Game Sessions at JavaOne(tm) 2002

This is the JavaOne event for this year.
Does anyone know if there will be video / transcripts of the sessions? I am in NY and won't be able to make it . But i would really like to get video or transcript of this event.
Game Sessions at JavaOne(tm) 2002
This years JavaOne(tm) will see the addition of 3 sessions around game development. This is a big change over last years JavaOne(tm) where most game related discussions happened in the Birds of a Feather (or BOF) sessions. The addition of Java(tm) game discussions to the formal schedule underscores Sun Microsystems increasing focus on the games industry overall. The sessions for JavaOne(tm) are:
TS-3199 - Building a High-Performance Multiplayer Internet Game--With JavaTM Technology
BUS-3354 - JavaTM Technology 2001: The Year of the Games
TS-1243 - JavaTM Game Profile Update
TS-3347Developing Games for JavaTM 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2METM) Technology-Enabled Mobile Devices

wow you are quite lucky --
well, the resource you would need might depend on platform or type of game you want to make.
If you want to make java applets for jvm 1.0 or jvm 1.1 that runs in the browser -- then i'd have to tell you the best resource for that -- you'd have to email me however at [email protected]
if you want to make real java games using the latest jvm , games that would be displayed at an event like Javaone or played on playstation etc then truly the greatest source is found in the forums at javagaming.org
In terms of 3D stuff and special techniques, you find them by looking through the discussions. People in there provide links to some very fascinating engines and samples. this site is maintained by sun.
Perhaps you have to dig a little but -- right up front
If you want to talk about java game development offline send me email

Have a look here at a decent example of Web Cam capture code in JMF....
if I do say so myself :-)
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=570463
    Look in initialise(), at line
formatControl = (FormatControl)player.getControl("javax.media.control.FormatControl" );That's how you get custom controls from a player.
There's also a call for in Player
java.awt.Component getControlPanelComponent() which might return an Awt component to control the TV Tuner.
So you may have to take take component, and add it to the JFrame.
If that component doesn't do it, then try iterating through
    Control[] Player.getControls()
to see if there's any tv tuner control there.
Ps. that code only displays web cam video feed and grabs single photos from it. It won't record video clips. But... it's a good start.
    regards,
    Owen

  • Multiple users to share same session

Hi guys. I am writing a Flash game, where the state of the game and the moves will be stored in the session. Several users will be sharing the same game session though.
Flash will send variables containing the move made by a particular player to a Servlet, that will be on a different web server. That Servlet will then return to Flash, when requested an XML response containing the state of the game for the next player.
Lets say there are always 3 players playing per game. How do I share this same session among those 3 users?
    Question 1:
Is there a way to store a Vector of sessions in a Servlet?
    Question 2:
Supposed the above answer is yes, I could send back and forth an id for the session between Flash and the Servlet. Is it possible to associate a session stored with a particular id? And how would I retrieve that session based on a given id?

Do you want to run multiple games concurrently? If so, the application object won't work, because all the user data will then be available to all users.
I would recommend that you continue to use the session-per-user paradigm. Instead of storing all the game data in session, store it in a global lookup structure (a Singleton or static variable of the servlet, probably a Hashtable). Key the game data for each user off of a unique id (potentially the session id?). In each user session, store the id's of the other users they are playing against.
So, when you are responding to a request from one user, you can quickly get the id's for the other players, use those to lookup the necessary game data for those users, and then use it to create your response.
At that point, all you need is some way to expire the data from your storage structure. If you store a "last access" timestamp along with the game data, you can use a thread to expire old data in much the same way that a session would be expired.

  • RMI game behind a router

    Hey all,
I have developed a two player game in Java. I use RMI to run it as a client server game... The problem arises when I try to connect two computers behind different routers. I can manually configure both routers to forward data on port 1099 to each ip... But ip's can change and I can't configure everyones router... Is there a way in Java to accept incoming requests? Really, my question is, how do other online games get through, such as Battlefield 1942? Is there a way to allow access like that??? Or do they "piggy back" on another port? And which port.
    Thanks
    Dave

Unfortunately for a client-server application you are going to have to do a significant rewrite. Not only that the Server will have to be hosted on a Servlet Container web server application like Tomcat. This server machine needs to be accessible over TCP/IP communication.
Here is a tutorial on Servlets to get you started.
I made similar games on this concept and I warn you that it is not easy but extremely rewarding if you can pull it off.
A servlet just basically 'serves' data. It waits for a request from an application, whether that application be a Java app, an internet browser, whatever... and 'handles' the request, does some processing, and then returns a 'response'.
In the case of a java app, you can send actual Java objects as a request to the servlet, and have the servlet return Java objects as a response. The servlet would keep track of all information pertaining to a game session. Eg. (client app keeps sending requests to the server to see if it is his turn yet. If true then stop sending requests and begin your turn).
This is not to say that you need to scrap what you have right now... many games have an online aspect as well as a LAN based network for multiplayer games. Perhaps you can allow the user to select what kind of multiplayer game they wish to play?
I hope this helps and good luck.

  • Low framerates on games

Hello everyone. Here's my situation: I recently bought an iMac and I loaded Windows XP Pro on Boot Camp for the occasional late-night game session. Problem is, I turned the notch on World of Warcraft's video settings to High and the frame rate plummets to a disappointing 30-20 FPS. I also tried playing Call of Duty: World at War on High and it suffers from low frame rates.
I find this appalling considering that the PC equivalent of my iMac's system specs can stomp over any game that's not Crysis and I find it hard to believe that a A$2,999 machine struggles to play games when it exceeds the recommended system requirements.
Can anyone share their thoughts on my predicament? Thank you.

I'll try installing Vista Ultimate x64 on Boot Camp and report back with the results in the next couple of days. I'll try the drivers on laptopvideo2go along with the driver sweeper method while I'm at it.
I was really hoping I could get the best of both worlds by doing my work on Mac OS X while still enjoying games on Windows. Too bad video driver support is crap. The iMac could've been a formidable gaming machine but I can tell that the low frame rate problems lie in the drivers because my friend has a gaming rig with a GeForce 8 series graphics card and comparable specs to my iMac and Call of Duty World at War runs smoothly.
*sigh. Looks like Microsoft still runs the gaming world

  • Standard documents missing?

Hello. First of all, I'm totally new to MHP and its applications, so sorry if I'm telling nonsense.
I'm trying to get the more documents I can, but it seems that standard documentation that was before at
    http://www.mhp.org/technical_essen/pdf_and_other_files
is no longer available :(. Anyone can tell me where can I find those documents? I'm looking for some document that illustrates which parts of the MHP standards are covered by each API, so it's a little difficult to me to know "who does what" into the puzzle of DVB, HAVI, DAVIC and Java TV APIs, and I'd like to examinate the javadoc's to have an idea.
While I can achieve this, I'll try to learn something from the excellent tutorials at
    http://www.mhp-interactive.org
    Thanks in advance.
    Joan.

The www.mhp.org WWW site has been re-organised. If you go to the top level of the site, and look under "MHP Technology" and then "MHP 1.0", I think you can find all the documents which were there before.
You can also find information in papers given at the JavaOne conference each year.

  • Mini-DVI to Video (composite or S-Video), can't get it to work

    hi guys,
I got a MacBook (bought in Japan) and a mini-DVI to Video adapter (Bought in Canada recently).
I am trying to watch TV, but I am getting a very bad b&w image (as if I was watching using a very old antenna).
I changed the display resolution to the lowest option 640x480 (60Mhz) (Actually I tried every single resolution)
I tried both the yellow composite cable or the S-Video to yellow composite cable but both produce the exact same image.
I am out of ideas, I have a feeling that it's trying to send a PAL signal on a NTSC television (Is that even possible?)
    Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    ps. I'm running on Leopard
ps2. My TV is not old, it's a pretty decent Toshiba

    I found this:
    QUOTE
Thanks guys for your help, I actually found some advice from this website
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=101628
    Success!
    Here is the content below from the site, tricky to find if your a novice like me!;
    Indeed there is.
1.First connect the DVI cable, so the Powerbook switches to multiple display.
    2. Launch system preferences>display
    3. There should now be 3 tabs on the top (Display, Arrangement,Color). Select the 'Arrangement' tab.
    4. Check the 'Mirror Displays' box. The Powerbook display will reset to mirror mode.
    5. When the display settles, pull out the dvi cable, let it settle and plug it in again.
    6. You should now see two dialogs, Color LCD and NTSC/PAL.
    7. Select the resolution you want on the Color LCD dialog.
    8. Select to bring to front the NTSC/PAL dialog and you will see the Refresh rate drop down list available for 50 Hertz(PAL) selection.
Looks quite bothersome but works for me. Was trying to record game session on a PAL camcorder and stumbled on your discussion while looking for solutions, found it while meddling the Preferences. Thought I'd share it even though it's been some time. Happy New Year.
    END QUOTE
    Hope that helps!

Considerably improved over the GT70, purchased from Ken at GenTech PC, I am one of the first official GT72 owners on the planet.
So, what improvements does the GT72 bring to the table?
     1. Improved chassis design.
     2. Larger touchpad, smooth and seamless with the palm rest.
     3. A large, cool to the touch, glass-like polymer palm rest.
     4. More USB 3.0 ports.
     5. A 230W PA.
     6. A 1080p webcam
     7. Revised Steelseries keyboard, flex-free, with brighter back-lighting.
     8. Dual fan cooling solution, with improved chassis vent design, a better fan control profile, ergo.....
     9. Better overall temps, with quieter operation.
     10. Re-designed chassis, and finally a new model designation.
     11. Gone is the problematic capacitance touch bar, replaced with positive touch switches.
     12. Gone is finicky Optimus switching, replaced with a simple dedicated GPU switch.
     13. mSATA SuperRAID 2, is replaced with M.2 SuperRAID 3, increasing speed, and the capacity of the RAID set. ( M.2 should improve significantly with the Intel 9-Series chipset)
     14. Killer Doubleshot Pro, wherein Ethernet and Wireless can be used independently, or simultaneously for improved bandwidth.
     15. And finally, due to the overall re-design, a more intuitive gaming experience.

    Initial thoughts......
Well, here it is..... the MSI GT72-2PE Dominator Pro-007US, and the photos below do not do it justice. It's Bold, it's Bad, it's Fast, it's Powerful, and honestly, there is not much, not to like about this notebook. If there is one thing I feel could have been better, it would be the display. The Chi Mei CMN1735 has good brightness, color, and contrast, but lacks decent viewing angles.
Anyhow, I have already spent a lot of time with tweaking, photos, benchmarks, etc., so I am going to cut-to-the-chase, and try to make this as short as possible.
As to performance, the benchmarks below attest to the GT72's awesomeness, so what about noise, and the redesigned dual-fan cooling solution? Simply put, it is quieter than the GT70, has a better fan profile, and temps are well managed. Given the hardware, of course you will hear the fans spin up when the system is stressed, but it is not at all disturbing..... and when doing common task, the fans are only noticed if you get close and cozy with the system. Ambient room temperature was 78F, and the system's idle temps were CPU@38C, and GPU@36C. Without the use of Cooler Booster ('stock' fan profile only), during benchmarks the CPU reached 78C, and the GPU averaged 80C, peaking to 82C during the 3DMark Sky Diver benchmark. The palm rest remains cool to the touch, it's polymer is smooth as glass, and it's surface is seamless across the touchpad. Only a mild warmth rises from the keyboard.
The Steelseries keyboard is indeed flex-free, keys are very positive and responsive, and the back-lighting is brighter..... which I attribute to the keyboard's re-design. Looks awesome!
So what about SuperRAID 3, is it fast? Oh YEAH! Performance exceeds SuperRAID 2, as expected, and the system boots to desktop in as little as 6 to 7 seconds. HD Tune Pro reports an average read time for the Toshiba M.2 SSD's, as 1535MB/s..... while the previous SuperRAID 2 Sandisk X100 mSATA SSD's was an average of 1411MB/s. On the other hand, SuperRAID 3 really shines in the Crystal Disk Mark scores. To best evaluate the 'Real-World' performance of SuperRAID 3, I used the PCMark 8 Storage Test. For those unfamiliar with this benchmark, the performance score of 5014 is very respectible. The duration of this grueling benchmark is generally 1 to 3 hours, and the GT72 sped through in just 1 hour and 8 minutes. All in all, I applaud MSI's use of the new M.2 SSD's, but I think performance will most improve with future 9-Series Intel chipsets.
With all the attributes I've mentioned above, it is when gaming, that you understand the mastery of it's intuitive design. The re-designed flex-free keyboard, the large smooth & heat-free palm rest, the spatial Dynaudio speakers, and vivid display, all lend to an immersive gaming experience. So much so, I found myself playing my test game, far longer than originally intended.
To run the GT72 through it's paces, I chose the recently released, AMD optimized title, Sniper Elite III, by Rebellion. With settings max'ed to 'Ultra', the GTX-880M smoothly sliced through the frames like a hot knife to butter, with frame-rates from 54 to 82Fps, averaging at 65Fps. Game play was extremely smooth and fluid, and never a hic-cup or artifact.
To represent the 'Out-of-the-Box' experience, I played with the stock fan profile, and Cooler Booster was never used. Like with my benchmark testing, the fan noise was not disturbing, and game audio though the Dynaudio speakers easily comes to the forefront. Fan noise was never a distraction. Temps of the GPU peaked to 82C, but averaged 64C, and the CPU peaked at 68C, averaging 54C. Again, with hardware like this, and without the use of Cooler Booster, these temps are outstanding.... and the new dual fan design is a success!
Initially I intended my game session to be an hour..... in no time it became 3+ hours, and playing on this notebook is simply FUN!
The look and feel is very stylish, and smooth finish is actually somewhat fingerprint resistant. Overall, with these great looks, it's fully loaded system specs, and stellar performance scores, the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro not only entitles bragging rights..... it DEMANDS them!
All of this has me VERY excited for the upcoming next-gen 9-Series, Maxwell, X-treme Edition GT72! Can't wait!
    Enjoy!

  • Problem with timers in a udp state pattern

    Hi.
As a project on my school, i have created a bomberman game, that supports up to 4 players on a network. And it works fine, when there is no network timers involved, that means no packet loss handling.
The network part of the game, is build up by UDP, to make the application support multicast. The game session flow, is build up by states which are designed like an extended 2 phase commit pattern.
That means, the server sends Gameinfo to the clients. Then all the cliens replies with an ACK.
The server then sends ExecuteGameinfo. Then the clients replies with an ACK.
The server sends/requests playerinfo, and the clients reply with player info. (the server uses the player info to create gameinfo).
These 3 states, continues to go on, as long as the game is running. And without timers, it is working great.
But what if a packet is lost? (on a LAN, packetloss is very rare, but for the sake of my projects issue, custom made reliability in UDP, I have to face the problem). Then the server would just hang, and wait for the client reply.
To avoid that, i want to use a timer. If the server havent got any reply for like a 100 ms., the server should resend the package.
And now to the actual problem :)
Ive tried using java.util.Timer, and javax.swing.Timer. But both timers does not work in my case. Its like:
    Server starts timer.
    Server sends Gameinfo.
    100 ms passes.
    Server resends Gameinfo.
    Server restarts timer.
    100 ms passes.
(this goes on for 5 times, and then the client is kicked)
    Server receives ACK.
    Server receives ACK.
    Server receives ACK.
    Server receives ACK.
    Server receives ACK.
On the client side it looks like this:
    Recieves Gameinfo, replies with ACK
    Recieves Gameinfo, replies with ACK
    x 5
So its like the server is to concentrated on that timer (even though it runs as a thread), so i doesent notice the incoming packets, that eventually stacks up, and is handled after the timer tasks are done.
And this is exactly the problem that is described in the Timer api: " Timer tasks should complete quickly. If a timer task takes excessive time to complete, it "hogs" the timer's task execution thread. This can, in turn, delay the execution of subsequent tasks, which may "bunch up" and execute in rapid succession when (and if) the offending task finally completes."
Ive tried using a homemade timer, with a Thread.sleep(), it is a bit better, but the problem is the same. 1 out of 20 incoming packets, is "ignored" by the server.
I really hope any of you can help.
I havent included any code, it would be to much code. But if you are interested in looking at something i can easily paste it.
Thank you very much for your time :)
    Regards.

Don't use a Timer, use DatagramSocket.setSoTimeout(). Then your receives will only block for that amount of time, throwing SocketTimeoutException if no datagram arrives.

  • Error creating a database on oracle9i

    I have win2k server SP2 with 30 Gb and 1.7Gb RAM.
    I installed oracle9i software Ok.
But when I create a database an error appears in dbca (read or write error), I tried first a general purpose database, after I tried a new database with less options but the same error appears.
I also tried create sql scripts and run manually de creation of the database, but it says that is not connected to oracle.
In a .trc file a found this text:
    *** SESSION ID:(7.3) 2002-06-14 16:08:21.000
ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE ha fallado // failed to create the database
ORA-01990: error al abrir el archivo de contrase?as 'C:\oracle\ora90\DATABASE\PWDaiac.ORA'

OSD-04002: no se ha podido abrir el archivo
    // cannot open file
O/S-Error: (OS 2) El sistema no puede hallar el archivo especificado.
// the system cannot find the file specified
    Any idea?
    Thanks

No schemas have been created. You should at least have the defaults schema SYS and SYSTEM, isn't it ?
Well, you can read the documentation about import :
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96652/ch02.htm#SUTIL002
    Then comeback for further question.

  • How do you use 3 devices on one Router?

Hello< I'm new to the forum and new to networking.  My question may seem very basic and it may not, I'm not sure.  I will say that I have tried to learn things about routers and networking over the past few days with not much success.  Of the 3 million plus acronyms used for networking and networking devices, I know maybe two of them, so trying to read about this stuff is like trying to read pig latin.
My set-up is one Lynksys cable modem and a WRT54G wireless router using Comcast cable internet.  I have one PC wired to the router, one Xbox360 wired to the router, and one PSP (Playstation Portable) wirelessly connected to the router using a WPA personal.  I currently have my router set to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP."
The PC is always connected to the internet and always works, although, once and a while I do get the little yellow shield in my toolbar that says there is an IP conflict.  After setting up or resetting the router I can then log on with both my PC and the Xbox at the same time with no trouble.  While both the Xbox and PC are looged in,the PSP will not log in,says "could not connect."  As soon as I log off the Xbox, the PSP will then be able to connect without doing anything else.  If I then log off the PSP I have to reset the router before the Xbox can log in again.  If I do not reset the router at this point, and run the Xbox network test utility it will say the IP address has failed.
Is there a way that I can log in with all 3 devices at once?  If not, is there a way that I can at least not have to reset the router everytime I switch from the PSP to the Xbox?
Thanks to anyone who replies to this post.  I am getting a little frustrated and I can't seem to gain any understanding of these devices or how they work.

Thanks a lot for that information Sean.  Those guides made it extremely easy to set up all my devices to a static IP.  I now have all 3 devices logged at the same time and no longer need to reset my router.  Nice!
There is one problem though.  Now, when I use the test utility on the Xbox, everything is confirmed, but when it gets to NAT it says "moderate."   It used to say "open."
    IP Adress - Confirmed
    DNS         - Confirmed
    MTU         - Confirmed
    ICMP        - Confirmed
    Xbox Live  - Connected
NAT          - Moderate  (should say "open")
    This is what it says when I select "more info" under NAT;
"This test indicates the type of NAT that your router or gateway is using.  Devices that perform strict or moderate NAT can restrict or limit the ability of gamers to find each other, participate in sessions, or hear each other on Xbox Live.  If your router or gateway is using a strict or moderate NAT, replace it with a Xbox Live compatible device.  For a listing of compatible devises visit www.xbox.com."
I have since tried joining a live game session and everything seemed to work fine, although I havn't yet had a chance to confirm if the Live voice chat is working yet.
I have checked the Xbox website and found that my modem is certified Xbox Live compatible.  It lists WRT54G (V1, V2, and V3) supporting firmware version 3.01.3 and 3.03.6.  It also states that firmaware v2.02.7 will not allow you to log onto Xbox Live, so I know I don't want that version.  In my router's set-up menu it says Firmware v1.00.9.  Should I update my firmware?  Am I missing something else?
Again, thanks for your help and hopefully I can figure out this "moderate" thing.
    Hi
Well first of all , No worries budd.
    and secondly ,
am happy about the fact u did the settings correctly ,thats why u able to get online with All three devices . appreciate it .
    Thirdly ,
firmware could be an issue . as u stated u firmware version on router showin as v1.00.9 . i found out it is WRT54G v5.
upgrade the router to the latest firmware version - v1.02.5  !
How to upgrade the router in correct mannar , click this magic link .
Fourth , if stll problem persist !

  • Can anyone tell me how to port forward and setup an XBOX 360 using my Time Capsule??

    Xbox 360
When playing the game online, the minimum speed of your network should be 128kbps. The ideal network speed for playing the game online is 768kbps. If you are having a problems with lag check the following:
    Network Troubleshooting:
Disable any firewall or security features on your router.
Set port forwarding on your router to the IP address of your Xbox 360. This game uses port 3074 (UDP/TCP). Additionally Xbox LIVE requires ports 80, 53 TCP and 88, 53 UDP.
Place your Xbox 360 into the DMZ of your router.
Disconnect your router and try the game. If it works regularly at this point something about your router may not be completely compatible with the specific needs of this game. Check with your router manufacturer and Microsoft's Xbox Live Connection Issues page for additional steps that may need to be done to resolve the issue you are having. You can also verify that you have an Xbox Live compatible router.
If you are having issues connecting while multiple Xbox 360 consoles are connected on the same network, try forwarding port 3074 (UDP/TCP) for one Xbox 360 and setting the other as DMZ. There is a chance that this may not resolve you issue,  if it doesn’t then you may want to consider getting an additional public IP address by contacting your Internet Service Provider and assigning it to one of these two consoles.
NOTE: If setting port forwarding or DMZ helps your connection issue, you may want to assign your Xbox 360 a static IP address within your home network. This can help to ensure that the configurations you made do not need to be done again. You can visit PortForward's Static IP Guide for a detailed guide on how to do this.
NOTE: Many broadband internet modems are coming with routing capabilities built in. Please contact your internet service provider to determine if your internet modem has an integrated router. If it does, they should be able to assist you with the steps above for setting up your router.
Once you have verified that your network setup is not the cause of the issue, try the following:
Try connecting to a different server. Some servers may have other players connected to them that you do not have an optimal connection with. In most games this is accomplished by backing out to the main menu and then selecting multiplayer again. From there you can try connecting to another online game.
Run the Xbox Network Self Test to see how strong your NAT is currently set to. Once the test is completed you will be notified if there is an issue with your connection. If you select "More Info" you will be given information about your NAT type and some steps to resolve any issues with your connection.
Moderate and Strict NAT types may have issues connecting to online matches. You may get the error "Notice - The game session is no longer available." If you do then enabling UPnP, forwarding port 3074, or placing your Xbox in your router's DMZ may resolve this issue. Please consult your router documentation for instructions on how to do this.

Whoa....this just went way over my head.... I already have 6.1 installed for my Airport Utility.
Read again what I wrote.. 6.1 is the problem.. or part of it.
You need to install the earlier 5.6 version which I have given you explicit instructions to do.
I have done something now and can not connect the XBOX at all now....unless you can provide me step by step directions I may have to call Apple Support.
This will happen over and over.. just press reset and start again.. you need to learn how to do the setup and using 5.6 utility will help you.. as will using ethernet from the computer to the TC.. trying to fix things over wireless is like sitting on a tree branch you are sawing off. As soon as you update you will fall to the ground.
I am not that sure that Apple Support will have any idea.
Do a google search .. you will find most people struggle with this.. Microsoft made the xbox to use upnp with vista specs.. if you use a router without upnp, ie any apple router.. you will have issues.
Have a go at bypassing the problem.. I have no idea if this will work.. I do not use a TC as the main router because much of my network including xbox and ps3 is just a pain.. I use a modem router with upnp. And bridge the TC.. that is the setup I would recommend.
Try this.. once you have installed 5.6 utility.
Get the IP of the XBox and click enable default host.. and put the IP address in there.. this is called DMZ.. all unassigned packets are forwarded to this ip address.. it is like a port forwarding for all ports.
See if it helps.. If it does you will need to lock the xbox address so it doesn't change.. we can get to that.
Tell me what kind of broadband you have and what modem router first.. none of this will work if you have double NAT.
