Global Keyboard Shortcut for Text-Entry

I have found what seem to be extremely simple instructions for creating a Keyborad Shortcut which, when pressed in any app, will cause a string of text to be "typed." I need this because I have a problem typing numbers without messing them up. Let's say I want to have a command key (e.g. Shift-Control-Command-c) which would cause "+1-323-555-1221" to be entered wherever I am (TextEdit, a box in a web browser, whatever). Here are the instructions I've followed:
1. Go into "Automator" and create a "Service."
2. Set the service to "recive no inpout" in "any application"
3. Drag "Run AppleScript" from the left column and then set the text exactly as follows:
       tell application "System Events"
         keystroke "+1-323-555-1212"
       end tell
4. Save the script with a name (e.g. "MyAutoTextScript")
     (note that at this point, if I press green "Run" button inside Automator,
       "+1-323-555-1212" WILL be typed write into the script editor window,
       so that seems good, no?!
5. Go into System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyborad Shortcuts -> Services, and find "MyAutoTextScript"
6. For "MyAutoTextScript", set a shortcut using "Add Shortcut".
SO... I've done all of this and AAAAAARRRRGH, it doesn't work! When I go into any app at all and press this key combination - I tried a bunch of them - it just does nothing. Tried TextEdit, Terminal, etc., etc. No text is entered. Nothing happens.
At first I thought maybe the Keyborad Shortcut combo I chose was a conflict, but supposedly, it's supposed to tell me if there's a comflict (though I've tested that by trying a combo that I KNOW is taken and it does *not* tell me of a conflict (strange!), but anyway, no matter WHAT combination I try, NOTHING.
I really would appreciate help with this. I'd rather not use some crazy third-party app for something like this which seems like it should be so simple. And I need this because of the disorder I have to live with which causes me to muss up these numbers.
Help is much appreciated!
Thanks.
Alex

Same thoughts.
Spotify connect via mac. Play, pause, next previous works well with the keyboard shortcuts. However, for volume control using the the tiny volume slider is not ideal.
Any workaround would be greatly appreciated.

  • Keyboard shortcuts for text selection not working in Flash CC

    In the new Code Editor in Flash CC running on Mac OS X, most standard Keyboard Shortcuts for traversing through the text work as expected (as the Operating System works globally) but there is one that doesn't and it's I think the most important one.
    Hitting "OPTION + SHIFT + [right or left arrow keys]" to select words doesn't work. Hitting "OPTION + [right or left arrow keys]" works as expected, moving the cursor to the next word or break point, but adding shift doesn't do the selection.
    I don't understand why this changed since it's a basic OS global shortcuts, and every other program behaves the way it should. Flash CS6 running on the same system behaves fine, but Flash CC doesn't. If you have ever written code, you know that any second that a programmers hand doesn't have to leave the keyboard to search for the mouse is invaluable, and this has forced me to stop using Flash CC and use Flash CS6 to edit my Action Script classes becuase it's unusable otherwise.
    These shortcuts are also not listed in the keyboard shortcuts for the program, so I can't change the default behavior. Does anybody know if there's a way to set it back to the way it was before, or just disable special text shortcuts so that selecting text behaves like any other application in the operating system?

    Amy~ Yep the lasso tool was what I verified with another user. 'L' seems to be bound indefinitely to loop through different types of lasso tools and it was annoying them because they just wanted L to be the regular freehand lasso. I removed 'L' from being an option on the polygon lasso and even set it explicitly to SHIFT+L as well as set the lasso tool to a completely different keyboard combo. 'L' still cycled through lassos haha. It needs some fixes.

  • How to enable keyboard shortcuts for configuration entry point?

    Hello All,
        In my process model, I have a configuration entry point sequence (sequence). I can able to select the corresponding entry from the menu bar ie. configure --> options (for eg). Now I need to have a keyboard shortcut for the same. In my case if I press (for eg) ctrl+w, the configuration entry point sequence must be called.
    Note - I have to do this using .NET programmatically.
    Is there any way I can incorporate this mechanism...?
    Thanks
    Arun

    Hello Arun,
    At this time there is not anyway to customize the keyboard shortcut keys for menu items you add to the TestStand sequence editor.  R&D is looking into implementing this in a future version of TestStand.  I'll pass along your feedback to them, and let them know there are others interrested in this feature.

  • Keyboard shortcuts for text editing [Home-End]

    Greetings.
    Is there a way for me to change the text navigations keys
    in OSX for mapings that would react like any other Linux/windows system ?
    for example pressing the end button brings me to the end of the document instead of the end of the line... home brings me at the begening of the document...
    instead i have to use the CTL -> and CTL <-
    wich is a bit weird for me being an old windows programmer.
    i'd love to change that setting system wide, is that possible ?
    thank you
    Sandro.

  • Keyboard shortcut for caption entry?

    Ctrl-K gets you to the keyword entry area, which can be very handy when assigning keywords to many files in succession.
    I couldn't find the corresponding shortcut to get to the title and caption fields in metadata.  Does one exist?

    Jim,
    Since titles and captions are generally different for each image, you can enter the title for an image and when completed, hit Ctrl+RtArrow and it will take you to the next image and remain in the title field.  Then when finished with that group/folder/collection, you can go back to the start and do the same for Captions.  I find it speeds things up materially.  In addition, if the title/caption is the same, you can Ctrl-LfArrow back to the prior image, hit Ctrl+C to copy, then Ctrl-RtArrow and Ctrl-V to paste in the current image.  Then modify a bit if not exactly the same.
    Give it a try.  I think you will find it works well for these fields that generally differ between images.

  • Is it possible to define a global keyboard shortcut for Exposure Adjustment?

    I often find myself having to get out of full-screen mode or having to pull up the Develop or Library module from the hidden right panel just to adjust exposure and nothing else (it is my most common adjustment).
    Is there some way to globally define a key so I can adjust exposure without having to exit full-screen?

    Globally? No.
    However, if you click on the word exposure, you can indeed adjust exposure with the + or - keys.
    I believe you'd have to do this on each photo, and if you click on another word in the Basic panel then that slider is now controlled by + or - (for example, if you click on contrast, then the + or - keys adjust contrast).

  • Keyboard shortcuts for functions inside paragraph styles panel possible?

    I would like to assign keyboard shortcuts for functions inide the paragraph styles panel in PS CS6.
    It seems that no option to do this  is exposed - ist this correct?

    That's an interesting approach and it made me aware about menu item insertation - but unfortunately none of the suggested works.
    Clear overrides when executed by button can work both on selections of text and on complete text blocks, the recorded version of
    pressing the button disregards that there's a selection and therefore only works globally. The menu insertation method can not deal
    with existing selections either - it's entry is greyed out in the actions panel when portions of the text are selected.

  • Assigning Global Keyboard Shortcut to Display Home Folder

    Hi there,
    I've done some hunting to determine if there is a way to assign a global keyboard shortcut to display a finder window displaying one's home folder contents. I don't see how I can do it using "Keyboard Shortcuts" in system preferences. Does anyone know if there is a way to accomplish this?
    Thanks!

    you can't make a keyboard shortcut like that that will work from any application using keyboard system preferences.
    You can do it with a 3rd party app as follows.
    paste the following into script editor and save it as a script or an application.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Finder"
    make new Finder window
    open home
    activate
    end tell</pre>
    then use a 3rd part application launcher to bind a global shortcut to it. Try Quicksilver, Butler, ikeys or Quickeys for that.

  • How do I generate a list of keyboard shortcuts for any given application

    I want to generate a list of keyboard shortcuts for all of the applications I have on my Mac. I want the list to be a simple text (or rtf) file that I can edit and organize. (By edit, I don't mean change the shortcuts, only the report of them.)
    I was using Key Cue, but it does not let me save the list to a text file.
    I want this for several purposes. One is to have a easy to reference list of shortcuts to learn. Another is to find unused key combinations that I can use for my own keyboard shortcuts that I create with DefaultKeyBinding.dict.
    Note: The program doesn't have to an OS X app. A program that runs from a shell without a GUI is plenty adequate.
    If there is a way to read the keyboard commands from a plist list or other such file, and any of you know the format for these or where I can find them, I can write a Perl script myself to do it.

    Well, the info is stored in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
    PlistPro has a way to convert it to ASCII, but you'll srtill have work to do, as...

  • How do I change the keyboard shortcut for Cycle through open documents in PS CC for Mac?

    Sorry to bug the community with such a seemingly inconsequential task, but I am seriously tired of using the awkward default keyboard shortcut for cycling through open docs in PS.  I'd like to change it to what I am used in in Chrome, which is Cmd+Option+[left] or {right} arrow keys.  I noticed this is not a command listed in the in keyboard shortcuts, for whatever reason.  Where on Earth can I change this?
    If it is not possible to do it by default, is there a plug-in or a change to the code that will allow this basic functionality?
    Thanks again guys and gals!

    As far as I know, you can't. It's "hard wired" in.  Not even Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts is allowed  to change it.
    However I did find this tip:
    Anyway i never found tabs in Adobe application useful, instead i prefer the old school method: simply switch off tabs feature via illustrator/ preferences/ user interface/ open documents as tabs. Then in Mac preferences panel, under keyboard, just search for the “focus on next application window” field (under menu, keyboard and text) and assign a shortcut if the default option doesn't fit you. And there is now you can easily switch between open documents!.
    The best part of this is that it can be used in all mac applications, not only Adobe ones. And remember, if you want this working on Indesign, Photoshop, etc be aware of first switch off the tab features so that the system could “see” multiple documents opened not only one single tabbed document.

    Activate and define shortcuts
    i        Activate shortcuts
    By default, shortcut keys are deactivated. If you want to use shortcuts, you must first activate them by choosing Default Navigation Bar.
    ii        Change shortcuts
    You can define your own shortcut keys by deleting the key that appears in column Shortcut and entering the key of your choice.
    iii        Display shortcuts in application
    If you want the shortcut keys to be displayed in the application, choose Show Keyboard Navigation Shortcuts in Menu.
    what i am looking for is keyboard shortcuts like, F4 or F8 we use in CRM GUI, these will be for use by end users (agents of IC) for creating order entries and other functions....
    Thanks in adv,
    points will be rewarded

    Hello,
    Maybe a silly remark but if you define shortcut "K" for entry X you can use the shortcut by pressing ESC + K. In other words, you should always use the ESC in combination with the choosen shortcut.
    Hope this solves your problem!
    Rewards points if useful,

  • Customized keyboard shortcuts for microsoft Word not working

    Hi,
    My Macbook Pro retina 15' with an updated Yosemite iOS 10.10.1 has an american keyboard. I am trying to create keyboard shortcuts for brazilian accent marks to use in Microsoft Word. I went to "system preferences", "keyboard", "shortcuts", "App Shortcuts", added Microsoft Word and, for the brazilian accent mark " ˜ ", which in the original keyboard is obtained with "option+n", I set the shortcut "option+left arrow".
    It just does not work. I created other shortcuts for other brazilian accent marks with the other arrows + control but none of them worked.
    Can anyone tell me what went wrong?
    Thanks!

  • Change keyboard shortcut for "Find"

    The default keyboard shortcut for the "find" function is Cmd-Opt-F. As you know, for virtually every other Mac app (if not all Mac apps), the shortcut for "find" is simply Cmd-F. In iTunes, though, Cmd-F turns the visualiser full-screen mode on and off. I never use the visualiser, and decades of Mac use have hard-wired my fingers for Cmd-F to be "find." I know that there is a method in System Preferences by which to change or assign associations between drop-down menu items and keyboard shortcuts, but there is no menu item for "find" so that method seems like a dead end.
    Is there a way to replace Cmd-Opt-F with Cmd-F in iTunes?
    Help, please!!!

    to be quite honest i dont no how exactly to do this,
    i just know it can be done. i have had no problem
    opening .plist files in vi-make sure you are in root
    account for system files.
    They (the .plist files) don't seem particularly readable in vi -- they seem to contain a lot of binary content. In earlier versions of OS X they were plain text and easily edited.....
    Solaris huh? how powerful
    is that? i dont know much about solaris . . . . like
    to try it though. recommendations?
    It's a more "traditional" Unix, meaning that it's very powerful, fairly bulletproof, very configurable, and pretty obtuse if you're not familiar with it. I like my Mac better!

  • KDE - Global keyboard shortcuts not working

    My global keyboard shortcuts have stopped working in KDE. When I try to open "Shortcuts and Gestures" in the System Settings, it freezes, and eventually needs to be terminated. Any ideas what could be causing this? I don't see any related recent updates in my pacman.log. I'm not even sure how to go about troubleshooting this.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
    First, sorry to re-up that post after such a long time.
    So, for some reasons, I had the same shortcuts problem since I installed Archlinux on my computer (more than ten months ago).
    Shortcuts work when I start my computer up, but after a while (and for no reasons), it just stops working.
    That problem is very annoying as I have to do everything using the mouse (and for someone like me who is used to shortcuts, it's very hard..... and long).
    And, today, I finally managed to get shortcuts working.
    And, the problem seems to come from the Dual Screen with my Nvidia graphic card.
    I don't know why, but if I unplug my TV (HDMI connexion), shortcuts just work perfectly. If I plug my TV and set X for DualView, then after a while shortcuts don't work (or very badly).
    I have no idea why... also, don't know if the issue is from KDE or Nvidia (I would say KDE as sometimes, when pressing Alt+Tab, the focus goes on the desktop of the TV, and then shortcuts don't work).
    Anyhow, hope this will help people having the same issue.
    And, of course, if you have any idea on how to fix that problem I would be very grateful (because, I really like having my TV as a second screen).
