonManager.These are for use with my Canon
scanner.I also noted that if i left the scanner
connected to the computer this would also stop it
going to sleep, even after deleting the two
    applications.Hope this helps!
Thank you now i know that those login items are for my scanner, and not logic audio i am a little less angry(Logic is now an apple application but the version I run was from the emagic days and i presumed that the button managers were from this app as it was the oldest bit of software running on my machine) By the way any apps that may cause a problem like this are more than likely simply residing in your user login items and can be disabled from there permanently as far as i can see.

  • 15" AL PB G4 Sleep Problems

Another in the long list of sleep problems. Running the latest & greatest Tiger and all that. I have read and read and READ! the discussions and followed most of the advise to no avail. Here's what's up.
When I try to put the PB to sleep, either by closing the lid or through apple menu, everything starts out ok. Screen goes dark, LED comes on, Great! At the moment when the LED becomes brightest, the Superdrive makes a noise like it is cycling, and the PB wakes up. If I leave the lid closed it continues this indefinitely. If the lid is up, it wakes and the srceen flashes from desktop to black a couple of times the seems ok.
When I open the lid after experiencing this behavior I can hear the machine wake, but screen stays black. Must turn off by holding down power button, then start up again and all is fine.
Any one else experiencing this drive cycling?

Another in the long list of sleep problems. Running the latest & greatest Tiger and all that. I have read and read and READ! the discussions and followed most of the advise to no avail. Here's what's up.
When I try to put the PB to sleep, either by closing the lid or through apple menu, everything starts out ok. Screen goes dark, LED comes on, Great! • Unresponsive Keyboard and Trackpad problem AT STARTUP + Sleep problem

When I turn on my computer it boots the OS and everything works except for the trackpad and the keyboard. I wait for about 5-7 minutes and then the trackpad and the keyboard start working.
    Additional problems:
If I try to sleep my computer, the screen turns off, but the computer never stops working, so I have to force it to shut down.
    Temporal Solutions
    1) Boot in safe mode, it solves the trackpad/keyboard problems but not the Sleeping problem
    Attempted fixes
    1) Conencted external keyboard mouse/keyboard. Doesn't work
    2) Reset the battery controller.
    3) Reinstalled 10.6
    4) Installed 10.5
    5) Installed 10.6.3
    Known Stuff:
    1) The trackpad/keyboard are always connected as I can move the mouse and use some gestures with the Better Touch Tool app, and the keyboard works because if I click the Caps Lock key, the small led turns on.
    2) Also, I have the HardwareGrowler app which tells me if hardware gets connected or disconnected and it never tells me anything about the trackpad/keyboard getting disconnected.
    3) The OS is working at startup because apps show stuff and get updated and I can still get growl notifications.
NOTE: This is an intermittent problem, about 1 out of 10 times I turn on the computer I GET the problem.
    Thanks a lot!

I came across a similar issue as the original poster. My trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive for 5 - 7 minutes after startup. I've updated my OS to 10.6.4 twice and it's still happening. I recognized this behavior after the Preferences->Network pane froze while I was trying to remove a VPN setting. Removing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfigurations did not help the problem.
Do any of you have advice on debugging the issue?

  • Leopard sleep problem which seems related to Entourage 2008...

    Hi all,
I have a MBP (3,1) running 10.5.2 and I noticed about 3 months ago that if I left the lid open the energy saver triggered sleep wouldn't kick in (very hot laptop next morning syndrome).
I've read a number of other threads on Leopard auto-sleep problems (which pointed to the HP AIO frameworks) but this doesn't appear to be the same issue I have...
If I quit Entourage 2008 then the computer will sleep after the correct period of time - and that's with no other changes to my normal use. Of course I'd like to not have to worry about quitting Entourage each time I might, maybe, just possibly not be back at the computer for a while.
Now in the system log I do keep getting the following strange entries:
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Entourage[914]: Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
I have no idea what this really does and I do appear to have such a file in the system called X509Anchors...
If I switch Entourage to Offline mode then the entries don't appear in the system log anymore but... the unit still won't sleep. It requires Entourage not to be running it seems.
Having not seen anything else on the discussions forum relating to Entourage 2008 preventing auto-sleep I'm beginning to wonder whether it's just me?!?
Anyone else seeing this effect? And most importantly, does anyone know of a fix?
I have tried the NMS sleep utility stuff and although it worked perfectly whilst I was testing it using Energy saver timings of 1 minute... as soon as I upped the time back to my usual 30 minutes for CPU sleep it failed to work again.
    Any help much appreciated.

Ok two things based on the crash report and the steps you took right before the crash:
    # Try to disable scrolling acceleration and restart Firefox. Does it continue to crash?
    # Try Safe Mode and do the same task as above with email and the pdf [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
    # Also pdf.js may be helpful to read pdfs in the meantime. You can change the default reader in the Preferences/Options > Application menu of Firefox.
    # Try to clear out the downloads folder and update flash to version 14 (that should do it)
IF it crashes again please also provide the new crash signatures and we can take a look :-) Sorry for the crashing :-(
