GI/ASM upgrade from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3

Hi All,
I need to upgrade GI running ASM (11.2.0.1) to 11.2.0.3. This is a standalone installation.
1. Can we do a out-of-place upgrade for GI without bringing down the old GI and when I get downtime then upgrade the ASM instance?
If yes wouldn't my root.sh change the /etc/ files used by the old GI and make it unsuable (unlike in RDBMS out-of-place upgrade).
2.what is the rollback strategy for a GI upgrade. If we face an issue?
3.Can I please know the steps to go ahead with this installation!!
I have gone through the oracle documentation but its quite confusing.
Thanks in Advance..

I do not have RAC its a standalone database using ASM

  • Database upgrade - Oracle 10g r2 ,RAC(2 Nodes with ASM) upgrade from HP-UX to RHEL 5.9

    Hi All
I am planning to upgrade our RAC database 2 nodes with ASM from HP-UX to RHEL 5.9.
    Following is our setup
    Current setup:
    Oracle Database 10g r2 (10.2.0.5.0) RAC database.
    Nodes: 2
    Storage: ASM
    OS: HP-UX ia64
    Database Size: 1.2 TB
    New Setup:
Oracle Database 10g r2(10.2.0.5.0) RAC database
    Nodes: 2
    Storage: ASM
    OS: RHEL 5.9 x86 64
Since we are moving from a big endian format to a small endian format(HP-UX to RHEL 5.9) the same ASM cannot be used.
Kindly help me with process and other important documents to be followed.
    Thanks.

    Hi...
If it was a standlone database concepts like transportable tablespaces, rman would have been convenient.
Since we are using a RAC database with ASM as storage how do we use these techniques specified in NOTE:733205.1
Due to endianness issue we cannot use the same ASM instance.
Along with the new RAC node install a new ASM instance would have to be created.
Kindly help me with migration for RAC with existing ASM to new Hardware
    Thanks and Regards

When you download the patchset, it include documentation about how to perform the upgrade.
In Metalink there are several notes, I thin this is interesting, Doc ID 1434351.1

    Hi,
You need to use a different IP address for the SCAN VIP. In your example, it cannot be the same as dlpqcora1.
Also, if you are not using a DNS to resolve it, then be aware that only one IP address can be configured (from note +[ID 887522.1] 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure Single Client Access Name (SCAN) Explained+ ):
    >
Instead of DNS or GNS, Can we use '/etc/hosts' to resolve SCAN?
Oracle strongly recommends that you do not configure SCAN VIP addresses in the hosts file. But if you use the hosts file to resolve SCAN name, you can have only one SCAN IP address.
If hosts file is used to resolve SCAN hostname, you will receive Cluster Verification Utility failure at end of installation (See NOTE 887471.1 for more details)

  • ASM UPGRADE

    Hi,
I have some doubt in ASM Upgrade and thats what I would like to discuss this issue here.If I am going to upgrade database, clusterware and asm then the approach should be like below:-->
Database version from 10.1.0.5 to 10.2.0.4
    OS AIX 5.3 TL8
    (1)install new crs_home clusterware 10.2.0.4
(2)upgrade database to 10.2.0.4 from 10.1.0.5 by installing new Oracle_home
    (3) Upgrade ASM from 10.1.0.5 to 10.2.0.4 by installing separate oracle_home.
Here I have doubt in upgrading asm from old to new version.Does it going to affect datafile during asm instance upgrade. If not then what is the method to upgarde asm in such a environment.
Please help me out on this topic.
    Thanks in advance!
    Mk

    Hello Mk,
Take a look on Metalink note 730365.1 (Oracle Database Upgrade Path Reference List) and read the patchset documentation.
You must upgrade ASM before upgrade the database. Then I think the correct order would be (1,3,2) on your case.
Also there are a howto on http://mufalani.blogspot.com/2009/06/applying-10204-patch-on-rac-systems.html
    Cheers,

  • Upgrading from 10.2 to 11.1/11.2 plus OS upgrade

    Hi Experts!
I need a little advice from you guys. I am planning to upgrade from Oracle RAC 10.2 to Oracle RAC 11.1/11.2.
I am not able to decide which one will be good idea that is upgrading to 11.1 or 11.2.
And on the top of it we are going to have OS upgrade from SuSe 9 to Suse 10 64 bits.
I did not find a good document on how to move from Oracle RAC 10.2 to Oracle RAC 11.1/11.2.
How can I achieve the high availability during the OS upgrade?
Do I need to take any action after the OS upgrade to relink the Oracle binaries?
    Below are my environment details:
    OS: Suse 9 64bit
    DB: 10.2.0.4
    ASM: NO
planning to upgrade on same server:
    OS upgrade to: Suse 10
    DB: 11.1.0.7 or 11.2.0.2
    ASM: NO
Let me know if I need to post more details.
    Thanks in advance.
    MAW

    Thanks for your reply Xaheer!
I would like to have my DB up and running on some other machine while the OS Upgrade is being performed.
I am planning for Logical standby (read only), switchover (read write) and redirect user connections to this DB.
Once the OS Upgrade is completed, I will perform a switch over and bring my DBs down for Upgrade.
My goal is to have minimum down time for the PROD.
Do you know any MOS note on how upgrade from 2 node RAC 10.2.0.4 to 2 node RAC 11.1.0.7 or 11.2.0.2.
I am not clear with 11gR2 Upgrade Companion.
Thanks again for taking out time in answering my questions.

  • Rolling upgrade from 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7

    Hello -
I am testing the "rolling upgrade" from 11.1.0.6. to 11.1.0.7. I have a two node cluster on Linux. Is there a way to upgrade either the ASM software or the dbms software without causing downtime to the entire cluster? I can upgrade the clusterware in a true rolling fashion. However, when I attempt to upgrade the ASM location, it ends up taking down the other node. Same for the rdbms software - The other instance ends up going down when I start the patching on one instance - from the remove operations being performed. Has anyone successfully patched an entire stack (without downtime)?
Thanks in advance for any insights!

Yes, I am following those instructions. The ASM instructions caused the other node to be inaccessible. But, when I did the rdbms upgrade, then node B was also inaccessible during that time. I will go through more iterations of this testing, but so far, I have not been able to develop a proof of concept for a true rolling upgrade from 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7. If anyone has been able to do this, please let me know the procedures that were followed.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Rolling upgrade from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3

    Windows 2008. 2 node RAC
I attempted a rolling upgrade from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.3 in a dev environment in prep to do my prod. I hit all kinds of issues and when googling I found there was a known issue with rolling upgrades between these versions and there was a patch I was meant to have applied before starting the rolling upgrade. I rolled back to 11.2.0.2 but for the life of me, I cant find reference to that patch now.
    anyone know what it is?
    /still looking/

    Hello,
    Please refer below document
Things to Consider Before Upgrading to 11.2.0.3 Grid Infrastructure/ASM (Doc ID 1363369.1)
You can check the section related to 11.2.0.2.
It is better to check complete document carefully before attempting the upgrade.

  • Deinstall Error for Old Grid Home after Upgrade from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2

    Hi,
I just upgraded from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.2, both the grid infrastructure and the databases, using out-of-place upgrade. There were no errors during the upgrade and was able to deinstall the old database homes with no issues. The configuration we have is two standalone database servers connected to a clustered ASM array.
Now I'm trying to remove the old grid infrastructure home using deinstall. I get the following exception in the log file:

Any idea what I missed during the upgrade that makes the deinstall fail?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
if you upgrade you will not deinstall the old home, but simply remove it with rm.
There should be a MOS Note describing the procedure (It might be necessary as well to update the inventory).
Unfortunately don't have access to MOS atm...

  • Is it really possible to upgrade from a Treo 650 to a Treo 750?

I am not a very happy customer at the moment, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I upgraded from my old Palm Tungsten to a Zire, then to a Cingular Treo 650, combining three devices into one. I have since discovered that the Treo 650 seems to have a faulty transmission mode, as I can rarely be clearly understood by whomever I call. Am on the second (or third, I have lost track) and continue to have the same problem. I get five bars of reception but can't be understood on the other end. A bit of a problem when one is trying to call 911. Am constantly told I am "breaking up". The repair shop says it "Can't duplicate the problem". OK, then I do not want to give up all the info I have stored in the fool thing, and the 750 seems to have a different system, so I thought I would try that. All the stuff I could find seemed to indicate it wouldn't be a problem to upgrade. When the 750 arrived, I tried to install the software from the CD on my Windows XP computer. No dice. Setup encounters an error and closes. Can't even look at the files, because setup tries to run any time I access the CD. From any drive.  Gave it to my girlfiend to check on her computer, and the CD seemed to run fine. Other CDs work just fine on my computer. Must be some kind of conflict, but what? Tried calling the AT&T number that suggested they could help with setup, and was first connected to the business center, they routed me to the laptop center, who routed me to the network center, who said they would have to bring in the Palm customer service and connected me to a Mac guy that dumped me back to a menu that took me to someone for whom English is a second language with whom I was trying to communicate over a very poor satellite connection. They made no sense anyway. telling me first that I couldn't have two desktops running (wrong, my girlfriend has my old Zire and the CD worked fine) and then insisting that the serial number on my device had to start with a P, when it clearly does not have any alpha characters in it. Gave up on that route of assistance. Managed to get the new ActiveSync installed from my girlfriends computer over the network. Great. Now let's get my 650 synced with Outlook (which I have not used at home) and see if we can move on. Nope. First I have to update Outlook 2000 from the old Win98 to my current XP. Find the old CD, and square that away. OK, now sync to Outlook. Nope. The sync program gives an error, saying it will only sync with Outlook 98, 2000, and XP(2002). Good grief. I have Outlook 2000, and the software apparently does not recognize it. If the Palm doesn't work, there is no reason for me to keep this phone, and I am very close to returning it and abandoning the Palm entirely when I upgrade to something that works, although I dread re-entering all that information.

Thanks for the feedback. Today I installed an Enterprise version of Office 2007 I purchased a while back, but had not yet installed. Microsoft presented a few challenges, but they were quickly resolved. I then downloaded the appropriate conduit from Palm, and synced the 650 with the handheld overwriting the computer. Then used Active Destop to sync the 750. Satisfied I had moved as much info as possible, I called AT&T and had them move the phone number to the new Treo.
Bonus! When the guy at AT&T called me on the new phone to verify it, he said it sounded better than my landline.
Sorry for the streaming paragraph. When it is late I tend to write like I think.

  • I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine until I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded it from iTunes, my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers.  Can I go back and re-sync one app from my old phone?

I upgraded from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 6.  Everything converted fine.  Yesterday I deleted an app in error.  When I downloaded the software it from iTunes ( did this many times on the old 3GS), my account is no longer recognized by the app's host servers (Playtika), even though it did after the initial conversion.  Can I go back and re-sync just one app from my old phone?

Try deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache.
