Gnome 2.24 lock screen

Is there a way to change the background image for gnome-screensaver lock screen?

Just change /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/background-default.jpg to anything else, say a black bg.
Good luck!

  • Lock screen in gnome 3.2

    Before the upgrade the upgrade to gnome 3.2 the following feature was working ok: whenever the laptop lid is closed the system suspends to RAM, whenever the laptop lid is opened up, the system resumes and the screen is locked. The screen lock feature was only enabled after
    gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-use-screensaver 'false'
    (as per wiki instructions)
    After the upgrade to gnome 3.2, the lock screen feature is not available anymore. I have checked the keys available in  org.gnome.power-manager and lock-use-screensaver does no appear anymore. As a matter of fact, lock-use-screensaver does not appear anywhere. This means that either something has gone wrong with my update, or this feature has been removed in the new gnome version. Anyone else observes the same?

    There is a switch in >System Settings > Screen
    Is that not sufficient?

  • GNOME 3.8, Dual Monitor - Lock Screen Problem

    I don't know if this is the best place to post this, but here it goes.
    If I use a dual monitor configuration in GNOME, when I lock the screen, X hangs.
    I can still access a TTY and restart GDM.
    I don't know where I can find any useful information about what is going on, but maybe someone can point me into the right direction.

    Have you tried to enable sna ? A lot o problem with gnome and GDM 3.8 seems to be solved that way.
    To do so, create this file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
    and add in it:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    EndSection

    What i mean is that i don't get something like the nice login screen from GDM ... but i get a password promt similar to the old style GDM....
    Any ideas? is that the expected behaviour?

    Any idea ?

    Yes, it doesn't work.
    Screen lock only works when you suspend through GNOME's status menu. If you suspend or hibernate using the power button, your screen is not locked after resume. The problem is a configuration failure in dconf.
    For me it is never locked.
    Except lock-use-screensaver, all the configurations lock-* are at true. Is it correct ?

  • GNOME lock screen lag

    Hiya.
    In the GNOME lock screen, I get a tiny lag (~1 second) while rolling the lock wallpaper up (not sure how you call it). It goes nice & smooth, and then, just before it's about to disappear, it lags for a moment, so I see about a quarter of it. Then it unlags and I can start typing.
    Has anybody experienced this too, or is it just my one-core saying GNOME's too heavy for it?

    I ran Gnome on a single core with a crappy 258MB graphics card and it felt sluggish. It's resource intensive if you compare it to other DEs. With 4 cores and an SSD, it's much smoother :-)

  • [SOLVED] gnome-screensaver bug? unintended lock screen behaviour

    Everytime I close my laptop lid, the screen locks. I am fine with this EXCEPT when I am using two screens. I watch movies with my laptop and I like to close the lid because it blocks my reciever from getting the signal from my remote to change the volume. With gnome 3.4, I have not been able to do this unless I disable lock screen completely.
    [conner@arch-laptop ~]$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power

    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power time-action 120
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power time-critical 300
    As you can see in the middle of this code block that closing the lid is supposed to do nothing but that is not the case. What I want is for the screen to lock when I close my laptop lid only if there is one screen or not at all. I could disable the lock screen completely through gsettings but that is not what I want either. Any help would be much appreciated and no I do not want to use xscreensaver

    bump. any ideas. has this bug already been reported?
    Edit: Found a way to fix this. Go into brightness and screen, then change lock off when screen turns blank. So basically, changing laptop lid close in gnome tweak tool or in gsettings to nothing doesn't matter since in the brightness and lock, the setting is to lock screen whenever it is turned off and obviously the screen is turned off since closing the lid does on just about every laptop. Marking as solved.

  • [SOLVED] KDE Plasma 5 | Lock Screen Issues

    Everytime my computer locks - whether it be manually or automaticly, I get this lock menu with 3 options. The first option has my username and my avatar, which prompts me for my password. Everytime I type in the correct password, the screen turns black and then reloads the lock screen. Which makes it impossible for me to log back into my session leaving me unable to leave my computer on ever. I can create a new Session from the same menu but when ever I do create a new Session after being locked out, not a single app will launch. And I know I am putting in the correct password because when I purposly put in an incorrect password; the screen doesn't turn black, it just gives me a diffrent prompt. Another issue I am facing with KDE at the moment is about 80% of the time when I shut down my computer, I get a crash report from most of the applications running, for expamle kwin. I'm only saying this incase it is relevant, it is annoying but at least it doesn't prevent me from getting work done. Also, I used KDE's suggested SDDM for login.

    Oh, that really sucks, I like to use Arch for gaming on Linux so i dont think either of those sound preferable, but I think I will just try to downgrade nvidia then. Gnome atcually has worse issues with the latest nvidia drivers which sucks as well. Thank you for finding this.

  • Xfce: No lock screen and unclean filesystem due to hibernate

    Two issues.
    I have Arch running with Xfce on a netbook and I've been having all sorts of trouble with Xfce Power Manager. At first, it seemed like it wouldn't obey my settings because my screen would blank after 10 minutes regardless, but then I found this workaround (reply #2) which seems to have taken care of that. My next problem is that when I resume from Suspend, there is no lock screen asking me for my password. I read around and saw that Xfce uses xscreensaver to lock the screen by default, but I don't have that installed, and I'd rather not if I don't have to. But this thread is four years old, so I was wondering if now there is a simpler solution to make Xfce Power Manager properly lock the screen.
    Second, Hibernate doesn't seem to work at all. It shuts down my computer as expected, but when I power it back up I see the POST, GRUB, and Arch starts to boot again. When udev starts to check for uevents, I get a slew of errors; something like
    Filesystem is NOT Clean
    Trans replayed: mountid42, transid 2214, desc 2505, len 10, commit 2516, next trans offset 2499 //There are about 20-40 of these each with different numbers, except for mountid.
    Replaying journal: Done.
    Reiserfs journal '/dev/sda7' in blocks [18..8211]: 19 transactions replayed
    The /dev/sda7 partition is where I put /var. I have my boot messages kept to tty1 but I can't scroll up far enough to capture all of the text. This doesn't happen when I boot normally. Suspend also works fine, other than not locking my screen and presenting me with a password dialogue upon resume.
    Does anyone have any suggestions for either or both issues?

    Regarding the lock screen, if you look at the script /usr/bin/xflock4, you can see that XFCE can use xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver, slock or xlock by default. Just install one of these and it should work fine.
    I personally use slimlock and just symlinked /usr/local/bin/xflock4 to slimlock, which then takes precedence.
    However, there is a bug in XFCE 4.8 that causes the screen not to be locked when you use the suspend button from the logout menu, which is supposed to be fixed with the 4.10 release. It works fine for me when I close my laptop lid though.
    see here:
    https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6019
    Thanks, slimlock works really well; it looks quite nice, too. It feels like half the time I have a problem there's already a script for it somewhere and it's just a matter of finding it.
    I'm still stumped on the hibernate issue, unfortunately.

  • Openbox: Lock screen and switch user?

    I've started using Openbox a bit recently and I quite enjoy it, but I would like it if I could add options to switch user and to lock the screen, like in KDE or Gnome.  Is there a way to do this?

    Regardless of your login manager, you should be able to use Xscreensaver to lock the screen, but I do believe the switch user feature is only possible with GDM/KDM.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xscreensaver
    Have a look at above wiki for basic information.  Then, for openbox you can manually lock your machine with a menu item like this:
    <item label="Lock"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>xscreensaver-command -lock</execute> </action> </item>
    Here's my shutdown menu in its entirety:
    <menu id="64" label="Shutdown">
    <item label="Lock"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>xscreensaver-command -lock</execute> </action> </item>
    <item label="Logout"> <action name="Exit"/> </item>
    <item label="Reboot"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>sudo shutdown -r now</execute> </action> </item>
    <item label="Suspend"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>sudo pm-suspend</execute> </action> </item>
    <item label="Hibernate"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>sudo pm-hibernate</execute> </action> </item>
    <item label="Poweroff"> <action name="Execute"> <execute>sudo shutdown -h now</execute> </action> </item>
    </menu>
    Of course, you can also bind the xscreensaver to a keystroke, such as Win+L:
    <keybind key="W-l">
    <action name="Execute">
    <startupnotify>
    <enabled>false</enabled>
    <name>Lock Screen</name>
    </startupnotify>
    <command>xscreensaver-command -lock</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>

  • After GDM lock screen, log into a different session

    I think the following problem is caused by GDM, as it does not occur when using LightDM. Unfortunately I have found nothing interesting in log-files or on the internet, so I post it here, hoping someone can give a direction to solve it.
    After running Gnome3(.16.2) for a while I get a lock-screen and a login screen. This is not the same lock screen as I have told Gnome to use whenever I would like to have the computer locked. The screen resolution is the same as that of the 'normal' login screen at boot, but not the same as the resolution I use on the desktop.
    Logging in results in a new session on CTRL-ALT F4, leaving my original session on CTRL-ALT F2 (??), but without the mouse-cursor.
    I have the lock-screen disabled, and running LightDM it does not show unless I explicitly tell it to.
    The only desktop programs I use are MonoDevelop, Spyder3 and Firefox. I run Arch in a VMware-Fusion Guest for development purposes. I installed Open-vm-tools.
    Running LightDM I am a happy user, but it nags me GDM cocks-up. Anyone a clue what I could research?
    Kind regards,
    Martin

    Rotation lock is now a software function on the taskbar in 4.2 and the button now mutes notifications e.g. so that you can watch videos or listen to music without hearing email notifications etc.
    Rotation lock : double-click the home button, slide from the left, and its the button far right; press home again to exit the taskbar; repeat to switch off rotation lock.

  • HT1384 My lock screen/power button on my iPod Touch is broken, and I need some assistance.

    As the title suggests, I can not use the lock screen/power button on my iPod Touch, it is broken. I can use Adaptive Touch to turn the screen on and off at will, and also turn my device off. But if I turn it off, I don't know how to get it to turn back on. Could I just plug it into a charger and turn it back on, or would I need to plug it into my computer? Please help, in a few days I won't have access to it for 9 weeks, I need immediate help.

    If you power off the iPod, it will turn back on if you connect it to a charger like a wall charger or a computer. I just checked with a charging source to confirm. I knew it did it with a computer.

    I deleted the lock screen in Windows 8.1 and now realize I need it.  How can I get it back?
    I deleted using Windows+R  "regedit"  using this link
    http://media.askvg.com/downloads/2012/11/Disable-Windows-8-Lock-Screen.zip
    Is there a way to get the lock screen back?

    Hi,
    The registry you posted here are this
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization]
    "NoLockScreen"=dword:00000001
    so you just need to launch regedit editor by run regedit.exe, then locate to the right place, set the value back to 0, then restart your PC.
    or just run the "restore....reg" as David mentioned.
