Gimp-print vs gutenprint

Hi folks, i have a problem printing from gimp: he says that the print plugin is broken...i've looked into the pacman.log and i found gimp-print has been removed by gutenprint...
Is that normal?

  • GIMP Printing and ColorSync... ?

Since discovering I can now print (to my Epson Stylus Color 1160) printer using the GIMP drivers furnished in Tiger 10.4.11, I nevertheless seem to be missing ColorSync support.
Images (photos and Photoshop images) don't seem to be printing with reliable color rendition. (All my artwork previously had been elaborately calibrated for screen display and printing via the Epson printing software and ColorSync. That is, until Epson decided to orphan the printer by abandoning software support for Tiger and beyond.)
When I search on the Internet for an explanation of the GIMP/ColorSync issue, I find numerous articles that assert that these GIMP drivers do not support my old ColorSync (ICC) profiles, and which articles are otherwise oblique, abstruse, and equivocal.
I can't understand what I'm supposed to do:
    -- Turn off ColorSync (how?);
    -- Re-calibrate new ICC profiles for the printer (again, how? By using the ColorSync Utility?);
-- Spend a fortune on ink and paper by trial and error test printing?
If you have a simple understandable explanation of how to print my existing ColorSynced image files in this situation, I'd surely like to know! And thanks!

    Norm Caryl wrote:
I've downloaded GutenPrint 5.2.6, but haven't installed it because the docs (seem to) say that it won't reliably use the printer ICC profiles that I previously assigned via the Epson software...
The documentation has only a paragraph or two in the entire "manual" to address ColorSync.
The Gutenprint drivers are written to be used on many systems such as Linux, Mac OS X, and other *nix platforms. They were not written specifically for OS X and for use with ColorSync.
What the manual is saying is basically what I mentioned earlier. ICC profiles that were supplied by Epson for use with their own drivers paper, and ink will not produce the same output when used with a different driver such as Gutenprint. Likewise, the Epson provided ICC profiles will not produce the same results if you use third party ink or third party papers.
The Photoshop "color space" for my files is the "Adobe RGB (1998)." Not sure what will happen if I change this to sRGB for the image... (if that's possible).
I am far from expert in color managing. It may be of some benefit if you read a discussion on the Gutenprint forums at https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/forums/forum/4359/topic/3810875. Of course each printer is going to be different, but the principles outlined there would still apply. In that discussion, it was found that changing the color space to AppleRGB and then printing using "Same as Source" was getting close to the right output. You still may need to make some adjustments to the Density or Gamma controls in the Gutenprint settings.
One thing you will need to pay particular attention to is to make sure that you have the type of paper selected properly in the print window under Printer Features. Also, you will need to set the proper resolution and image type in the Gutenprint settings under Printer Features.
ColorSync profiles show up in the (Tiger) GIMP printing routine (one for each paper stock), but I'm not sure where these came from -- are they my original ICC profiles from my Epson software, or are they profiles GIMP furnishes?
The Gutenprint drivers do not provide any ICC profiles. The PPDs do contain directives to manage to the sRGB profile that comes with OS X as that is the color space that Gutenprint expects.
I was hoping there'd be a "simple" way to convert my old ColorSync profiles so that I could print them with reliable color rendition...
As I have 30 or 40 photos (of approx. 220MB) to be printed at 13" x 19", I'm a bit reluctant to go in and color balance them all in the ColorSync Utility (especially as I don't understand whether or not the ColorSync Utility is producing an ICC profile for the printer. (Or is the ColorSync Utility merely creating another screen profile?)
I have pretty much reached my knowledge limit on the use of ColorSync and the use of it with the Gutenprint drivers. As a practical matter, it is always best to experiment with smaller test prints and use copies of any images you test just to make sure you don't accidentally corrupt a good file.

  • Brother HL-1240 included Intel gimp-print drivers and Acrobat 8.1

For some reason it is hard to get Acrobat Reader to print at 100% with Brother's HL-1240 gimp-print drivers using Acrobat Reader 8.1 on a Mac Pro running 10.4.9. I have no trouble with it appearing 100% on my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo and an Epson R220, and wondered if the shrinking to 94% to fit on an 8.5" x 11 is happening due to the drivers, or the document being printed. I have a family member whose problem I'm trying to resolve remotely, so bear with me as it might take awhile to get back with some answers to your questions. Is there some setting in Acrobat Reader to default to 100% viewing?
Oh and they have an Apple 20" Cinema Display, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you.

"Fit to printable area" should be the same output as "Shrink to printable area". It should be a scaling keeping all proportions the same.
if the problem is that it seems to be printing text
    too thin?
Too "thin" as in characters being too tall and too narrow would indicate a problem with keeping the proper proportions when scaling. Try Adobe Reader scaling set to "None" and Gutenprint driver setting to "Crop". It's hard to say if it is an Adobe Reader problem or a Gutenrint driver problem. Acrobat Reader sends pictwps info to CUPS. Most other applications send pdf to CUPS.
Too "thin" as in the characters are the proper shape but just need to have "more ink on their bones" might be corrected by increasing the Density or Saturation in the Copies & Pages -> Printer Features section of the print window.
Do other applications print too thin? If all applications print too thin, it is probably a Gutenprint driver issue. Version 5.0.1 is the latest stable version. Version 5.1.3 is a development release.

  • Black and white printing using Gutenprint

My HP printer has no drivers in SL, but I can print using Gutenprint.
    The Gutenprint FAQ says
For most users, the work-around is to set the Color Model setting to Grayscale. This is not the same as printing in black and white only, but it may give you what you want.
For those users who must use black and white only, the good news is that the Quartz Filter for Black and White still exists. It's just not tied into the print window. The easiest way to use the Black and White option is as follows:
Go to print the document. Use the item "Open PDF in Preview" item under the PDF Services drop down menu at the bottom left of the print window.
When the document appears in Preview, choose Save As... from the File menu.
You can either change the name or use the Replace option when prompted. Select the output format as PDF and use the Quartz Filter to select "Black and White".
Make sure you have the name and location to save the document as you want it. Click the Save button.
The resulting document will be in Black and White and you can print it normally.
I can guess what this means, but I am not certain, so I would be glad if someone has a definitive answer.
My guess is that Grayscale usually prints using the colour cartridge, but that following this procedure lets one print using the black cartridge only.
This is an important issue. Given the cost of colour cartridges, I only want to use them when I need colour, not for plain text.
I would also be interested to know the difference between the two colour modes available, labelled Color and CMYK, but this isn't so important.

Welcome to the Apple Discussion boards.
The product brochure for the DP-C213 shows that PostScript is an optional add on. Are you sure that you have the PostScript module installed? Without the optional PostScript module, you will only get the raw PostScript code when you use the PostScript driver.
The Gutenprint generic PCL drivers do not print color. They are grayscale only.
The product brochure for the DP-C213 does show that it comes standard with the PCL 6 printer module. The best color driver would be the pxlmono/pxlcolor driver. You can download all you need from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/pxlmon o. You will need to install three packages. The pxlmono, Foomatic-RIP, and the Ghostscript package.
Now for the confusing part. When you go to set up the printer use the *"Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlcolor (recommended)"* driver. That will give you color printing. The OpenPrinting database is in error and only shows your printer to be a grayscale printer, so you *do not* want to choose the "Panasonic DP-C213 Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)" driver. That driver will only produce grayscale printing.
EDIT: The URL for the product brochure is ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/business/office/brochures/DP-C213_Brochure .pdf

    Print using "HP Photosmart P100 - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2
Wireless Setting's for Hp Laptop - Windows Xp Home
HP Photosmart C3135 - Connection "bonjour"
Print using "HP Photosmart C3100 Series"
    Corded Setting's for Macbook - Mac 10.4.8
HP Photosmart C3135 - Connection "USB"
Print using "HP Photosmart C3100 Series"
The Macbook wireless does not print with photo options, All pictures are dark and some Printed text is bigger than on USB or HP Laptop.
The Hp Laptop Wireless Works Great With Printing. But the actual software that is installed does not pick up the printer. Though I have not tried everything Yet to get the software to pick it up.
    On the Macbook with Bonjour
I go to add printer well it Auto-SeIect's the driver "HP All-in-One 4.0"
So I click Add. Then Error:-9672 comes up. So I had to Click Hp in the list then I click HP PhotoSmart P1000 Gimp-Print.
On Hp I went and plugged the printer in
    Went to "Control Panel"
    Printer's and Fax
Went to the side panel Clicked "Add Pinter"
Went through the setup and had to put the disc in.
Software came up as "HP PhotoSmart C3100 Series"
    then downloaded "Bonjour for Windows"
Plugged in the Printer into My Airport Extreme/with Built in Dial-up-Modem
Then opened up Bonjour went through the setup
Print using "HP PhotoSmart C3100 Series"
Then Deleted the USB HP PhotoSmart C3135
And kept the Bonjour HP PhotoSmart C3135
Well I had to do it this way because the "Bonjour" printer list did not have the hp driver.
Does Anyone know how to add the "HP PhotoSmart C3100 Series" Driver to the Mac list.

  • Gimp-Print and Postscript

I just purchased an HP PCL color laser printer. Ocassionally I'll need to print EPS files with it. What's the best way to accomplish this?
    1. Use Gimp-Print drivers
    2. Create a PDF and then print the document using the standard PCL language
    3. Something else (please describe)
    Thanks,
    Kelly

Best method- use the driver that came with the printer. Every app in OS X produces postscript (OK, I suppose there might be one out there that bypasses normal programming api's). Therefore - EVERY printer driver (for non-postscript printers) in OS X must translate postscript to the printer's language.
I hope this is clear - every printer driver on OS X accepts postscript input.
    Does that help?

  • Gimp-Print Driver GenericClass: Waiting for device

I am running OS X 1.4.8 and I have an HP Photosmart printer connected via USB. I installed the HP print driver and associated utilities. I have added the printer through the Printer setup utility and selected the Photosmart 1100 series driver, which uses the gimp-print 5.0.0 driver.
I can connect to the printer through HP's test and calibration utility and I can access the printer, send test pages, calibration etc. However, when sending a plain text file or any other file through the normal print driver, Nothinig prints. If you open the print monitor, it shows the message " GenericClass: waiting for device". I attempted to replace the USB cable and connect to another USB port, when you start the printer again it displays: "GIMP-PRINT: Ready to Print" and then the "GenericClass: Waiting for device" message.
I am stumped on where to go next.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I fixed my issue with the HP 3180 printer!! Here's what I did:
    1. I followed the HP document that I posted earlier step by step.
    2. I downloaded the latest drivers/software from HP, reset the printer queues and then tried to add the printer. This did not work at all.
    3. I took a look at the error log and found this:
E [19/Nov/2007:21:51:31 -0500] LoadAllClasses: Unable to open /private/etc/cups/classes.conf - No such file or directory
I went out on the MacWorld boards and found that the file in the error is deleted when the printer queues are cleared and recreated when the printer is initialized. So I'm not sure the issue is related to the message.
Since my issues started after I applied the update from Apple from the auto software update that popped up on my MacBook, I decided to try to fix it by downloading the update directly from Apple.com and reapplying it again just in case something was hosed up with the auto software update:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
After it ran, I installed the printer software and drivers and the C3180 re-established connections and printing & scanning work perfect again. Hope this helps!

  • Gimp Printing Problems

I just installed the latest version of the GIMP on Tiger (10.4.7) and I cannot get anything to print on my Epson Stylus Photo 820 injek printer.
I selected the right printer model in the setup panel, and have tried all the permuations of the options, but nothing works.
Has anyone had any success with printing out of the GIMP?

    Geesus...what a f#$%'n pain in the butt....
The only way I got the GIMP to print on a 10.4.7 intel-iMac was to download Gutenprint v5.0, ignore the outdated documentation (which points to the app Print Center on Jaguar) and figure out how to install Epson SP-820 with the CUPS+Gutenprint version of the Epson driver.
You MUST install the CUPS+Gutenprint driver for this to work (using the printer model drop-down list).
FYI: installing the drivers from support.epson.com for Mac-for-Intel does NOT work with the GIMP.

  • EPSON Stylus Color 1160 - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2 setting preferences

    Greetings.
I have the above printer and since Epson no longer produces a driver that will function under 10.4 I am using the Gimp driver. Which works fine.
The printer is connected to our server and so functions as a ‘shared printer’ in the network. The server runs 10.4.8.
However I would like to tweak the default settings for all users.
One of the things we use this printer for is to make drafts for checking text or layouts. The default setting is for an excellent print quality. I would like to change this to a lower resolution (saves ink > saves money > saves planet > reduces carbon footprint, ;-)))
Anybody know how to do this?
Does it need to be done on every individual machine? Or in the settings of the printer? And how to do it?
    I can see it over
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
If I click on any of the buttons like ‘modify the printer’ it says
Forbidden You don't have permission to access the resource on this server. <</div>
Any suggestions as to how to solve this?
    Thanks

  • Question about windows printer canon bj5200 can't print or see in Leopard

    Hello;
this has been a problem for me in Tiger as well, I have a windows workgroup network and have a canon bj5200 share on a windows xp machine, I've done some research and can't seem to find the solution on how print from Leopard (previous Tiger) to the shared printer. I choose + to add the printer and then windows it shows my network name but nothing after that. Solutions anyone?

You will either need to enable the Guest account on the Windows computer or create an SMB queue using the account details for the XP PC. In Tiger this was done using the Advanced setting which was available after holding the Option key while pressing More Printers. Not sure if the same process exists for Leopard - will have to check on the MacPro at work or someone with Leopard at home can confirm.
Also, you probably won't be able to use the Canon provided driver as they are usually written to work only with a direct USB connection from the Mac. So you have to find a compatible GIMP-Print (know Gutenprint) driver for the 5200. However the Canon BJ5200 is not listed as a supported device under Gutenprint v5.1.3 nor PrintFab. Are you sure of the model? There is a iP5200...

  • Printing not working - 10.4.10 to Samsung ML-1710 (USB)

Sometime around my upgrade to OS 10.4.10, printing broke to my normally reliable Samsung ML-1710, connected via USB to my Mac Pro.
What happens now is that if I go into Printer Setup Utility, the ML-1710 shows up in the list, but when I click Add, I get a strange error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. service-error-service unavailable."
I've tried all the usual troubleshooting things: repairing permissions, running OnyX to flush all caches, reinstalling Samsung's drivers, rebooting, powering the printer up and down, etc. The printer is seen normally by System Profiler, but Printer Setup Utility refuses to add it.
I should admit that I've installed several aftermarket printer-related utilities in an effort to get this to work: Gimp-Print, CUPS, GutenPrint, ESP, etc. Latest version of each of these. None of them help. But I also don't know how to uninstall each of them. I have no idea if this might be confusing the Mac, and no idea how to get the Mac back to its default state so I can simply print via USB again.
    Any tips? (Desperate!)
P.S. One other related (?) thing I should mention that in System Prefs > Sharing, Printer Sharing is switched on. But when I click it, nothing happens -- I can't switch it off. I don't know how to force it off, and don't know if it might have anything to do with the failure to be able to add the Samsung as a valid printer.

If you updated CUPS to one of the publicly released new versions then you may very well find printing no longer works. I had the same problem when I did a CUPS update. Unfortunately, simply reinstalling the version provided with OS X wasn't possible because that version wasn't available for downloading.
So, the 'bad' news is you should reinstall OS X. You can avoid erasing the drive by doing an Archive and Install:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Drivers for Canon S400 Printer HELP!!!

    Hello,
I'm trying to get my old Canon S400 printing, but I am having no luck. I have downloaded drivers 4.1.5 and 4.8.3 however when it came to printing, my printer was recognized as a "Canon FJ360" and when I tried to print, blank sheets came out even though I have topped up all of the ink cartridges. Does anybody know any fixes or other drivers that I could use in this case? I have the printer connected through an AirPort Express N.

I "think" the included Gimp-Print drivers include the S400 - you should try that for troubleshooting. (I say "think" because I have updated my Gimp-Print to Gutenprint:)
