GNOME2.2 Notes
First, yes, GNOME2.2 is out today. Yay GNOME users.
And it will still probably be a bit before Arch has packages. First, there are several dependency issues. GNOME2.2 requires Xft2/Fontconfig, which are ugly to install on a machine without XFree86 4.3. That should be out quite soon, however, and if not, I might figure out a clean way to get those packages in without having the ugly hacks other distros try to use.
GNOME2.2 requires GStreamer for several components (notably the media player apps, including the sound recorder, and Rhythmbox). However, GStreamer cannot run on a box with a glibc compiled for i686 (a la arch) because of some bug interactions in the threading interface.
And, finally, building GNOME2.2, including checking all the gconf keys, weird crashes, etc., takes an extremely long amount of time. I have an older release candidate built and working (save for the multi-media bits, which crash and burn in the GStreamer core), and it'll probably take a day or two just to upgrade those packages to the release, and debug them, and that's pretending I don't have work and school to contend with. ;-)
For those who just can't wait at all, I'd suggest checking out Garnome (http://ww.gnome.org/~jdub/garnome). It'll "work," until the official packages are all pretty and working and such.
OK, just a few issues left before I can make the packages "live":
a) Pretty much every GNOME package needs install scripts for its gconf keys (ugh), so that'll take a lot of cut-n-pasting, then rebuilding.
b) GNOME Terminal crashes hard, but that might be related to it not having its gconf settings installed.
c) fontconfig needs some fixing if it is to actually work right.
But I'm working at them...

Hal settings for synaptic/keyboard not respected anymore (Gnome2.28)
I have a 11-x11-synaptics.fdi config-file with my synaptics settings and a 10-keymap.fdi file with my keyboard layout set.
After upgrading to Gnome 2.28 yesterday, these settings are not respected anymore. I get US layout, and a touchpad where tapping and RTCornerButton and RBCornerButton does not work. Setting tapping manually in Gnomes mouse settings gui makes it work, but only for tapping.
The strange thing is that the same thing happens when logging in to lxde. As I can't see any x.org-packages that have been installed, this confuses me. Could it be gdm related? Has any other things mouse- and keybpard-related been updated just now?
I updated on the 09.10, and I'm pretty sure everything worked fine (didn't use my laptop much the last couple of days). However, when I updated again the 13.10, yesterday, mouse and keyboard settings broke.
This seems sort of related to this post, but he mentions only keyboard layout, and mine has surely worked since then.
A bug? A Feature? Me being stupid?
I have looked trough the pacman.log/warnings, I promise!I'm also having problem with Gnome not respecting my Hal settings. After enabling tapping in gnome-mouse-properties it mostly works, but for some reason TapButton2 and TapButton3 are reversed, ie. TapButton2 = 3 and TapButton3 = 2. I can't find any way of configuring the TapButtons in Gnome either, which is really stupid.
I guess I can somehow make sure that synclient sets these correctly, but is there no way of telling gnome to either set the corrent values or to not touch the settings at all? Not running gnome-settings-daemon is not an option for me, since it sets a lot of other things that I want. -
Desktop.open can not open the file with unicode letters in the path?
String filename = "/home/wenkai/received/测试.txt";
try {
File file = new File(filename);
Desktop.getDesktop().open(file);
} catch(IOException ex) {
ex.printStackTrace();
return;
}"测试" is just Chinese word. Now, I am using Ubuntu7.10, Gnome2.20.1, system environment setting is LANG="zh_CN.UTF-8", and java version is 1.6.0.
My system will open text file using gedit application, but when I run the code above, "file:/home/wenkai/received/测试.txt:file name or URI format error." printed in console and gedit open an temp empty file.
Do I need to encode the file path? I have tried URLEncoder.encode(String, String), but it dose not work.RGold1963 wrote:

I understand that, of course. But since I don't do windows, the above is all I can offer.

Hi!
I installed Gnome3 (with gnome-shell) and have one problem.
Fullscreen flash video (youtube, etc.) not working. When i click on fullscreen button, the video just freezes.
In Gnome2 or KDE4 I not have this problem.
Kernel version: 2.6.38.5-1
Nvidia driver version: 270.41.06-1
Flash version: 10.2.159.1-2 (mms.cfg: EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1)
Please help.
Try adding
OverrideGPUValidation = 1
to /etc/adobe/mms.cfg
That still seems to work for me. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=117875 -
Can LXDE be the new Gnome2?
Now that Gnome3 and Unity are here lots of users, like me, want to migrate to a more usable desktop. LXDE it's simple and fast. But not as good as we want.
I think that LXDE can attract a bunch of new users with some little changes, that make it look and feel more like Gnome2 (that was simply great):
1. Make the application menu more attractive, with big icons, like in Gnome2.
2. Make a more usable places menu, like it was in Gnome2. Just 'click and open', and also make it shows removable-drives.
3. Make lxpanel show the icon theme 'starthere'-icon, instead of the ugly button that has now.
4. Make lxpanel show the panel background that it's included in the gtk-theme automatically. Like gnome-panel and xfce4-panel.
5. Include a session-menu applet to let the user logout, restart or shutdown quick from the panel, something like the indicator-session applet, from Ubuntu.
6. Add a plugin for lxappareance that can change metacity (or xfwm4) themes, to give a chance to use it, instead of openbox. And also make it change the wallpaper.
7. Make pcmanfm mount removable-drives on the Desktop. Like in nautilus or thunar (xfdesktop4). And add the 'open-in-terminal' option also in the Desktop.
8. Make the volume applet shows pavucontrol, alsamixer or something, to adjust the volume more easily. And also include an option to select the sound theme.
What do you think?Unia wrote:Seems to me that XFCE has almost every feature you list there. Did you try XFCE? It's not that heavy either and most that want a Gnome2-like environment switched to it
I'm in Arch with XFCE, right now. It's not what I want, LXDE it's more simple and fast. I prefer pcmafm over thunar, and lxpanel over xfce4-panel, and all the lxde stuff.

Can't remember how is in 'normal lxpanel' - I use lxpanelx. Here you have an option to change icon and caption text. I use beautiful Lubuntu menu icon
Actually I have Lubuntu besides Arch. What I want is that lxpanel set the 'start-here' icon and the background without any manual configuration, like others panel do, that's all.

Honestly, I don't like MATE, Gnome2 it's dead.

swanson wrote:I think most style mods you listed are feasible as is already. Just need some editing of ordinary config files - remember LXDE should be light!
And concering Pcmanfm; it was recently taken out of extra/common arch repos and moved to AUR = installation now requires compilation.
Then into [community] so you need not compile it
LXDE shouldn't try to be like gnome 2, the idea seems like an abomination to me, XFCE is a perfectly good DE and is closer to Gnome 2 than LXDE will ever be (or so I hope). LXDE's success comes from it's modular setup and that very little depends on little else. Don't like lxpanel? Change it without uninstalling half the sysem
I don't think that "the idea seems like an abomination" maybe you don't get my point, I don't want LXDE to be a "clone" of Gnome2. I used Gnome2 as a referece because I like it. That's all. I also doubt that this little changes affect the LXDE performance.
I just think that LXDE can fill the blank. Gnome2 it's dead. LXDE has the potential to become the most popular DE, with some little improvements. -
[new] fbida, ruby-gnome2 and shfs
I have added three more packages to my repo :
1) fbida : this is a image viewer for the framebuffer. Works really great, and also
comes with a script to view pdf files (that's why it depends on ghostscript).
I'm going to mess around with this script later, cuz right now it's just not very
usable if you want to see a large pdf file (it first creates a tiff file of every page of
the pdf, which takes quite some time).
2) shfs : this is a module that allows you to mount a remote directory on your
machine using ssh. Has been working just fine for me here, but I don't know if
my PKGBUILD for this one is very good. If someone would like to check it out,
I would appreciate it.
3) ruby-gnome2 : this are ruby bindings for GTK and gnome. This PKGBUILD was
made by a friend of mine (Caio Marcelo), and is quite useful if you guys are into
programming ruby.
I have changed the name of the repository (it was called 'lfelipe', now it's called 'vapor').
In order to use it, add the following two lines to your /etc/pacman.conf :
[vapor]
Server = http://atum.lab.ic.unicamp.br/~lfelipe/arch/vapor
The PKGBUILDs are available at : http://atum.lab.ic.unicamp.br/~lfelipe/ … /PKGBUILD/
Hope you guys enjoy it.
PS: the other two packages that are also available at the repository are :
1) GLPK : GNU Linear Programming Toolkit
2) dvdbackup : a command-line program that is quite useful for ripping dvd'shey, sorry
I forgot to search for that one at the forums here
Your PKGBUILD is more complete than mine. Gotta see what those patches are for.
See ya -
This is bindings for gnome related stuff and gtk2 for ruby programming language. Please, dont upgrade on 0.10.1. In 0.10.1 there is unbeauty bug somewhere and it may but laso may not work.

I would like to install ECC.6 on Red Hat Enterprises Linux 5.0 server for test purpose. I have already completed RHEL installation and perform all the recommendation written in SAP NOTES 171356, 1048303 etc.
I have installed JAVA as per the instructions given in the following links.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/install-linux.html
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml
http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialJava.html#INSTALL_SDK
I am able to install JAVA on my Linux server but when I try to check whether the installation is successful or not I tried following commands, with the unexpected result.
#which java
/usr/bin/java
Java -fullversion*
gives details of by default installed java.
Can anybody help me or guide me to install java correctly on my Linux server?
Any other details if you like I will provide.
Regards
AhsanDear Markus,

Gnome settings do not take, and gnome-settings-manager breaks things.
I just updated my Arch install. I hadn't done a full system upgrade since December (I think). The install went fine as far as I can tell. It broke my xorg.conf again, but it always does that, no biggie.
My biggest fight seems to be with the gnome-settings-manager. I am now getting no icons in the menus, the mouse runs extremely slow and the only way to get it to run at a normal tracking speed is to use the KDE 'systemsettings' to change it (bizarre). Also, any desktop background that I assign is essentially covered over on startup with a background color and I cannot (using any settings program in the menus) actually put something there. I'm sure there's just some confusion over what is in control of the desktop and which config file is being used, but I cannot find any other mention of this issue in the forums, and forcefully re-installing gnome has yielded no help. I also moved all my '.gnome' dirs under home to some other location, and this made no difference.
Some info:
# pacman -Q gnome-applets gnome-desktop gnome-settings-daemon gnome-session
gnome-applets 2.24.3.1-1
gnome-desktop 2.24.3-1
gnome-settings-daemon 2.24.1-1
gnome-session 2.24.3-1
When I run gnome-mouse-properties from a command line, I see this:
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Then, when I try to change the mouse acceleration:
(gnome-mouse-properties:7165): capplet-common-WARNING **: Unable to find a default value for key for /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/motion_acceleration.
I'll assume it is an integer, but that may break things.
Please be sure that the associated schema is installed
(gnome-mouse-properties:7165): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_get_float: assertion `value->type == GCONF_VALUE_FLOAT' failed
(gnome-mouse-properties:7165): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_get_float: assertion `value->type == GCONF_VALUE_FLOAT' failed
Any ideas?Just to reinforce what byte said: I had similar problems and moving .gconf worked. If it doesn't, you can also try moving .gnome2. And then if you are versed in the edition of gnome settings files, you can search and repair the faulty ones. If not (like me)... start from scratch, delete the moved dir.
It would be great if the gnome devs simplified the format of settings files (make it more like rc.conf!) and made it so they don't break so often. Maybe a system a la windows where previous versions of the registry get saved. Then upon breakage one could just bring up the last working version. Of course the best thing would be for the settings to not get corrupted in the first place. -
Sqlplus can connect but can not work!
I have finished an installing of an Oracle10R2 on the OEL5.0 system. All run well except that the sqlplus can not work.I install it once more, but the results are same. What is the problem?

Hi all,
Been a Linux user for 4 years and decided to install Arch. Must say, I'm very impressed!
But a few things have got me puzzled and the main one is that Gnome doesn't seen to be remembering my settings nor do I have the "shutdown" menu under "System".
Here is my /etc/inittab:
# /etc/inittab
# Runlevels:
# 0 Halt
# 1(S) Single-user
# 2 Not used
# 3 Multi-user
# 4 Not used
# 5 X11
# 6 Reboot
## Only one of the following two lines can be uncommented!
# Boot to console
#id:3:initdefault:
# Boot to X11
id:5:initdefault:
#rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
#rs:S1:wait:/etc/rc.single
#rm:2345:wait:/etc/rc.multi
#rh:06:wait:/etc/rc.shutdown
#su:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin -p
# use once instead of wait
rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
rs:S1:once:/etc/rc.single
rm:2345:once:/etc/rc.multi
rh:06:once:/etc/rc.shutdown
su:S:once:/sbin/sulogin -p
# -8 options fixes umlauts problem on login
c1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin scott tty1 linux
#c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3 linux
#c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty -8 38400 tty4 linux
#c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty -8 38400 tty5 linux
#c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
# Hypervisor Virtual Console for Xen and KVM
#h0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 hvc0 linux
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
# Example lines for starting a login manager
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >/dev/null 2>&1
#x:45:once:/bin/su scott -l -c "/bin/bash --login -c startx >/dev/null 2>&1"
# End of file
And here is my ~/.xinitrc
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
And my ~/.bashrc
# Check for an interactive session
[ -z "$PS1" ] && return
if [[ -z $DISPLAY && $(tty) = /dev/tty1 ]]; then
startx
# Could use xinit instead of startx
#exec xinit -- /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp
fi
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
complete -cf sudo
I followed the guide on the Arch wiki for auto login and automatic X and it should be saving my GNOME settings but it doesn't.
Any help much appreciated.The shutdown issue might be because you're using `startx` instead of `exec startx`, ck-list-sessions will probably show that you aren't authorized as a local user right now.
The GNOME settings issue could be because you ran stuff with sudo and root owns config files (so gnome can't write to them). You can can fix that with a quick `chown -R`, but there are other reasons it could be happening so imo you are better off just removing or moving the current .gnome2 and .gconf dirs and seeing if the problem persists with a fresh start.

* GNUsound may not show up in the GNOME application menu since GNUsound
will be installed in a different location from where the GNOME expects
it.
To solve this issue, either configure GNUsound using
'./configure --prefix=/usr'
or create the following symbolic link after performing 'make install':
'ln -s /usr/local/share/gnome/apps/Multimedia/gnusound.desktop /usr/share/gnome/apps/Multimedia/gnusound.desktop'
If these settings are OK you can type 'make' to compile.
[al@myhost gnusound-0.7.4]$ make
make: *** Нет целей. Останов.

I and, then other programs want compile get this ('*** No targets. Stop.') error.Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder.
