GNOME "Root Terminal" / gksu Problem

Hey all,
In GNOME, the "Root Terminal" application is having an issue.  I can open it up and it works fine.  If, however, I close that instance and try to open it again, I enter my password and get a minimized "window" titled "Granting Rights" in the taskbar which goes away after a couple of moments and the GNOME Terminal never opens.
If I run the command "gsku -l gnome-terminal" (from /usr/share/applications/gksu.desktop) in an open terminal, I get the same thing, however the gksu command never completes and I have to control-c it.  Looking at a process list, I note that /usr/lib/libgksu/gksu-run-helper seems to be called by gksu, and when I kill it, gksu pops up a window with the following:
Failed to run gnome-terminal as user root.
Failed to communicate with gksu-run-helper.
Received:
gksu: waiting
While expecting:
gksu: waiting
Nothing appears in the terminal from a terminal-run instance of gksu.
Has anyone ever experienced this and/or solved this?
Thanks,
David

The problem has disappeared on the VM, but it gets weirder still.
I did a fresh install of Arch on my machine (keeping the /home partition, but setting up a fresh, new user to test with), and the problem remains.  But that's not all.  The root terminal still works only the one time, but I found that if I max out all four cores of my machine with "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/null" I can get the root terminal to appear every time that I execute it, if I max out three of them, it usually works, and if I max out two of them, it works some of the time.
There is pretty clearly something going wrong, and I'd bet it's a race condition.

  • ZTE Open C, brand new, following instructions bootloader will not unlock; have rooted terminal

''locking this thread as duplicate, please continue at [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1014768 /questions/1014768]''
I bought the device for developing purposes and just got it today. I am a US user by the way.
I followed the directions that are listed here for how to root the device and unlock the bootloader, however, the directions do not work.
I now have a rooted terminal using adb shell, however, when i reboot to the bootloader and run fastboot devices I get nothing, and no other fastboot command works.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I bought the phone from the ebay site just this week using the link here on Mozilla. I've even synced and built B2G for the device. But I can't unlock my bootloader? Defeats the purpose of "open" and makes me regret my purchase.
I would appreciate some prompt help in this matter.

I fixed this on my own.
And for you information that is the exact tool that I used.
And I'm not a novice; I know what a root shell is and I wouldn't have said that I have root if I didn't.
Maybe read the post before assuming you know more than the poster...
    Anyway...
i just built cwm for the device and using the rooted shell dd'd the factory recovery image and dd'd the new one.
then i installed the ZTE Kis 3 firmware with the new recovery
then i rebooted to the bootloader and did "sudo fastboot oem unlock" and the bootloader was unlocked.
this did not working following the aforementioned guide using only the upgrade tool otherwise i wouldn't have posted.

After todays update I have serious problem with editing file.
I see rendering artifacts, mixed syntax colors, I can fix it with redrawing vim screen or resizing terminal.
    Have you noticed something similiar?

Fixed with vte 0.16.4-2. vte was rendering uninitialized things on the screen, making random alienated things appearing in your terminal.

I have installed Arch in my desktop, everything seemed to work fine until I opened gnome-terminal

This is happening with terminator too.
I have a nvidia with the official and proprietary driver installed.

  • Solaris 10 x86 cdrw trouble.  Gnome and command line problems writing.

I'm experiencing general weirdness trying to write CD's and DVD's using a new internal DVD-RW device -- It's a Sony NEC AD 7220 A CD / DVD RW drive on a Solaris 10 x86 AMD system. I have searched far and wide for other threads of similar instances but no one has posted an issue like the one I'm having.
    I have a Sony Optiarc AD 7220 A CD-RW on a x86 AMD Athalon 1.6 ghz based server with 2 GB RAM.
The DVD-RW drive gets detected by BIOS (Phoenix TrustedCore 2.3) and reads disks fine. I installed Solaris 10.08 from DVD using this DVD-RW drive.
However, trying to write to new blank media does not work properly, (effectively at all).
I've tried different brands of brands of blank CD's and CD-R and CD+R (have not tried using CD-RW disks yet). Ditto with DVD's - tried DVD-R and DVD+R's.
    1. Inside the Solaris 10 GUI (Gnome, a.k.a. Java Desktop), when I put in a blank CD-R, a dialog box "Format Media...?" pops up. If I click "Ok" it formats the blank CD and closes the session, CD has been written to and is ruined.
    2. I open a terminal window, as root, and put in a blank CD. "mkisofs –r /home/foo 2>/dev/null | cdrw –i –p 1" will write a directory tree OK, but if I go back into gnome GUI and open and close the CD tray, again, up pops the "Format Media..." dialog box instead of the CD appearing on the desktop. If I restart vold (svcadm restart volfs) then open and close the CD tray, voila, the contents appear on desktop as CD icon.
    3. When I try to write to a DVD-R: "cdrw -i /local/iso_image" It always fails with: Write Track 1....Failed. after a few minutes. It did in fact write part of the .iso but bails out with a failure.
I've tried various other write commands (specifying the device ID, speed, so on and so forth) and command line switch options (following the rules of course) and it seems to me to be more than a syntax / media issue. However if it is I would like to know. I did see a similar CDRW device on the HCL for OpenSolaris with a 'reported to work' rating. That was for a Optiarc AD-5200A, which is going away thus my company has chosen to use the AD 7220A in speciality racks we build and deliver to the U.S. Navy.
I really need to get a handle on this CD-RW device issue and decide if a different brand / model is what it's going to take to solve this and move on to producing and delivering these systems in working conditions.

Sony systems are often very particular about what CD's and DVD's they'll take. I have several Sony systems that I use for video work and they'll read almost anything but they'll only write to DVD RW.  They also don't like cheap brand CD's and DVD's.  Be sure to try both CD RW and DVD RW before doing anything else.  Because of the requirement for DVD RW, they won't take fast speed (16x) DVD's, just 4x. If all of this turns out to be the case, you may want to go with a different manufacturer for the drive, DVD +RW 4x aren't always easy to find in the store.

No, dconf is no gconf equivalent, you simply use the gconf entry and it will work. gnome3 is not gconf-independet, most settings are still made there.

  • [Gnome - GDM] Locale/Charset Problem

    Hi everybody,
I´m using Gnome with GDM as Display Manager.
I got a problem with my keyboard settings, but don´t know why
The first charset/locale option is set in the /boot/grub/menu.lst
    kernel /vmlinuz26 lang=de locale=de_DE.UTF8 root=/dev.....
I use a LUKS encrypted /home partition and need a german locale/charset for the passphrase/during bootup.
The second charset option is in my /etc/rc.conf:
    LOCALE="de_DE.UTF8"
    KEYMAP="de"
With those settings I got an almost "normal" keyboard behaviour.
The Umlaut-Character for example arent´t working during bootup or in a tty. In a later started shell inside of Gnome everything works fine.
The second charset problem is during password input inside GDM. The layout isn´t working right here either.
I already tried the ./dmrc settings of Language and Keys, but nothing works.
Anyone got a clue how to fix that?
    Greets
    Flo

Maybe you can change the subject of this thread, as the issue is not only related to gdm, IMHO.
I don't get it either. Settings are LOCALE="sv_SE"  and KEYMAP="sv-latin1" in rc.conf and locale -a gives me
    [root@localhost ~]# locale -a
    C
    POSIX
    sv_SE
    sv_SE.iso88591
    swedish
But something is still wrong, because calling up some manpages gives me
Cannot open the message catalog "man" for locale "sv_SE"
    (NLSPATH="<none>")
I ran locale-gen, but I'm pretty lost in this locale business too...

  • Gnome App "Covers" Screen Problem

I have recently noticed a problem with my Gnome installation. When I start up the machine and log in (I use GDM), If I don't touch the keyboard or mouse after entering my password, the screen will look as if a semi-transparent application starts and covers the entire screen. I run Compiz and have alpha-transparencies blurred. Through the blur I can see the clock in the panel still ticking off the seconds, etc. If I move the mouse, the screen returns to normal. If I wait until the screensaver starts, the screensaver acts normal, and moving the mouse after that results in normal operation as usual.
I have tried to find out what app (or setting) is responsible for this, but have no more ideas. I have tried:
    1) Running "top" as soon as I log in, but then (since I have touched the keyboard and/or mouse) the problem never occurs.
    2) I have checked for a "hidden" startup app or daemon and can't find anything. I checked both ~/.config/autostart and in the Gnome Startup Apps.
Does anyone have any other ideas about how to find out what app is doing this?
Here is a screenshot of what I see:

What if you run a little script that opens a terminal and runs top automatically at login?

okay I get it now. that's not how Adwaita is supposed to look like. It's unfortunately quite common that gtk3 themes get broken after gtk3.x version update, and need to be updated. Although if you've installed gnome the official arch way (i.e. with pacman), it should update the themes as well.
is it possible that you have installed Adwaita in your ~/.themes/ directory. If so gtk applications will use the theme in your home directory instead of the one in /usr/share/themes that should be up to date if you have the latest gnome-themes-standard installed.
    Sorry for the late reply.
Anyway, no I do not have Adwaita in ~/.themes/. I tried reinstalling gnome-themes too and it fixed it on some windows (such as Firefox and Terminal). Some are still are still broken like Nautilus.

  • Configuring Terminal shell problems

I've been trying to make my Terminal shell login feel like the linux shell that I use at work. One major thing for this to feel right for me is for the up and down cursor keys to perform a history search up/down. I've added the following to my ~/.tcshrc
    bindkey "^[[A" history-search-backward
    bindkey "^[[B" history-search-forward
Upon launching terminal I test the history searching by typing in a series of commands and then trying to search up through them but by starting with some of the letters of the commands to search for on the command line. This doesn't work.
I did notice by re-sourcing my .tcshrc to fix something else that all of a sudden the up/down keys were working correctly.
I would like to know why it is that i have to resource the .tcshrc file to get this to work, and if anyone has any suggestions for how to fix this problem i'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers

I don't have root account setup so can't write to those global files.
you can just use sudo, no need to activate root.
    just do
    *sudo -s*
and then use your favorite command line editor to add your commands to /etc/csh.login
Also, activating root is very easy. From CL you can enter
    dsenableroot
I did man on tcsh as well and tried adding the settings into ~/.login as well.. an echo shows it being used but it don't work...
I may reinstall sometime but i'm frustrated at losing a lot of my keychain and all that.. is there someway to back that up i wonder.
Hmm i was going to setup a script to apply the commands for me, of course a shell script instances its own shell so i can't use that... Argh.. i'm left with a source being required, i'll hide it in an alias, which is working so i can just type fixHistorySearch whenever i want to do some serious console work (which at the moment at least is fairly rare)
Thanks a lot for your help.. I guess there's no way i can ask apple directly what is going on with this bizarre problem?
Not on these boards. apple reps never post here. You can try calling apple support but since the problem is clearly specific to you machine they'll just tell you to reinstall.
    Cheers

  • Gnome 2.12 panel problem

    Hi,
Yesterday I installed the Gnome 2.12 from testing, and I can't add certain items to the panel, like the clock, the windows list, the show desktop, the trash and so on, below is the error message after I tried to add the clock for example. The problem is the same for all users, including root.
    ========================
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet".
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?
    ========================
Is there someone who is able to use these items ?

I had the same problem and this is how I fixed it: I had a look at all the dependencies of gnome-applets and their dependencies (pacman -Qi) and started to sync what hadn't been sync'ed for whatever reason...the packages that got updated where libwnck and gdbm...
    So I guess running
    $ pacman -Sy libwnck gdbm
    should fix the problem
