Garageband 10.0.1 slow

Anyone else finding the new garageband 10 running slow? Especially when editing... version 6 seems to run fine (still have a copy of it). Dont thinks is my MBP as all my other programs are going good..
Any suggestions??.. Thanks

You list your specs as 4GB. It is debatable if that is "sufficient".
It all depends. If you have any other memory hogs like Safari or iPhoto running then your availalbe Memory will be gone in no time. I have the feeling that this situation (memory management) is getting worse with every app and every OSX upgrade.
Make sure you know if your system is "paging out". That means, at some point your system "outsoures" storage to your (slower) hard drive instead of keeping it in (faster) RAM. This might be ok for any other app but is the death nail fo any audio app.
CHeck your Activity Monitor app (or any other utility app like "Menu Meter") to know when you "crossed that line". At that moment it is a good idea to reastart your machine and reclaim the RAM memory.
Hope that helps

  • Garageband 10 going SOOO slow...help please.

    Hello everyone,
I just downloaded the newest version of Garageband (v.10) and now I've noticed that it is going extremely slow. This is a brand new iMac I'm running it on. My specs are as folllows:
    27 inch model
    3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    1TB HD
I really feel like my computer should be running this without a problem. Why is it lagging so hard?
I don't have any other programs running (besides an instance of Safari).
The reason I'm worried is because I have a project coming up in which I will need to crank out a LOT of music in a very short period of time. I need this thing to be operating at top capacity.
    Is there something I'm missing?
Is it possible to revert back to the older version of Garageband that I know worked just fine?
PLEASE HELP, I'm in trouble if I can't fix this.

I don't have any other programs running (besides an instance of Safari)
Safari can be a memory hog - if in doubt, quit Safari, before working with GarageBand.
Is it possible to revert back to the older version of Garageband that I know worked just fine?
If you did not delete your older GarageBand version, when you upgraded, it will be still installed. The GarageBand installer will have moved it to a subfolder of Applications -look for a folder GarageBand 6.0.5 in Applications. You can use both GarageBand version in parallel, no problem.
and now I've noticed that it is going extremely slow
Try to narrow down the problem. Is this the same on all projects?
Then check, if you have incompatible audio units installed. GarageBand 10.0 is not compatible with older Audio Units.  And if you are using audio interfaces, check, if there are updates for the drivers.

  • After update, Garageband 10 is deadly slow in Mavericks 10.9.3

After updating to Mavericks 10.9.3 and to Garageband 10.0.2, Garageband is very slow, permanently triggering the beach ball - especially when editing piano rolls.
Looking at the Activity Monitor at such moments, I see that the WindowServer process takes 100% CPU.
Any help would be much appreciated.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • Snow Leapard, clean install, garageband, getting disk to slow 10005 error. What to do?

I run a computer business. My customer gave me a white macbook core duo. I upgraded to 2gigs of memory from 512mb. I then purchased a full copy of snow leapard and did a clean install. I setup garageband for the first time. This is all I want to use the computer for. I don't deal with macs in my business. I only work on windows. So, I thought this computer would be nice just to use to setup a small recording studio. I did everything by the book and now when I record I am getting the disk to slow error 10005. This happened after I recorded about five songs. I checked the we and it seems like this error has been around for years with frustration and no resolution. My question is this. Should I just buy another computer or waste my time trying to fix this error. I don't mean that in a bad way. Since this error has been around for so long, I don't to spend all my time working on the computer when I could be recording. What would you do?

error -10005 errAEReadDenied  or  telBadProcErr: bad msgProc specified
    Drive could be going.
Backup off the machine what you have, c boot off the 10.6.3 disk and use Disk Uility to Erase the drive with Zero fill (Security option) and then reinstall OS X and try again, likely will clear up the issue.
This will map off any bad sectors as I'm sure your familiar with the proceedure. Sometimes this works quite well.
If this doesn't work, try a external drive with 10.6 installed on it, hold the option key down to boot from it.
Revert the RAM back to factory too, right specs?
    Good Luck.

  • Garageband Disk is too slow or system overload

I Have followed all the recommended posts of clearing up memory, closing apps, restarting GarageBand, restarting my computer, and I still consistently receive the disk too slow error even after starting up. I have time machine off, I have locked my tracks, I have even merged and consolidated tracks to save space and I still can't play a song longer than 5-10 seconds without receiving the error. Someone please help

Garageband is running on my system drive. I have 246.4GB of free space with 4GB of RAM? I think? That's the "memory" in the "about this Mac" right? There is something called L2 and L3 cache and I don't know what those are.  1600 MHz speed. Whenever I run "disk doctor" it tells m I have over 200 MB of log files to clear out almost everytime. I feel like there's gotta be something else running other than time machine that slows the Mac down. I've shut time machine off for the time being but still. I do have a lot of loops on the computer. I do not keep them on a separate drive and they always take about a minute to load. But with the amount of free space I have and the memory I think I should be ok right? Or are the loops too much for Garageband to handle?

  • Garageband running very slow on my new Macbook Pro

I have just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro - base model - and Garageband is running very slow. I've added nothing else to my Macbook yet......
Any advice would be much appreciated!

I've looked for the update and I have the latest version. When I tried to repair permissions it wouldn't let me as it said all permissions were OK when I verified the disc....
Your computer is farrrrr more powerful than what you're describing, so something is definitely amiss.
Are you saying in Disk Utility, you are unable to click "Repair Disk Permissions?" Does your user identity have admin privileges? I'm not sure if that's a requirement to be able to repair disk permissions or not, but the ability to repair disk permissions should always be available to you.
Another thing you could try in terms of troubleshooting is to go into system preferences -> accounts, and create a new account. It can be a temporary one just to test this. Then, in the new account, you could see if you have the same problems. You could always delete the account after the test.
You could also try recording to an external drive. A firewire drive would work best (recording to external firewire drives generally improves performance) and would rule out the internal drive as the culprit.
If you are still having problems, you could always call AppleCare, which can walk you through a hardware test, or bring the computer into an Apple store to have them check out, in case there's something wrong with the computer itself.

  • Slowing down and Speeding up

I'm trying to put the Free bird solo into Garageband so I can slow it down and practice it. My friend (who can never have enough speed with his techno) also wanted to put the Voodoo People remix (by Prodigy) into Garageband so he could speed it up. Are these things possible? I'm aware that you can "adjust the tempo", but this doesn't seem to change anything...Please help!

  • Why is WAV file Voice track playing slow, how to speed up

I drop a WAV file voice track into GarageBand and it plays slow. How can I avoid, and/or fix this condition?

My brushes still run slow especially at low opacity in the 2-8% range for gentle retouching work.  There is a 3-5 second delay sometimes.
I have updated vertsion of Photoshop CS4
Have Open GL Nvidia 7800 authorized board
have latest drivers for video board.
Using 137 gig separate hard drive for cache and scratch
Why would I still be getting this delay?
Sometimes I set my cache level to 1 or 6 to see if that changes things...doesnt do much it seems
    Anything else I can try??

  • Enhance tuning not working

I upgraded to the new Garageband, and the "enhance tuning" function doesn't seem to work at all anymore. Does anyone know if this Apple reducing it's tuning/vocoder effect or if its just my machine?
Also: I just upgraded to 10.5.1 and Garageband is acting extremely slow, won't even play back one track in a project I'm working on. Is there a way to fix this?
If someone has some suggestions for solutions to these problems, it'd be much appreciated.

  • Planning Emac Upgrade, Is this Logical

I have an emac G4 1.25GHz with 768MB ram running OSX 10.3.9 and I am needing to upgrade this for a number of reasons. It is running somewhat sluggish and there is no more support for Itunes and Quick Time. My plans are to upgrade the Ram to 2GB, add an external hard drive and upgrade the Operating system to either Tiger or Leopard.
    1. Will this work?
    2. Is it logical to do so or would it make more sense to just buy a new system?

to answer both of your question:
    1. yes, even leopard, but then you probably want indeed 2GB of RAM, 1GB is enough to run Leopard (or even 512MB) but using 2GB will make it faster and it's useful since you probably also want some program that are not part of Mac OS X.
me personally, I'm using a eMac Education special edition.
wich has a 1,0Ghz PowerPC G4, I upgraded it to 2GB of ram.
got a copy of Leopard from MacMe (groningen, netherland), and installed that.
I didn't get a external HD, may do so someday.
right now, I can do mostly everything I want on it.
just got a Mini-VGA to VGA adapter and now using a nice 22 inch wide screen CHIMEI CMV223D display with it.
also connected a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000. and I can use it wonderfully.
but keep in mind that a emac may take a bit longer to start apps then a new iMac.
once started most run nicely though.
and it can also run iLife.
    with exception of two parts:
GarageBand Learn-To-Play (requires a dual-core intel processor) but only Learn to play won't work, further GarageBand will work fine, slower then on a new mac, but perfectly usable.
and iMovie, which needs at least a 1.9Ghz G5.
it can also run iWork, with no exceptions.
    as for 2.
that is hard to answer, what one will find logical someone else may not,
it will work fine, but a new system will be faster, still, it will be cheaper to upgrade it.
it will use a bit more power though, since it has a CRT screen.
I use a eMac, and I'm perfectly happy with it.
and yours has a slightly faster processor then mine.
it's up to you, you'll be the one using it.
but if you need to use windows, you should get a new one though.
there are some virtual computers that will make a virtual, intel, processor.
like Q (mac os x port of Qemu) but those are really slow.
but if not, it should be fine.
as long as you don't mind that it's a bit slower.
    also, as for memory.
you can go to a PC store and get PC2700 DDR1 memory
mine has two PC3200, you can use those, but then they do need to be backwards compatible with PC2700, since the emac simply won't work faster then that.

  • Garageband 10.0.2 too slow

hey! I have the new version of garageband 10.0.2 and it is very slow, almost in every thing I try to do the colored disk appears. My laptop is a Macbook Pro 17 inches. There is something I can do to make garageband faster ? this happens to me since I updated garageband. The older version didn't have this kind of problems. I'm on mavericks.
    Please Help!

A MacBook Pro should work well with GarageBand 10.0 and Mavericks.
Do you have enough free disk space? How much RAM do you have?
Do you have drivers for audio interfaces installed, or other audio units?  You may need to update them, see:  GarageBand for Mac (v10.0): Unexpected behaviour with Audio Units plug-ins

i have an 88.2 k 24-bit wav file that is slowing down when imported to garageband. How do i get around this problem?

You need to convert it to 44.1 16 bit. You can do that with iTunes.

  • Why do GarageBand, iMovie, Photobooth, and Hulu and Youtube videos slow down my whole computer?

I have a higher end 13" MacBook Pro running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that I purchased in August of 2010. About a month ago, I was using iMovie to edit a project when all of a sudden it started responding extremely slowly. Like, near impossible to work on my project slow. The whole computer was lagging, the mouse was unresponsive and I could barely use the gestures on the trackpad to get to different programs. Eventually the pinwheel of death showed up, and I quit iMovie. As soon as it closed, everything returned to normal. I restarted the computer to see if that would help, but as soon as I opened iMovie again, the whole computer started lagging. I then noticed that the same problem occured when I used GarageBand, iPhoto, Skype, and when I watched Hulu or YouTube videos. With all of these programs/sites, everything is running fine beforehand, but when I open them up, chaos sets in. This problem doesn't occur when I use other intensive programs like Photoshop or Illustrator, nor while I'm browsing the web. The only web problems are when I watch a video. Any video. Other than that, web pages are as quick to load as ever, and I can use the computer normally for any other task. This is seriously a problem because I use iMovie and GarageBand for school a lot, and my grades depend on me being able to use these programs effectively. All of these problems have persisted with these apps since that first instance about a month ago, and no significant changes occurred to instigate them. In attempts to solve the situation, I have cleared my cache, freed up space on my drive (I have 56 free gigs out of 320), I have verified and repaired the disk permissions, and I have downloaded the Apple provided Trojan removal tool for Snow Leopard. This seemed to work for about 10 minutes, but the apps and videos quickly started lagging and slowing down my whole computer again. If anyone else has experienced anything like this, I would love to hear exactly what has happened to you and to see what you did to [try to] fix it. Thanks for reading all of this, I need all the help I can get right now. Also, I can't watch The Daily Show or The Colbert Report on Hulu anymore, and it's killing me! Thanks again.

It's very difficult to say without knowing more about your system. There are a number of possibilities. First, your 13" lacks a discrete GPU, so the CPU is doing the work that a GPU would have done as far as decoding video streams, etc. Each video stream will consume considerable resources from the machine, and if you have multiple things running with video streams being decoded (for example, a browser with video Flash or cumbersome animation and iMovie running at the same time), then that may be a factor.
Additionally, it could be that you are memory constrained. You didn't post a picture of the process list from activity monitor or the memory usage stats, but you probably want to look and see what the memory and CPU usage is and who's consuming what. Some applications are pretty inefficient. For example, if you have iPhoto open and have thousands of images, the indexed metadata and thumbnails are all stored in RAM. iMovie pulls in clip thumbnail sets - (and worse, it has to do on-the-fly transcoding video assets from some cameras that don't encode the video using the parameters it expects to make indexing frames easier). Again, this would show up as periodic spikes in CPU activity for the app.
You seem to have plenty of disk space, that's not likely to be a problem.
Check if Time Machine is running. Time Machine introduces a performance impact, but it's exacerbated by the presence of frequently changed large files (e.g., you don't want Time Machine backing up your video projects while you are working on them).
Lastly, you may consider checking the console for error messages. This might reveal background processes that might be bogging down the system, or things like filesystem/disk errors. If there are errors in the filesystem, when you access certain portions of the disk, the OS and applications can slow down or lock-up as a result.

  • Garageband error messages and it's really slow

When I try to open Garageband I get the message:
"GarageBand has detected a possible conflict between one or more third party MIDI or audio drivers."
Then I click OK a couple of times and it opens but it's super slow. This is only been since I upgraded to iLife'09. It worked fine before. PLEASE HELP!

what audio interface and MIDI keyboards and/or Controllers are connected or have been connected to your Mac?

  • Songs are slowed down after I save them in Garageband

I am new to recording and macs altogether so bear with me. I am running an MBox 2 as my USB interface with Garageband into a Macbook Pro 2.16GHz. When I record, everything works fine and I'll save it. Then when I open it again and listen to it, the playback is much slower than when I recorded it but in the right key. I'm not sure if I need to reset the tempo or what, but I can't seem to save any song and then reopen it without it being slowed down considerably.
    Any thoughts?

I am in the same boat as you, but with a tad bit more experience. Have had an MBP for about 2 months now, MBOX 2, and do a lot of recording with GarageBand.
Something that I have come to understand is that recording software such as Garageband or Pro Tools (which I use occasionally) has to retrieve files that are on the HARD DRIVE in order to play them back, while they are being played back. Therefore, if one did not know that HARD DRIVE speed was important (which I did not), you're a bit out of luck. There are two speeds of hard drives optional on the MBP, one is around 7000 and one is around 5000, unfortunately for me, I bought the 5000, and so playback is sometimes slow, and its frustrating.
Here's what I would suggest. First, export what you have of your song that is slowing down into iTunes and then play it. See if it plays back in iTunes at the speed you recorded it.
If it does... Go to the optimizing garage band performance page and do everything in all steps. Free up any available hard drive space you can (don't delete anything necessary but do what you can)... turn bluetooth off... leave all other applications off. .... All of these steps have helped me out a ton and I am able to mix at the speed I recorded.
If for some reason your problem is different from what I've experienced, lemme know and I'll look into it.
    Peace
    Bweb
