Get ivi instrument handle from NISE Session

In TestStand I begin my sequence with an niSE Open Session.vi and I then pass this NISE session reference around to other VI which use the niSE Connect and Disconnect VI's to connect/disconnect routes specified in MAX.  This works perfectly for me.  How do I convert this NISE session reference into an instrument handle for specific IVI devices in this NISE Session?  I want to be able to use the "ni Switch Get Relay Position.vi".  I tried using the "ni Get IVI device session.vi" but i get an error that says VI was stopped at IUseDCO.  What does this mean?  Is it possible to do what I'm asking?
Thanks
I'm using TestStand 3.5 and Labview 8.2

Hi Chad,
The problem with the find route.vi is it just tells me if the path is available or not.  It doesn’t tell me what state the relay is in.  When using SPDT relays this is a problem.
I’m using a 2570 card set for SPDT operation.  So if I do a find route after a reset on “Com->NO” and “Com->NC” both return path available.  I understand this because I have not made a connection call to either one.  If I make a call to connect “Com->NC” the relay changes states.   The connection then returns a path exists.  My problem comes when it comes time to disconnect.  Since it is a SPDT I have to first disconnect “Com->NC” then make a call to connect “Com->NO” (which is very annoying).  If someone just calls disconnect and I try to read the path availability both return path available again and the relay has changed state.  How do I know for sure which pole the common is connected to?
If I open Switch Soft Front Panel it shows exactly what position the relay is in.  How do I get this info to labview?  This is why I was trying to get the instrument handle to the underlying IVI session so that I can look at individual relays instead of paths between endpoints.
I hope this makes sense.  I know I can’t be the first one to have this problem, so if anyone has another solution I would appreciate any help.
Thanks

  • What is the best way to open close and pass instrument handles from labview in teststand parallel model?

    I have a number of test systems that use a parallel model with labview. We have a good number of instruments(PXI).
    What is the prefered method for open,closing and passing instrument handles in teststand using labview?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    No, Below is a bit from the Session Manager Help
    Currently, Session Manager supports the following instrument session types:
    IVI Sessions—Use an IVI session to obtain the C-based instance handle for an IVI logical or virtual instrument name. NI Session Manager does not support IVI-COM drivers at this time. When IVI-COM drivers are available, you can use an IVI session to obtain an ActiveX interface reference to an IVI-COM driver.
    VXIplug&play Sessions—Use a VXIplug&play session to obtain a C-based instance handle for a VXIplug&play logical or virtual instrument name. Configure VXIplug&play names in the <VXIplug&play directory>\<Platform directory>\NISessionMgr.ini file.
    VISA Sessions—Use a VISA instrument session to obtain a C-based viSession handle to a VISA resource or logical name. Configure VISA logical names in the <VXIplug&play directory>\<Platform directory>\NISessionMgr.ini file.
    Custom Sessions—Use a custom session to create a data container object that shares ActiveX objects you create or other data between software components you write. Use the Attach and Get methods to attach data to and retrieve data from a session. A custom session does not initialize, close, or own an instrument handle. The data you share with a custom session does not have to be instrumentation related. You can create a custom session with any name you request.

  • IVI instrument handle data type and palette?

    Hi Folks,
      I'm programming a LabVIEW VI that uses the NI-Scope VIs to talk to a USB-5133. Everything seems to work well, but after calling NI-SCOPE Initialize, I have an 'insturment handle' that needs to be routed to all other NI-SCOPE calls. I'd like to bundle the 'instrument handle' into a cluster to reduce the number of shift registers in the VI, rather than route the handle through its own shift register and as a separate wire everywhere. Can you tell me the data type of 'instrument handle', and where in the palettes to find one, so I can drop it into a cluster?
    Thanks!

    Hey rogersct,
    The data type for this instrument handle would be an "IVI session of class niScope".  The easiest way to place a constant of this type on your block diagram would be to right-click on the instrument handle output terminal of niScope Initialize.vi and select Create >> Constant.  This should give you a constant of the appropriate data type that you can use to initialize your cluster.
    You can also create a IVI session control from the front panel under I/O >> IVI Logical Name.  You would then need to right-click on the control and select: Select IVI Class >> IviScope >> niScope.  I always use the first method however as it is the quickest.  This should be what you need but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  Thanks for posting and have a great day!

  • How to get access via RMI from a session bean to a remote session bean?

    I have 2 J2EE applications in two different Sun Application Servers (8.0 PE). I would like to get access from one Session Bean "SB1" into Application A to Session Bean "BrickFacade" within Application B.
    My Java Code from "SB1":
             Context ic = new InitialContext();
             Object o = ic.lookup("java:comp/env/ejb/BrickFacade");
             BrickFacadeHome brickFacadeHome2 = (BrickFacadeHome) PortableRemoteObject.narrow(o, BrickFacadeHome.class);
             brickFacade = brickFacadeHome2.create();
             Collection col = brickFacade.doSomething();
             ...I configured the remote App.server in sun-ejb-jar.xml. I found the syntax within documentation (http://docs.sun.com/source/817-6087/dgjndi.html#wp24622) but I'm not sure if I this is the right usage.

  • Get username via servlet from Tomcat session

    I have a servlet that uploads files. In order to distinguish files, I want to put the username,date, and time in the new filename (I already have the date and time). Can somebody point me to an example that will get the username from the tomcat session?
    thanks in advance,
    Chuk

    Assuming that the user has logged in to your web application through something like form-based authentication you can use:
    request.getUserPrincipal()to get hold of information about the user.
    However, if they've not logged in with your site then you'll get nothing back. Also, depending on the version of Tomcat you've got you may encounter some stupid behaviour (getting null back) if the Servlet isn't a protected resource.
    Failing that you can try getRemoteUser to try to obtain some information about the authenticated user; I've had some problems with this in the past with IIS and haven't tried it with Tomcat.
    If you want more information about how to get your user to authenticate against your web application realm then just ask...
    Hope this helps.

  • NI Session Manager gets slower and slower from call to call!

    I have the following problem with NI-Session-Manager:
    I use Session Manager a lot on my test systems. Now that I have a test system running that makes many Session Manager Calls I noticed that after a while the system gets slower and slower. Ive attached a Sequence File, which demonstrates this problem.
    This sequence file is based on the LV Session Manager Example, which ships with TestStand.
    Instructions: In the UI-Msg Field of the Sequence Editor you will see how long the actual run took to execute. Every run makes 500 calls to Session Manager. You will notice that every run takes a little bit longer than the previous. After 100 runs the difference is significant.
    Although my example uses a COM
    port to demonstrate the problem this problem is really related to Session Manager because the same happens if I use an IVI-Instrument (i.e. NI-DMM, NI-Switch, )
    Any help appreciated!

    Herbert -
    Thanks for the feedback. I will look into item (1).
    The design of the session manager was to solve the problem of only having to share an instrument within a multithread application. If the session already exists, than you get the same session and thus the same handle, and the instrument is only initialize once and closed after the session no longer exists.
    In the case of a C++ based program you would have to add the session as a member variable that has a specific lifetime. When the object is release, so will the session.
    In the case of an application like TestStand, you just attach the session to the execution. Once the execution goes away, the session may go away if no other execution is using it.
    In the case of L
    abVIEW being called from TestStand, you are using VIs as subroutines, so either the application (TestStand) must manage the lifetime of the session, or the VI subroutine must deligate the lifetime control to a "global" VI. The item you attach to the global could be the refnum itself or the SMgr session. One way of doing this would be to create a VI that serves the refnum to you but internally manages the lifetime of the ActiveX references to the Session Manager sessions. This would be a simple vector of names and their sessions. When called the VI would lookup and return a refnum from an existing session or create a new session and return a refnum for it.

  • VISA session to an instrument handle

    I tried to aquire data from TEKTDS 220. I use "set condition" to "aqu
    status",
    then "read waveform" subVIs. So there is a problem: I need to connect the
    "VISA
    session" to "instrument handle", but it doesn't work. Could you please tell
    me
    how to connect these two type of wires?
    Thanks a lot!

    It looks like you're trying to mix the tktds2x0 IVI driver with the tktds2xx LabVIEW native driver. The IVI driver has an "instrument handle" which is an IVI session, and the LabVIEW driver has a "VISA session". The two wires are not compatible. You should either use just the IVI driver or just the LabVIEW driver.

  • How to get Multiple Values for a key from a session object?

    Hi,
    It might seem dumb but I am facing a problem here with the session object. I'll paste the session object's content from the netbeans "Local Variables" window for clarity -
    Name Type Value
    hsession StandardSessionFacade #66
    session LWSFSession #69
    inherited
    attributes Hashtable #80
    [0] Hashtable$Entry "cart"=>#115
    key String "cart"
    value DummyCart #115
    item null
    submit null
    v Vector
    [0] String Full Metal Jacket
    [1] String As Good As It Gets
    [2] String Tim
    What I want is to get the values "Full Metal Jacket", "As Good As It Gets" and "Tim" from the session obejct?
    The problem I am facing is that if I do a session.getAttribute("cart"), I'll get a single value in return. What will that value be? Will it be "item", "submit" or "v"? And if I want all the values in v above, how can I get them?
    Thanks.

    None of the above.
    HttpSession.getAttribute() will return what you put into it using HttpSession.setAttribute(). In your case, it'll return an Object which you need to cast to DummyCart. Then you can access the data in DummyCart using the API of the DummyCart class.

  • How to Use AccessibleObjectFromWindow API in VBA to Get Excel Application Object from Excel Instance Window Handle

    I need to get the Excel.application object from a window handle using AccessibleObjectFromWindow. I can't seem to make the code work. First, I successfully search for the XLMAIN windows. Then, when I get a handle, I execute the AccessibleObjectFromWindow
    function. It seems to return a value of -2147467262 in all cases. Therefore, I believe that it is returning an error value. I can't figure out how to determine the meaning of this value.
    If it is an error value, I believe that one or more arguments are in error. My best guess at present is that the GUID argument is incorrect. I have tried two GUID values: {00020400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} and {90140000-0016-0409-0000-0000000FF1CE}.
    I have seen both used in conjunction with OBJID_NATIVEOM. Neither one seems to work. I really would prefer not to use the second one as it has an Excel major and minor version number. I would hate to have to change this code, if a new minor version appeared.
    The attached code has been commented to show which parts have been shown to work and which not. I'm at my wits end and really need help.
    Thanks

    I don't think you can return a reference to Excel's main window like that as you are attempting to do.
    Ref:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd317978(v=vs.85).aspx
    It's relatively straightforward to return any workbook's window in any given instance, and in turn it's parent Excel app. Try the following and adapt as required (and include error handling) -

    Dim wb As Object ' Excel.Workbook

    While hWinXL > 0
    i = i + 1
    Debug.Print "Instance_" & i; hWinXL
    If GetXLapp(hWinXL, xlApp) Then
    For Each wb In xlApp.Workbooks
    Debug.Print , wb.Name
    Next
    End If
    hWinXL = FindWindowEx(0, hWinXL, "XLMAIN", vbNullString)
    Wend
    End Sub
    'Function GetXLapp(hWinXL As Long, xlApp As Excel.Application) As Boolean
    Function GetXLapp(hWinXL As Long, xlApp As Object) As Boolean
    Dim hWinDesk As Long, hWin7 As Long
    Dim obj As Object
    Dim iid As GUID
    Call IIDFromString(StrPtr(IID_IDispatch), iid)
    hWinDesk = FindWindowEx(hWinXL, 0&, "XLDESK", vbNullString)
    hWin7 = FindWindowEx(hWinDesk, 0&, "EXCEL7", vbNullString)

    Set xlApp = obj.Application
    GetXLapp = True
    End If
    End Function
    Note as written if an instance does not have any loaded workbooks a reference will not be returned (though a workbook can be added using DDE, but convoluted!)
    FWIW there are two other very different approaches to grab all running Excel instances though something along the lines of the above is simplest.

  • How to deploy a VO Bind variable to get value from user session....

    Hello everbody...
    A JSF Page has a table based on VO with two parameters. One of this parameters I will pass by operation ExecuteWithParams.
    but the other parameter I need to pass a value from User session.
    Is that possible? How would I do that? I´m using jdev10.1.3
    Thankyou...

    When you created a binding for executeWithParams in your pageDef, the action binding should have had NamedData elements for each of the parameters. These would have been assigned values from a variableIterator up in the executables section. The parameter that gets its value from user input should be left alone. For the parameter that gets its value from the user session, change the EL expression that defines its NDValue attribute so that it references the session information that you want to use. This can be a sessionScope variable that you set earlier in the session, as Frank suggests, a property of a managed bean in session scope, or some other variable.

  • Get handle from ActiveXServer (labwindow) under Excel

    Hi, I would like to get the handle from ActiveXserver.
    I've a software build with Labwindow CVI and this one have a ActiveX server.
    In my source code, I use CA_InitActiveXServer(hinst, param_x....) to initialize the server, after that, I've different User's ActiveX server functions.
    In this server functions, I get back the handle with CA_serverGetObjHandleFromIface and it's works great.
    I've to use Excel to automation this software.
    I don't know if I'am right but I think I've to add  the .exe of my software Excel ( Excel is the ActiveX Client) . After that I would like to use the differents fonctions to automation my soft.
    My problem: I don't know how to get the handle of my software.
    My thought : When the software is launch, I can get the handle then use ActiveX server functions to automation this one.
    If anyone can help me

    I guess you try to call exe from VBA. You can google "call exe from vba".

  • Can't get IVI Power Meter error query to work properly.

    I have been trying to use the IviPwrMeter Error-Query.vi to read possible errors coming from the Power Meter.  However, I have found that no errors can be detected using this vi.  This is because the returned value 'status' is wired over to the 'error code' input of 'IviPwrMeter Error Converter.vi' and the status value will always be equal to VI_SUCCESS as the attached code signifies.
    All of this code was generated by either LabWindows/CVI and/or LabView.
    If I wire the error code output of 'IviPwrMeter_error_query' function to the error code input of 'IviPwrMeter IVI error converter.vi', the errors on the Power Meter is at least detected.
    Am I doing something wrong here or are there other work arounds?

        Ivi_UnlockSession(vi, VI_NULL);
        return error;

    Dennis,
    I get the same results as you if I don't have a power meter connected.  However, this doesn't supprise me because the session handle is probably checked at a higher level.
    The calling hiearchy is as follows (I think, because I don't have all of the code)  IviPwrMeter Error Query.vi -> IviPwrMeter_error_query (IviPwrMeter.dll) ->age4418b_error_query (age4418b.dll).  I would guess that the session is validated in the second layer and not the bottom layer where the actual instrument error query is happening.
    Something you may try.  If you have any instrument, write a simple program to get a valid handle then call the error query using the error cluster to link them together.  Set a breakpoint before the error query, run the program, use MAX to send an invalid command and create an error.  Then resume your original program and see if an error is reported in the error cluster after executing the IVI error query.
