Given Word, Whether InDesign

I am struggling with whether to buy and learn InDesign. I have used Microsoft Word to create and publish several books. Some of them ended up on Google Books (a direct conversion to .pdf) and others I published privately using Kinko's (also in .pdf). In the process I have greatly enriched my vocabulary of obscenities regarding Microsoft software. Without thinking ahead I wrote all of them in standard 8.5 x 11 inch format, 12 point New York font so I could proof them with my printer and standard paper. They include complex tables, spreadsheets, photographs, multiple sections and pagination schemes, etc. all of which pushed the limits of Word and my frustration. These were tests of endurance that depleted my primary creative writing energy. Now I find to my dismay that the 8.5x11 format is no good for a conventionally published book if I have any hope of reaching a larger audience. I have discovered that the preferred book publishing formats, such as 9x6 and 8.5x5.5 are incompatible with my finished files which must be reformatted almost page by page.I simply don't have the heart to do all that unplanned extra work And for my new books I am hoping for some software that I can input all the text, graphics, photos, tables, etc. just one time only and then as my last step decide on an appropriate size format without further effort. My online research about InDesign did not answer my burning questions.
What can I realistically expect from InDesign importing my finished 8.5x11 books?
How difficult and how long is the InDesign learning curve?
Any wisdom out there will be greatly appreciated.

InDesign requires you to think ahead as well. If you are planning to change page sizes at the very last moment, ID can help you (use Layout Adjustment to size your frames; exclusively use inline figures and tables, or anchored objects) but it's not realistic to expect a complicated layout to stay the same when the page size changes.
Much as I hate to suggest, perhaps Framemaker is more appropriate for you?
FrameMaker requires as much advance planning to accommodate painless, document- and book-wide last-minute layout changes as InDesign, perhaps more, because it lacks a counterpart to InDesign's intelligent format-adjustment technology for repositioning page objects that are outside the main story.
Much as I really hate to suggest any weakness in FrameMaker, if you're suggesting FrameMaker because you expect that its ability to significantly reformat a document, by importing master pages from another template, is nearly trouble-free, it's not. True, it works so well because most FrameMaker document layouts consist of a single threaded story - aka "text flow" in Frame-ese. Objects anchored outside text frames are used instead of page objects. And FrameMaker's "floating" attribute for inline tables and anchored frames, with sufficient planning and careful placement of these anchored objects, is a terrific help. It back-flows text into the unsightly gaps caused by floating objects that flow ahead to the next text frame or page when there's insufficient room for them in the current container. InDesign anchored objects lack this floating attribute.

  • Clicking from Word to InDesign not working

    I am trying to copy and paste from MS Word 2011 into the lastest CC InDesign 2014 (10.1.0.71) (on a Mavericks 10.9.4) and it is not working to simply click from Word into InDesign. I must use the toggle shortcut  (Command + Tab) to activate the workspace in InDesign, then click my targeted text box.
    This is an extra step in my workflow and has never been a problem in previous versions or any other software for that matter. Clicking a window should make that application active.
    Please HELP! Fix!
    Thanks!
    K

    Just realizing this is an issue across displays. Any software that I have on monitor B will not allow me to click into InDesign on Monitor A to activate the InDesign application. I must toggle, or click another application's window then click InDesign, to make it active.

  • Pasting Text from Word to InDesign (need preserve selected formatting)

    When I import text from Word to Indesign I want to preserve the Italic and semi-bold but nothing else.
    The Indesign document has a template set up with ipsum text styled with semi-bold and normal text as well as a character style for the italic.
    When I paste the text into InDesign I want the ital and semi-bold to translate into the already styled text frame with no other formatting from Word.
    As there will be hundreds of text frames like this I want the ital etc to automatically translate. I also need to paste text over these templated text frames (see attached.
    Cheers,

    Use File > Place and check the import options instead of Copy/Paste.

  • Importing Word into InDesign, problem with styles

    OS 10.6, CS5
    Hi everyone,
    Does anyone have any experience with importing styled Word docs into InDesign?
    Editors style their Word documents with some basic styles (Text, References, Headline, etc.) using a Word template that I created. Designers use import options to match the Word styles to the ID styles. This worked fine in Word 2004 and InDesign CS3: Word  "text" style would map on import to the InDesign "text" style, even though they had totally different attributes. Superscripts, italics, etc. would be respected as local overrides in InDesign.
    Then we upgraded to CS5. Automatic mapping on import no longer seems to work: After importing text, all the styles in InDesign have local overrides assigned to them that don't make sense (hyphenation exceptions, tab settings). So I'm left with importing the Word styles, using auto-renaming so that InDesign explicitly does NOT match styles.
    Then delete the Word styles one by one from the paragraph style panel, replacing with the desired ID style.
    This has gone on for several months and we've now upgraded to Office 2011 but that hasn't solved the problem.
    With Word 2011 docx files, the import works almost like it did in CS3, the styles almost come in cleanly: If the style in Word has NO local overrides, such as italics or superscripts, the InDesign style is correctly applied. The problem is those local overrides in Word--InDesign not only respects the italic or superscript, it also respects the font attribute. All the Word styles are Times New Roman so all superscripts in InDesign are coming in as superscript + TNR. (see screenshot)
    Are we left with our original work-around? Importing styles then manually deleting and replacing them?
    This is frustrating because it used to be smooth and seamless and while some new features of CS5 are great, it's annoying that it's broken this fundamental function!
    I've tried saving the Word files as doc or rtf instead of docx but this doesn't make a difference in this problem.
    Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

    I'm an author / publisher.  I write in Word and I publish with InDesign. When I'm in the review stages, I like to edit my text in Word, so I export the text as an RTF.  When I import it back into InDeisgn I often find that some of the styles have annoying overrides from Word that break things.  (1) Paragraph style stuff about hyphenation and (2)  Characters style stuff about  Character direction: Left-to-Right style.
    * Easy global  fix:  select the whole text open the Window | Style | Paragraph window, and click the button on the bottom to remove all overrides. And do the same for the Window | Style | Character window. Before doing this, I like to check that I don’t have any italics that are in the file as overrides rather than being in there as part of a header style or as part of the Emphasis style that I try to use throughout the text instead of just an italic override. It makes me uneasy to remove all overrides, as I always worry there might be an important one I could have kept.
    * (1) Specific fix for the hyphenation overrides: Make sure the hyphenation settings in the individual InDesign paragraph styles match, so far as possible, the Word global hyphenation settings in the Page Layout | Hyphenation dialog of Word.    InDesign will import any Word hyphenation settings that don’t match the InDesign doc styles as overrides.
    Specifically,  set InDesign Hyphen Limit to ( say) 1 and set Word | Hyphenation | Hyphenation Options | Limit consecutive hyphens to the same number (say) 1. Also set InDesign Paragraph Style Hyphenation | Hyphenation Zone to (say) 0.5” and set Word | Hyphenation | Hyphenation Options | Hyphenation Zone to the same number (say) 0.5”.  And turn off all the InDesign optional hyphenation check boxes at the bottom of the dialog, and the turn off the two check boxes in the Word Hyphenation Options box as well.In Word you should also set Hyphenation | Automatic.  If you cautiously set Word Hyphenation | None the import will throw a “Hyphenation” override on the hyphenated paragraph styles, even though this maikes no sense.
    You may still pick up some hyphenation related overrides on your heder styles, if you have set the headers not to hyphenate.  You can either dump the overrides in InDesign or you can set your header styles to hyphenate…and be careful not have any headers actually be longer than one line.
    (2) I still haven't found the fix for the Left-to-Right text override.

  • Word to indesign using xslt

    Hi All,
    I have copyedited word document and it was styled.
    Eg:
    Word Styles Name
    "Chapter Title", "Chapter Sub Title", "Para", "Table Caption", "Box", " Para Indent" etc...
    InDesign Paragraph Styles:
    "CT", "CS", "Body", "TC", "BX", "Body Ind" etc...
    How do i create a XSLT using word and indesign style Mapping.
    Please suggest me.
    Hurix

    Some more detail would help. I'm guessing you need to do this beacuse you are using some sort of XML workflow? If you are  not, then you can simply show the import options when placing a word file and map the styles there.

  • Telugu - Use font in Word and InDesign

    For work purposes, I have to create a bilingual brochure (English - Telugu) but I'm having huge problems with finding a font that works... It needs to be usable in both Word and InDesign and also able to combine Telugu with English. Normally we use Frutiger and Meta, so any font that suits these styles would be great. Hopefully you can help me out, your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading my question!

    If you're using CS4 with the hidden "World-Ready Composer" functionality (read this article), you might be able to get Telugu to render correctly. Otherwise, you're probably out of luck. Telugu requires support for rendering methods that aren't in any other version of InDesign, so I doubt that your probem is really to be found in the fonts, as you suspect.
    In languages that InDesign doesn't support, I sometimes have success back-converting to ancient pre-Unicode fonts, but I've never done so with Telugu, so I can't say for sure that such a solution would work for you.

  • Guiones cortos al exportar Word a Indesign CS4

    Prueba a importar ficheros en formato rtf en vez de formato word, diremos

  • Matching styles between Word and InDesign?

    In Microsoft Word, can you create new style names (both character AND paragraph) same as you can in InDesign? and if those names match those in an InDesign template you are flowing them into, will the text come in STYLED like they are set up in InDesign?

    Anne-Marie Concepcion has produced a comprehensive tutorial on using Word and InDesign together. I would highly recommend anyone using these two applications to have a look at it:

  • Printing all possible combinations of a given word.

    Well I'm supposed to print all possible combinations of a given word(I'm writing this for the benefit of those who might not have guessed this from the subject). I've got some code but its horribly wrong. Could anyone point out any mistakes.
    public class Try
        public void display(String s)
            char ch[]=s.toCharArray();
            for(int i=0;i<ch.length;i++)
                String word="";
                word+=ch;
    char c[]=new char[s.length()];
    for(int j=0;j<ch.length;j++)
    if(ch[j]!=ch[i])
    c[j]=ch[j];
    for(int j=0;j<ch.length;j++)
    for(int k=0;k<ch.length;k++)
    if(c[j]!=c[k])
    word+=c[k];
    word+=c[j];
    System.out.println(word);

    Me and Lucifer have been workin on this program for ages.... we cant quite understand your pseudo code.. could you elaborate a bit more on how it works ??
    Meanwhile this is the dysfunctional program weve managed to come up with so far:
    public class SHAM
        public void display(String s)
            char c[]=s.toCharArray();
            for(int i=0;i<c.length;i++)
                String word="";
                char c1[]=new char[c.length-1];
                int a=0;
                for(int l=0;l<c.length;l++)
                    if(i!=l)
                        c1[a++]=c[l];
                for(int j=0;j<c.length-1;j++)
                    char c2[]=c1;
                    word=c[i]+word;
                    if(j+1!=c.length)
                        char t=c2[j];
                        c2[j]=c2[c2.length-1];
                        c2[c2.length-1]=t;
                    for(int k=0;k<c2.length;k++)
                        word+=c2[k];
                    System.out.println(word);
    }And this is my coding of your pseudo code:
    public class WordCombo2
        public void combo(String s)
            getCombos(s.toCharArray(), s.length());
        private void getCombos(char[] c,int n)
            if (n==1)
                print(c);
                System.out.println();
            else
                for (int i=0;i<c.length;i++)
                    if (i==0 && i<n)
                        c=c[n-1];
    n--;
    getCombos(c,n);
    c[i]=c[n-1];
    private void print(char c[])
    for (int i=0;i<c.length;i++)
    System.out.print(c[i]+" ");
    I really dont understand how this is supposed to work so i dont know whats wrong :( Im sorry this program is just totally baffling me, and on top of that recursion kind of confuses me.

    I need to check the given word from the user input is a dictionary word or not.
    if it is a dictionary word then i am doing some functionality.
    how can i do that?
    thanx in advance

    Load a dictionary of words into a Map of some sort. Use the user's word as the key into the map - if the map returns null, then it can be assumed to not be a real word. You will probably want to provide some mechanism so that the user can populate the map with proper names and other stuff that's not in the dictionary.
    To obtain a (raw text) dictionary with which to populate the Map you could look at the files in the /usr/share/dict folder on most Linux systems. If you don't have one to hand you can probably obtain and download one with a bit of Googling.

    Use those.
    The chances are quite small that you will offend your Chinese readership by setting text in an overtly Japanese font like Mincho or Kozuka - but the chance is a non-zero chance. All the right glyphs are there, of course (thank you Unihan), but typographic standards differ between the two languages, and there's no sense in taking the risk.

    I must admit I only see the difference because Japanese fonts usually do not include a "full" set of glyphs (at least, not the "usual" 3,000 to 10,000). Joel, care to point out some tell-tale glyph forms?

    At Word - normal Arabic text.
    At Indesign - wrong.

    See copy/pasted hebrew text is backwards and/or search the forum for "Arabic" (it has been asked numerous times before).

    It's the PDF.
    Usually, you can copy text out of a PDF, but there is no guarantee *at all*. Older software used to take shortcuts to subset fonts: first character it encountered got coded as #1, the next as #2, etc. etc. If you do a search & replace of each of the nonsense characters, you'll slowly see the original text appearing (thst's not as simple as it sounds, though).
    A similar "problem" is that sometimes spaces don't get copied (there is no need for a "Space Character" in a PDF), and that you cannot copy contiguous lines of text as a single paragraph. All of it is because a PDF is not intended nor designed to be re-used after creation.
    If you really need this text and don't want to type it in, try to get hold of the original file.

    In OS X Pages '09 v4.3, do not be tempted to File > Save... copy as Word document. Instead, you want to export (or Share as Mail), both the PDF and the Word Documents.
    If you choose Share > Send as Mail > PDF (and/or Word), make sure that in Apple Mail, that your composition window has Send Windows-Friendly Attachments selected. You can enable this from the paper-clip icon on the Mail composition window toolbar.

  • Copying Japanese text from Word into InDesign CS5 - possible?

    Hi,
    I created an advert in English, and now the marketer has asked me to make a Japanese version.
    They have given me a Word Document with the Japenese text in it (in more or less the same paragraph structure to the English one) with instructions of what goes where.
    When I copy the paragraps into Indesign CS5, the font is just squares and shapes, not text.
    Is it possible to get the Japanese text working in InDesign? Is there a specific font selection I have to use?
    Thanks

    The group of Japanese fonts is the one containing Kozuka Mincho.  You do not need the  World-ready composer for simple left-to-right Japanese, and non-Japanese InDesign may do what you need.  If you need Japanese-specific text processing features (e.g., vertical text, automated application of "word" breaking rules), some are available in Adobe Illustrator and explained in its help files.  Or you could try Harbs' World Tools Pro.
