Geforce 7100, no HDMI sound over alsa

I've been trying to get sound working over HDMI and I'm stuck. Trying to follow the troubleshooting here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … s_Not_Work

This shows it is playing, but no sound is heard. I have tried rebooting everything like the wiki suggests, but still getting no sound.
I am using x86_64 and openbox and 3.4.4-2-ARCH
Any suggestions on what I can try next?

Have you unmuted HDMI in alsamixer?
Yup, HDMI is unmuted in alsamixer and the volume all the way up

Assuming you are using a television: is the input type (in the televisions settings) set to digital? (analog disables sound but does not change the picture)
Yes, and I tested the same HDMI port on the TV with a different PC and both video/sound work with that. With this one I get video but no sound.

  • Sound over HDMI works, but laptop sound isn't working after...

    Hey,
First, sound over HDMI was not working on my laptop, but when I followed this section of Alsa Wiki it worked.
So I created the ~/.asoundrc file containing:
    pcm.!default {
          type hw
          card 0
          device 3
But now, when I unplug my HDMI cable, and want to listen to music using my laptop built-in speakers/jack speakers, it doesn't work anymore, even if I restart Alsa.
In fact, I need to delete the .asoundrc file AND restart Alsa in order to get it work.
Is there a way to make both sound over HDMI, and built-in speakers works automatically depending on if my laptop is/is not connected to my TV ?
    Thanks

You need to restore the card and/or device number to those for your laptop speakers, as determined by:
    aplay -l
To do this automatically, you will need to use scripts called by udev, as described a little further down.

  • Solved: No sound over HDMI - HP Pavilion dv3510nr Entertainment Notebook PC

I bought an HP Pavilion dv3510nr in April 2009 (4G Ram, Vista Home Premium 64Bit).  As I did not have access to any HDMI devices I didn’t have the opportunity to use the HDMI output. Recently I obtained an HDMI TV and when I connected the dv3510nr the video worked fine, but there was no sound. Set the default playback device to Digital Output Device (S/PDIF/HDMI); this made no difference. Over many days I tried various suggestions regarding possible solutions, all without success.
Shortly after buying the laptop, I visited NVIDIA’s web sit and updated the original video drivers to the latest version (version 186.03). According to the NVIDIA, the 186.X drivers offer a very significant performance increase for many applications, and also include PhysX system software for hardware acceleration.
Checked HP’s support page for my model here, and found that the latest drivers provided by HP were version 7.15.11.7903, (Called NVIDIA NB9M-GS Graphics Drivers).
Decided to replace my current drivers with these older ones. This was harder than I expected. Downloading and running the exe file (sp41695.exe) did not replace the existing 186.03 drivers. Using the control panel to uninstall both the drivers and the PhysX software seemed to work, but on rebooting, the drivers were automatically re-installed. I also used Device Manager to uninstall them. Eventually I succeeded and again tried to install the older drivers provided by HP; this time I received an error message saying that I was “Trying to use a 32-bit uninstaller on a 64-bit system”. The program sp41695.exe initially creates a folder C:\SWSetup\SP41695 that contains several files including a setup.exe file and two other folders: WinVista32 and WinVista64. Each of these also contains setup.exe files. I ran the setup.exe file in the WinVista64 folder. This successfully installed both the video and sound drivers for my graphics card. HDMI sound has worked fine since then. Needless to say, from now on I will only install drivers etc. from HP website!
Hope this saves someone else some time.

Here is a thread and it seems like one person got it to work by uninstalling and reinstalling but I didn't read it that carefully.  There does seem to be a problem with getting a real windows 7 driver:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/Conexant-High-Definition-Audio-Driver-for-W...
Here is another thread (not HP) that said he forced the driver and got it to work:

  • Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI

*Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI*
    Hi all,
Hopefully anyone recognises the following and would be so kind to help me. I have searched the forum and tried severall of the offered solutions mainly applicable to Vista, but still.
I hooked up my Qosmio G50 to my Philips LCD by HDMI cable. Picture is ok but there is no sound. I tested the cable with a Toshiba Satelite Pro L550 and it works allright. Picture and Sound are working. But that laptop has Intel HDMI audio.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I upgraded by Toshiba update DVD from Vista 64 bit. Sadly I do not know for sure if HDMI audio did work before that. I think so because I did use the laptop for watching a movie on a Panasonic plasma. But I can not remember if that was before or after the upgrade.
Realtek HD Audio device is installed driver version 6.0.1.5923
Realtek HDMI Output is selected als default playback device.
Testing gives me graphical response ( the indicator flashes ) but no audible sound from my tv.
Choosing the other audio device Realtek Digital output changes nothing and I do not believe that this would work anyway.
I have tried removing the device and reinstalling the original drivers. I have tried REaltek drivers from their website.
I have tried changing the view to HDMI only but that does nog change anything either.
One thing that worries me is that under Sound / Realtek HDMI Output / properties / Supported Formats there are no formats present. The Satelite gives me DTS audio and some other. So I am wondering if there should be formats present and if so how can I change this / add any.
Please forgive me if there are errors in the text. I am translating this from a dutch language version of Windows 7.
Please help me. Any suggestions are welcome!

Jeka-?? & PinkPanther thanks for your replies!
The solution for the G30 you mention is not the one for me I am sorry to say. I have tried that one allready. Windows automatically switches on the HDMI audio out when I connect an HDMI cable. Connecting the cable before switching on the TV and laptop is a good thing to try because it eliminates possible problems with the connection. The connection in my case is ok.
At some point I concluded that there must be a softwareproblem of some sort.
I have found the solution over night. Could not sleep anyway. I did not know that the videodrivers are also handling HDMI audio out but in a way it makes sense. I have completely deinstalled the NVIDIA video drivers. After downloading the latest drivers and installing them everything works absolutely fine!

  • Qosmio X70-A-12N - no sound over HDMI after Win 8.1 installation

    Hallo,
I installed on my Qosmio Windows 8.1 and all driver.
Now I have a Problem with HDMI Sound.
When I connect with TV, I see the Picture on TV but don't get sound.
I go to Control Panel: Sounds and Multimedi and I see the internal devices (loudspeaker from Laptop and Headset).
I activated to see disconnected devices and no other devices will be displayed.
I assume, it fail a driver.
I installed Sound driver, DTS Studio Sound, Toshiba Audio Enhancement and SRS Premium Sound HD Plug-In.
I don't installed the regestry patch -> For what I need it?
Have you an idea to solve my problem?
    THX
    Richard
    (Sorry for my bad english)

    Hi
    >I installed on my Qosmio Windows 8.1 and all driver.
As far as I know the Qosmio X70-A-12N were preinstalled with Windows 8.1 64bit system and this OS was configured by Toshiba.
Did you install new Windows 8.1 or did you use the Toshiba system?
Did you create recovery medium (recovery disk or USB flash memory stick)?
In case you create such recovery disk, I would recommend you to use it in order to set the system back to factory settings. This should fix your HDMI sound issue.
How about other Toshiba software installation like for example Toshiba system driver, display driver etc? Did you install all the Win 8.1 drivers and tools which were released for this unit?
Missing software could be main reason for your HDMI issue

  • Asus M3N78-EM settings for hdmi to TV Alsa OR Oss

I have had no luck in getting sound to my lcd tv over hdmi.
I installed Arch and Alsa 1.020 two days ago.  I have tried various entries in .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf with no success.
I installed oss today through pacman, but had no luck there either.  Xbmc couldn't initialize the card.
I have no preference for either Alsa or oss, just something that works.
If anyone has the settings for hdmi for either Alsa or Oss, I would be grateful to receive them.
Btw, other posts have mentioned ossxmix but I was unable to find that in pacman or aur.  Ossmix is not easy to configure.

Thanks Noel, I tried it, but nothing happens.
I don't know if what's displayed in NVIDIA's panel actually reflects the current  mode of operation, but according to that, NVIDIA ia always assigned to HDMI and Intel to LCD.  If HDMI is not connected, it looks as if NVIDIA does nothing.
I downloaded the latest beta driver from NVIDIA and will try it, but I don't have much hope.
BTW, the problem is not only with Photoshop. Topaz Labs plug-ins can also run as stand-alone (using 'tlfusionexpres', Photoshop not running) and the same crash happens there, when I use a brush.

before i noticed these error messages happening in the background shell window of rdesktop, i tried to see if the problem was on the output itself, so i tried to play an mp3 to see if my amplifier was correctly pulling the signal from the arch box, and i couldnt play an mp3 either, but this may be related to smb:// errors.  i will tackle that one later.  finally i heard an error beep through my speakers which means archbox is outputting sound correctly, then i saw the error messages which is basically saying that something is tying up my audio device.
what could be tying it up?
    edit
    ok i ran lsof
    $ lsof /dev/snd/*
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
    knotify4 1527 wolfdogg mem CHR 116,3 7434 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
    knotify4 1527 wolfdogg 19u CHR 116,3 0t0 7434 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
after ending process of knotify the sound is back.  so do i check into a problem with knotify?  when i end the process, it does come back, so i wonder if the next time knotify has to output a sound this will happen again, or some condition unknown will cause it to happen again.
this could be a kernel problem correct?

In Windows XP, in "Sound and Audio Divice Propierties", in tab "Audio", in group box "Sound Playback" Default Divece is "Crystal WDM Audio".

Damnit somehow my config file I posted failed to show up!  Here it is (again) and it should show you the syntax you're trying to duplicate by putting each "soundcard" on a separate line.  See this code for an example configuration:
    #/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    options snd slots=snd_ctxfi,snd_hda_intel
    options snd_ctxfi index=0
    options snd_hda_intel index=-2
I think what the kernel is seeing is the same soundcard that's registering different outputs.  One is an analog device, e.g. card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC284 Analog [ALC284 Analog].  The other is an HDMI device that's used when you plug in HDMI cables and a suitable output such as a stero amp, e.g. card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
If I'm right you'll want to follow these instructions that I've cut/pasted from the Arch wiki Alsa page that I posted earlier:
When loading modules that are used by multiple cards (for example snd-hda-intel) it is recommended to include vendor and product identifications into options. To get vid and pid use:
    $ lspci -nn | grep -i audio
00:14.2 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) [1002:4383] (rev 40)
01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV770 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4850/4870] [1002:aa30]
    07:05.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: VIA Technologies Inc. VT1720/24 [Envy24PT/HT] PCI Multi-Channel Audio Controller [1412:1724] (rev 01)
Last numbers in square brackets are [vid:pid], so for the above example, for setting Azalia as default card following is correct:
    /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    # SB [HDA ATI SB]
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=1002 pid=4383
    # HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI]
    options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto vid=1002 pid=aa30
    # HiFi [Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1 HiFi]
    options snd-ice1724 index=2 model=prodigy71hifi vid=1412 pid=1724
Tip: To list vendor and product IDs of USB sound cards, use the lsusb command instead of lspci.
Basically you want Alsa to "see" each iteration of the same soundcard as a separate "device," in this case the analog and digital modes of one soundcard.  The instructions I pasted here should help you sort this out but if not post again and I'll do my best to help you where I can.
Finally, I have solved it by creating file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf which content is:
    # Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller [8086:0c0c] (rev 06)
    options snd_hda_intel index=1 model=auto vid=8086 pid=0c0c
    # Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller [8086:8c20] (rev 04)
    options snd_hda_intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=8c20
The problem was the order in which they were initialized at boot time. It was not taking into account the correct one.

I've already tried to comment "load-module module-suspend-on-idle" in /etc/pulse/default.pa file, but it shows idle instead of suspended. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong with the pulseaudio?

  • Why does the hdmi sound out stop working once I start using eyetv?

I upgraded to Lion and now I have a few problems. I use the Elgato EyeTV to record television on my Mac Mini. I have been using it for a few years. Now once I watch something on my EyeTV the hdmi sound output stops working and I have to reboot to be able to hear audio from iTunes or anything other then EyeTV. Why is this happening and when will there be an update to fix it?

There were numerous audio issues with OSX 10.6.8 that
were carried over into Lion and not resolved.  Issues
with EyeTV was just one of them.  May want to check
the Snow Leopard forum for workarounds, if any for your case.

  • Win 7 HDMI Sound Gets Only 2-Channel Stereo

My system specs (and advertising) state that it is HDCP compliant and has 8 channel sound, but Windows 7 (32-bit) reports that
the HDMI sound is not HDCP compliant, is limited to a maximum of 2 channels and there are no supported sound Codecs (Control panel > sound > HDMI properties).
I ran the Cyberlink BD & 3D Advisor, and my system, including the HDMI cable, passed the HDCP test.
HDMI sound works with the left and right speakers but not with the center or rear speakers.
The HDMI sound driver is by Microsoft, even after installing the nVidia HDMI audio driver.
The driver for the other sound devices is by RealTek.
The RealTek driver reports that it supports Dolby Digital and DTS while the Windows HDMI driver supports no formats.
Windows, chipset drivers, sound driver and video driver are all up-to-date.

  • HDMI Sound with Sapphire RADEON HD 5450

Hey guys, just installed Arch for my desktop computer, and I am having some troubles to get the HDMI sound to work. I have tried the xf86-video-ati driver, and I have tried to install the catalyst package from AUR, but its complaining about the catalyst-utils package even I have installed the package. So, is there anyone who have successfully gotten the sound to work with HDMI and the ATI driver? PS. I alsa have a Radeon HD 4200 on my motherboard, but are not using it.
When I use "aticonfig --initial" to generate my xorg.conf I get the following error:
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) No drivers available.
    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
When I use "X -configure" to generate my xorg.conf, it finds the screen and the driver, but sound are not working.

I have tried all of them, none outputs any sound.

    Hi.
The only easy way I found to make hdmi audio work and  on my 4850 was with pulseaudio applet (gnome-media-pulse) and the open radeon drivers (xf86-video-ati). With catalyst I can't, even in windows. Anyway radeon driver doesn't support your card yet  " http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature  ".
Before this, I remember that with smplayer I could select the hdmi audio driver and it worked.

  • No HDMI sound Windows 10 Thinkpad Yoga 12

No HDMI sound in Windows 10 on Thinkpad Yoga 12. Shows not connected in the sound panel, only video transmits over HDMI but soud plays throught speakers as it does not detect the audo link.

Update: I managed to fix it by using what brillat described here. "The HDMI Audio drivers, for whatever reason, are not installed when you install the Intel video driver. You know they are missing if in your device manager under "Sound" you see "High Definition Audio Device" - you should instead see "Intel(R) Display Audio". Download the video drivers from Lenovo.  Extract but do not install.  In the extracted folder, find the DisplayAudio folder.  Find the "High Definition Audio Device" with PCI ID Vendor 8086 and Device 2807 in Device Manager.  Manually update the driver of that device, pointing it to the DisplayAudio folder."

  • [SOLVED]No Sound with ALSA - Intel Corporation 82801G HD Audio

    Hey all,
I've succesfully installed Arch Linux. My past two attempts have met with failure, all because of my own failure to read and follow directions correctly. This time everything is installed correctly. I am running Kdemod3 on my laptop with Arch and everything works great. I LOVE Pacman and the simplicity of Arch's configuration files. It's super fast and all together simple. My only remaining problem is this:
My sound with ALSA is not functioning. I followed the installation instructions at the arch wiki and after unmuting all of my channels I still would not get any sound. My sound module is snd_hda_intel and it is detected, loaded and the whole nine yards (as far as I can tell). My user is a member of the 'audio' user group also. I looked at the troubleshooting tips on the bottom of the Wiki but decided not to try them as they do not seem to pertain to my card (snd_hda_intel) but I will try them if anyone would like me to.
If anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!:D Anything I can provide that you need I will be more than willing to provide.
Thanks for such a great distribution,
    Dan
