Getting a list of distinct values

Hello,
I'm using Toplink named queries with an sql-expression (in JDev Studio 10.1.0.3.) but I'm having trouble to get distinct values.
I want to create a dropdown list containing all pricerange possibilities, the basic data comes from a table with following format:
PRICERANGE_ID -- ACTIVITY -- PRICE
LOW--------------------- Analysis ---- 65
LOW -------------------- Training ----- 75
MEDIUM -------------- Analysis ---- 75
MEDIUM -------------- Training ----- 90
HIGH ------------------- Analysis ---- 85 etc.
I have now created a TopLink named query, type: ReadAllQUery,
SQL statement: select pricerange.PRICERANGE_ID from pricerange
group by pricerange.PRICERANGE_ID
order by pricerange.PRICERANGE_ID
and PRICERANGE_ID is part of the primary key of pricerange (but I don't expect this to be a problem)
Now, when I use this query to get the values in a dropdown list, I don't get any values as a return. I have tested in pure SQL (using TOAD) in which I was able to get the correct value for each record.
My guess is that is some problem with defining row names in this TopLink query. Since I ask only to select the data of one column, but when I want to create a dropdown list I get a list of all fields in the original table.
Can you limit the selection to certain fields or columns in a TopLink named query ? Are there other options ?
I have posted this question on the Toplink forum and did get the suggestion of Doug Clarke to use a ReportQuery instead of a ReadAllObjects query, but it's still not clear to me where and what I should do.

Hi Ankit,
Is there any particular reason that the values need to be shown in a list view web part? Are you going to use that web part for filtering via web part connections?
I ask because the enterprise site collection features include the SharePoint List Filter web part, which may accomplish what you're looking for.
If you just need to display the values in a grid view, you might have more luck with the JavaScript Client Object Model. Try putting the following in a text file:

Upload the text file to a library on the site, then add a content editor web part to a page where you want the distinct values to appear. In the content editor web part's properties, edit the Content Link so that it links directly to the text file. This
will cause the JavaScript to run on the page.

By using this query, I am getting a dataset which includes all the columns of sharepoint list. Among these columns, I wanted to display only 2 columns (i.e Region and Sales type) using chart. I have created a Region parameter but when I click preview, the drop down box is giving me all the repeatative values of region like RG1,RG1,RG1,RG2,RG2,RG2,RG2,RG3.......... I wanted to display only distinct values of Region parameter so that whenever end user select region from the parameter drop down, it will display the respective value of Sales type column.
Also when I select only RG1 parameter, it is giving me a chart including the sales type of all the Regions. (it should display me only the sales type of RG1) How can I link these 2 columns so that they will display the values respectively.
          I would really appreciate if anyone can help me out with this.

By code, the CAML language doesn’t have any reserved word (or tag) to set this particular filter to remove duplicate results.
In this case, we could use the custom code to get distinct records.
Here are the detailed steps:
1.         Create a hidden parameter that gets all the records in one field.
Note: Please create another dataset that is same of the main dataset. This dataset is used for the parameter.
2.         Create a function that used to remove the duplicate records.
Here is the code:

4.         Go to the main dataset. Open the property window of this dataset.
5.         In the “Filters” tab, set the filter to be:
Expression: <The field to be filter>
Operator: =
Value: =Parameters!Region.Value
The parameter “Region” should be the parameter we created in the step3.
Now, we should get distinct values of SharePoint columns.

SSRS 2012: How to get a "Select All" that returns NULL instead of an actual list of all values from a multi-select parameter?

I have a multi-select parameter that can have a list of thousands of entries. In general, the user will pick a few entries from the list or "Select All". If they check "Select All", I would much prefer that I get a NULL or an empty string
instead of a list of all values. Is there any way to do that?
In experimenting with a work-around, I tried putting an "All" label with a null value in the list, but it is ignored (does not display in the drop-down). If I use an empty string for the value, my "All" entry does get displayed, but so
does "Select All", which is confusing. Is there a way to suppress "Select All"?

To get a null value instead of the full list of all values when "Select All" is chosen:
1) Add a multi-value parameter "MyParam" that lists the values to choose.
2) Add a DataSet "ParamCount" identical to the one used by "MyParam", except that it returns a single column named [Count] that is a COUNT(*) of the same data
3) Add a parameter "MyParamCount", set it to hidden and internal, then set the default value to 'Get values from a query', choosing "ParamCount" for the Dataset and the one [Count] column for the Value field.
4) Change the parameter for the main report DataSet so that instead of using [@MyParam], it uses this expression:

Parameters!ParamCount.Value, Nothing, Join(Parameters!MyParam.Value, ","))

How to get the list of values for a dynamic parameter using Web Services SDK?

I was not aware that this is not supported by Web Services SDK.</p><p>We used Web Services SDK to integrated the Crystal Reports in our web application. We implemented some basic actions for reports: schedule, view instances, run ad-hoc reports.</p><p>We encountered this problem when trying to run/schedule reports with dynamic parameters (a list of values from DB). Are you trying to fetch data from Dimension Attr OR Fact Measures? Did you try the advance tab - > Advanced SQL Clauses - > Check this box to issue an explicit Select Distinct.

Please check the Key Attribute combination in the Source System and Create Attribute view with the same combination.
so that you won't get any duplicate values.
If you are taking fields randomly Pls ensure that you are taking at least one primary key combination use the same combination while creating Attribute View.
As u know that the purpose of Attribute view is to store the Master Data Objects like BI/BW which stores Non duplicate values.

May I know what is purpose of this requirement, as olaf said,you may parse the T-SQL code (or the execution plan), which is not that easy.
I have noticed that the condition values in your Stored Procedure(SP) are hard coded and among them there is a date values, I believe some day you may have to alter the SP when the date expires. So why not declare 3 parameters of the SP instead hard coding?
For multiple values paramter you can use a
table-valued parameter. Then there's no problem getting the values.
If you could elaborate your purpose, we may help to find better workaround.

Getting distinct values

I have a table storing username,login_date. I need to retreive
username and the last login date of all the users. So I issued the
query
select distinct(username),max(login_date) from login_log group by username,login_date;
but the above returns duplicate usernames ..i.e.. the usernames
are repeated..
How to solve this ?

GROUP BY username, login_datemeans "make one row of output for each distinct value of *the combination of* username and login_date.
You want just one row pt output for each distinct value of username, without reference to any other column, so don't mention any other column in the GROUP BY clause

Per my understanding you have create an SSRS report with SharePoint list, now you don’t know to create the distinct parameters by using CAML query, right?
For the CAML language doesn’t have any reserved word (or tag) to set this particular filter to remove duplicate results, but we can use the custom code to do this function. I have tested on my local environment and we can do that by create one hidden parameter(Param1)
to get all the values from the fields which will add the filter and then create another parameter(Param2) to get the distinct values based on the Param1, we use the custom code to do the deduplication.

Count distinct values current group

Hi--
Is there a way to count the distinct values within the current group? ie--i've got a PO and want to display all the addresses at the shipment level if there is more than one distinct one, but if they are all the same as the header-level address, then I don't want any of them to show up.
I'm using the following at the header level to tell the header not to show up if there are multiple shipment level addresses, but can't seem to get a similar statement to work when it's sitting at the same level as the group that I want to count.

New version and distinct-values

Does the new version include improvements to speed up the distinct-values function?
As a review from ancient history (July), I need to look through thousands of small documents, each with one or more category tags, and generate a list of used categories. This took a very long time to do, and it was determined that the distinct-values function didn't used indexes. Further, we came to a lose conclusion that there was really no way to get decent speed out of this query with the current implementation.
At the time George also mentioned the possibility of future index manipulation methods that could avoid touching the documents at all, pulling the values out of the index itself.

The new release has an improved distinct-values() function, that uses an O(n log n) algorithm instead of an O(n^2) one. However, it still does not use indexes to optimise it's performance.
It may well be worth you checking it out. If you do, please let us know how it went for you.
