it seems that this bug related to i915 chip ( or intel graphic card ) is fixed in kernel 3.18rc3 mainline ( we can find this kernel package in AUR )
there is also another and complete different bug when we use a kernel 3.17 and even 3.18 ( it's a random bug ) but with a similar effect : boot can hang ( the boot process suddenly stops ) :
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189622

downgrading to kernel 3.16.x is the workaround
I assume my computer is affected by one of these bugs. While I can get to the point where my window manager is loaded, everything almost immediately hangs (but doesn't freeze). Terminal windows become non-responsive and Chromium will refuse input. It's very weird. This happens with both of the 3.17 kernel updates but not in any of the 3.16 releases (including 3.16.7).
This is on an AMD system (cpu/gpu w/ open source driver). Overall 3.17 seems rather buggy.

  • With a new tab, I get a black screen under the search bar with overlapping words of "Editor sites" & "edit" & "search". Change it how?" on the bottom.

There is also a search box that appears in the middle of the black screen. Not a regular search, but its return gave "suggestions" instead. The left bottom of the screen has like a double exposure of the aforementioned, overlapping words. If I hit the Home button I will get the Firefox search screen. But I can't pin even a normal search screen. I have no idea why this started to happen, but I think it began with the latest update to Firefox I did a few days ago. How can I get back to what used to open up with a new tab?
    Thank you for you help.

You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • More... Black Screen

My screen went black (you can still see the desk top through the black screen under light) a few days ago and I took it to the Apple Store. They sent me to an certified Apple Repair shop because my computer is considered "vintage". The repair shop did some trouble shooting and now say it's probably just the LCD inverter BUT with this model, *I have to replace the entire screen because it is sold as a unit ONLY. Cost: $500 plus.*
Is this true? Are there other options?

Here are two sources for the inverter as a used part:
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G4-Aluminum-17-Inch-Display-Inverter/IF155 -048
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Powerbook-Aluminum-G4-17-Inverter-Board-p-16669.ht ml
And here is a video manual for replacing the LCD panel, which shows incidentally the location of the inverter and its cable, but does not provide detailed instructions for removing and replacing it. The procedure for removing the display panel assembly previous to this step is also available as a video manual on the PowerbookMedic.com site. This is quite a difficult do-it-yourself job.

  • Usb 3.0 camera black screen

I am using a Basler USB 3.0 ace camera.
The first problem I am meeting is in the Measurement & Automation Explorer, the camera only shows black screen under both 'grab' and 'snap'. I changed the exposure time and brightness, the problem still remains. However, when I increased the brightness and put the camera under a light, the screen becomes a little gray. I am wondering how to solve this problem.
Second, in my Labview, I can only see a white screen in the camera area.
Here I attached some screen shots and Labview code. Hope anyone can help me!!!

Thank you so much for your hint. I checked the camera and replace the lens. Now the camera can obtain pictures now. However, my Labview program still cannot show the camera, only white screen. You can see from the screen shot. Do you know how to resolve this?

  • Black Screen with MINI and ADC Display

    MacMini OS X 10.5
    Bootcamp
    Win XP
    G4 OS X 10.4.11
    Apple 21" Cinema Display (ADC)
    1600x1024 32-bit color
    Apple ADC power adapter
Dr Bott MoniSwitch mini KVM Switch
    ADC-DVI Adapter
I just installed XP on the Mini and I'm having occasional problems with a black screen on start up or when I switch OS. When this happens, I'm unable to get video from any OS or either computer. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to power all systems down and un/re-plug the display from the power adapter.
I've seen the article regarding black screens under NVIDIA gfx cards but that doesn't apply to my case.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dave

Oh, sorry, didn't get that. That monitor was actually called the 22" Cinema, not 21". Apple had a 21" CRT but I think that was called a Studio Display, so I got confused.
So sometimes it works correctly at 1600 x 1024 under Windows (Bootcamp) and sometimes it doesn't? Is that correct? Those times when it is giving a black screen, have you considered trying to establish a VNC connection to the mini from another computer on the network? You might find that the wrong resolution is being sent to the ACD those times when you get a black screen. Though that doesn't really tell you why it's happening, it's a starting point.

  • MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB - Black Screen When trying to load games

Ok so I've been trying to figure this out the past 2 weeks and cant figure out whats wrong.
Whenever I try and load a game more my screen goes black and I can hear sound but nothing is is being displayed. I cant task manager out or ALR-TAB out. It just sits there and I have to power down my computer manually.
I've re-installed the drivers and have tried a different power supply since those are the 2 things I thought it would be and nothing is working.
Any help would be very much appreciated

Uninstall current driver in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<<. After reboot install current MSI driver: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/nvidia_33165_v7864_vga.zip
Did it twice and it still gives me a black screen when going into a full screen on games.

  • MSI 890FXA-GD65 Shutdown(fans continue)/black screen

At random times as well but usually when I'm playing a game (but not always) the computer will go to a black screen with the fans continuing to spin. Some times my CPU fan gets really loud. I had been using the graphics card and PSU in my old machine with no problems, only after I installed the new mobo/cpu/ram did this problem begin to occur.
When this problem happens I can only turn the computer off with the powerswitch on the PSU.
I saw some other people had this issue but no resolutions were given. Also there's seemed to occur more frequently, mine might go for days with no problem. Right now I'm unsure what the issue is some I'm thinking of replacing the motherboard under warrenty. I waited too long to switch it with the store thinking it might be a driver issue but after having all the drivers updated it still continues.

    1000W PSU

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 6 Core Processor 3.2GHZ Socket AM3

    Hi guys,
I have the same board and I am experiencing the same thing. Random shutdowns after a week or so leaving the computer on. Tried to change everything but the motherboard so as a last resort I am trying the following after this thinking. The 890FXA is compatible with Bulldozer and as you can't have a BIOS for every CPU they must have merged functionalities. Remember this extra Pin for Bulldozer? well it is all about managing power so in my mind I thought that:
    1) different power management with BD
    2) same BIOS
    3) same software developpers
    4) same shutdown of the computer (CPU fan still running 100%, no video, ...)
    5) same BS from MSI
So I looked into the BIOS and found the Green Power section that I entirely disabled (it also removed the cool VRM Led for the CPU but who really cares?). So far it's been 7 days that my computer is up doing cycles of encoding / decoding TV shows and I'm crossing my fingers. Give it a shot and report please... Hope it'll fix the board!

  • MSI R9 270X Gaming 4G Black Screen of Death after driver install...

So I recently updated the drivers and AMD catalyst to the newest version. After doing that and restarting my pc, it will load to the Windows loading screen, then to the black screen of death. When I restart under last known good configuration, I can start windows, but I don't have the drivers installed.  This is a fresh install, and no matter what I do, it ends in the same result. I've tried restoring the PC, and I can start windows again, but again. No drivers.  I can't find an older version of the drivers that worked before.  I'm just frustrated because I have 2 of the cards, and a quad display. But i can't use them...  After researching, I found that this is a common issue, But I can't seem to fix it.

From your post in another thread I guess you tried 14.4 from MSI site. Use latest official AMD one (14.12) instead: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%208.1%20-%2064

  • MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition (Black Screen / Reboot)

    Hi everyone !
    Here's my computer specs :
    CPU: Intel I7 870 (2.93 Ghz)
MoBo: Micro ATX from my Dell XPS Studio 8000
    Memory: 6Go DDR 667 Mhz
    PSU: Corsair HX750(w)
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bits
    My problem :
80% of my games (Crysis 1 & 2, Bulletstorm,...) & benchs (3DMark 11, MSI Kombustor, ...) crashes after few seconds. My graphic card goes off, black screen, and then my computer automatically reboot. I've tried another PSU, same pb, and my Corsair HX750 is new. So I wonder if the problem is from my graphics card or my (dell) motherboard ? But my config has the minimum required by MSI.
    My temporary solution
After few tests with differents drivers, I've try to change the Core Voltage, no result... So I decided to downclock the GPU freqs.
In order to have something stable to 100%, and be able to run all the games and benchs, i've to downclock the GPU like :
    Core Clock : 600 Mhz (Original : 772 Mhz)
    Shader Clock : 1200 Mhz (Original : 1544 Mhz)
    Memory Clock : 1730 Mhz (Original : 2004 Mhz)
    Its a big loss frequency!
Hope a new bios will come out to fix the bug.

It's only unstable when i'm use the GPU (Games & benchs), not HD videos.
Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.
Maybe i need a more accurate GPU voltage ? Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
have you tested with 1050mV for core?

normally not, but depend what exactly is unstable
But it should work fine by default as is

  • MSI Notebook GX640, black screen with games

I own for two years MSI Notebook G series GX640 (Intel Core i5-460M, Ati Mobility RadeonHD 5850, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD). Recently I had to send it to the manufacturer because of a audiocard malfunction. It was the last call to do it on the warranty. It ended around a week ago (2 years warranty). The service guy filled an information for me (standard procedure). It stated: repair the audioboard and new ventilation installed. It seems they run some tests and updated the BIOS. After that I had some time (around 2 weeks) of cool work on the machine. Until recently... Here is a description of the problem.
During more demanding programs (games mostly) the PC runes smoothly for some minutes (10, 15, 20 or so) and without warning goes black screen. Sometimes you can still hear the sound from the game other times no. Also if I unplug the power cable and plug it back it sometimes goes to a very uneasy state with stripes on the monitor.
I tried to fix this by updating the CCC from ATI, also updated the video card drivers, today flashed the BIOS using the MSIHQ USB Bootable Tool and BIOS Helper. I used the 1656_031 archive from MSI. Searched the forum and the web for info and help... but no luck. So I post here with hope for help.
I suspect this is not an issue of hardware. If I turn off the PC and start it again works fine, I was also able to upload 2GB of video files to YouTube with no problems at all. As long as I run OS (Windows 7 64bit) or programs like text editors, browsers, video editors, audio editors, internet radio etc. It runes fine. But when I start games it just a no go. To give an example: Mass Effect 3, StarCraft II, Saint's Raw The Third, Borderlands.
My BIOS information; don't know if it will help:
    BIOS version: E1656IMS.10E
    BIOS build:     08/30/2010 15:58:14
    EC version:    1656 EMS1 ver.4.08

I could assume (since you've started doing stuff to the bios) that you've done this already, but to make sure, have you checked the usage/temperature of your graphics card?
Actually I didn't do that... till now. For last 4 hours I have been running some games and programs to determine the usage and temperature on the graphics card. Here are the results:
    Temperature in house was 24ᵒC.
While normal Windows 7 running temp. is around 50ᵒ to 54ᵒC
Watching video in 720p from hard drive temp. -> 55ᵒ to 56ᵒC
    Games:
Book of Unwritten Tales (one game that is not going black screen on me), point and click adventure game -> 57ᵒC to 63ᵒC
Starcraft II -> 73ᵒC and black screen (5 to 7 minutes of play)
Mass Effect 3 -> 67ᵒC to 72ᵒC goes black screen
Borderlands -> 72ᵒC to 75ᵒC goes black screen
The Catalyst Control Center (CCC) from Ati I use is 13.1 the GPU is 625 MHz and the Memory of the GPU is 1000MHz. Fan goes around 30%.
Looks normal to me, no 90ᵒC.
Right after I end writing this post and publish it I will try to open the Notebook to at least try find any suspicious things inside. I will probably clean it, but there will be no real hardware intervention. I'm not that good with IT or electronics to try it by myself. So if any just cleaning from dust and a look inside.
P.S. There is one more test I might try tomorrow, run a game on a TV through HDMI to see if the problem will occur if it will that means it's not the display.
    UPDATE:
Seems playing games in window mode might eliminate the problem. All above test's were done if full screen.

However, it goes on the standard VGA but as soon as I install the drivers, I get the same problem ....
    What has happened?
Got NO clue right now .. drivers worked before , I haven't updated them since I installed them (3weeks ago) I have not done anything that I can think of ..
    Are grateful for answers!

I have the same problem. Updated driver to 13.11 beta was running my  MSI 2GB r9 270x for 3 days got it on the 24th and today after a system reboot the windows screen appears to load then goes to black. I started safe mode, uninstalled the ati graphics drivers, rebooted and windows booted fine. Reinstalled the lastest 13.12 driver and rebooted to the black screen again.
    Specs:
    Board: P7P55D Asus

    VCard: R9 270x MSI 2G
    Proccessor: intel i5 750 @ 2.66 GHZ
Did not overclock the video card or touch the voltages, tried VBIOS updates to fixed the screen flicker and it worked find the flicker dissapeared after the this new black screen problem happened i reverted back to the stock VBIOS the card shipped with(saved it before i updated it) reverting to the stock VBIOS didnt fix the problem only removing the driver fixes the problem, any help would be greatly appreciated.
