Gcc compile for linux from terminal
Hi all,
I've usually done my compiling in OSX via terminal with gcc, using a few flags, but as of recently, wanted to build for some linux systems as well and was wondering if it was possible to compile on the mac side using specific flags instead of having to compile them on the linux boxes themselves? What I'm using now:
gcc -arch ${arch} -mmacosx-version-min=10.4 file.c -o file
I have a mac on our network specifically for building, recompiling and distribution which is why I'd like to keep it there instead of having to do it on each individual machine...
You want to cross-compile on the Mac and target Linux? Certainly this is possible, but harder than it looks, and it looks pretty hard. Personally, I would suggest building it on a Linux VM running on the Mac. You'll get the best of both worlds that way.

Run C program compiled for Linux on Mac x11?
Hi,
Is it possible to run a c-code program compiled for Linux on x11? If this is not possible, is there a way to have a linux platform runninn os 10.6.8 so I can use these programs?
I knew little about Linux or X11, so I don't know if it is possible or how to recompile the program for x11.
Thanks!Linux compile code will not run on Mac OS X, and even if you violated the Mac OS X license to run Mac OS X in virtual machine on top of Linux, the Mac environment would still not run the Linux program. The Linux program needs to run on Linux.
If your Linux program is X11 based, then it is possible to run the program on Linux and have the output displayed on your Mac. Start an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session, and run the command
ssh -Y [email protected]
LinuxPrompt> run_your_Linux_program
The ssh -Y will establish an X11 DISPLAY tunnel between your Mac and the Linux system. When you run an X11 based app on the Linux system via this ssh session, the X11 display output will be sent back to the Mac.
NOTE: Many Open Source programs have Mac OS X ports. Sometimes there are actual Mac OS X binaries, and sometimes you have to build them yourself. There are also services that will do the heavy lifting of installing a ported Open Source app, such as MacPorts.org and FinkProject.org -
Can I run gcc compiled programs in the terminal?
I compiled a simple C program in the terminal using gcc 4.0 from the Xcode 2.2 distribution. I used gcc a.c at the command line and the compiler produced a.out. When I type a.out at the command line, I get the message
tcsh: a.out: Command not found.
Am I missing a step in the comilation phase? Is it possible to run gcc compiled programs in the terminal? I get the same results in the bash shell and when using X11.
eMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.6)./a.out is correct. Your current directory in not in your $PATH. You could add "." to the PATH, but that is considered a security compromise, because an unexpected command could be introduced either maliciously or inadvertently. (I have seen this happen.)

PL/I compiler for Linux?
Hello there, I have lately found a book about PL/I that aroused my interest in that language. Now I want to know if there exists a free (as in "costs no money", but free as in "open source" would be even better, of course) compiler for that old language. I have found a project on sourceforge, but it was abandoned at version 0.0.15 at 2007 or so. On another page, I saw a compiler that was advertised for SuSe and Red Hat, but that didn't seem to be free of charge
Does anyone here know a resource for such a compiler? If you look at the CVS changelog, there was activity last year including an update to work with GCC 4.4. Create a PKGBUILD to checkout the CVS tree and see if it works.

JIT / Static compiler for Linux/J2SDK 1.4
Hello friends,
Could you please suggest a static / JIT compiler to native code for Linux / J2SDK platform? If you are using one, I would appreciate any comments.
Thank you.Ok, but if you compile a java program directly into an
executable (thats what I think he's talking about),
then its always faster than a VM that has to analyze,
etc first.mkmm... untrue....
when you want to compile into native code before runtime, then you don't know runtime variables, and you cant optimize out the ones that are for example loaded at the beginning of the program, and will never change.
but if hotspot dedects that such a case appears, that it has to run some method over and over again, just to return the same value all the time, then it may just substitute that method with the returned value....
or something like that.... (havent coded any hotspot engine yet, so woun't know for sure ;) -

Run startup.rtexe in linux from terminal
Hi,
I'm running some programs on a cRIO 9030. This rio is running Linux and it has a DisplayPort to monitor the applications.
My question is: How do I manually start the LabVIEW application from the terminal window?
I have tried "./startup.rtexe" but I only get som errors and weird looking symbols.
-Ø
Solved!
Go to Solution.I can't try it out right now, but I have a suspicion that the rtexe program is not really an executable file but rather a LabVIEW packed library or something of that sort and that it is really started up through /usr/local/natinst/labview/lvrt as a parameter. You probably can see something in /etc/init.d/nilvrt which is a link to /usr/local/natinst/etc/init.d/nilvrt which most likely contains scripts to bootstrap the system and boots up the rtexe program when enabled.
The contents in /etc/init.d/ is standard Linux bootstrap logic and allows to configure the startup of the system in any desired way.

(osx: 10.8.2)Open Source installers DO NOT mess with individual user shell initialization scripts. Open Source project may be installed on single user systems, or multi-user systems so to update every possible user's shell initialization files becomes a nightmare. For example which accounts should be updated, and which are daemon accounts that should be left along. Which shell does the user of each account prefer to use? And for some shells, there are multiple different shell initialzation files, so which one does the shell initialzation file select. And if the user already has a PATH environment variable in a shell initializaton file that gets executed AFTER the file the installer choose (.bash_profile vs .bashrc), then all the installers work would be for nothing, and worse confuse the user. And the user already has the directory in PATH, but they are not logged in, does the installer parse all the other user's shell initialzation files to figure out if that user does not need an update PATH, or does it blindly add yet another export PATH to one of the shell initialization files?
Open Source installers worry about the getting the app built and installed. It leaves the user's personal files alone, for very good reasons :-) -

Hi Alexey,
The actual code i want to compile is proprietary so will not be able to post it. Anyway the compiler gives the same error on a simple mpi file as below so i dont think it has anything to do with the code i am trying to compile. And as i mentioned earlier the code does compile and run without the -xipo flag.
------example.f ------
program mpi_test
include 'mpif.h'
integer ierr
integer rc
integer myID
integer nproc
integer nslaves
call mpi_init( ierr )
call mpi_comm_rank( MPI_COMM_WORLD, myID, ierr )
call mpi_comm_size( MPI_COMM_WORLD, nProc, ierr )
nSlaves = nProc-1
write(*,*) 'I am proc #',myID
call mpi_finalize(rc)
end

Mxmlc command line compiling under Linux
Trying to compile a large library of documents with my AIR app using commnad line and cannot get a runtime created due to
several warnings in the code - which I expected to be ignored.
Is there no way to compile and ignore warnings ?
I've tried editing the air-config.xml and using the following
amxmlc -strict=false -show-unused-type-selector-warnings=false [mySourceMXML]
neither will compile the app and displays the list of code warnings (primarily CSS)
Also it even reports an untyped variable warning for code that is //commented ????Hi,
You need to download the Adobe AIR SDK for Linux from http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=airsdk&loc=en_us, extract it and use ADT(which you will get as part of this SDK) to package the application. You might want to see http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/html/help.html?content=CommandLineTools_5.html#1035876 for checking out the ADT options and usage.
Hope that helps.

Oracle8i for Linux Release announcement
I received a copy of this Oracle marketing announcement today:
The Linux tidal wave continues and Oracle is right at the
forefront. We have
been experiencing tremendous demand on Linux since Oracle8 was
announced for
that platform last October. Over 50,000 developers have
downloaded Oracle8
for Linux from Oracle Technology Network (OTN) since March, with
the first
20,000 coming in just the first 10 days! We now have over 800
paying
customers with over half the orders coming from enterprise
accounts and most
of the remainder orders from mid-sized businesses.
This week Oracle is announcing the shipping of Oracle8i for
Linux. Already,
20,000 developers have registered for early access. With new
internet
technologies like Java and XML built right into Oracle8i for
Linux, this
release promises to be the hottest yet.
Read on for more information about:
- What are we announcing?
- What are the key messages?
- What is the pricing for Oracle8i on Linux?
- Why does Oracle care about Linux?
- Who are Oracle's major Linux Partners?
- Which products are available on Linux?
- Who is driving the Oracle on Linux effort and what are we
doing?
- Where to find more information about Oracle on Linux?
What are we announcing?
Oracle is announcing today that it has been receiving extremely
strong demand
for its Linux based products over the past quarter and is also
shipping
Oracle8i for Linux to manufacturing.
What are the key messages?
Linux represents the ultimate commodity operating system -- its
fast, reliable
and almost free! Businesses can now spend their time focusing on
the higher
value software they buy to run their businesses (such as
databases and applications).
With over 800 customers paying for Oracle on Linux, Linux is
progressing from
its roots as a student and developer operating system to a viable
deployment
environment in large business.
Oracle has the best database on Linux. With over 50,000 people
using Oracle8
and over 20,000 people registered through Oracle Technology
Network (OTN) for
Oracle8i, Oracle is the overwhelming choice for the Linux
operating system.
What is the pricing for Oracle8i on Linux?
Pricing of Oracle8i on Linux follows the standard Oracle price
list (see
http://appsweb.us.oracle.com/amapp/). Linux may be a freeware
operating
system, but Oracle on Linux is not free. Oracle does offer
developer licenses
through Oracle Technology Network (OTN) which allows developers
to use Oracle
software for non-commercial use.
Why does Oracle care about Linux?
Linux is hot! It is rapidly becoming the preferred platform for
small ISP's
and is used extensively by many of the internet's largest portal
sites. For
Oracle, Linux is the fastest growing operating system, growing at
three times
that of WindowsNT. Oracle on Linux presents customers a viable
low-cost, yet
highly stable alternative to WindowsNT. That said, with 46% of
the NT market,
Oracle is also the best selling database on NT!
Oracle now has over 800 customers on Linux. This statistic alone
strongly
contradicts the common perception that Linux is solely used by
students and
developers. Linux has already established a foothold in many
Fortune 100
companies and although deployments are still currently small
compared to NT
and Solaris, they are accelerating rapidly.
Which products are available on Linux?
Currently available on Linux are:
- Oracle8.0.5 Standard and Enterprise Edition
- Oracle8i Release 8.1.5
- Oracle Application Server 4.0.7 (40 Bit)
- Oracle Application Server 3.0.2 (40 Bit)
- Oracle WebDB 2.0.5.6.1
Who are Oracle's major Linux Partners?
Redhat Software - Linux distributors. Oracle has also made an
equity
investment in RedHat. (http://www.redhat.com)
Caldera System - Linux distributors. Novell spin-off, focus
primarily on
enterprise customers. (http://www.caldera.com)
Turbolinux - Linux distributor. Has a mostly Asia presence.
VA Linux Systems - Hardware vendor, making Linux systems.
Linuxcare - Linux support provider. (http://www.linuxcare.com)
Who is driving the Oracle on Linux effort?
There are two teams within Oracle working closely to drive the
Oracle strategy
and goals on Linux: Internet Platform Marketing and the Linux SBU
(Strategic
Business Unit).
