Gnome: Trouble with system-config-printer

Hello all
I have trouble setting up my printers using system-config-printer in Gnome... I added some screenshots to the bottom of this post. When I try to add the Generic CUPS-PDF printer, the "Next" button is disabled and I am not allowed to continue. When I try to add the HP printer that is on my home network (as recognised by the config) the application throws some sort of runtime error (in terminal) and doesn't update the screen or allow me to continue.
Before moving to Arch a few weeks ago, I used Ubuntu 8.04, and it had a very different application for configuring printers (although it was also called system-config-printer). Preferably, I'd just get that application back for configuring printers, it was much more intuitive and above all it actually worked.
I would like to know how to solve my problem of not being able to add the printers I want and how to get the Ubuntu printer config on Arch if that is possible at all.
Thanks

Hmm.. It doesn't really make sense to me that I need a webbrowser to configure a printer, but I gave it a try. When I tried adding the CUPS-PDF printer, it asked me what brand it was in the second step. This can't be right. When I tried adding the HP printer that is on my network, it automatically selected the correct driver from a list, but when I chose to continue it asked me for a username and a password, and providing my own did not work. So this method failed for both printers. I would really love to get back the old configuration menu from Ubuntu at this point.

The GTK theme is a personal modification of Fresh Dark that removes the Aurora style scrollbar, uses bigger icons and has nicer progress bars.
The font I use is Myriad Pro with slight hinting enabled.
The icon theme is my own mash-up of many tango-styled themes and a few custom icons and improved icons from other themes. You'll find icons there from gnome-colors, gnome-icon-theme, ubuntu-studio, and stuff found randomly on the internet and more. I'm not done perfectioning the theme though, but it's come a long way.

I have the same issue that was discussed in the thread system-config-printer-gnome utility freezes when "adding" printer. Specifically, when I try to add a printer using system-config-printer gui, the window freezes and throws back the following code:

The solution mentioned was to use the CUPS web interface. This lets me add a printer (which is part of the solution), this is not the complete solution. I've used the utility before, and I'm comfortable with it, and I think that I should be able to use the gnome utility to add the printer if everything on my system is up to date (which it is, as of this posting). I would like to know why it doesn't work anymore (and I'm of the impression that it has something to do with how I've installed python on my system).
I've googled the issue, and perhaps I didn't look around thoroughly enough, but I couldn't find a solution. So if somebody knows where to look I'd be glad to look there.

I have the same problem. I noticed that it occured only after installing the following driver packages.
hpoj-0.91-16 hplip-3.11.3-1 net-snmp-5.6.1-1 foomatic-db-engine-4.0.6_20101215-1 foomatic-db-4.0.6_20101215-1
I did a workaround by installing the printer using the webinterface, removing the drivers again, setting the samba login details and then reinstalling the drivers.
But this problem should really be fixed.

• System-config-printer-gnome utility freezes when "adding" printer.

I've just started adding my wireless printer to my desktop, and while reading about CUPS in the archwiki, I discovered "system-config-printer-gnome". I installed it with pacman, and then set it up like the wiki said. Now when I run system-config-printer and press "Add", I get this error output in my terminal:

Does anyone know what could be wrong? I've done some Googling, but couldn't find anything related to this. I also couldn't find anything related to setting up a wireless printer manually with CUPS, so this way seemed the easiest way of adding a printer. Thanks
P.S. I am using GNOME, and all my packages are up to date.

skunktrader wrote:Did you try pointing your browser at http://localhost:631/admin and attempt to add your printer from there?
Oh wow. That worked perfectly! I guess when I saw that in the wiki I assumed that it was for USB or parallel port printers since I saw "localhost". Sorry to waste thread space!
Thanks so much guys!
P.S. I feel like such a noob

max kaspar, please edit your post - the bright yellow is hard on the eyes.
When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode
like this
It makes the code more readable and - in case of longer listings - more convenient to scroll through.
*.pyc files can cause a conflict like that, usually you can remove them, as they don't belong to any package.

• How to display double byte characters with system.out.print?

Hi, I'm a newbie java programmer having trouble to utilize java locale with system io on dos console mode.
Platform is winxp, jvm1.5,
File structure is:
C:\myProg <-root
C:\myProg\test <-package
C:\myProg\test\Run.java
C:\myProg\test\MessageBundle.properties <- default properties
C:\myProg\test\MessageBundle_zh_HK.properties <- localed properties (written in notepad and save as Unicode, window notepad contains BOM)
inside MessageBundle.properties:
test = Hello
inside Message_zh_HK.properties:
test = 喂 //hello in big5 encoding
run.java:
package test;
import java.util.*;
public class Run{
public static void main(String[] args){
Locale locale = new Locale("zh","HK");
ResourceBundle resource =
ResourceBundle.getbundle("test.MessageBundle", locale);
System.out.println(resource.getString("test"));
}//main
}//classwhen run this program, it'll kept diplay "hello" instead of the encoded character...
then when i try run the native2ascii tool against MessageBundle_zh_HK.properties, it starts to display monster characters instead.
Trying to figure out what I did wrong and how to display double byte characters on console.
Thank you.
p.s: while googling, some said dos can only can display ASCII. To demonstrate the dos console is capable of displaying double byte characters, i wrote another helloWorld in chinese using notepad with C# and compile using "csc hello.cs", sure enough, console.write in c# allowed me to display the character I was expecting. Since dos console can print double byte characters, I must be missing something important in this java program.

after google a brunch, I learned that javac (hence java.exe) does not support BOM (byte order mark).
I had to use a diff editor to save my text file as unicode without BOM in order for native2ascii to convert into a ascii file.
Even the property file is in ascii format, I'm still having trouble to display those character in dos console. In fact, I just noticed I can use system.out.println to display double byte character if I embedded the character itself in java source file:
public class Run {
public static void main(String[] args) throws UnsupportedEncodingException{
String msg = "中文"; //double byte character
try{
System.out.println(new String(msg.getBytes("UTF-8")) + " new string");  //this displays fine
catch(Exception e){}
Locale locale = new Locale("zh", "HK");
ResourceBundle resource = ResourceBundle.getBundle("test.MessagesBundle", locale);
System.out.println(resource.getString("Hey")); //this will display weird characterso it seems like to me that I must did something wrong in the process of creating properties file from unicode text file...

• Problem with system config "@^@^@^@^@"

Hello, newbie here (to the forums and to linux in general). I have been trying to install archlinux on my virtual machine for the past few days, following tutorials on youtube and on the archwiki, and I have hit a snag.
After installing the packages, I go down to configuration and hit system config. On the tutorials normally people are allowed to configure their time or boot as DCHP, but for me all I get when I go into system config is one line of code that looks like this: @^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@
and it just keeps going. What does this mean? Does it mean I messed up a step in the installation process? Or should I not worry about it?

Welcome to the forum Decommissioner!
Did you use earlier Unix-like systems, like BSDs, Mac e.g. ?
Why did you choose Archlinux?
Which file do you mean under sysconfig ?
Maybe ArchWiki will be the best friend in the early days.

• Trouble with connecting 6280 printer to network

I am operating two systems (PC with Vista and MacBook Pro with OS X version 10.5.8). My printer is the C6280 All-in-One and it is hooked up to a router. My PC recognizes the printer just fine, but I cannot get my MacBook to find it. I have gone through the setup routine many times using the CD provided by HP, have uninstalled the software and installed again. I have rebooted every device several times. I have even manually put in the IP address of the printer. Still nothing. During the downloading of HP software I get an error message saying the HPIO Trap Monitor failed but it does it every time so I finally tried ignore and went on. The setup just doesn't complete itself and no printer is located. Any ideas?

First, what router and ISP are you using?
Second, can you type the printer's IP address into your Mac's internet browser to see the printer? (get the IP by printing a Network Config Page from the front panel of the printer).
Finally, try a printing system reset:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click the print queue area and select Reset Printing System.
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

To achieve this:
Print <Copies & Pages <Layout - turn on two-sided - long edge binding

How can I fix this please

Hello xxzz,
Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that the flip on long edge option is greyed out for you when you try to print double sided. I will try to help you with this.
Usually if an option is greyed out, it indicates that the software wasn't installed completely or correctly. That or the printer isn't capable of the task. Knowing that this printer is able to duplex, it could be a problem with the software/drivers.
Try the following.
Uninstall the software.
Reset the print system.
Verify/Repair disk permissions
Re-install the software - software download
Test to see if you're now able to choose the options.

• Trouble with LPD & IPP printing

This is driving me nuts.
I work for an external IT company that looks after the macs for a Design Studio in a University.
They have amongst others, 4 Xerox copiers handled by a central RIP server which was no problem when they where in their old studio connected via the same network switch. I would set the printers up on the Macs via LPD, one for Colour & another for Mono. The print jobs go into a Hold queue on the server & are manually assigned to the relevant copier.
All macs on 10.4.11
The studio then moved to a different location on Campus & at first all seemed to be working fine. Then I installed two new iMacs with 10.5 & set up the printers as normal but when I tried to print to the rip server it failed.
If I set up the printer via LPD & try to print, the job sits in the queue with the message "Remote host did not accept control file (1)".
If I set up the printer via IPP & try to print, the job sits in the queue with the message "/Libray/Printers/Xerox/filter/XeroxPSFilter failed Network host ip address is busy, will retry in 30 seconds"
I thought it was something to do with Leopard but then I had to rebuild one of the G5's with 10.4 & I got the same errors except that on IPP I just get "Printer Busy, will retry in 10 seconds".
If I share the printer from one of the Macs that is working normally & print through that from the iMac it works fine. I have the latest PPD's I have reset the print system, pulled my hair out & swore a lot but none of these things have resolved it.
I decided to take one of the iMacs down to the Xerox room so that it was on the same network switch again but all I got was the same error messages. A couple of the copiers have Appletalk enabled so I set them up on the iMac bypassing the central rip sever & the job went straight through. I got onto the other iMac via screen sharing in the design studio & set up the the same printer but got the message /Libray/Printers/Xerox/filter/XeroxPSFilter failed.
If I look in the console it's pretty much full with the messages below.
8/30/08 3:57:21 AM com.apple.atprintd.XeroxMonoHold[73] nbp_send: nbpvalidateentity failed
8/30/08 3:57:21 AM com.apple.atprintd.XeroxMonoHold[73] nbp_lookup: nbp_send failed got=-1
If anybody could help I would be most grateful.
Thanks

If the RIP is an EFI Fiery product, then the LPD queue name has to be entered when you create the printer queue. If it is not Fiery, it still may require some specific queue name to print.
If any Mac is still printing to the RIP, you can check what queue name has been used via a browser. For the URL, enter http://127.0.0.1:631/printers to open the CUPS printer page. Scroll through to the Xerox and have a look at the Device URI. If it shows something like lpd://ip_address/print, then you know a queue name is required - in the case of the Fierys it has to be print or hold and it must be entered in lower case.
As for the IPP, you may find that this service has not been enabled or does not exist on the RIP.

• Trouble with getting my printer to work with TC

I don't know if this is a unique problem or not but I have had my hands full with TC ever since upgrading to 10.5.5. First, I spent countless hours trying to get TC to resume backups after the upgrade. I finally got TC to work again by erasing it and reinstalling it like it was new to the system. It took well over 24 hours to get my HD backed up but at least everything is working now. Backups have resumed in an orderly fashion.
My latest problem is with my Canon Pixma iP4300. All of a sudden today it stopped showing up in my printer list. Nothing I did could get it to appear. I removed and reinstalled the software, including the latest update from the Canon website. Nothing.
Because I need the printer for my work I finally unplugged it from the TC and ran it straight into the back of my iMac. Voila! Everything is fine as long as I stay away from my TC. What's going on???

Try these suggestions...
*Resetting Printing System*
On all of the Macs that are affected try resetting the Printing System as described in these KB articles:
Mac OS X: About the Reset Printing System feature
[http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341]
Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Resetting the printing system
[http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/14001.html]
To reset the printing system: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Print & Fax. Hold down the Control key as you click in the Printer list, and choose “Reset printing system” from the pop-up menu that appears. Add the printers you use.
Additionally, are you using a USB hub between the printer and the USB port on the TC? Some users have discovered that not all hubs are compatible with the TCs USB port.
If the above does not resolve your issue, then...
Launch Airport Utility.
Select your TC on the left.
Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Printers" from the toolbar at the top.
Verify that the printer listed is indeed the printer connected to the TC.
If not, cycle the power on the printer. Now see if things improve.

• Weird troubles with system resolution [ati card]

Hi all !
First post here because I'm coming from the french arch community
Straight to the point: I have a new toshiba laptop with ati hd 3650 graphic card running with proprietary drivers. Everything worked fine (Direct rendering ok) until I decided to configure dual screen with aticonfig.
I tried but it didn't work as expected so I decided to go back to my previous Xorg conf. But now I have a kind of weird behaviour. When X starts, it seems to settle as if it was still running dual screen configuration. My mouse cursor is on the right side (desktop center) and when I log on, kde shows wide desktops. Weirder is the fact that when I go to system configuration > display settings, the screen flicks and then everything went back with no wide desktop anymore... Another thing is when I've just logged on, blender run just fine, but once I've been to display settings, it shows horizontal black lines all around and is unusable though.
One more detail: on the display settings, I still can see the 2560x800 resolution setting on top of the list... I suspect kdm to use this one but how ? I don't have any idea
Here is my Xorg.conf
