Getting started - ORA-01031 deployment Error

Hi,
I am new to Oracle and Oracle Warehouse Builder and I am reading through the Book "Oracle Warehouse Builder 11g: Getting Started"
I have reached the final chapter where I need to deploy and execute my project. In the book an External table is setup to get some data to a store dimension. When I deploy the File location to this external table I get ORA-01031 Insufficient priveleges - what is wrong and how can I resolve it? Since I am very new to this I would appriciate a step-by-step solution.
Kind Regards,
Søren
Edit: I am using 11gR2 even though the book is written for 11gR1

Hi Søren
If you are using 11gR2 then the 'CREATE ANY DIRECTORY' privilege was revoked from the OWB user role, to tighten security. For demo purposes you can grant this privilege to the target user from sys;
GRANT CREATE ANY DIRECTORY to YOURUSER;
The production-ready secure way would be for the dba to grant you read/write privileges on an existing SQL directory object and you can reference this from OWB (in the connector from the Oracle location to file location).

  • Using database-link in view to get around ORA-01031 error

    I have been granted select rights on a users table. I am therefore able to select from his table. If however I try create a view against his table I run into the ORA-01031 problem. I have worked around this problem by creating a database-link to myself and then adding that to the view creation and it works. What are the downsides of using the database-link in this way?

    The only down side I have been able to identify is that a extra session is created and that the CPU has a little extra work due to the LOOP BACK that takes place. I need to ensure the network is not unnessesarly used and therefore will need to ensure that 127.0.0.1 (local host) is used in the database connection discription. e.g.
    create database link my_db_link connect to scott identified by tiger using '(description=(address=(protocol=tcp)(host=127.0.0.1) (Port = 1521) ) (connect_data= (sid=ora10g)))';

    Problem - Java process throwing java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges for simple select statement select * from MYTABLE , table having only three rows

I did same select from sql developer using same credential, I get same ORA-01031: insufficient privileges error in sql developer too BUT ONLY if I create new connection. (Disconnect and connect again), If I fire same query again in same connection it runs fine.
    SELECT * FROM MYTABLE;

  • Getting ORA-01031 when attempting to Create Database

    I am attempting to issue a CREATE DATABASE statement via JDBC but I am getting a "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" error. I am logged in as an administrator and I have no trouble creating tables. I am also receiving the same error when attempting this from SQLPlus. I'm stumped.
    Thanks,
    Pino

    Pino,
    I haven't verified this, but only the SYS user can create a DATABASE in Oracle, and you also need to use a special login (when going via SQL*Plus) which JDBC cannot handle. Hence your failures both via JDBC and SQL*Plus.
    By the way, if you are new to Oracle, but have experience in another database, then the Oracle idea of a DATABASE is probably different than what you're used to. That's probably why you're stumped. If you haven't already done so, I suggest reading the Oracle Database Concepts volume of the Oracle documentation, which is available from:
    http://tahiti.oracle.com
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Getting ORA-01031: insufficient privileges with underlying code

    Any hlp welcome,
    I'm using this function to create user's
    CREATE OR REPLACE function create_user_from_asdb
    (p_user IN VARCHAR2,p_wachtwoord IN VARCHAR2) return VARCHAR2
    as
    sql_stmt VARCHAR2(100);
    v_message     VARCHAR2(2000);
    begin
    sql_stmt := 'create user :1 identified by :2 DEFAULT TABLESPACE :3 TEMPORARY TABLESPACE :4';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_stmt USING p_user, p_wachtwoord,'TS_USER_DATA','GRP_TS_TEMP';
    v_message := 'Gebruiker '||p_user||' met wachtwoord '||p_wachtwoord||' aangemaakt';
    return v_message;
    exception
    WHEN OTHERS then
    v_message := sqlerrm;
    return v_message;
    end;
    But when run by SYSTEM (who ownes this function) I get the ORA-01031. Whats wrong here? The function will later be called through a dblink by a user on a different dbase.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi !
    It's not a good idea to grant CREATE USER privilege directly to a schema and to create a function to create user's, because anyone on your database who own the CREATE ANY PROCEDURE or EXECUTE ANY PROCEDURE can also create users on your database. Issshhh !
    To solve this problem, you can add AUTHID CURRENT_USER to your function :
    CREATE OR REPLACE function create_user_from_asdb (p_user IN VARCHAR2,p_wachtwoord IN VARCHAR2) return VARCHAR2
    AUTHID CURRENT_USER
    as
    sql_stmt VARCHAR2(100);
    v_message VARCHAR2(2000);
    begin
    sql_stmt := 'create user :1 identified by :2 DEFAULT TABLESPACE :3 TEMPORARY TABLESPACE :4';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_stmt USING p_user, p_wachtwoord,'TS_USER_DATA','GRP_TS_TEMP';
    v_message := 'Gebruiker '||p_user||' met wachtwoord '||p_wachtwoord||' aangemaakt';
    return v_message;
    exception
    WHEN OTHERS then
    v_message := sqlerrm;
    return v_message;
    end;
    With AUTHID CURRENT_USER, a stored procedure runs with the rights of the caller, not with the rights of the procedure's owner. So there's no need to grant system privilege to the owner...
    You only need to grant execute on your function and CREATE USER via a role or not to the users you want to be able to create users remotely (via dblink), or not.
    Hope it helps.

  • ORA-01031 WHEN CONNECTING TO AUXILIARY DATABASE

    Hi
    i am currently trying to to create a standby database using RMAN using the ORACLE RMAN Backup and recovery book.
    I get the ORA-01031 when i connect to the auxiliary database.
    i do the following:
    RMAN> connect target sys/password@primary
    connected to target
    RMAN > connect auxiliary sys/password@aux1
    ORA-01031.............insufficient privileges
    obviously the database aux1 hasnt been created yet but i have configured the tns and listener and both work fine, also created a password file and created a pfile from the spfile in the primary database as instructed by the book. I also started the aux1 database in nomount mode as well.
    does any one have any ideas where i maybe going wrong?
    thanks

    conn sys/pwd@aux1 as sysdba ,what happens to this
    in sqlplus
    add an entry to your TNSNAMES.ora
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)

  • ORA-01031 Unsufficient privileges

    Hello,
    I'm facing a weird issue.
    When logging with a specific user onto sqlplus, i'm able to issue a request which give me output.
    However when the very same request is issued from the web server i get the ORA-01031 error.
    I'm running Oracle 11.2.0.1.0.
    Regards,

    Ok, hereunder some more details:
    On the Dtabase itself:
    sqlplus TSTR@oratest
    select ORGANIZATION_CODE, ORGANIZATION_NAME, ROOT_ID, ACCOUNT_NUMBER, STATUS_CODE, EXTERNAL_ID, ORGANIZATION_TYPE, SITE_ID, GDS_BUSINESS_PROFILE, COMPANY_RESOURCE_ID, COMPANY_RULE_ID, COM_COMPANY_RESOURCE_ID, COM_COMPANY_RULE_ID, LOGO_URL, BILLING_ACCOUNT_ID from COMPANY_ORGANIZATION where COMPANY_ORGANIZATION_ID = 1 and EXPIRY_DATE is null ;
    And it works.
    On the web server:
    Pool is configured for the jboss using the very same information, configuration is done like this:
    <Resource name="tstrPool" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource" maxActive="20" maxIdle="3" maxWait="20" username="TSTR" password="password" driverClassName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver" url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@ip:1521:oratest"/>
    The same request is issued, and we get ORA-01031 error.
    If i tried once more on the db itself, the request is still workable...
    After some investigations, i found that when the error is raised through the web server, i'm not able to kill TSTR session on the db anymore.
    Restarting the database solved the problem for the web server, but i know that will not last long.
    Any insight?

  • ORA-01031 when connecting as sysdba after upgrading DB 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3

    Hello everyone
    I have just finished upgrading my development database from 10.2.0.1.0 to 10.2.0.3.0. I have also upgraded my workstation client software to 10.2.0.3.0. Everything appears to be working fine except that I can no long access the new database "as sysdba" from my client computer. Each time I try to login using sys/password@mydb as sysdba I get an ORA-01031: Insufficient privileges error.
    I have no problem connecting to the database using any other normal user. I can connect using "/ as sysdba" from the server console and I also have no problem accessing my production database -- which is still 10.2.0.1 using the 10.2.0.3 drivers. The server is running SLES9 while my workstation runs openSUSE 10.2.
    Any help will be most welcome
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanassis.

    Ensure you have your password file inatct (recreate it if necessary).

    Is it a serious issue of database.

    If you kill the sessions using the tempfile, or restart the database you may be able to drop it. Or you could try to shrink the tempfile instead of drop.
    Not sure why you are doing that though ? If the temp tablespace is full, check what is using the space, or add another tempfile to the tablespace.No I am not killing the sessions... But i just checked using following query that some users are using the temp Tablespace at that time. But i did not kill any session.
    select 'alter system kill session '''||a.sid||','||a.serial#||''' immediate;'
    from
    v$session a,
    v$sort_usage b,
    v$process c,

    and
    a.saddr = b.session_addr
    and
    a.paddr = c.addr
    and
    b.tablespace='TEMP'
    and
    a.status='ACTIVE'
    order by
    b.tablespace,
    b.segfile#,
    b.segblk#,

  • ORA-01031: No message file for product=RDBMS, facility=ORA

    Hello,
    i run instance and get message:
    ORA-01031: Message 1031 not found; No message file for product=RDBMS,
    facility=ORA
    what can i do for solving that problem?
    regards
    Denis

    I assume you run under Windows:
    Check environment variable ORACLE_HOME and environment Variable Path.
    Path looks something like:
    PATH=c:\oracle\XXX\920\bin;<someother minor important oracle DIRs>;c:\windows;c:\windows\system32.......
    ORACLE_HOME looks like:
    ORACLE_HOME=c:\oracle\XXX\920    (without \bin!!!!)
    If you have installed more than one Oracle_home following is important:
    Your Path variable looks like following:
    PATH=c:\oracle\xx1\920\bin;c:\oracle\xx2\102\bin;c:\windows;c:\windows\system32;....
    if your ORACLE_HOME points now to c:\oracle\xx2\102 then you run in the problems you have documented.
    you have to remove oracle\*\bin references from System environment and have to move them to the userenvironment of the affected users:
    1. remove c:\oracle\xx1\920\bin;c:\oracle\xx2\102\bin; from system environment variable PATH
    2. modify xx1adm's environment variable PATH to include c:\oracle\xx1\920\bin
    3. modify xx2adm's environment variable PATH to include c:\oracle\xx2\102\bin
    Important:
    The first %ORACLE_HOME%\bin directory in PATH must be identical with %ORACLE_HOME%

              return month;
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
    String cmd = e.getActionCommand();
    }

    First, the code you posted was mangled by the forum formatting software. When you post code, select it and click the CODE button above the typing area, which will prevent that, and maintain your formatting.
    When you ran the appletviewer program from the cmd window, error information was posted to it by the java command. Did you look at it? It says that you have a NullPointerException at this line
    add(b2);because there's a typo in this line
    b1 = new Button("Exit");which should have assigned a value to b2, not b1
    Read and understand the error messages that java creates, they almost always point exactly at the problem and allow you to debug the cause.

  • Ubuntu linux - ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

    hi all
    I have oracle xe running on ubuntu linux without any apparent problems until I try to connect like this
    sqlplus / as sysdba at which point I get the ORA-01031: insufficient privileges message.
    I have tried as root, as oracle (su oracle) and as a user who has membership in the dba group.
    I have even set all the privileges on the oracle directory (chmod -R 777 /usr/lib/oracle) but all without success.
    Would really appreciate some help on this as I am trying to configure the RMAN backup utility and need to set
    XE to operate in archivelog mode so I can do online backups.

    If you've switched to the oracle user (use $ su - oracle # to get a "brand new" environment, not the plain $ su oracle) and have the environment variables set, you shouldn't be seeing the ora-1031 unless something has gone astray with the passwd/group files for the local users.
    What's the ubuntu version, anything real recent? Something might be a bit different/newer with the OS user setups, not sure what that might be, but the oracle user should always be able to conn /as sysdba since that's the account that owns the software install.
    Verify the group membership, and a long list of the /usr/lib/oracle shows oracle dba for owner and group, and `id` and `groups`for the user shows the right info. If not in an oracle term session maybe a `newgrp dba` might be needed too.
    Or maybe something unusual in the sqlnet.ora (like SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS), or (NONE) could break the OS authentication) ...
