[Game development] iphone game development

Hi All,
I am newbie to iphone game development. I am looking for third party game engines like Allegro.
Please suggest me best open source game engine for iphone game development.
Thanks,
Ganesh Pisal

Hi There
You can only use the iPhone Development kit from Apple to develop iPhone Games as far as I am aware, the Allegro game programming library for C/C++ is used for programming on operating systems. The iPhone is based on Objective-C which I believe is fairly different from C and C++.
Hope this helps

  • Developing iphone game

Hello, i am a very new beginner of apple developers community, i am computer science graduate (2 months ago), very interested in games, specially WoW, Diablo, Dota etc, and interested to start developing iOS games, i just bought macbook air 13 yesterday, been learning and reading a bit before i get it about objective c and Xcode work.
I wonder how hard/long it would take to develop a simple yet exciting game, something like free running games, or simpler games. Also where is a good place to start? what strategy should i follow? watching tutorials? follow a sample project? what about graphics work, pointing that i don't have experience in it.
If you want to add any advice or recommendations, i would be more than happy.
    Thank you for your time.

Do you have a paid Individual Developer Account?
If so, use the resources you paid for in the iOS Dev Center. You can search there on 'game' for several related documents, etc.
    Good luck.

  • Best way to develop flash games for desktop + mobile, today

    Hi
It has been a nice run of about 7 or 8 years now that we have developed Flash browser based games for the web exclusively. Of course with the ubiquity of mobile devices, things have changed. Clients are starting to demand, almost assume, that games will work in the browser - on the desktop and on their tablets.
Putting aside the whole discussion of using an HTML5/JS solution instead, we're sticking with Flash for the next project and need to figure out the best way to get it to run on the desktop browser and on the iPad, while maximizing code re-use.
Given the current state of technologies today, what is the best path? This game will be a 2D side-scroller type game, and development will be done mainly with bitmap graphics (as opposed to vector) and spritesheets :
Option 1: Develop the game targeting the 'standard' flash player for web, then port to an iOS AIR 3.2 app, doing appropriate optimizations.
Option 2: Use Starling/Stage3D for desktop, and then port to an iPad app. Just wondering if starling is ready for primetime making production quality games for mobile + desktop. Does Stage3D still work well enough in software mode on older machines?
Option 3: The new feature in CS6 that lets us publish to HTML5. Is this even close to mature enough to publish a full game? The benefit of this solution is that it could run in the browser on the iPad instead of being a separate app.
Thianks so much for any guidance.. I'm also wondering about pitfalls, and optimization techniques involved in any of these.
    -rich

Well I don't know if I can give you 'guidance' without knowing the details of you and your project and all that, but here's my personal opinions:
Option 1: I would go for developing for iOS and Android first and then "in-brower" over the other way around. But I would actually develop for all targets at once so that I know I am not using a solution that breaks another platform/formactor that has to be redone later. iOS has allot more guidelines and things you have to consider than the the 'browser' where there is no approval proccess. So if you can get it approved on iOS then it should be able to go to Android and the browser without so much trouble, but the other way around you could really create allot of stuff that needs to be redone -- Apple is very strict on making sure that the users are not stuck with bad UI or a bad user experience(as is defined by their user interface guidelines). I have some projects that were made for in-browser flash first, and it has been hell porting them over to iOS/Android. The whole way they interact with the user has to be rethought for mobile/small screens/touch screens. If I had made them originally with mobile in mind, then it may not have been as much of an ordeal.
Option 2: I am not familiar with 'starling' or Stage3D, so I can't be helpful here.
Option 3: I was under the impression that the 'publish to HTML5' feature was just for animations, not ActionScript -- Maybe someone else can answer this for sure. Even if it could do ActionScript, there still may be no way to access some of the stuff an app could (saving levels/data/whatever to the device hard-drive, etc).
Anyhow, curious why you would want to avoid vectors? With so many screen resolutions, and the potential that they may get higher in the future (like they did with retina display on iOS), vector would make your project better suited to work on future devices without having to redo things and add higher resolution bitmaps later. If you have something that absolutely demands insane perfomance, then the bitmap/spritesheet stuff might be needed I guess... (or if it is some '8-bit retro' type of thing)

  • Which product to develop new game on?

I have Flash games that are in Flex but mostly as3 so it wouldn't be a big effort to move it to Flash CC. I'm planning a big update to the games (new graphics, animations, sounds etc.) to really bring them up to date.
My initial target is Mac/Windows App stores but also want to compile to Android/iOS App stores.
I've been working with Flash/Flex for many years but what should I develop it in now?
Most Starling apps seem to be written for Flash Builder - but Adobe have passed Flex to Apache.
There have been some improvements in Flash CC but most of the effort seems to be going into Edge Animate but Javascript just doesn't have the speed yet.
Flash/Flex/Starling seems to still be the only choice for performane right now???? But are they a dead-end?

Over the couple of years Oracle have been moving towards a more Java based development environment, and as a result have developed the Application Development Framework (ADF). This is a structured Java development platform based on the MVC (Model View Controller) design pattern.
JDeveloper is the tool used to develop these applications in, not only that but it allows you to develop SQL code, manipulate the database, design the business components and much much more.
I've read some reports/articles that hint Oracle are concentrating on ADF as a move away from Forms/Reports - to a more Java/Web based development platform, read into that what you will.
What I can tell you is that I have almost completed a the first phase of a large scale project (that has taken two years to develop) in Java and ADF, which contains numerous master-detail pages and the results are very impressive. This project was developed using JDeveloper 10.1.2, but within the last month JDeveloper 10.1.3 has been launched and this contains a considerable number of additional features including ADF JSF (Application Development Framework Java Server Faces) that provide even more functionality.
I hope this overview is of some use to you - but the best advice I can give you is to look on Oracles' web site at JDeveloper, ADF, ADF JSF and some of the tutorials/documentation that is available as these will help you make your final decision I'm sure.
    Thanks

    Hi Tatae55,
I think that your purchase failed for some connectivity reason but it will be restored as soon as you try to 'Restore' the purchase or 'Re-Buy' the Non-consumable product.
Don't worry, you will not be charged again if your purchase was successfull before.

  • Learning ActionScript for developing FLASH Games

    Hi ,
I dont whether i can post this question here or there is any other Forum for ActionScript , if so sorry for that .
Now to the question , I know some what ActionScript like Events , custom UI Components , and classes  as required for simple FLEX development .
To what extent we need to learn ActionScript to develop Flash Games ??
Can anybody suggest me as where to start with , what is the correct approach and is there any IDE avialable for that .
Please share your ideas on this

    hi,
Depends on what sort of games you want to write, firstly you will definitely need to become familiar with actionscript, most gaming and 3d engines for flash games are done in pure actionscript. You can developer your games in flex even if you don't uses mxml basically the real power of games is in the code which means actionscript.

  • Best way to remotely update data in iPhone game?

I'm thinking of developing an iPhone game, and one of the things I definately want to be able to do is update values in the game remotely from a server, without having to re-submit the IPA file to apple, so I was wondering what would be the best approach to do that? I'm developing in Flash CS5.5.

It's easy if you want upade game files, not game engine binary.
You can make your app that will load swf file. So you can make engine that will load all files externaly from device. Firstly you run app and if it connected by wifi - ask user for upadate wish and that simply download from http files as binary and save they using FileSystem

  • Pokémon iPhone Game

I've begun development on a Pokémon MMO for the iPhone (more information on the game @ http://www.mobilepokedex.blogspot.com) and have run into a snafu. While the development team behind Mobile Pokédex is composed of some extremely talented programmers, we can't code the client side of this game (the iPhone portion). This isn't because we're unable to, it's because none of us own Macs. It doesn't look as if we'll come into possession of a Mac (or Macs) within the next few months either.
If there's anyone here willing to help with development, contact information can be found on the development blog.

Nice job, just bought the game and works really smooth except i don’t get the blocking training after the levels completed, seems impossible to get the meter fully up. Aside its sick that you got it up and running on the app store.
Wanted to ask if you know or heard about any ways to implement the apple game center? I’m launching my game mid February and it would be a perfect feature as right now I’m using the URL methods to run a php of my server to display a leader board and i think apple won't allow it as they say you’re not allowed to run any external code, plus the whole game center things would be a great addition

    Hi Grandmaz5,
If you are having issues connecting to Facebook on your iPad, and you have already troubleshot the Facebook app itself, you may want to check the built-in iOS settings for Facebook; you may find the following article helpful:
