G5 Tiger problems

My brother has a G5 1.8 single processor running Tiger 10.4.11 on both his primary and backup drives. Recently he's had lots of problems that we just cannot explain.
Recently he tried to install the latest Security update on the primary drive and the installing quit saying it could not be installed. But it went into the spinning ball and would not restart. He started up on the backup drive and after running Techtool Pro twice to make repairs he got the primary drive to boot.
We checked software update but the Security update was not shown but Safari was. So he tried to install Safari but it told him he could not install it because he needed 10.4.11 installed and that's what he has running.
So he checked Software update on the backup drive but there was not Security update shown. So we downloaded it from the web site and tried to installed but it said there was a problem and could not be installed.
Two months ago he lost the primary drive system and we had to erase the drive and reinstall everything and do all the updates. He could not remember all the details as to why or how this problem happened.
I've run Macs for 25 years and cannot figure out what's going on. Can someone help please.
Your help would be appreciated,
Rookie

He erased both hard drives using Disk Utility so I do not know if that zeros out data.
TTP repairs volume and file data. Some how that got the primary drive so it would start up again.
How can the Apple web site say he has to have 10.4.11 installed to install Safari 3.2.3 when he has that running on both drives? that somehow is a clue to what's going on but I don't know what. when he erased both drives a few months ago he installed Tiger and then did the combined upgrade to 10.4.11. Apple upgrades don't recognize he's running 10.4.11 on both drives.
This machine is 4 or 5 years old. Would a weak clock battery cause this kind of issue?
Thanks,
Rookie

  • Help! Snow Leopard install (from Tiger) problems, Email, Printer, internet connections, etc.

Hi late, but done I just installed Snow Leopard, in hopes of all being better, like SL's ablity to send attachments as "Windows Friendly", better apps, etc.
Well, right away, after installing SL, iLife, & iWork there are problems! I also did the Updates right after.
First, my Address book was totally BLANK - including birthdays of grandkids, used in Birthday Widget! This despite that in Mail, "Previous Recipents" shows those ones "in my address book" & those not in it. But when I click on those I want in my email box ... they're not there, even my daughters!
Q - SO, how do I get this data back in, other than making new cards & groups ... already done in Tiger?
Also, I tried to send an attachment, Windows friendly" box was checked, but saw somewhere I have to "contact" my server? Why? (Verizon, which hates Apple, & caused many other problems since I got this!)
Second, my Printer, though shown as the default (Epson CX 6000) fails to print ... though all is connected properly. When I try to look for tutorials, etc on line, Safari bumped me from one negligible page to another, none of which I was looking for. Then when asking for "immediate tech help" I was disconnected, because Safari showed I wasn't connected to the net!!!
Third, How come the new Safari dosn't have a box where I can type in a URL to go to? seems awful weird!
Fourth, System Preferences, in Tiger too, unlocks various item pages, though I've locked them? also weird.
I'm off to the Apple store tomorrow, but IF anyone can help with any of these now ... you'd be an angel!

If you did not repair permissions and restarted your computer after the installations do so now.
Check Epson's driver download website.  You probably need to update the drivers to work in Snow Leopard.  Please post back the results.

  • Can't load Tiger - Problem with hard drive or other?  What to do next?

I would like some advice on installing Tiger on an IMac PowerPC G4 (700 MHZ machine). This machine has 512 MB SDRAM. The machine is currently running Mac OS 10.3.9. Thus far I have been unable to install Tiger.
The machine is 5 years old and was run in Classic OS 9 for several years. There have been no material problems since upgrading to 10.3.9 several years ago.
I have been Installing with Archive. The install does 100% of the Checking Installation DVD but very soon after entering the Preparing for Installation/Verifying Destination Volume (the task bar has only filled about 5%) it kicks out of the install saying that there were errors in installing the software. No further information is provided.
I have disconnected all external devices and run the Tiger disk utilities. I receive the message that an “Invalid catalog record type” has been encountered and that “Volume Check has failed.”
“Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit”
    “1 HFS volume checked”
“1 volume could not be repaired due to error”
At this time, I do not know what steps to take next.
Should I get a stronger utility program to try to mend the hard drive?
Should I conclude that the Tiger update is not feasible given the age of my machine?
I don’t have an external drive to load everything off of the iMac to do an Erase and Install. I am reluctant to do this anyway in case this will not fix the above issue?
Any advice would be most welcome.
    700 Mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thank you for your reply.
I found the article you sent me to so fascinating with the pictures.
Sad to say, that this is completely beyond me from a mechanical and personal dexterity perspective. I actually only knew what two items were in the tools required list. I think I could only get through two steps: set imac on soft surface (but not wool blanket) and take the bottom off.
Therefore, I think the next step is to go to the Mac store with my problem description and the imac and see what they can do.
Based on reading the article, I think I should also have more memory installed if in fact, they are going to take the bottom off at the Apple store. Would you agree?
Alternatively, it occurs to me to simply keep using the imac in 10.3.9 and save for a new laptop since I'm now running wireless network and it would be fun to have another laptop accessible around the house. Or maybe save for a new desktop...
    Any thoughts?

  • Upgrading from panther to tiger problems

Hi i recently purchased Tiger discs from ebay to upgrade my panther system. As most applications now need 10.4 or about (including the new ipods which i have just found out after buying one). Now I have a g4 1.67 ghz powerbook and when i boot it with the install disc in it i get a kernel panic about how the disc has been formatted only for macbook and cannot be used on a power book. I wish i knew this before i bought the discs.. i plan on upgrading to leopard soon anyway but for now, is there anyway around my problem with the macbook install discs and trying to install them on an older power book?
    cheers

No. They will not work ever. MacBooks have a totally different architecture. You bought what is called a machine specific disk; meant to install on only the model it shipped with. It came with a MacBook and will only install on that exact model.
See if you can send it back. E-Bay has alot of machine specific disks for sale. That is why most of us here don't recomend buying OS software on E-Bay.
The Retail disk is black in color. PriceGrabber.com lists one for sale for at Amazon.com.

  • Reverting to tiger problem

So I installed Leopard, but this being a G5 it didnt run so well as I would have hoped it would. I ended up having all sorts of problems with the new OS, so I opted to use the system discs to revert back to Tiger. The re install went OK (there really needs to be a hard CD tray eject button ) but now that im in tiger, i cant get system preferences to launch. I click it, and an icon STARTS to come up, then goes away. No error message or problem, just goes away. This is obviously a problem. Im hoping this is an easy fix. Can someone help me get this fixed?
    Thanks.

Hi David, & a warm welcome to the discussions!
(there really needs to be a hard CD tray eject button
Oh man... a pet peeve of mine for years... what a crazy deal!
Generally that "Bounce" means you need to use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • Endless Tiger problems -- now it's privileges

When I first installed Tiger I had problems using my hardware - iDVD would crash or fail to finish burning, I couldn't output Final Cut Pro movies to my deck, etc. An Apple representative suggested to reinstall Tiger as another user, which I did. Now I'm still having the same problems (just to burn a DVD now, I have to restart under OS 10.2.8, where my hardware works fine), and I can no longer save files to some of the folders that I created with my previous account.
I am the administrator (my account has Admin status) and the only user of my Mac. Yet I can't edit many of my own files that were created by earlier versions of the OS with my earlier account. How can I change permissions so that I can access my own files?
(Wishing I'd never upgraded... don't get me started on my other complaints about it...)
    Scott
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Scott,
This is all easily rectified, but I recommend that we proceed carefully. In order for the instructions I will give you to work correctly, without causing any further problems, you must be organized. All of your files must be either in your own HOME folder, or on an external/secondary volume (not somewhere "loose" on your startup disk). Is it safe to assume that this is the case?
First, let's take care of everything in your HOME folder. You mention that you are using Tiger (10.4) and Jaguar (10.2). Therein lies the problem; 10.2 and earlier used a different paradigm for the "default" group to which users belonged. This discepancy in the old and new groups to which you belong(ed) is causing the permissions problems. The short version is that you no longer belong to the same groups, so cannot always write files to directories created by your "old" user.....
    * Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. At the prompt, copy and paste the following text into the Terminal window:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R `id -u`:`id -g` /Users/`id -un`</pre>
then press <RETURN>. You will be asked for your admin password. Enter it (it will not be echoed) and again press <RETURN>. Wait for the prompt to return, then quit Terminal. This will reset the ownership and the group of your HOME folder, and its entire contents, to yourself as your current user.
Now, we will do the same for the contents of any external drives or "secondary" volumes. Open Terminal again. At the prompt, copy and paste this text into your Terminal window:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R `id -u`:`id -g`</pre>
Notice that this is simply a portion of the command we used earlier. It is missing the "path" to some directory, which before pointed to your own HOME folder (by retrieving that path from information stored in the "Netinfo Database"). This time, we will set a different path that will point to the external/secondary volume, but we will use Terminal to help us. After the text you have copied and pasted, type a space. Next, find the icon for your mounted external drive (or secondary volume) on your Desktop, and drag it to the Terminal window. Terminal will fill in the "full path" to that volume after the space you typed earlier.
Press Return. Again, you may be asked for your admin password. Enter it, then press <RETURN>. Wait for the prompt to return, then quit Terminal.
Once more, I want to caution you to not attempt this on any directories other than your own HOME folder and any directories on an external drive or secondary volume. If the problematic files and/or folders are located anywhere else on your startup disk (outside your HOME folder) there are other considerations, and other options we can and should use. If this is the case, let me know. Also, let me know where they are located, so I know the proper instructions to give.

  • Tiger problems - is the iBook the cause???

    Hello,
I have recently over the past week or so, had numerous serious problems with Tiger. It has been running extremely strangely. I've got an iBook gG4 with 256 mb RAM and 1.3Ghz processor. There have been many problems, but here are the main ones:
    - My Bluetooth mouse suddenly stopped working, and I had to delete it and then reconfigure it.
    - It sometimes doesn't go to sleep, and will just freeze on the main desktop display. This is linked to the fact that...
    - The actual desktop freezes; menus take forever to load and even when clicked on, this generally don't seem to work.
    - Spotlight stops working and takes forever trying to find an obvious file, which after 2 or 3 minutes (during which nothing else seems to work), it will say that it hasn't found the file.
    - It takes ages to shut down or startup: the rotating wheel on the white/cream background goes on forever...one time up to about 10 minutes.
    - When I started up iTunes this morning, it took ages, and then said that it was importing my media library. It then said it couldn't because the file was damaged. I then only had about five albums left there.
-The same thing happened to iPhoto, apart from the fact that it didn't give me an error message. It just says that there are no photos. I've yet to re-import the library (I don't actually know how), but all the photos are still there on the hard drive.
They are the main problems, aside from the fact that it can run extremely slowly from time to time. I've repaired permissions and run disk utility and everything seems okay there.
Any help at all would be hugely appreciated...I'm very stuck here, so thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Adam Dalton
(PS: I have posted this message in the Tiger forums, but was wondering if it was an iBook problem that anyone else had had)

Most of us in the forums feel 512mb is the minimum you should have to run Tiger correctly. I would add more then that if you can swing it.
    Cheers!

  • MDD upgrade Panther to Tiger problem

I have 2 G4 MDD running 10.3.9 I wanted to upgrade them to Tiger to run CS3. The first machine upgraded normally the second one only gets to the checking hard drive screen +/_ a bit and the message comes on the screen that I need to restart the computer. All controls are locked out and only the power button will shut it down. I tried booting from the install disc by holding the C key down but it does the same thing. I have done this several times but it won't take it! Checking the install disc is ok no fault. Thoughts?

How can you be so sure?
First off, if you don't have at least 256 MB of RAM, upgrade the RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
    According to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191?viewlocale=en_US
The only 10.4 disc that will work with any MDD is the retail one which looks like * and does not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.
If you are using the correct disc, verify the drive you have in your system is indeed a DVD drive. If it is a DVD drive, verify the clock battery has been replaced in the last 4 years.
If the clock battery has been replaced, zap the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If zapping the PRAM doesn't work, then you may have to clean the optical drive, or replace it.

  • Front Row tiger problem [only works when iTunes already open]

    Ok this has never happened before and don't know why its started to happen;
When I open up front row and go to movies, playlists or artists etc and click select, the little circling buffer symbol comes up and stays there. Nothing happens so I just have to force quit out of it.
But, if I already have iTunes open, and then open up front row, and can select and play anything from within front row.
Before I was always able to open front row without itunes already being open.
Then only thing that I thought could be contributing was that a few days ago I installed you control: tunes which is an iTunes controller that stays in the menu bar.
But even if i have this running or not, the problem with front row still persists.
I've repaired any permissions I had but still no luck.
    Any suggestions??
    running MacBook C2D 2.16GHz with OS 10.4.11
    thanks, b.

I apologise but there IS a new .plist file in ~/user/library/preferences. Still no fix though.
I'm assuming its the first link I need because the second one is for leopard.
When I try and install the .pkg I get an alert that says:
'This software update requires a Macintosh with a built in IR receiver running Mac OS X 10.4.5'. I am running 10.4.11 and my apple remote is working just fine???
I had Remote Buddy installed, thinkng that that may be causing the problem, but after uninstalling that, the problem still persists.

  • Solution for Canon ImageBrowser Tiger problem

It appears that ImageBrowser (mine was 3.x) crashes on load after I installed Tiger. My camera is Powershot G2.
I found a Canon site in Germany (?) that has version 5.5 and it works with Tiger.
You have to guess at the deutsch when downloading but when install you pick the language.
Wonder why USA Canon does not make this available?
    http://de.software.canon-europe.com/software/imagebrowser_updaters22449.asp

I have Version 3.6.0.11 and it's working fine for me, both downloading and browsing/viewing. Delete the ImageBrowser's preference file and see if it won't work then.

  • Upgrading 10.3.9 to Tiger Problem

My school has recently been donated a G4 with 10.3.9.  I'm trying to install a retail version of Leopard, but I seem to have a problem.  After instering theDVD and restarting, my computer simply hangs.  I get nothing.  10 minutes goes by and still there appears to be no action.  The DVD makes a few noises early on and then does nothing.  My monitor shows no signal.
I just upgraded the firmware for the superdrive.
I brought it to my apple store. They tried to install it via a firewire external dvd.  same problem. Being such an old box, I'd have to pay for further diagnostics.
I'm at a loss.  I meet the specs, but Leopard just won't install
    Suggestions please
    Rich

10.5 retail is not available for "download."   It is available as a retail installer disc which looks likeand does not say Upgrade, Dropin, or OEM.
Newer retails not working is odd, because they should work.      You may just have had bad luck.
"Download" is the English term for getting the actual files over the internet.
When you get the CD or DVD and install the contents, that's called an "install" or "installation" depending on how the sentence is written.
If you understood those terms, saying "download" suggests getting it over the internet, which is illegal, unless you purchase from a website that actually has copies to distribute legal copies of the DVD by mail, but then again, what you are doing is installing from DVD, not downloading it.

  • Tiger problem need to reinstall?

Ok..call me what you want, but I need some help!
I installed "avast" for mac, ran it. it came up with a lot of error codes, which I deleted and now I have no imovie, iphoto, garage band, big bang games and who knows what else. including a mac version of "check up" which i paid for. How can I reinstall these things? I tried putting the install disk in and they just pop back out. Please help a foolish artist regain his mac.
Any support will be appreciated. Thank You

    "need to reinstall?"
    Not just yet.
"I have no imovie, iphoto, garage band, big bang games and who knows what else. including a mac version of "check up" which i paid for."
Do a Spotlight search for the above mentioned items.
"I tried putting the install disk in and they just pop back out."
Have you tried your System DVD? Or is the install disc also your System disc?
Make sure the DVD are not dirty, smudged and/or scratched.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448 How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs
Your drive may need cleaning. Drive cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells DVDs/CDs.
I not from your system info that you have a G5 iMac. Check out the following threads & try the solutions mentioned if none of the above works:
SuperDrive Spits dvd's off the desk
    CD drive spits out cds
After all your issues are resolved, strongly recommend that you update to OS 10.4.11.

  • HP Color LaserJet 5550 and Tiger (10.4.11) Driver Problem

I have recently acquired a Color LaserJet 5550hdn. I have updated all drivers and firmware available from the HP Website (Printer Driver, 5550 firmware and Jetdirect 610n firmware). The printer has been factory reset/cold reset etc. to purge any previous custom settings. I am using a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver (933mhz) and Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11). I have made some test prints from both Preview and iPhoto and all have been dark and muddy with respect to colors. I have printed the same images from my wife's PC with HP's PCL 6 Driver for Windows XP and achieve satisfactory results with respect to color (that is to say, without fooling with any color settings in the driver, the image is at least within 10% of the color gamut compared to the screen image). Setting up the printer with the HP Postscript Driver for XP yields similar results as the Mac, dark and muddy colors. So is this a problem with the HP Postscript Driver? Is this a Mac OS X Tiger problem? Do users have color problems with the printer running the Leopard driver?
I previously owned a HP Color LaserJet 8550 (utilizing the same HP Driver for Mac OS X that the 5550 uses) and had default images (no fooling with any color settings in the driver) that were acceptable, again within 10% or less of the screen image color gamut.
I have also downloaded HP's ICC color profiles (CMYK and sRGB) and put them in library/printers/hp/profiles.
With respect to the driver itself, there are two areas in the print dialogue box which seem to have a bearing on color. One is Colorsync and the other is Color Options. Colorsync has two choices ('Standard' and 'In Printer') and I chose 'In Printer' to I assume bypass any Colorsync Conversion. When 'Standard' is chosen the print summary shows the HP Color LaserJet CMYK profile being used. There seems to be no way of changing the default setting in the Colorsync Utility to HP Color LaserJet sRGB. Not sure if it matters as the output for both 'Standard' and 'In Printer' seem to yield the same results. The options under 'Color Options" in the driver under the 'Show Advanced Options' have choices (Basic, Text, Graphics, Photographs, Advanced) and I have played with these to some extent. Although they seem to have some effect on the image, the print is still dark and muddy with respect to colors.
On a final note I have tried a 'GutenPrint' driver to see if it would yield different results.....there was not one for the 5550 so I used a driver for the Color LaserJet 5500......it would only print in grayscale....the resulting image did not look very promising even if it had printed in color.
Insights on any of the above from the community here would be most helpful!
    Thanks,
    -Ray

This is an update to my own post above. I downloaded the Mac OS 9 driver (yes OS 9!, but the QuickSilver is Dual Boot) for the Color LaerJet 5550 and printed (no changes to any of the driver settings) the same image (photo) as I used in Mac OS X. The image was still dark but not as poor from Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger). Although I prefer not to use color management, I used the Colorsync tab in the driver and chose to match to Colorsync with a generic sRGB output profile (no other settings were changed in the HP color options tab). The resulting image was +/- 5% within the color gamut of the screen image (yeah!!!) In Tiger the options under the Colorsync tab in the driver are 'Standard' or 'In Device' and regardless of the choice, the print result is the same, very dark and muted colors. There is no option for sRGB and if set to 'Standard' the print summary always shows a CMYK profile being utilized. Given that the HP Color LaserJet 5550 is an sRGB printer as per HP, perhaps that is a problem? I would assume the 'In Device' option would bypass Colorsync (since there seems to be no other way to turn it off) and use sRGB, but that does not seem to make a difference in the image being printed.
My good success with an OS 9 driver leads me to believe I have a driver problem in Tiger. However, I have no problems with other printers (HP All in One, DesignJet Color Plotter and wide format Epson inkjet....all of which are older) with respect to poor color output. Given this is a current model in the HP line-up and I believe in service during Mac OS X Tiger, it seems hard to fathom other users do/did not experience a problem.
Again, do Leopard users have a problem with color issues on this printer with default driver settings? Does anyone have driver settings/other insights they could share with respect to Tiger to at least get the print image somewaht close to the screen image? As it stands now, regardless of settings, the printed image is dark with muted colors.
Thnaks to anyone who can respond, even if it is to say they have no problems in Leopard/Snow Leopard as I am upgrading to a new Mac soon.

  • Mac Mini using OS X Tiger does not see my HP Scanjet 4670 scanner! HELP!!!!

I have an HP Scanjet 4670 scanner which worked fine on my pervious mac which was an emac with OS X Panther.
However, I now own a G4 Mac Mini running with OS X Tiger and recenly tried to use my scanner with it for the first time only to get the message: "scanner not found" I then went straight to my System Profiler to look at the USB Device Tree and was shocked to see that all my USB devices show up EXCEPT my scanner!
Mechanically, the scanner appears fine (even when I run its 'Hardware Test') but no matter what I do I cant get the Mac to 'see' it. I have reinstalled the HP scanner software old AND new, but to no avail. Although, I'm sure that even with NO HP software on my Mac, the System Profiler should still be detecting a USB device on its tree.
Just out of curiosty I connected my scanner to my old emac (my girlfriend has had it for a few months now) and it has the same problems there too!! WEIRD OR WHAT? The emac is STILL running on Panther - although during the months AFTER I gave it to my GF there has been some minor OSX Panther upgrades installed.
Is it just coincidental bad luck that my scanner became faulty when I changed mac and operating systems? Or is there an OS X Tiger problem lurking somwhere here?
PLEASE PLEASE can someone offer suggestions!!!!????? It is a lovely looking, decent scanner which was not cheap to buy and is only under 2 years old!!!

Looks like you're using software for this scanner that was for Panther only.
Try downloading HP's version of the scanner's software for Tiger.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&produ ct=303641&os=219
And run software update to make sure you're running the latest Tiger update.
If you're already doing this, or it still doesn't work, it could be a damaged USB cable (as your girlfriend Panther system doesn't see it either).

    Some basic questions:
Did you install all of the software, I installed all of the sofrware for my Epson scanner before using it, I'm sure if I jump ahead, I'd be in trouble.
    USB Questions
is it plugged into a usb hub? If so try connecting it directly to the computer.
is the cable your using a usb2 cable? Your new Mac has usb2 ports not usb like the emac, and you'll run into issues using a regular run of the mill usb cable. I ran into a simiar issue with my Kodak 1400 printer, I needed to go out and purchase a usb2 cable.
