GetContentPane() problem

Hi everyone,
I new in Swing package and for this reason, there is smth makes me confused about Swings's classes,
I can not keep the idea that why we always use getContentPane() method to add some component to the Frame container or set Layout ??
Thanks

  • Container a = getContentPane(); - Problem

    Hello Guys,
    As you can use this method successfuly on for JFrame. Is there any possibility to use it on a JPanel?
    Basically, I have a class which extends JPanel. I am trying to use this method to design the components very efficiently using .setBounds().
    However, I couldn't make it work.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Well,
    I have a class which extends JPanel with loads of components. I have extended it in order to control the frames faster. I have 3 different tabs, so basically I create the class and then pass it into Tab.
    The reason why I said efficiently, it is really hard to design the components using borderlayout, flowlayout etc.. So I've decided to keep the layout null, and use setBounds instead. However, to use this I also be using getContentPane().
    I have tried this -> Container contentPane = getContentPane(); in a class which extends JFrama, it worked fine as JFrame is part of Container. I need to use this in a class which extends JPanel only, to design the components as I want.
    Thanks.

  • Problem with threads in my swing application

    Hi,
    I have some problem in running my swing app. Thre problem is related to threads.
    What i am developing, is a gui framework where i can add different pluggable components to the framework.
    The framework is working fine, but when i press the close action then the gui should close down the present component which is active. The close action is of the framework and the component has the responsibility of checking if it's work is saved or not and hence to throw a message for saving the work, therefore, what i have done is that i call the close method for the component in a separate thread and from my main thread i call the join method for the component's thread.But after join the whole gui hangs.
    I think after the join method even the GUI thread , which is started for every gui, also waits for the component's thread to finish but the component thread can't finish because the gui thread is also waiting for the component to finish. This creates a deadlock situation.
    I dont know wht's happening it's purely my guess.
    One more thing. Why i am calling the component through a different thread, is because , if the component's work is not saved by the user then it must throw a message to save the work. If i continue this message throwing in my main thread only then the main thread doesnt wait for user press of the yes no or cancel button for saving the work . It immediately progresses to the next statement.
    Can anybody help me get out of this?

    For my original bad thread version, I have rewritten it mimicking javax.swing.Timer
    implementation, reducing average CPU usage to 2 - 3%.
    Will you try this:

  • Problem with threads in JFrame

    Hy everyone...i have a small problem when i try to insert clock in my JFrame , because all i get is an empty text field.
    What i do is that i create inner class that extends Thread and implements Runnable , but i dont know ... i saw some examples on the intrnet...but they are all for Applets...
    Does any one know how i can implement this in JFrame (JTextField in JFrame).
    Actually any material on threads in JFrame or JPanel would be great....THNX.

  • Problem with setContentPane() in JFrame class

    I recently discovered a problem with the setContentPane method in the JFrame class. When I use setContentPane(Container ..), the previously existing contentPane remains in the stack. I have tried nullifying getContentPane(), and all manner of things, but, each time I use setContentPane, I have another instance of a JPanel in the stack.
    I'm using code similar to setContentPane(new CustomJPanel()); and each time the user changes screens, and a similar call to that is made, the old CustomJPanel instance remains in the stack. Can anyone suggest a way around this? On their own the panels do not take up very much memory, but after several hours of usage, they will build up.

    I tried what you suggested; it only resulted in a huge performance decrease. The problem with memory allocation is still there.
    Here is the method I use to switch screens in my app:
    public static void changeScreen (JPanel panel){
              try{
                   appFrame.setTitle("Wordinary : \""+getTitle()+"\"");
                   appFrame.setContentPane(panel);
                   appFrame.setSize(appFrame.getContentPane().getPreferredSize());
                   appFrame.getContentPane().setBackground(backColour);
                   for (int i = 0; i < appFrame.getContentPane().getComponents().length; i++)
                        appFrame.getContentPane().getComponents().setForeground(textColour);
                   //System.out.println("Background colour set to "+backColour+" text colour set to "+textColour);
                   appFrame.validate();
              catch (Exception e){
                   //System.out.println("change");
                   e.printStackTrace();
    And it is called like this:
    changeScreen(new AddWordPanel());The instantiation of the new instance is what is causing the memory problems, but I can't think of a way around it.

  • Problem with JPanel in JFrame

    hai ashrivastava..
    thank u for sending this one..now i got some more problems with that screen .. actually i am added one JPanel to JFrame with BorderLayout at south..the problem is when i am drawing diagram..the part of diagram bellow JPanel is now not visible...and one more problem is ,after adding 6 ro 7 buttons remaing buttons are not vissible..how to increase the size of that JPanel...to add that JPanel i used bellow code
    JFrame f = new JFrame();
    JPanel panel = new JPanel();
    f.getContentPane().add(BorderLayout.SOUTH, panel);

    Hi
    JFrame f = new JFrame();
    JPanel panel = new JPanel();
    // Add this line to ur code with ur requiredWidth and requiredHeight
    panel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(requiredWidth,requiredHeight));
    f.getContentPane().add(BorderLayout.SOUTH, panel);
    This should solve ur problem

  • Problem with JFrame and busy/wait Cursor

    Hi -- I'm trying to set a JFrame's cursor to be the busy cursor,
    for the duration of some operation (usually just a few seconds).
    I can get it to work in some situations, but not others.
    Timing does seem to be an issue.
    There are thousands of posts on the BugParade, but
    in general Sun indicates this is not a bug. I just need
    a work-around.
    I've written a test program below to demonstrate the problem.
    I have the problem on Solaris, running with both J2SE 1.3 and 1.4.
    I have not tested on Windows yet.
    When you run the following code, three JFrames will be opened,
    each with the same 5 buttons. The first "F1" listens to its own
    buttons, and works fine. The other two (F2 and F3) listen
    to each other's buttons.
    The "BUSY" button simply sets the cursor on its listener
    to the busy cursor. The "DONE" button sets it to the
    default cursor. These work fine.
    The "SLEEP" button sets the cursor, sleeps for 3 seconds,
    and sets it back. This does not work.
    The "INVOKE LATER" button does the same thing,
    except is uses invokeLater to sleep and set the
    cursor back. This also does not work.
    The "DELAY" button sleeps for 3 seconds (giving you
    time to move the mouse into the other (listerner's)
    window, and then it behaves just like the "SLEEP"
    button. This works.
    Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

    I've had the same problems with cursors and repaints in a swing application, and I was thinking of if I could use invokeLater, but I never got that far with it.
    I still believe you would need a thread for the time consuming task, and that invokeLater is something you only need to use in a thread different from the event thread.

  • File and FileInputStream problem

    Hi all
    I have downloaded from developpez.com a sample code to zip files. I modified it a bit to suit with my needs, and when I launched it, there was an exception. So I commented all the lines except for the first executable one; and when it succeeds then I uncomment the next executable line; and so on. When I arrived at the FileInputStream line , the exception raised. When I looked at the code, it seemed normal. So I want help how to solve it. Here is the code with the last executable line uncommented, and the exception stack :

    One easy way to send a file through RMI is to read all bytes of a file to a byte array and send this array as a parameter of a remote method. But of course you may have problems with memory when you send large files. The receive is simillary.
    Other way is to split the file and getting slices of the file, sending slices and re-assemble at destination. This assume that the file isn't changed through the full transfering is concluded.
    I hope these could help you.

    There are too many mistakes in your program. It looks like you are new to java.
    Your add and delete row buttons are not working because you haven't registered your action listener with these buttons.
    I have modifide your code and now it works fine. Just put some validation code for the textboxes becuase it throws exception when user presses add button without entering anything.
    Here is the updated code: Do the diff and u will know my changes

  • Problem with PDFBox-0.7.3 library - Runtime Error

    Hello,
    The problem is inside the method "chamaConversor".
    " conversor.pdfToText(arquivoPdf,arquivoTxt);" make a file.txt from one file.pdf. After that it don?t return the control to "ConstrutorDeTemplate2.java", and show the following error message:
    Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-O" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError : org/fontbox/afm/FontMetric
    at org.pdfbox.pdmodel.font.PDFont.getAFM (PDFont.java:334)
    I am using the NetBeans IDE 5.5.
    I have added all of these libraries below to my project from c:\Program Files\netbeans-5.5\PDFBox-0.7.3\external:
    * FontBox-0.1.0-dev.jar
    * ant.jar
    * bcmail-jdk14-132.jar
    * junit.jar
    * bcprov-jdk14-132.jar
    * lucene-core-2.0.0.jar
    * checkstyle-all-4.2.jar
    * lucene-demos-2.0.0.jar
    and PDFBox-0.7.3.jar from c:\Program Files\netbeans-5.5\PDFBox-0.7.3\lib.
    There are no more jar from PDFBox-0.7.3 directory.
    All of these libraries are in "Compile-time Libraries" option in Project Properties. Should I add they to "Run-time Libraries" option?
    What is going on?
    Thank you!

  • ActionListener Problem - Event not triggering properly

    Hello,
    I have slight problem ith action listeners. Below is an exercise from a book on java i'm reading. I have constructed rectangle with 3 circles inside.
    When the button in one panel is pushed the colors of these cicles should change from green,black,black to black,yellow,black to black,black,red and start over.
    When the button is clicked the event isn't triggered. However when I push the button and click the frame of the window the colors change.
    I would be grateful if anyone could explain why this is happening?

    I don't in general do GUI stuff. But I can see for sure that you're never telling the system that it needs to repaint when you change state. That's why it doesn't show up until you cause an external event causing it to repaint itself, such as resizing the frame or dragging another window across the window.

  • Java application problem

    I am using JDK1.4 and working on Windows Xp.
    I have written a code for application in java as follows:
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class sample
    JPanel panel;
    static JFrame frame;
    JButton but;
    public sample()
    frame=new JFrame("frame");
    panel=new JPanel();
    frame.getContentPane().add(panel);
    but=new JButton("click");
    panel.add(but);
    public static void main(String args[])
    sample s=new sample();
    frame.setSize(300,300);
    frame.setVisible(true);
    on executing program application window has appeared and it ran properly.
    Then I closed that application window.But after that in command prompt window curser was just blinking and it was not allow to enter also.
    I have tried pressing CTRL+C also.But situation in command prompt was same i.e curser in command prompt was just blinking.
    Then I closed cmd window ;but one error has occured saying that cmd window can not close .
    My friend has told me that she is also having windows xp and JDK1.4 ; ctrl+c is working properly in her command prompt.She has written the above same code in her computer and it executes properly.
    Even though she has not written following statement:
    "frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);"
    when she exits from application window ,her cmd window gave same problem of only blinking curser.But when she press CTRL+C ; her command prompt starts responding by giving root.But my command prompt is not giving
    positive responce to "ctrl+c" when I am exiting java application.
    Is it possible to solve this problem without giving statement
    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); ?
    Why my command prompt is not responding to CTRL+c?
    How can I tackle this problem ?
    Is there any other key which can be used in command prompt of Windows Xp?

    Is it possible to solve this problem without giving
    statement
    frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    ?this is because Swing have started some non-daemon helper threads for its internal purposes and the default close operation for frame is just HIDE_ON_CLOSE. So, the system will not exit because those non-daemon thread still not terminated.
    What is the problems setting the default close operation to JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE ?

  • Java Swing application problem in Windows vista

    The look and feel of the swing components are displayed improperly.
    Do we need to put any specific look and feel for windows vista environment or any specific hardware configuration is required to setup windows vista environment.
    Please give some inputs to solve the problem.
    We have tried with the following sample code to run in windows vista.

    When we execute the Swing application in windows

    The look and feel of the swing components are
    displayed improperly.Improperly means what? You must be aware that Vista's native L&F certainly isn't supported yet.

    Hi ive created a program using jframes in Java and im wanting to move it over to java 3d but im having problems. Ive litterally just looked at java 3d so my knowledge is limited. All i want is to set up my canvas so that i have a Jframe panel on the right and a 3d ball on the left. Here's my failed attempt......

    Hi tesla66 I'm sorry if I didn't correct your code, but drop some new code trying to solve the problem. I've used the cube instead the sphere because it's easier to see is rotating but just change "new ColorCube(0.4f)" with " new Sphere( 0.4f )". I wrote even some coments tought they're helpful. Tell me if I solved the problem
