Getting two videos to match

I'm trying to do a project I've done numerous times with iMovie '06. I can't do it easily with iMovie '09, so I thought I'd give Final Cut Express a try. Except I'm having problems, so if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it.
What I do is record a Christmas children's program with two different camcorders - one stays stationary and records the whole stage (camcorder #A), the other is closer and moves to get closer shots of everyone (camcorder #B).
With iMovie '06, I would:
(1) Export the audio from camcorder #B and reimport it as a separate audio track.
(2) Edit the videos for each so they'd have the same length, starting point, ending point and their audios would perfectly match.
(3) I would then find the spots where the camcorder #B was moving and copy video from camcorder #A and paste it over those spots.
Now with Final Cut Express, it makes step (1) unnecessary and it makes step (3) easier, but I'm having trouble accomplishing step (2). How do I match up the audios of two video clips in FCE?
Anybody got any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there Dean,
You'll find the process may be even easier in FCE. Here's what I'd do to match up the two clips:
1. Put the video of the zoomed out stage on track V1, and put the video from the moving camera on track V2.
2. Locate a frame in both videos that is clearly the same, e.g. a camera flash or other quick movement.
3. Highlight the video on track V2 with the playhead over that frame, and hit the "M" key to add a marker.
4. Now switch off visibility for track V2, and find the same frame on track V1. Highlight the clip and add a marker on that frame by pressing "M."
5. Drag the two video clips on the timeline so that the two markers you placed line up. If you have Snapping enabled the two markers should snap together so that the clips are synced but on different tracks.
6. Now go through the movie and decide which parts of the moving clip on V2 you don't want. Use the *Blade Tool* (b) to cut out these parts and delete them.
You will then have a timeline with the parts of the video on V1 you would like to see showing through, and the parts of the clip on V2 you would like to see covering up the same part in V1 so that only the clip on V2 shows. Hold down the Option key and select the audio track you want to delete, and delete it so that there is only one audio.
You may find that Piero's [Quarter PIP|http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/QuarterPIP.html] filter helps you with step number 6, as it will reduce the clips to make them smaller so that you can accurately judge which parts of the clip on V2 are better than those same parts on track V1.
Sorry if my explanation was confusing, if you have any questions about what I said ask away!

I have a P6N SLI Platinum that I am trying to get two video cards working at the same time, but not in an SLI configuration. I'm wanting to use them for 3 monitors at the same time. The cards are both Nvidia 8800GS, but one is by EVGA and one is XFX. Both cards work individually, but when trying to use both of them at the same time, Windows will not recognize them. I am currently running Windows XP Pro. Is this type of configuration possible with this motherboard? Any help would be appreciated.

i think you will be told by msi to be able to use two card on one mobo you have to have sli enabled.

When Microsoft decided not to support Windows Media any more, they made Flip4Mac available for free. If you have not taken advantage of that free download, this might be a good time.
It may not completely solve the problem, but your Mac will play more with the free player. No need to pay for the Upgrades.

    Hi,
with String patternStr = "(unknown host | 100 %)"; you are looking

    Try "(unknown host|100 %)"

  • How do I get my printer to match the colours of the image as I see it on screen?

How do I get my printer to match the colours of the image as I see it on screen? My HP Office Jet Pro L7680 printer tends to print my images with a bias towards red compared to the image I am seeing on screen with Lightroom 5 using a Mac with Retina 5 screen. Would appreciate any expertise on how to calibrate the printer to the screen

You have two options. The first method costs nothing but is not as accurate and the second means buying hardware and investing some time. The fastest way to get things closer is to download the color profile from the printer manufactures site for the printer and paper combination you are using. Install it on you Mac and relaunch LR. This is best when the paper and printer are both from the same company; in your case, HP. If the paper is not made by HP, you can often find profiles for your paper/printer by going to the paper maker's web site and doing a search for the appropriate profile.
The other alternative is to purchase a piece of hardware such as the ColorMonki which can be used to not only profile your monitor for color balance but also you printer/paper as well as your camera. When all of your devices agree on what color 118,118,118 means, you get the same color from capture to print but this is also an expensive option and there is a lot of time involved in building your own color profiles. The results however, are much more accurate.
Once you have a color profile installed, the next step involves doing soft proofing. Once you have your image looking the way you want it to in LR, open it in the soft proof option. This will show you how your print will look using the color profile for the paper/printer you are using. During the process, you will be shown the print on your screen which may look off. Use the small triangle in the upper-right corner of the histogram to turn on the out-of-gamut warning. This will highlight any parts of your image which contain colors your printer can't handle. Use the rendering intent options to decide how you want these colors handled (relative or perceptual). Check them both and use the one you like best. You can also make additional changes at this point if required before you generate the JPG image. Make sure to save it as a max quality JPG using the sRGP profile. Once saved, you can send this image to your printer or even to a lab as the process is the same. The attached link should get you to a video showing how to use the ColorMunki hardware/software but, more importantly, shows you how to prepare an image for printing (in this case, for a lab) using soft proofing with the color profile created (or downloaded).--Great Color from Your Lab Prints – Every Time! on Vimeo

  • Delivering two videos at same time

I am trying to simulate a software-instructional classroom by showing two (720x480) videos at the same time. One video showing the instructor in the classroom and the other of the instructor's computer screen.
The first video (of the classroom) would be shot using standard DV footage shot with a Sony PD 170.
The second "video" (screen capture video) would be captured using software such as SnapZ Pro, Camtasia, or similar software. It is important that this "video" be as large as possible to show the detail of the software.
If displaying two (720 x480) videos at the same time is not possible, does anyone have suggestions for producing a full size screen capture video (larger than 720x480) with the ability to place the (720x480) instructor video in a corner of the screen capture video?
Is this possible with FCP or any other application?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

I came up with an interesting workflow for this.
    There are three challenges:
    1. SnapZ will create files that QT/FCP will interpret as 10fps no mater what you do. I don't know if this has been fixed yet. This post describes the workaround and this post describes the underlying reasons for the issue.
    2. using a display resolution higher than 720x480 will allow you to zoom into areas of the interface to show detail, but will require rendering when combining with SD footage in an SD sequence.
    3. Even if you use snapZ to record a 720x480 display, the 10fps issue and format difference may still require lots of rendering.
    Sooooo, here's what I did:
I recorded snapZ movies at "full" display resolution. This allowed me to do some zooms in post. You can also zoom in real time with a bit of rehearsal by using the ctrl-scroll ball trick.
I planned to edit the screen caps in two stages, first to cut for timing at full-res, and second to combine with SD footage and add the zooms and other graphics.
I created sequences native to the full-res clips' format using the "make multiclip sequence" command.
I fixed the frame rate by placing each one into a sequence at full resolution, but with the correct frame rate, then re-exporting to new quicktimes. You may find it helpful to create a sequence preset with these settings. Your list of sequence presets will be the same list of formats you can choose for a batch export.
Once I had cut for timing in a full-res sequence, I took the contents and pasted them into an SD sequence, using paste attributes to scale them all down to fit. Now I had the hi-res clips in an SD sequence that I could zoom into without them just looking like blurry crud.
Alternatively, there are other hardware solutions you can use to get HD video out of the computer, but you'll need another computer or recording device to capture it. AJA, Blackmagic, and Matrox have capture cards that can output your desktop as HD video. You can also just get a simple DVI to HDMI adapter, but all of these solutions lack the simplicity of SnapZ's one-system-no-recorder setup. SnapZ also allowed me to record more than 2 tracks of audio, in my case the "live" voiceover and the stereo output of the music software we were demoing.
One more option to avoid rendering during cutting if you have to mix formats with the SnapZ workflow is to create DV proxy footage of the hi-res, then reconnect to the HD at the end. However, this requires the fame rates to match, and assigning matching timecode and reel, if applicable, after re-importing to FCP and before reconnecting.
Hope this helps, or at least made some interesting reading, if you made it this far.

  • How do you PRECISELY sync two video tracks?

    Here's the background:
I filmed a video, in the dark, doing sequential movements with light-sources while listening to a metronome (to create a pattern of trail-effects)
I then took this video, duplicated it, took the opacity down to 50%, and overlayed it with the original
I then attempted to offset the video by 1/2/3 clicks of the metronome, identifying it by the soundwave.
    Here's my dilema:
I can only use the razor tool at certain quantities of time along the timeline, and can only DRAG the clip along certain incriments of time along the time line.
I am finding it impossible to get the metronome 'clicks' lined up seamlessly!
why can I not drag the duplicate clip along to ANY incriment of space/time along the timeline? Is there a way around this?
*I have tried turning of the magnetic timeline
Thanks in advance for any tips

I tried this as well. If you zoom in enough, even when using the 'p' tool, the clip 'jumps' along certain incriments as I try to drag it. I can not place it precisely where I want along a continuous set of coordinates along the timeline.
I am trying to match up two videos via the audio waveform, syncing the metronome 'clicks' that are present in the videos (and also taking them out of phase, with the metronome 'clicks' lining up, but the video itself is not (it's out of phase)) [[think sine and cosine, same waveform, but out of phase]].
I used the metronome to sustain consistency [[wavelength]] and mark the points at which to sync them out of phase [[i.e. crest vs. trough, etc]]
    Here's what I'm looking at
    http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9231/screenshot20111027at122d.png
I drag the bottom clip over, but it only moves to the placement in which it is in the picture below the first, and CANNOT BE PLACED PRECISELY WHERE I NEED IT TO BE, even while using the 'p' tool

  • Lining up Two Video clips-please help!

So hi! I've been using premiere for about a year, I came from Sony Vegas Pro.
Anyway, we had a shoot yesterday, a two camera interview on one subject. (7d &5dmII) both shooting 23.976fps and we recorded our audio with an external recorder.
So, I lined up the audio by turning the turning the 'Show Audio in Time Units' on. This works great. I can move the audio to perfectly match up between the frames of the video in 1/4800 increments. Lovely.
After I lined up the audio I attempted to line up the two video tracks on top of each other (when the clap board strikes) and even though the Show Audio in Time Units is enabled, I can't perfectly line up these tracks. The track snaps between frames, making it impossible to line up. Yes, snapping is turned off. How do I move the video 'between the frames' so to speak? This was quite easy to do in Vegas.
    Thank you!

    Craig,
I strongly agree. Back in those days, I never felt comfortable with video, even if we recorded it to 2" tape. I could not hold that up to the light and see my images! It was "the devil's work." Back then, there was no deck-to-deck editing, and only doing a diagonal cut and tape job - but you could not really see where you were cutting.
Regarding NLE work nowadays, like you, I'd only go back for a "trip down memory lane." I can do on a simple laptop, 10,000 more things than I could ever do on an 8-plate Moviola - things that I could not even imagine back then. Had I been given a peak at PrPro in 2010, back in '72, I would never have been able to either believe it, or comprehend it.
You know, every time that I see the word Bin, I can conjure up those laundry "bins," with racks above and either clips or clothes pins. I also remember squinting to try and read the cryptic notes in grease pencil at the head of each in the darkened edit booth. "is that a 5, or an 8? Oh SHOOT, I just smudged it!"
Don't get me started on mixed formats. I'd never have considered mixing 8mm (split-16), S-8, 16mm and a bit of 35mm in an edit. Only recourse was a trip to the lab for prints, and we always knew that quality was going to differ greatly. Now, we just run the stuff through a conversion program, Import and edit happily, or nearly so.
Yes, I will take that random crash/hang, and smile. If the Moviola crashed, we had to fly a tech from Dallas and then hold our breath. Of course we could jump over to our rewinds and splicing block, and still get a bit of work done - the "old fashioned way."
The kids have no idea of easy they have it - right on their desktops. I envy them, 'cause they started with NLE and probably have creative ideas, that I will never have, just 'cause I still have a slightly closed view of things. I envy them!
OK, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

  • Can PE3 synchronize two video sources for post edit AB roll?

In PE3, is there a way to synchronize two digital video files (AVI) to create a AB roll type post edit.  My two captured video files seem to have different frame speeds or frame durations.  How do I align and frame match 2 video sources?  The situation is a 2 camera shoot.  How to best create an AB roll edit of the 2 videos sources with audio from one video file as the common element?

    Wes,
Armed with Steve's article, you should be able to do what you want.
I've got a question, and maybe a suggestion to address the frame-rate problem early on, to help solve that problem without a lot of fiddeling. What are the two frame-rates? G-Spot will tell you exactly, if you can not find this in Properties. If the source files are DV-AVI, they should be of the exact same frame-rate to begin with, but if one is off a bit, I'd convert the non-DVD spec one to match. First place I'd try this would be to simply Interpret Footage in the Project Panel. If that does not work, then Windows Movie Maker can do this for you, or you can use other conversion tools to get them to match. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it's not freeware. Getting the two sources into perfect sync in the beginning will go a very long way to achieving success.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Caveat] I do not have PE3, only PE4, but I think that this will apply to your version.
[Edit] After reading Steve's article, the one thing that I would do (after establishing sync) to assist me in editing multi-camera would be to set the Video Track Display to show all "frames" and the expand the height of each of the two Video Tracks (VT's), so that they occupy most of the vertical real estate in the Timeline. Then, I'd zoom in on the horizontal display of the Timeline, so that I could see fairly clearly, each frame. This basically makes the Timeline like a detailed Sceneline, but keeps you in Timeline Mode. Because you do not have the Multi-camera Mode that PrPro does, you will not be getting anything but your upper Video Track footage in the Program Monitor. You will be viewing the footage ON the Timeline. This WILL necessitate a lot of horizontal scrolling on the Timeline, but is doable. Then, when you wish to be using the footage from VT1, you will cut out (Sissors Tool) the overlaying footage from VT2. I'd personally arrange my main footage (like the main Audio Track in Steve's article) on VT1, and my "cutaway" camera's footage on VT2. As VT2 takes prescedence over VT1, you can leave VT1's footage pretty much alone, and just cut the footage on VT2. I would use Cross-dissolves on the Head and Tail of the the "cut" Clips on VT2. Remember that if you use these, you will want to make sure that the cut has come where you want the scene on VT2 to absolutely start, or end. The Duration of the Cross-dissolves will determine when the scene either becomes 100% visible (Head), or 100% invisible (Tail). Also, remember that Dip-to-Black on VT2 takes the image on VT1 to black, hence my use of Cross-dissolves.
Using this method, also allows one to do a bit of nudging of the Clips (cut from the original) on VT2, to compensate from any loss of sync. Though you could possibly use this to adjust for the differences in framerate, I'd still try to get the footage as exact, as is possible, to start - a lot less work that way. Also, once the "holes" have been cut into the footage on VT2, you can start to use the Program Monitor much more.
As Steve points out, PrPro makes it easier by locking Tracks and a Multi-camera dual monitor, when in Multi-camera Mode.
This was exactly how we did it with film, except that we had to splice in black leader, where the cuts were made, and could not keep our VT1 footage intact, as we can with an NLE and video. Since we were dealing with sprocket holes, we had spiked gears (sprockets)  on a "sync block" and once we'd get the alignment right, would physically flip down a guide, that would "lock" the film to those two rolls of film to the sync block. Even though it sounds tough, when you read it, it's really not, and so very much easier, than it was with film.

  • How can I combine two video files into one finished file?

I'm making a video of a guitar player.  I'm using two cameras simultaneously.  One gives the overall wide shot, and the other is zoomed in on his hands.  Both cameras run at the same time.  I would like to use the wide shot as the main video, and occasionally fade in clips from the zoomed in shot to show details of his playing.  I can manually line up both files so they are synchronized.  How do I cut a clip out of the main (wide) shot, leave the gap there, and insert a clip from the closeup?  I'm putting the two video files on two of the video timelines and synchronizing them that way.
Any suggestions on how to proceed?

The effect you are looking for is 'Picture in Picture'. If you want the gap to be there for the duration of the timeline add some 'black video' - from the Tasks Pane> New Item - on the video track above the main track. Resize / position it to where you wish it to be.
Then with your second clip (now on video track 3)
Do the same sizing / positioning for it.
split video and audio and delete or disable the audio.
Cut it where you want the various start/ends of the fade to be.
Delete, or just disable (right-click) the unnecessary segments.
Apply fade in / out to the remaining segments.
    [EDIT]
Also check out the 'Presets' in Video Effects. There are a variety of PiP presets that may do what you need.

  • How to Get In & Out of Match, Get your Downloads and Run

How to Get In & Out of Match, Get your Downloads and Run
So you have read the marketing hype, and are thinking what you really want is to pay for the service to upgrade your low quality bitrate files to a bit better 256KBPS rate easily, as don’t fancy rebuying/ reimporting or other method
This guide should show you the fastest route to achieve you upgrades
It assumes you’re working from your main music library, and know something about IT, and have <25k of music files
    Backup your music files
If you know how to do this, its simple right – so once done then move to step 2, if not read below so you don’t blame me for a loss
    Transfer Hardware
your choice the transfer hardware, suggest offline harddrive via USB3.0 (blue USB connector/eSata/ 1494b/1GB NIC/etcetera but your call
If you use USB2.0/ 100MB NIC/1394a or other lower transfer method, accept the time hit
Don’t use Time Backup/local disk backup software unless you have RAID 5 setup or better (and if wondering what that is, you almost certainly don’t then)
Don’t use  internet backup service unless you live next door to the hosting company, with stunning internet connection to envy 99.9% of the human race, remember this is the fast method folks)
    Transfer Software
I am assuming you know how to do a copy n paste/ robocoby/xcopy/drag n drop or whatever method turns you on via finder/explorer/cmd window ect
Caveat #01: If not sure how to do above, then stop now as you are not IT literate ready for this
Find your music files and back them up
Now keep the computer running, preferably with nothing else running from this point for ease of use bar an active internet connection, and power saving switched off
If you know where the files are great, backup the files, but some don’t so for them as below
Caveat #02: if you don’t know how to find them your most likely on default settings, or sitting with a legacy from a past upgraded machine - below should help but you might want to stop now if you have never been curious about the location before
Within iTunes , go to [Edit/Preferences/Advanced] and note down the location shown for Itunes Media Location
In the same location of preferences, hit [Keep iTunes Media Folder organised] and let the application do its stuff.  You will end up with the location in 1ciii a ready to copy location which for simplicity of topic, copy the whole folder and its subfolders.  You may end up with some extra copies of music files (an iTunes safety mechanism, but it won’t show in the folder location, and we can ignore later on)
Enable Match (after paying for the service)
    Run Match
Accept that the Apple iTunes process is not perfect, may crash/stop/pause and reboots will be needed, and we can move on so to speak. Key here is you cannot do an unattended script or assume no end user interaction needed L
Turn on iTunes Match, notice the new ITunes Match on the left hand sidebar, click it, then hit the Start button – if it works and you eventually get to STEP 3 perfect.
If it fails before getting to STEP 3, reboot and restart
If this still fails to get to STEP 3, then create a new iTunes database (browse forums on how to do), read your media files from the location in 1civ
Stop MATCH  (the upload process only, not the service)
Once STEP 3 starts, CLICK STOP - ASAP, as all this does it upload data, and you don’t want to do this, just get your upgraded files (remember the title of this entry your reading!)
This also avoids future issues with Album art lost
    Delete Matched low bitrate files
Create a NEW SMART playlist, with two criteria
Show all files with bitrate is less then 256
Show all files where iCloud status is MATCHED
In the new playlist, click it and it shows the files we want to blow away.
Click Edit / Select All then
Click ctrl in windows/apple  (cmd) logo in mac, and press delete button, ensuring you do NOT tick the delete from iCloud Option.  Now want a few mins for it do do its stuff.
    Download Upgraded BitRate Files
In the same location as 5, reselect all, and right click, and select the option to download all, and off it goes
On the lefthand sidebar in iTunes, click Downloads, and you will then see in the middle bottom screen an option for simultaneous downloads (select it)
Your done Just let the app now do its stuff. I would ignore the message saying you can get on with other things, and use anther machine, preferably not using the same internet connection.
    Optional Steps:
Click randomly from the Itunes/Matched/256KBPS listed files, and play them.  Not all the files, one every 30 or so, and just the start, then last few seconds to check not dead or corrupt files.
Update your Step 1 backup with the new files, which is going to take up more space, guess at 40%.
Kill your iTunes Match account (both the recurring automatic subscription, and  the account if not continuing to use the store part of iTunes)

No. After upgrading (and of course make a back up first) you will need to update iPhoto to v9.6.1 (you won't be able to do this prior to upgrading). Here's how:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Photos is v1 of a new app, as yes it's not as mature as iPhoto. It uses a different technology for working with external editors. That requires Adobe to write an extension to let it hook into the new app. Not done yet, neither has anyone else.
Going forward: iPhoto will run on OS 10.10., but there is no guarantee for subsequent versions of the OS. You might want to factor that into your anger term thinking.

  • I can't get two "room" objects to "glue" together in a floor plan

I can 't get two rooms to "glue" together in Visio 2010.
I've tried several ways to drag the "room" objects and handles around the floor plan but not only do the rooms not glue to each other, they snap or glue to other things (like ruler divisions), making it almost impossible to get the room walls to
    overlap cleanly.
I found a forum posting somewhere where the respondent only suggested verifying default settings and I matched mine up with those, but that thread went cold without a solution.
What settings are required, and what steps are required, to glue two "room" objects together in Visio 2010?

    Thanks, George,
You began your message with a question, but I think you understand "why I would want rooms to snap together", thus your work-around.
Nonetheless, the "big answer" is that I want to set the
room dimensions for each room individually (we're using Visio to place our belongings within each room) and then snap the rooms together to "build the house".
I started out by creating several rooms with correct dimensions (which I then locked with Developer / Protection).
That's when I discovered that the rooms "wanted" to snap to ruler divisions and geometry instead of to each other.
It's pretty clear that the room design templates / stencils in Visio 2010 have limited functionality - the "convert to walls" feature, for example, generates some pretty horrendous artifacts.
The second most irksome problem is connector routing - I've spent an hour or two doing nothing more than removing excess connection points because connectors insist on routing around some shapes, generating bizarre, wandering paths that I can't seem to disable.
But still, Visio 2010 is better for this purpose than CorelDraw and far better than "SmartDraw", and I don't have any CAD software.  I just doubt that Microsoft has made Visio 2013 any better - Microsoft
seems to flip between simple maintenance releases and "grand" rewrites, failing to embrace anything like "continuous improvement".
Finally, the ribbon, a "blonde" solution at best, is particularly horrible in Visio - much of my work on this drawing has required me to switch among ribbon tabs.
Sorry for the rant, George, but anything I can learn to help with these issues will make the remainder of the job better.
