Gibberish when unzipping files in Putty

Hello. I'm ingesting files from one system (db hosted on Solaris 10) to another (db hosted on Solaris 9). Files come in zipped, and contain various txt files, which I'll use SQL*Loader to load.
The unzipping, loading etc. is all handled in a ksh shell script. Sadly, we use Putty for all our unix work (and that's part of the problem I think). The files normally arrive at the target host in pairs. When I try to unzip the files, a load of gibberish is sent to the screen. Like this:
Code:
mv: cannot access C/$tf_peo_deals_1to1_20100121080000.txtíZ[oÛ8~`þ{2HÝ][m8¶×v:Í¡ØL¢©-²ü~¤dù¶ÈNçO:<¢(òð|<Wi:n&íδ7Ìz]9Åe9÷®f_OãñdÖG3ê§ÎÞh8
(that's only a fragment. The whole thing is like Lord of the Rings.)
This is a problem as we have associated trace files which our ops guys need to look at, and they're filling up to monstrous sizes with these strange characters. At a guess, I'd say this is due to differing character sets on the source and target machines, but I haven't a clue about how to resolve this.
Has anyone seen this before? Any feedback would be gratefully received.
Strangely, I don't see this problem when there is just one file to process, which is sad, as that's never the case.
Thanks,
Ray

Hmm, i doubt PuTTY is the problem here, have you tried running unzip from the console?
How are the files created?
Do you use any flags to unzip?
Does the content of the file looks ok if you look on it using unzip -l?
Can you extract then with 'jar' properly?
jar xf <zip file>
Lastly, if all else fails, you can always try to compile a newer version of unzip from www.info-zip.org
.7/M.

    hi,
    have you tried to delete and purge this item and re-upload the zip file again ?
    another option to unzip the file would be to upload the file via Webfolders (WebDAV) from your windows explorer and unzip it directly from there. this could be a workaround for your problem.
    if the error reproduces and you cannot use the workaround i suggest to open a service request with oracle support services.

  • Unzip - file adapter

    Hi everyone,
    I need help configuring SAP PI (7.0) to unzip a file, containing a variable number of XML files, that will subsequently serve as inputs to my other mappings.
    I've tried setting up a sender and a receiver file adapter, using the AF_Modules/PayloadZipBean to perform the unzipping.
    The log indicates that the unzipping is performed successfully.
    The first problem is that the receiver file adapter only creates one file (the test ZIP-file contains 3 xml files), which contains only the first XML-file!
    The second problem is to get PI to use the names of the files in the ZIP-file when unzipping; that is, I want to keep the names of the files contained in the ZIP-file.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Unable to unzip files , unable to move apps into the app foldercant update

    I cannot unzip files. Also if i try to install a new app by dragging it to the applications folder it says "that files already exists".
    also if i try to update with software update it gives an error. i tried running verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions but this did nothing please help i am scared cuz my last time machine was along time ago.

    Not to worry.
    A few clarification questions first.
    What exactly does the dialog say when you try to drag a new app to the applications folder? Is it something like, "an older version of this already exists in this location, do you want to replace it with the version you are moving?"
    And, what application are you attempting to use to unzip files?

  • Unzip files from SDCARD

    HI,
    i am trying to unzipping files from external sdcard..
    i am using zipme.jar, but when i am deploying this application it give error.
    please nay one hep me to unzipping files using 3rd-party jar

    But my question is that if in a source folder we have several files which are in zipped format and the folder is getting updated every min (say) with new zipped files (which are dumped from some outside environment).I need to unzip all the files present in the folder ,if new one comes there then also check for the new zipped file and unzip it.You don't need to keep re-stating that.
    I had written a code for unzipping a file from a folder (thinking the folder is not updated everytime).Or that.
    Now I am thinking of using threads because if I create suppose 5 threads and every threads poll the source folder and pick up a zip file ,send it for unzipping it and again poll the source folder for any new entries?Or that.
    If using the threads here hits performace then what should I use?Err, what you presently have?
    Provide me any sample code or link that would be more useful.You've already written it.

  • Unzip file size

    Is there a way for me to know the size of an unzipped file before unzipping it?

    I don't think there is any way apart from adding the sizes of each ZipEntry's uncompressed size. This isn't at all bad when you are accessing a zipfile through a ZipFile (since this accesses the zip as a random access file). (This is as fast as you can get unless the information is stored elsewhere which I believe is not the case)
    If you do the summation via a ZipInputStream then it will decompress the results anyway

    I purchased PDF Converter Plus, v1.0 (4 ). I am unable to convert PDF into text. I get all gibberish when I try to do the conversion.

    I went to the site and did exactly as the 'support' said. I tried three PDF documents for conversion to Word. On clicking 'convert', the last window gives the file with .doc suffix. After I save and open it the window says, "The XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents." Under "Details", it says, "Incorrect document syntax".

  • Help - problem unzipping files on Terminal

    Hi,
    I have been unzipping files (zip and rar) using Terminal for quite sometimes now. For unknown reasons, it's given me some problems unzipping today.
    When I typed cd. /desktop, as I did in the past, it suddenly showed an error:
    -bash: -bash:: command not found
    I typed "/bin/echo $PATH", as I saw other previous posts have suggested. The result:
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin
    I am not sure what that means, i.e. is it ok? or is it not? and how do I fix the problem if not ok?
    I am completely IT illiterate, especially when it comes to any computer language. So please, a simple and straight forward answer, or preferrably a step-by-step guide, will be truly appreciated.
    Many thanks for your kind assistance in advance.

    MrHoffman, thanks ever so much for the helpful answer.
    a "cd ~/Desktop" instead of "a dot and a space" did allow me to unzip my files finally!
    Just wonder, by doing what I have just done, i.e. a dot and a space and then the target directory, had I already committed the sins of damaging the "Path" (something I learned from reading other similar posts in the forum)... Basically, I just want to know if i have damaged the file contents... and if so, how bad is the damage? (so far, my Mac works fine....)
    Digress, I would have loved to stay away from using Terminal as far away as I could, since I am dreading of the thought of me ended up doing something damaging to the lovely Mac. But unfortuantely, there isn't any idiot-friendly tool available for unzipping any password-protected zip files.... Would appreciate if you could offer any alternative solution to this, i.e. other than using Terminal! (NB. I have also looked into using EZ 7z and X7zX for Mac before, both of which i just gave up in the end!)
    Anyhow, thanks! : )

  • Problems unzipping files

    Hello there,
    I tried to create two small programs: Zip and UnZip, using the java.util.zip package. The Zip file works perfectly and WinAce can read the files zipped. But the UnZip program doesn't seem to work: it unzips
    the files almost correctly. I unzipped a text file and it's readable, but except for the normal characters that appeared in the original text, some other not-displayable characters appear at certain points (quite many since the unzipped files are a few kilob bigger that the original not-zipped file). I really don't understand what the problem is. Well, actually, I didn't read any tutorial about using java.util.zip, I just read the API documentation and I sorted out a way of zipping and unzipping. Please, if you can, tell me what is the problem with the program:
    public class UnZip
         public static void main(String[] arg)
              try
                   if (arg.length < 1)
                        System.out.println("Usage: java UnZip <zip file> [to dir]");
                        System.exit(0);
                   String dir = "";
                   if (arg.length > 1)
                        dir = arg[1] + System.getProperty("file.separator");
                        File f = new File(arg[1]);
                        if (!f.exists()) f.mkdirs();
                   System.out.println("Decompressing files from file " + arg[0]);
                   ZipFile read = null;
                   try
                        read = new ZipFile(arg[0]);
                   catch (ZipException ex)
                        System.err.println("Zip error when reading file " + arg[0]);
                        System.exit(1);
                   catch (IOException ex)
                        System.err.println("I/O Exception when reading file " + arg[0]);
                        System.exit(1);
                   Enumeration en = read.entries();
                   while (en.hasMoreElements())
                        ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry) en.nextElement();
                        System.out.println("\tDecompressing file " + entry.getName());
                        FileOutputStream out;
                        try
                             out = new FileOutputStream(dir + entry.getName());
                        catch (FileNotFoundException ex)
                             System.err.println("\tCannot write down to file " + dir + entry.getName());
                             continue;
                        InputStream re = read.getInputStream(entry);
                        int av = 0;
                        while ((av = re.available()) != 0)
                             byte[] b = new byte[av < 64 ? av : 64];
                             re.read(b);
                             out.write(b);
                        out.close();
                        System.out.println("\tDone decompressing file " + entry.getName());
                   read.close();
                   System.out.println("Done decompressing files");
              catch (Exception e)
                   new File(arg[1]).delete();
                   e.printStackTrace(System.err);
    }

    It is the following code which has a swapped conditional expression,
    and also I would loop differently.
              int av = 0;
              while ((av = re.available()) != 0)
                   byte[] b = new byte[av < 64 ? av : 64];
                   re.read(b);
                   out.write(b);
              }Move the byte buffer outside, and better think in kilobytes.
    Read is waiting and forcing an actual read, so it seems
    safer than an available.
    byte[] buffer = new byte[1024];
    for (;;) {
        int nread = re.read(buffer);
        if (nread < 0)
            break;
        out.write(buffer, 0, nread);

  • Unzipping files using java.util

    I am trying to unzip files using java.util.zip
    It works fine when I am trying to unzip a file that is already residing on the server.
    But I want to unzip the file that user will upload to the server .
    My code is uploading zip file to server but not able to unzip this zip file giving error
    java.util.zip.ZipException: error in opening zip file
    What could be the problem
    I am not getting exactly
    Can you give me any clue
    Thanks

    sounds like the uploading is the problem. Are you FTPing the file? If so check that it's being transferred in binary, not ascii.

  • Unzipping files - works, but need some hlp to make it better

    Hi there!
    I am trying to unzip files using java.util.zip
    My code works If I have a parent directory for all files/folders.
    So when I unzip the structure is as -
    zipFileName -> parent folder -> child files/folders
    where, zipFileName and parent folder names are same.
    But I want to have it as
    parent folder -> child files/folders.
    Here is my code :
    public void unzipFiles(String zipFileName, String zipFolderPath, String unzipPath) {
    Enumeration entries;
    ZipFile zipFile;
    try {
    //Set up a directory name for the unzipped files
    String courseFolderName = zipFileName.substring(0, zipFileName.indexOf("."));
    //Get the zip file from its location in the "zip" folder on theServer
    String separator = File.separator;
    zipFile = new ZipFile(zipFolderPath + separator + zipFileName);
    //Set up the directories in the data store
    entries = zipFile.entries();
    while (entries.hasMoreElements()) {
    ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry)entries.nextElement();
    if (entry.isDirectory())
    String dir = entry.getName();
    System.out.println("entry :"+unzipPath + separator + courseFolderName + separator + dir);
    checkFilePath(unzipPath + separator + courseFolderName + separator + dir);
    unzippedFolders.addElement(courseFolderName + separator + dir);
    //Add the unzipped files to the data store
    entries = zipFile.entries();
    while (entries.hasMoreElements()) {
    ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry)entries.nextElement();
    if (entry.isDirectory())
    continue;
    if (debug)
    System.out.println("Extracting file: " + entry.getName());
    copyInputStream(zipFile.getInputStream(entry),
    new BufferedOutputStream(
    new FileOutputStream(unzipPath + separator + courseFolderName + separator + entry.getName())));
    zipFile.close();
    catch (IOException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    [\code]
    The above code works if the zip file is having all files under a parent folder:
    zipFileName -> parent folder -> child files/folders
    sample output:
    unzipping the files...
    entry :C:\DataStore\template\test2/IMAGES/
    Creating directory C:\DataStore\template\test2/IMAGES/
    entry :C:\DataStore\template\test2/INPUTS/
    Creating directory C:\DataStore\template\test2/INPUTS/
    otheriwse, if I have no levels under my zip level, I get an error like this:
    unzipping the files...
    Extracting file: schedule.htm
    Extracting file: IMAGES/AMTC.GIF
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\DataStore\schedule\IMAGES/AMTC.GIF (The system
    cannot find the path specified)
    Can somebody pls help me find out where I am going wrong. Any help would be really really great.
    Thanks

  • Losing audio with quicktime when emailing file

    Exporting to quicktime works great on my machine. It plays fine and has audio when I open the quicktime file. When I email it to others, they dont get the sound. Am I doing something wrong when saving.

    No, but it's creating two files, one video file and a separate soundtrack movie file. You have to send BOTH of those for them to view it properly on the other end.
    If they have winzip or some other utility used to unzip files, since you have 10.4, you can put both files into a folder and then right click or control click on the folder and choose to Create Archive which will zip the files up.
