General Error (Save as JPG)

I've often encountered problems when scripting saving out JPG files. I've narrowed it down a bit further:
It seems to only occur when the initial PSD was created in CS5 (I'm using CS2) - General Photoshop error - not very helpful. I can get around it by effectively flattening, cutting and pasting the image into a new document. Which works fine.
I'm still at a loss to explain what is in the CS5 PSD which causes it.
Has anyone else encountered similar reverse compatibility issues when scripting?
Cheers

I'm still here; like a bad penny I always turn up
I've not encountered the problem again, although I did put in some cautionary lines of code just to get around it - like forcing a flatten - duplicating the image into a new document and saving that out. As well as a try / catch save.
Incidentally the limit of 300 chars does cause a 8800 error. I was able to save out C:\temp\a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z 0 1 2 3\a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z 0 1 2 3\a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z 0 1 2 3\a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q.jpg
but add three more letters to the filename and it's kick up an error!

  • Error 8800 save as jpg

    Hi everybody!
    I'm getting Error 8800 when saving certain PSDs out as a JPG. The error says Error 8800. General Photoshop error occured <No additional information available>
    Line:18
    -> {activeDocument.saveAs(jpgFile, jpgSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
    But, like I say, it works fine for some PSD files and not for others. I'm just not sure why though - it's not like i've included path infomation or an extra channel or something.
    Here's the code
    <code>
    // LAZY SAVE AS JPG
    var srcDoc = app.activeDocument;
    docName = app.activeDocument.name.substring(0,app.activeDocument.name.length -4)
    filePath = srcDoc.path + '/' + docName + '.jpg';
    var jpgFile = new File(filePath);
    jpgSaveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
    jpgSaveOptions.formatOptions = FormatOptions.OPTIMIZEDBASELINE;
    jpgSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
    jpgSaveOptions.matte = MatteType.NONE;
    jpgSaveOptions.quality = 12;
    try
    {activeDocument.saveAs(jpgFile, jpgSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
    catch(e)
    alert(e)

  • General Error Message Won't Let Me Save

    Hello,
    I was editing an HD video earlier and I switched my audio/video settings to sequence preset DVCPRO HD - 720p24 - my capture present to DV NTSC 48 Khz (since im not capturing. i pulled files off an external hard drive - my device control preset was on SONY HDV FireWire. My video playback was on apple firewire DVCPRO NSTC 720x480. I opened another project and switched my user settings to regular DV NTSC. when I got back on my HD video, it showed that I needed unexpected rendering. When I rendered it gave the "general error" message. I had to select each clip that needed rendering and move it a little, then re render the selection. when I went to save the project it gave me the same "general error" message. I need to export this project to qucktime ASAP to put on a DVD. what should I do? pleeeease help......
    thanks in advance.
    and am I royally screwed????

    sounds like you have some corruption going on, or perhaps a permissions issue (though I think that's less likely). Here are some things I'd try.
    Create a new sequence with the proper settings for your footage. Copy all the clips in your old sequence and paste into the new sequence.
    Create a new project with a new sequence. Copy and paste the clips of old sequence into the new sequence of the new project. Save As and give it a new file name.
    Check the pathway to your Render folder and your Save folder. Make sure that permissions allow for READ AND WRITE all the way down. In other words, if your render folder is in:
    Harddrive/FCP/Render
    Then make sure all three have READ WRITE permissions applied. Do this by selecting them one by one and hitting CMD+I for info. Then look at the permissions.
    Hopefully one of those options will help.

  • Can't save a Final cut project. - General Error

    My internal HD is at 11gig but 3 other drives are at 100 gig each.
    It started like this...
    1. Got an error when I tried to export to quicktime.
    2. Then said for me to run the "My Book Raid" configuration software but I am not running a raid. This happened a few times. Once I rebooted it stopped giving me that error but...
    3. New Error when saving - General Error.
    4. Now I can't save anything in Final Cut.
    Thank you!

    Have you tried saving your project locally before you start rendering? There is an issue with rights that could be causing the General Error message. Save your project to the desktop and try again.

  • Hi, a "General error"appears on my Final Cut Project when I try to save it. I read in this Community that the solution could be save on the desktop. It works, but how could I solve it in my External HD?

    Is the external formatted to Mac OS Extended?
    Right click the external icon on the Desktop and select Get Info.
    This will tell you the current format.

  • General Error; failed to render the timeline and failed to export HD mpg2

    I have searched for the posts if there is same issue I'm having on the forum, and it seems it's similar yet not really...
    So I decided to post one.
    I have 2100 sequential frames in jpgs. (each jpg size is 1280x720)
    I open "image sequence" in QT 7.04 with 29.97 fps, then save it as MOV in external HD with firewire.
    Then I import it into FCP 5.04 on Timeline.
    Timeline setting is
    Frame Size : 1280x720 HDTV 720P (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio : Square uncheck Anamorphic 16:9
    Filed Dominance : None
    Editing Timebase : 29.97
    Quick time Vieo Setting : Compressor -DVCPRO HD 720P60 Quality 100%
    After I place the mov file on the timeline, the Red Bar shows up.
    I tried to render the timeline, it will only try to render to 3% and stop, and "general error" pops up.
    I tried to use Compressor 2.01 with HD mpg2 preset to export out as HD mpg2 format, and it will fail to export.
    After I read several posts on here, I was wondering I might have corrupted mov...
    I re-create MOV file from QT and import in FCP5 and do the same... but I still get the same error...
    I tried to re-start computer and tried, no luck..
    Then I was wondering maybe some of the jpgs is corrupted...
    I'm not sure how to check which jpg file is corrputed since there is 2100 frames in directory.
    It is able to show all jpgs as thumbnail images..
    So my questions here.. are...
    If I do anything wrong during the step?
    If not... what's wrong? why i can't render the timeline, and why i can't export to HD?
    Or if there is a "way" to figure out what file is corrupted..?
    This is not first time I have the same problem, I even tried to test out with 10,000 jpgs frames and create mov ... and import in FCP5..etc...
    I had no problem with render and export... so I don't think it's the "HD length" issue...
    If anyone have the same issue or know what's wrong... please help!!!
    Thank you,

    I downloaded iview Media pro free trial version to catalog the image to see if there is any corrupted jpgs.
    Unfortunately, it didn't find any corrupted jpgs.
    I also tried to change the sequence setting, under "QuickTime Video Setting" from "DVCPRO HD 720p60" to "HDV 720p30" (since I found out the frame size for DVCPRO HD 720p60 is 960x720 with 59.99 fps).
    The result I get after I placed mov on timeline, it used to give red bar, it gave me orange bar... which made me be able to render the timeline without problem.
    However, Compressor still is not able to export HD mpg2.
    Then I changed QuickTime Video Setting from HDV 720p30 to "photo-jpg", the bar is now grey, but still not able to export to HD mpg2.
    now I don't really don't know what's going on.
    anyone can suggest me what else I can try and see...??

  • CS2 & Vista error when saving JPG

    Not sure its a VIsta thing
    WHen I go to save a 8bit RGB file as a JPG, I get an error that says "could not complete your request because of a program error."
    Its been working fine til today.
    Any help??
    George

    I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster.  If I create a new file and save as JPG, it works fine.  The file I'm trying to save as JPG also works fine if I do "Save for Web" instead of "Save AS" and select JPG as the format.  I can save it as TIFF too.  Only when I try to save the file as JPG, embedding the profile (and the meta data that came from LightRoom) do I get this error.
    I'm also running CS2 under Vista, in my case Vista 64.   Yes, I know I should upgrade to CS4. :-)

    Set Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. When I want to save the file in WORD, EXCEL or esporta file into ... immediately throws an error "save as failed to process this document no file was created".
    What's the problem?
    Any help in finding a solution is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Installed AcrobatXI PRO 11.0.09  on seven computers and laptops. Two of them gives an error when you try to save a document in WORD, EXCEL, Power Point, or when exporting to... error: Save failed to process this document. No File was created.
    But all good saves in the format of TXT and jpg.
    I have uninstalled and restored and re-installed and updated and registry cleaned and removed using the special utility Cleaner Tool for Acrobat, but nothing helps.
    On one notebook with Windows 8.1 and Microsoft office 2013, on another laptop with Windows 7 and Microsoft office 2010, the same problem, although there are computers with Windows 7 and Microsoft office 2010 and everything works.
    Tell me where to find the problem and how to solve it.
    Thank you.

  • Getting general error when saving site using "create PDF from"

    I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0.0 for Mac, trying to save websites. This started working fine, but I had to shut down in the middle of a site being saved. Now when I try to save a site  using Web Capture/create PDF from I get a "general error, nothing was saved". What do I need to do, remove, replace, reinstall or whatever to get this feature working again?
    Also can anyone tell me how to set the feature that saves web pages with the headers and footers showing date, time, URL, page title, etc. I often use the print feature (save to PDF) and up until a day or so ago it always saved with those headers and footers. Now they're missing, which is what prompted me to try saving entire sites, above. I remember setting these a long time ago and being able to choose what went on the left, right,header and footer, but I cannot find those settings now.
    Thanks,
    Michele

    Well, after downloading Applejack, I am completely confused. I'm not sure I understand what will happen if I do any of these steps: see 3a.. "clean out all cache files including the Launch Services database and any cached User Pictures". What kinds of things will I lose? Can I choose only the Acrobat cache files?  I don't want to have to spend hours or days resetting things as I'm in the middle of a project with a close deadline. I also don't really understand fully what will happen with all the other things they discuss.  The instructions say (I just copied and pasted these):
    3.  Auto mode: You can let the script run through its tasks automatically by typing 'applejack auto'. If you want the machine to automatically restart at the end of its tasks, use 'applejack auto restart'. You can also tell the computer to shut down automatically at the end by using the command line 'applejack auto shutdown'.
    3a. Deep Auto mode: If you want to let AppleJack clean out all cache files, including the Launch Services database and any cached User Pictures, use 'applejack AUTO' instead. Use this if you still have problems booting after running AppleJack already.
    4.  Interactive mode: To run through just one task, or to run the script manually, type 'applejack' and then choose tasks from the menu. Running the script in interactive mode has the benefit of giving you options for working with user level cache and preference files, not just the default system level caches and preferences. To select an option, type the highlighted number or letter associated with the action, and then hit return. Whenever you enter a choice in AppleJack, you will need to hit return for that choice to take effect.
    4.  Corrupted preference files are moved into a directory that will mirror the original preference directory, with (Corrupt) added to the directory name. For example, corrupt preferences files found in ~/Library/Preferences will be moved to ~/Library/Preferences (Corrupt). After running AppleJack, you'll probably want to take a look at them (and most likely throw out those folders). As of version 1.4.2, AppleJack now creates a copy of the directory tree inside the (Corrupt) folder so that if any files were deeply nested inside the original preference folder, they will be placed in an identical directory hierarchy in the new (Corrupt) folder. This way, if for any reason you would want to move a preference file back, you know where it should go.
    6.  AppleJack has a primitive logging mechanism. It writes a journal of most of its activity to /var/log/AppleJack.log. AppleJack will automatically reset the log the next time you run it, if the file should ever reach a size somewhat over 500k.

  • "Could not save x.jpg because the file is already in use or was left open...

    Win 7 pro 64, CS5.0 using InDesign 7.0.4 and Photoshop 12.0.4 x64.
    Using InDesign to create a manuscript with images. Right click on image to "Edit Original"
    Opens image in Photoshop. Make changes, go to save.
    Error message "Could not save x.jpg because the file is already in use or was left open by another application"
    Using a free utility called Unlocker Assistant, it shows that the file has been locked by InDesign
    The workaround is to then use Unlocker Assistant to unlock the image in in the Links folder, but this is a pain and it is happening too frequently.
    Putting in that error message I get no google matches.
    Anyone know why Indesign is locking the image, when it is the InDesign program that is supposed to be sending it to Photoshop for editing so it can be changed and then overwrite the original image?
    Note that it is not consistent but I cannot find any pattern to determine why it sometimes fails and other times allows the altered image to be saved.

    You will get a quicker response to post this in the InDesign Fourm http://forums.adobe.com/community/indesign/indesign_general

  • How to save a JPG in 256 colors?

    I'm using Photoshop CS2.
    1. How to save a JPG in 256 colors?
    2. Is there a way to see an image properties?
    -- I want to know if that image is in 256 color or not...

    Mary Jo, since you are a newcomer, you may not yet understand that in any given Adobe forum, there are a whole bunch of conversations going on at the same time. Each one of these is about a certain "topic", described in the title and opening post. The discussion sometimes stays right on point, and sometimes veers off a bit, and there are often quick side-issues branching off from the main topic, but still related. Within limits, people here try to keep the discussion on a single general topic. For example, in this topic, the initial issue is whether there is a way, in Photoshop, to limit the number of colors in a JPEG image to 256; there were discussions about whether this could be done or not, and alternative programs that may be able to accomplish this, and a comparison of the file sizes for 256 bit images in different file types.
    Your question, however, is not a logical outgrowth of the discussion. It's a perfectly good question, but it deserves its own new discussion topic. It's like a bunch of people have been sitting around a table discussing the merits of Canon vs. Nikon SLRs, and someone sits down at the table and, instead of joining the conversation, asks a completely unrelated question about point-and-shoot cameras, or camcorders.
    It's off-topic here, and you should start a new topic. Make the title descriptive, such as "Why does a 8 megapixel image result in a 3 megabyte file on my computer?" (assuming that's what you want to ask -- just "M" doesn't tell me whether you are talking about MP or MB). In the initial post, provide a more detailed description of what you want to know. Tell us what camera and Photoshop version you are using, and how you encountered the issue. People will see that a new topic raises an issue they know something about and you will get a response -- probably a good answer, if you keep in the conversation.
    [Edit: Trez hit "post" before I did. Trez-- I think she is using Photoshop, not Elements; she did say CS2.]

  • General error (34) ??? tried everything FCP

    Hey all, I am confused here. Before you reply note that I am not hugely tech-savvy, you may have to break it down for me.
    I am using FCP and trying to export a basic 6 minute video. The source vid plays fine in quicktime. I have searched all over for a fix for general error 34 and what I've found is...
    this
    http://www.geniusdv.com/weblog/archives/general_error_34_in_final_cut_pro.php
    which says to check the drive to make sure its not corrupted - did that, disk is fine. not gonna buy disk warrior for this one occasion. changed my scratch disk to a new folder in the same FCP files main folder, hasn't worked.
    tried rebooting the program, taking out the extra audio files, i made sure that there were no in and out points, tried putting in and out points at the beginning and the end, nothing is working. rebooted, started a new project, still wont export. i just recorded this vid in eyeTV, works in quicktime, wont export... help?

    OK, a number of comments.  Disk Warrior is invaluable and will save your butt when nothing else will.  Buy it.
    You're dealing with 2 different issues.  Editing formats and delivery formats.  h264 is not an editing format.  Convert to prores or another fcp friendly formats (look at the easy setups to see other options) and edit in a matching sequence.  WHEN YOUR DONE, export a selfcontained qt with current settings and then bring that file into compressor and choose a high quality h264 qt for your DELIVERY.    Submit that to youtube.  It'll work.  If you need more specific settings for your submission to youtube, post back.  I think there's even a "share" option to youtube from within fcp.

  • [Solved] libreoffice-3.4.1-2 and General Error opening/saving file

    I've just done a 'pacman -Syu' and had libreoffice upgraded to version 3.4.1-2.
    Now whenever I open a file (new or existing document) or save the file, I get a small window with the meaningless error message:
    General Error
    However, at least the file can be edited normally and seems to be saved okay in reality.
    Anyone else finding this problem?
    PS: It happens no matter if I load LibreOffice via the soffice or libreoffice commands; also there are no text messages shown if run from a terminal.

    Thanks to the package maintainers for addressing this bug so quickly.
    Just updated rasqal and all seems well with libreoffice now.

  • I had a visit from General Error

    Not an army guy in uniform but a very 'uninformative' error message when doing media management.
    After 20 mins of creating files etc FCP 7 just stopped with this error "general error" message. So what was it telling me? "Sorry, computer says 'NO' so you will have to go and neck yourself"?
    Well I worked it out on my own and I live to tell the tale so as to save others from suicide.
    I made a copy of my original project and proceeded to dissect the one I was working on; I deleted the second half of the 1 hour timeline and proceeded with a media manage (clips 'off line' mode) and it worked. So this led me to believe there was some corrupt files or whatever in that part of the timeline.
    So I 'undid' that deletion and deleted the first half and proceeded with a media manage and it failed. So now I knew the corrupt clip was in the second half.
    I then dissected the second half as above until I got it down to about 10 clips. From there I just deleted 1 clip at a time until I got the offending item.
    I just reworked that item and was then able to do a complete media manage creating all necessary clips, bung it on a sata drive in a docking station and into the library it went; General Error would have been impressed, I guess you could say I "sorte'd it out.
    I have had similar problems in the past where there was more than one dodgy clip but using the procedure above and a little bit on 'logic' I was able to successfully get it done.
    I hope this technique helps others more than General Error.

    Sounds like you got it sorted out. Just be glad you didn't receive a visit from Colonel Panic ... which in itself can be a Major Pain.
