Get real path in non servlet class

Hi,
I've created a ServletContextListener class that loads a thread at application startup and kills it and application shutdown.
The thread periodically monitors a specific file. I need to pass a real file path to the thread, but because the thread class is not a servlet, I cannot use the getServletContext().getRealPath("").
What are my options?

The ServletContextListener has access to both the ServletContext as well as the Thread.
So the solution can be to get the path in the listener and pass it as a parameter to the constructor or a setter method of the thread.

  • Retrieve ServletContext from non-servlet class

    A servlet calls a method which is located in another class which is not a servlet. Within this method of the non-servlet class, i need to access the ServletContext of the servlet that has called the method. What i am currently doing is simply passing the ServletContext as a parameter to the method.
    I would like to avoid passing the ServletContext all the time, so i'm wondering if it's possible, from the non-servlet class, to retrieve the ServletContext of the servlet which has called the method of the non-servlet class.

    Thanks J-Fine, that's a smart suggestion. BTW in the meantime i figured out that passing the ServletContext is not that bad idea, after all it reflects the structure of the app. However if i'll change my mind again i'll do like you suggested.

  • Add non-servlet class to Tomcat

    Hi,
    does anyone know, what I have to do, to be able
    to use a simple non-servlet class file in my
    jsp-pages.
    e.g.
    MyClass.class
    In my jsp page:
    <%
    MyClass m = new MyClass( );
    %>
    I was told that I simply have to put it in the
    web-inf/classes directory, but that doesn't seem
    to work ...
    Any help would be appreciated! Thanx. chris

    You need to use the "import" statement or else use the full class name. Also, some servers don't handle the default package well so you may want to try placing the class in a package.
    e.g. if class is mypackage.MyClass, it is placed in web-inf/classes/mypackage/MyClass.class
    In the JSP, code:
    <%@ page import="mypackage.MyClass" %>
    <%
    MyClass m = new MyClass();
    %>or you could use "useBean" to avoid scriptlets.

  • Read web.xml from a non-servlet class

    Hi all, I need to read the web.xml file fron a standard class in a web project.
    I know how to do it from a servlet or a jsp page, but is it possible to do from a non-servlet class?
    Thank you,
    Gabriele

    It's a XML file. So best approach would be to use some Java-XML API to parse the XML file into useable nodes. E.g. JAXP, DOM4J, JXPath, etc.

  • Problem for getting the real path using one servlet and one jsp page

    I have one tomcat machine and several virtual domains. Eahc virtual domain has one realpath in the disc.
    I am using one servlet and one jsp page for using this servlet.
    my purpose is to load, using the servlet , the real path for the domains (eahc domain has its path).
    for this i make this:
    the servlet code is this:
    package utils.ticker;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.io.File;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet;
    import javax.servlet.Filter;
    import javax.servlet.FilterChain;
    import javax.servlet.FilterConfig;
    import javax.servlet.ServletContext;
    import javax.servlet.ServletException;
    import javax.servlet.ServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.ServletResponse;
    public class Edicion extends HttpServlet{
    public Edicion() {
    public String cc(){
    ServletContext myContext= getServletContext();
    String abspath = myContext.getRealPath("/");
    //here i want to return the real path
    return abspath;
    public static void main(String args[]){
    and the jsp page is:
    <%@ page import="utils.ticker.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="tick" class="utils.ticker.Edicion" scope="session"/>
    <html><head><body>
    <%
    tick.cc();
    %>
    </body></head></html>
    But this produces one error, NullPointerException and dont shows me the real path.
    Can anyone help me?
    thanks

    i have put this into one sevlet:
    package utils.ticker;
    import javax.servlet.ServletContext;
    public class Edicion{
    private ServletContext myContext;
    public Edicion(ServletContext myContext) {
    this.myContext = myContext;
    public String getCC(){
    return myContext.getRealPath("/");
    and in the jsp page this:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" language="java" import="java.sql.*"%>
    <%@ page import="utils.ticker.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="tick" class="utils.ticker.Edicion" scope="session"/>
    <html><head><body>
    <%=tick.getCC()%>
    </body></head></html>
    but appear this error in the tomcat.
    Can you, please, help me. i am trying to solve this during one week and i am desesperate.
    Thanks.

  • Getting real path of servelet

    Hi,
    I'm trying to access a file stored on my webserver using fileinputstream but I can't find the file becuase I need to get the real path of the files location. I'm trying to achieve this by using:
    config.getContextPath().getRealPath("/")config being defined as:
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,HttpServletResponse response, ServletConfig config)but it keeps giving me the error: cannot find symbol: method getContextPath()
    Does anyone have any idea why this is?
    Many Thanks!

    However, it does exist here http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/javax/servlet/ServletContext.html#getRealPath(java.lang.String)
    So call config.getServletContext().getRealPath()....

  • Getting Real Path

    Hi..Am developing a website using jsp in tomcat. There is a page through which I can upload images to the server. Its working in my local server. I am using the following code to get the real path of the folder where I want to upload the image:
    <%@ page language="java" import="java.io.*" %>
    <%
    String savepath="";
    ServletContext sc = getServletConfig().getServletContext();
    savepath = sc.getRealPath("/") + "uploads";
    out.println(savepath);
    %>
    I am getting the path as "C:\Program Files\TSW\Tomcat5\webapps\mysite\uploads" where 'uploads' is teh folder where I am saving the images. Its working fine.
    But when I am using the site in my internet server, I am getting the path as "/home/somename/public_html/mysite/uploads".
    Is there anyway I can get the physical path to this folder? Pls help. Its very urgent. Thanks in advance.

    By your 'internet server' do you mean one you do not run yourself, but one that someone else hosts?
    If so, then the path given probably IS the physical path, and the server is running on a Linux/Unix machine...

  • Get absolute path of a servlet/jsp

    <p>
    I have deployed an application on JBoss. I need to get the absolute path of a servlet. I used following statement to do that.
    getServletContext().getRealPath("");
    but from this i get the following
    C:\jboss-4.0.2\server\default\.\deploy\sdb.ear\sdb.war\employer
    i don't know why there is a dot in between the path which is not correct.
    My application.xml is as follow
    <module>
    <ejb>sdb.jar</ejb>
    </module>
    <module>
    <web>
         <web-uri>sdb.war</web-uri>
         <context-root>/</context-root>
    </web>
    </module>
    Pls help me with this

    i don't know why there is a dot in between the path which is not correct.Me neither, but that dot shouldn't harm. It just means "current directory". Effectively that path is exactly the same as:
    C:\jboss-4.0.2\server\default\deploy\sdb.ear\sdb.war\employerWhich problems are you occurring with this? It might be worth an issuereport at the JBoss site though.

  • Bug when getting file path in non-english Windows Vista

    Hello,
    I'm getting an error when trying to get the file path of a video in a non-english Windows Vista... The code is:
    var file = "video.flv"
    var filePath = air.File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath(file);
    filePath = filePath.nativePath;
    The filePath variable is used later by a flash video player to load the video file..
    In the brazilian Windows Vista the path of the StorageDirectory would be something like "C:\Usuários\(user name)\..." but if I run this script it returns "C:\Users\(user name)\..." as the native path.
    The problem seems to be in the "nativePath" function, cause I'm able to copy files to the app-storage folder using the "air.File.appicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath()" method without any problems.
    I could insert a small code which substitutes "Users" with "Usuários" but then it wouldn't work on an english Vista...
    Any ideas on this? Is there a way to check the language of the operating system in Air so to act accordingly?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
    has anybody found a solution?
    Testcase: SQL Developer 3.1 on a German XP with default NLS Settings
    CREATE TABLE "TEST_TABLE"
           "NUM" NUMBER
          ,"VCH"  VARCHAR2(10 BYTE)
        ) ;Test file test_insert.dsv
    num;vch
    1;KL
    1,5;tz
    12345,45;ooImporting using the wizard inserts the first row correctly, for the others I get
    SET DEFINE OFF
    --Einfügen für Zeilen  1  bis  3  nicht erfolgreich
    --ORA-01722: invalid number
    --Zeile 2
    INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE (NUM, VCH) VALUES (1.5,'tz');
    --Zeile 3
    INSERT INTO TEST_TABLE (NUM, VCH) VALUES (12345.45,'oo');Beside the wrong umlaut in the message the insert statement itself is correct, because you cannot use the german decimal separator "," in the script. The bug is, that it should use the same NLS settings for generating and running the script.

  • Accessing ServletContext from non-servlet class

    How i can get information servletcontext from a normal java class?
    I am using Tomcat.
    I have put some Strings in to the servlet context and i want to get this information from a normal java class.
    I think there was a way to do it with getServlet() but this is deprecated.

    One way to do this would be to store the info in some class of your own as a static member(arraylist/hashmap or something) and then retrieve it from your java class.
    May you can populate static field i the init() method of one of your servlet and have that servlet load on tomcat startup.

  • How can I find the real path to servlet class

    Hi,
    I am facing an issue. Am in the process of creating a filter which would send a Last-modified along with the header. For this I will be checking the is-modified-since
    header and lastModified date of the file.
    The problem I am facing is that after taking the file part from the request and checking
    the lastmodified date, it gives error. This is because i use,
    String real_path = getServletContext().getRealPath(request.getServletPath());
    and it would return the path to servlet-name and not to servlet-class, since servlet-name
    is not physically present. It would return an error value.
    Is there any way which I could find the real path to my servlet class file ?

    Remember you should not take the last mnodified date
    of the class file or the jar file that contain the
    class as the value for the getLastModified method
    becouse the last modified date that should be used in
    the caching is the last modified date of the dynamic
    content that the servlet is about to prodice.
    The same class file will produce different content
    for different requests if not why do you use
    servlets you can directly use the static contentThanks for a valuable remark.
    Hence our getLastModified() often returns System.currentTimeMillis() result.

  • Getting servlet class corresponding to jsp?

    Hi,
              I'm running WebLogic 5.1, sp12 for Solaris. I was wondering if
              someone could provide me with a small snippet of java code that would
              tell me the class name, or at least path to the servlet class that
              corresponds to a jsp page. So, for example, if I knew my jsp path was
              /mypath/http/myapp/dummy.jsp
              it would be great to get the class name which, in this example, might
              be:
              jsp_servlet._myapp.__dummy
              Thanks in advance, Dave A.

    Programmatically, I don't know of a way to do that in java.
