Getting the n900

Guys i should be getting the n900 in two weeks, it seems like the best phone in the market, but i have a few questions, first i live in lebanon, so will my n900 gets fm transmitter enabled ?? And guys i don't know anything about flashing the device, or x-terminal, or anything like that (new to linux), so is the n900 the best phone for me??? I'm fine with the normal things o n the n900, but i'm not a hacker (now i own an e75 ), did any e-series guy upgraded to the n900 and had any problems ?? And one last thing , will installing apps from the devel and the extra devel.... In the app manager cause any damage to the n900 's software.

Guys i did my search and i love the n900 from the reviews and the youtube videos, i don't mind one profile anyway i use two, normal and silent (the n900 has them ), and contacts groups, ringtones...... Don't mean anything for me, and i don't have any problem with 12 hours battery life, in fact, thats great for me. I have an e75 so i'm in landscape mode almost all the time so no problem their two. Anyway what kind of hacking can u do with the n900 1-is it hacking websites and getting free stuff from the web ? 2-is it hacking e-mails and facebook profiles ? 3-or is it hacking the phone to take full control of it ?? . Now i may have a problem with apps, i'm more than fine with the number of apps that u can get from the app manager after enabling the maemo (devel, ....) to get tons of more apps, but i heard that these apps are beta and will cause damage to the phone, is that true ?? Or some of the apps ar a bit luggy and thats all ?? thanks for ur help guys. Ps : i wrote from my e75 using opera mini 4, and now the opera mobile 10 is aviable on the n900.

  • How do you get the N900 secondry camera working??

I've just got my N900 and wanted to know if you can use the secondry camera as a webcam on skype or not? Also can you download msn messenger or similar and still use the webcam?
    Thank you
    Alan

Have a look at this thread
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=maemo&thread.id=765
There is a full MSN client called amsn, but I recommend against using it at the momen, mainly because it is not optimised for Maemo5 on the N900 and could cause problems with file systems filling up..
You can use telepathy-haze to integrate MSN, AIM and others into the built in conversations and contact apps.. It's seamless..

  • Help me get the most of my N900

    Hi,
I've slowly grown to like my N900 more and more over the months I've had it. I wish I had more time and know how to get creative on it, but for now there a few quirks that prevent me from getting the most out it.
    1. media player
Is there any media player that will allow you to go from shuffle to the album that the song is from, like you can in ipod? I basically need inspiration from shuffle to decide what to listen to and miss it on my n900. Going back to find it manually is too laborious. Just downloaded instinctive and it doesnt seem to handle that. Also in portrait only which is no good for me!
    2. google search
If I do a search from the address bar, it nearly always gives me results from google.fr. Dunno why this could be.
    3. Sygic Mobile Maps
I love Sygic. I often use it with music running at the same time. I got the update (including full screen) before I reflashed and then updated to latest maemo. I dunno how to get the update again, but when I do I really need to know how to minimise and get to other programs by only using the screen. This didnt seem to be possible with full screen and changing music while using maps on my bike is pretty lethal otherwise!
Also wondering how to not have sygic sound files in my media player. I dont really need to be given random directions in mandarin chinese while I'm trying to navigate the countryside. Not that I'm actually gonna understand it !
    4. Lastly as an honorary angry bird, I demand more levels immediately!
    Any help would be great!
    P

If you don't want the sound to be added into your media player then
you'll have to change the path of /home/user/MyDocs/Res to /home/user/MyDocs/Private/Res
i.e. Create a folder called Private in MyDocs and move Res into it.
after Moved Res folder to Private Folder.
      Edit the file MyDocs/Drive/Maemo/setting.ini . . [Settings] showSafetyMsg=false ;DPI=96 DPI=220 ;IconSize=3 processing=fribidi PositionFiltering=true colorMode=RGB565 showSafetyMsg=true ResourcePath=/../../Private/Res
Done now there won't be any .wav file from sygic in your media player anymore.
hoe this helps, i found it on talk.maemo.org , credit to the poster maxximuscool
As for the problem, to go back to the task manager while u r using sygic in full screen mode, install the app CAMKEYD from the app manager, and itll enable u to just push the camera button halfway and that'll bring up the task manager or u can use the other option by using keyboard shortcuts, i dont like to keep on opening my keyboard again and again,
    hope this helps.

  • Custom meego ui on the n900 !!!!!!

Yes !! the digia custom meego ui running on the n900, thats right, not meego, a meego with the awesomest (if thats a word) custom ui i've ever seen .
remember your looking at one months work by a single developer, its obviously nowhere near a finished or usable state, but the potential for alternative UI's is promising and this concept UI looks awesome.
and don't forget that levono tablet in the video has more hardware specs than the n900 .
but this is one months, yes more to come, man do i love this device or what .
anyway here is the VIDEO .

dude you can run multiple ui's, they are like themes, look its like nitdroid on the n900, you can get it to load the htc sense ui, samsung touchwizard......

  • The n900 can't die, it can do everything

Well alots of you guys lost hope in the n900, after everyone said that nokia "killed" it, really ??? look where the device is now,
you can get android 2.2 via nitdroid, you can overclock to 1 ghz in a push of a button, you can have up to 9 homescreens with desktop+,you can watch most of the flash 10 animations and videos on the web using 'tweak flash version', you can remotly control your pc via vnc viewer
, you can have remote xp !! via rdesktop, you can jailbreak your ps3 using your n900, you can run like 6 OSs on the same device (froyo, windows98, mac os, ubunto, eclair, donut, debian...),you can have extreme speed with the custom transitions in the blac plastic theme, you can do voice guided navigation with modtana, you can control your tv with irreco, .... and this is only a strat or an introduction to what can device really do,
the n900 is like 2pac, they killed him too soon, but we all listen to the 2pac rap, now after 16 years of his death,, most of the people still thinks that he's the best rapper ever, so is the n900, best smartphone/computer/tablet/thingy ever .
long live maemo5 and the mighty n900, it can do everything...

I wouldn't go as far as to say the best phone ever made..... not now. 6 months ago, maybe.
A lot of manufacturers have taken some of it's best features and only slightly improved on them. The screen for instance.... The iPhone 4 screen is actually only another 32 pixels per inch more than the N900, and others are still trying to beat the resolution but ending up with devices that could double up as surf-boards.
The web browsing, despite Flash 10.1.xx is still very cumbersome on some of the rival models, simply because at this moment in time Flash 10.1.xx is so buggy and troublesome as a plugin, I'm certainly not in a hurry to get it on my N900.
I'd say the N900 broke the mould, just like the Commodore Amiga did in the 80's. Anyone remember that one? It was the machine that started the high end graphics and 3D video editing race, it also invented the multimedia race. People in their thousands sold their PCs to buy the Amiga, because they got fed up of playing Falcon on a 4 colour display. In reality it "kickstarted" the home computer market.
As for the N900, I'll remember it as I remember the Amiga. The N900 has proved that Nokia can make a mobile computer, and in that respects it will be the device to compare other mobile computers. It's opened up the full web experience for handsets and it's driven the final nail into the coffin of the antiquated WAP service, thus dragging the networks screaming and kicking into the 21st Century. Some of them are putting up a fight with restrictions and blocks, but the more handsets we see with full web capabilities, the more they are backing into a corner.
The Commodore Amiga, and indeed the CD32 (the grand-daddy of the console market) have pride of place in the Science Museum because of their cult status. I think the N900 should join them for the same reasons.

  • *My* frank opinion of the N900

    *My* opinion of the N900
I know there are a few threads about that address this but I felt that it wouldn't be so bad to restart the conversation once in a while.
I got my N900 a week and a half ago and am right in the middle of deciding between these 3 choices:
    - keep using the N900
    - go back to my N97 and keep the N900 in the hope that within a few weeks/months Maemo and apps will vindicate us
    - go back to the N97 and send the N900 back and wait for months until Maemo gets updated or even wait for the next Maemo device.
Here is in summary my opinion of the N900: it's a great device/computer but it's a lousy phone. I am kind of critical of the phone below even though I really like it and really want to use it more. So please read with that in mind.
What makes me optimistic is that all the problems I will be mentioning can and most will be fixed by software updates. We are not talking about dismal memory or scratched lenses like the N97 or wobbly sliders like the N95.
So please be kind, here goes my N900 impressions/opinions:
    Hardware
    ++++
    - Solid build. It's huge and heavy but, surprisingly, I don't mind too much. It strikingly contrasts with N97. this is a taste thing.
    - Keyboard is great. Much better feel than N97.
    - Humongous amount of RAM (for now. Once again, aslight dig at N97)
    - Device does not fit in my Columbia khakis' phone pocket.
    - I really like the tilt flip of N97 and as such currently dislike the flat slide for N900. I'm sure this is an acquired taste.
    - I prefer the keyboard layout of N97 though the physical keyboard on N900 is better.
    - Kickstand is flimsy
    - I still think MicroSD slot should be accessible without removing battery cover. Yes, it still allows for hotswapping so that's still good.
    Maemo
    ++++
    - Multitasking is great.
    - Task List shortcut *and* effects are nice.
    - Effects in general are great.
    - I liked the desktops and widgets.
    - I *do* want my portrait mode for everything. This is a huge downer. Everything is in ladscape except the phone dialer.
    - Maemo should implement the "hold-the-key-to-get-the-alternate-character" keyboard scheme that is fairly standard on other Nokia phones.
    - On the virtual keyboard, why would the '.' not be on the same slate as the alpha? Makes no sense to have to switch to the other slate just to punctuate.
    Communications
    ++++
    - I did not think Skype integration would be that important but I love it. SIP and other networks from the dialer as well.
    - I goes and gets your contacts' profile info when you are logged in to a network (Skype, Google Talk, etc) Pretty handy.
    - eMail app does HTML. And pretty well too.
    - Need a way to easily get to the phone app from anywhere.
    - No support for network codes *#num# etc...
    - No Speed dialing
    - No sound profiles! My Nokia 6310 and SE T39 from 2001 did this! **bleep**?
    - No Skype video calling (Fring does it!)
    - eMail app should allow me to view emails in fullscreen mode.
    - The whole message notification system is not very well thought out. If I leave for some time and just unlock the phone, there is not obvious way to tell that I got any new messages. It's only when I do a task list flick that I see that a conversation has resumed. Yes, the notification light flashes but nothing obvious is on the display.
    - There is no obvious notification that I have missed calls. Same as message notification above.
    - It seems to me that the internet connection is never disconnected. Even when all I have that needs the connection is the email app to poll every 30 minutes, the internet (whether 3G or Wifi) icon never goes away. This could be a huge battery saver if optimized.
    - On the flip side, it also appears that if I just turn on the phone, it does not automatically initiate internet connections so then my email does not get refreshed unlees I remember to do it first by hand. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
    Music Player
    ++++
    - It's ok. Not a big critic so I am neither excited not negative about it.
    - A FM receiver on the device but no FM software? **bleep**?
    - Creating playlists is not clear. I still am sot sure how it's done after 10 days.
    Video Player
    ++++
    - Broad format support
    - No support for changing setting when watching a movie. I have some 16:9 movies that it shows at 4:3 and vice versa with no way to change. This makes it useless.
    Web Browsing
    ++++
    - Browser is very good.
    - Love the (albeit limited) gesture shortcuts. Slide from left to hover (ok this one isn't that cool or clear,) slide from right for history, spiral on the screen to zoom in or out.
    Maps and GPS
    ++++
    - GPS lock is much faster than other phones I've used. This is great in conjunction with Camera for geotagging purposes.
    - I don't know what the Maps application is doing on there. It can't do anything. Search finds almost nothing, directions are barely average and no turn-by-turn. Please at least steal or beg Google to make Google Maps for Maemo.
    Camera
    ++++
    - Pretty decent. Better than N97 in my opinion.
    - Geotagging is much faster than N97 even though it seems to tag too early so sometimes it's off because it uses the cellular info before a full GPS lock.
    - Love the 16:9 mode. I realize one can do it post in Gimp but it's still cool.
    - No Xenon flash means photos not as good as N82 in the dark.
    - Once again, same problem as with N82, when taking a portrait photo, Nokia decided to put lanyard slot on "top" of the device which makes the lanyard sometime get in the way of the shot.
    - Photo browser could be so much more.
    Applications
    ++++
    - Fennec, anyone? http://firefox.com/m
    - Obviously, I wish the Maemo catalog of apps were as big as that of Symbian apps but we'll get there, right?
    Office/Organizer
    ++++
    - PDF viewer included.
    - Pretty basic so close to useless.
    - No syncML support so can't sync with GooSync or NuevaSync.
    - I think a device of this caliber/price/power should just have office applications built-in. I don't care if it's DataViz or OpenOffice or AbiWord/Gnumeric but it's bunk that we only get a trial of Documents-to-Go. Anyone know if OpenOffice or AbiWord is coming out for Maemo soon?
    Other
    ++++
    - I am on T-Mobile so 1700 3G rocks.
    - I love doing apt-get in the command line. I am a geek!
    - This has been talked about everywhere and opinions/mileage vary but for me battery life has been dismal. As a test, I charged it up before going to bed: 9pm and by 7am it said it was half empty. All I had running was my mail checking every 30min and all my "identities" were inactive. No Wifi usage just 3G. It dies by 11am. This was after a week of cycling so that battery had a chance to be normalized.
    - Wifi also killed the battery even if it was not connected all the time. This is a known bug so it should be fixed soon.
    - For a > USD500 device, it's stupid that I don't get a full User Guide in the box.
    - Why do they insist on Ovi store. It's **bleep** for Symbian phones, it'll be **bleep** for Maemo.
As I said, some of these are already on the Maemo bugs database, some are widely known issues and some are just personal preferences that may or may never be remedied.
I hope it helps people who are thinking about getting the device and I am hoping that the feedback I get here will help me decide whether to return mine or not.

So it appears that almost none of the firmware fixable items were addressed in Maemo 5/PR1.1. Out of the 23 issues I had that could be fixed via firmware (10 were either hardware or other issues that were not), only the #6 got a partial (and unofficial?) change: you can now browse the web in portrait mode by keying in ctrl+alt+o on the keyboard. Still waiting for another update I guess. I really do miss the phone, it just did not make sense to own and tie up that much money in a device I will not use as my primary phone. although the < USD450 price at Dell is very very tempting ;-)
    Still waiting, Nokia.
For reference, below are my issues from original post.

  • Nokia's price policy of the N900

Folks, in my mind the N900 is *far* too expensive. No doubt, developing such a device may swallow millions, but, for 500 Euros I get a 15" laptop or a netbook with a UMTS stick and flatrate, whereas Nokia offers a telephone with a small 3,5" display.... Being a Linux enthusiast myself I really love the idea of Maemo, but at such a high price? I really wonder whether it is not better to buy a laptop, put openSUSE Linux on it and a UMTS stick, more software, more possibilities, more apps. What would you guys say would be a reasonable price? In my mind between 350 and 400 Euros, 400 being the pain barrier.

    couple of points here:
    1.  when they announced the release of the N900 they immediately dropped the price of the N97 to not be above it.
    2. i dont think that the $600+ dollars in US is a big deal...but here is why
    for the general user/parent/advanced user
    you get a decent camera - $200
you get a decent video recorder - $200
you get a decent audio recorder - $100
you get a decent video player - $100
    you get a great pda - $150
you get a phone - $Free with activation but lets say $100
    you get your sms/mms
you get your social networks integrated - need a laptop for $300
    you get your mp3 player - $50
you get your full internet experience - use the laptop
you get your email - use the laptop
you get your office products (full versions will come for sure ie-word/excel/ppt) - use the laptop
you get your gaming (both new and nastalgae/emulators) - cost of psp/DS/etc with other limitations
you get your instant messangers - use the laptop
you get your gps and navigation - $200
    the list can still grow.
that alone is just $1400 not including the multiple cases and accessories for each, or the bulk you would have to lug around and it is all fairly instant, in the palm of your hand and fits in your pocket.
$600 doesnt sound so bad when you actually use them...actually, it's quite a deal...oh, and free software!
if you like this, kudo it!

  • The N900 preorder-ers thread

    Hi,
I didn't see a thread for N900 preorderers, I'm guessing this is in the right section as I *think* it's classed as an NSeries. If it's not, can someone please move it to the relevant section?
Anyway, this thread is for people who have preordered the N900 and want to discuss it, ask questions about it etc.
I preordered mine yesterday (+10% discount with Quidco). I have an N97 but I'm getting rid of that as soon as I've determined whether or not the N900 is worth the premium.
So I have a couple of questions:
    1. Does anyone have any idea when the N900 will ship from the Nokia store?
    2. Will the phone be useable at all in vertical mode? I know it's an "internet tablet", but I do find vertical modes very useful for long lists, and for one handed texting.

Interesting, you wonder why (supposedly this close to release) Nokia hasn't actually given any dates.
The N97 UK firm launch date was 3 weeks (iirc) before its launch.. soooo.. if there's no firm date yet.. I recon it'll be at least 3 weeks.. which puts it into November.. Maybe it'll be sooner, but as someone pointed out.. this is not a flagship phone, the N97 (and the N97 mini) are the flagship phones.. so I don't imagine there'll be much of a song and dance.. It feels a bit more "viral" in its marketing strategy..
You can download the final Maemo6 SDK (runs nicely on ubuntu) and have a look around that. The platform is "open" in that it is, for the most part, built on open source products. Nokia's components aren't open, they've very closed. Integrating with them comes down to published API (in particular, DBUS) I'm really interested to know how the messaging component integrates as I'd like to implement a bluetooth service that requires access to inbound call and message information.
The platform is pretty solid, but I'm keen to see how well documented the new stuff is. I've been playing with QT 4.6 and it is such a shame Maemo 5 missed that boat.. I've already ported a few QT apps to the N810 and I'm having a go at porting the same apps to Symbian. That interests me the most, but I've been playing with Maemo for years now...

You need to visit that link on your N900, not your PC. Tap the green download arrow and app manager will start and automatically download and install it.
Or try going to X-Terminal on your N900, become root and then type:
    apt-get install petrovich
Either one of those methods will install it.

You'll need to register an account on bugs.maemo.org first, but after that you can search and create bug reports. Give a much information as possible. Remember to log the bug under the right application (in this case, the media player would probably do)
After that someone will pick it up and you should get some feed back. Other people with the same problem can follow your bug too..
I recently logged a bug about firmware availability in the UK and it has been solved/fixed.. so some bugs do get attention!

  • Is the N900 going to have various keyboard layouts...

Hi on one of the forums which i moderate, many people have been asking about the keyboard layouts of the Nokia N900.
Currenlty the pictures and info we found suggests there is only going to be the normal "qwerty" layout.
But what about france with their "azerty"? Or Hungary with "qwertz" and áéőú letters?
As a person, who uses mobile internet a lot on i'd find these layouts rather useful and i'm sure, there are many others like me out there.
So is nokia planning to release the phone in the countries mentioned above with their own layouts? Or are we all going to get the normal "qwety" model?
Looking forward to hearing back from Nokia.
    Thanks for reading.

I believe it does.. I saw a post on talk.maemo.org (official Maemo forum) of a french user who was ordering from the UK to get a phone without a AZERTY french keyboard because he wanted a QWERTY one..
There are a number of country varients, though apparently only the layout differs..
    Some suck..
I'm not sure which, but some languages make use of extra keys for extra symbols so "up" and "down" are now FN+left and FN+Right!!
No dedicated up and down buttons..
I think I'm going to be sick.. I really feel for them.. and I'm quiet happy to be a qwerty ascii user

  • Is the n900 "sim free" if supplied by o2?

i am hunting around for a deal on the n900 at the moment and have been told that if order one on the o2 network that it will be supplied as a sim free model. can onyone confirm this.
Also, does anyone know good places for deals on this device because the best deal i can find at the moment is more expensive than my girlfriends new windows 7 phone (and they paid her old contract off!!!!)

    Hi galaxyclass
AFAIK there are no SIM locked versions of this device, but they are getting a bit thin on the ground brand new; my o2 refurbished unit (7 day return) was certainly unlocked.
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

  • The N900. Phone or Tablet?

I'm just wondering how the information on-line about the N900 has shaped your View of this device? do you regard it as  the next phone up from the n97? or an internet tablet like its predecessors?
if you're planning on getting one, what will be its primary use? phone or tablet?
    Nexu 5

The phone app crashing is a good point, but frankly every phone these days (including s40) will work along these methods.
Within the N900, the phone functionality (calls and messages) is handled by a new project called ofono. This is a "phone abstraction" layer. It has a driver that is specific to Nokia's phone technology and a standard interface that applications can tie into. Think of it like the network stack on a PC.. all applications can connect to the internet via any compatible network card. If you change the network card, the apps work in exactly the same way. Ofono does this, but for phone tech.
apps communicate with ofono via "dbus" If this system crashes, the entire device will more or less stop working.. so we're covered there.. If the phone application dies (as in crashes and stops running) it will be restarted so that's covered too.. The two main problems are:
the phone application crashes and doesn't die.. this means it won't response to signals from dbus and ofono.. so you mightn't get call notifications.. and the other is ofono stops working and doesn't process incoming call info.
In both cases, outgoing calls wouldn't work either..
I wouldn't imagine it is bomb proof yet, but the chances of a crash going undetected are remarkably slim..
My main point is I think you'd be naive to think that the process of handling calls and the like isn't very similar across all phones.. The risk here is the maturity of the software..
I've had phones reboot when calls come in.. and lock solid when calls and messages arrive.. Nokia and others.. With a smart phone, the kernel is MUCH more robust against such crashes and it won't take the entire device out.
The N900 is, in simple terms, a linux computer with a very basic 3G Nokia phone attached via an interface.. That, from my perspective, is a very good design approach..

  • Tethering the N900? Oh dear

I mightn't be able to use the N900 after all.. how disappointing...
I need a handset to support two main things.. firstly ALS/line-2 I really need two numbers on my handset.. My N97 supports it, but I've not heard either way about the N900.. but I suspect it probably won't..
Next thing is tethering (via bluetooth). I need to use my phone as a modem with a laptop.. I don't think Maemo5 supports this yet either..
Not really a problem, I'll get one and use it as a tablet rather than a phone.. but get this.. and this is the total show stopper. Something that wasn't a problem for the previous 3 tablets
You can't tether the N900 to another phone. This means unless you have a sim in it (or you're using wifi) you won't be able to connect to the internet whilst out and about. This was exactly how the N810, N800 and 770 worked.. I bluetooth tethered them to my Nokia phone and away I went. The N900 changes this, apparently
If the N900 can't be used as a decent phone (line-2 / MMS / works as a modem) AND I can't use a different phone as a bluetooth modem to connect to allow it to connect to the internet, I just won't be able to use it.. at least I won't be able to use it outside of the house..
They can't stick to the "its an internet tablet first" if you MUST use it as a phone.. what a crying shame..
    I'm really disappointed about that

Dang, it's really hard to find out if a phone supports line-2 on regular Nokia handsets.
On my N97, if I go into Settings, Calling, Call I get two additional options "Line in use" and "Line change"
However, I also have an E90 handset which doesn't support line-2.. but when I go into settings, phone, call I don't see the "line change" and "line in use" options BUT if I open help it mentions them! A give away the the support is disabled in the phone rather than not available at all.
It might be the same on the N900, but unless you have a Sim with line-2 I guess its going to be really hard to find out! It would be great if line-2 services were enabled on all Nokia phones as it has really held me back from some in the past! I guess the safest thing to try is taking my sim into a Nokia store when they have one in and giving it a try. I've bugged the London flagship store staff on more than one occasion with the same query and they've always been happy to help out
If you happen to hear someone inside Nokia mention ALS or line-2 support though, please do drop a reply! That would be great and cheers for helping out!
