Going from FCP 6 to FCP 5

I am trying to take a project created on FCP 6 and continue editing on FCP 5.
This is what I have done so far:
I saved the FCP6 project as an XML file - in the four different versions that it gave me as options.
I took the drive that had all the files to the FCP5 machine and imported the FCP xml file. It would only take version 1.
The project opened up but it would only see the files that were on the timeline . All the masterclips and subclips in the bins were off line and the audio on the time line was out of sync.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
William

You must use the Media Manager (in the File menu) to create a copy of your project. This will consolidate all your media into a single folder that you can move to the computer with FCP 5. Make your XML file from the new project file that Media Manager creates.

  • HD ANIMATION FROM AVID TO FCP AND BACK

    Hey,
I have a client who needs me to edit Avid HD sequences into a short promo in FCP. I want to do an offline edit and then reconnect the sequence to full HD quality and export the promos back to Avid. Has anyone had to do this? Would I loose HD quality going from Quicktime to Avid Media? Would my G5 Dual 1.8 with FCP 5 HD be able to handle import, edit and export of full quality HD media?
I hope this is enough info. Thanks

you will be much happier and much better off if you stay in Avid world and make those corrections there. Avid uses its own propritery media format that can't be easily transfered to FCP. You could use something like Automatic Duck to generate a list and then recapture in FCP but other than that, stay in Avid. In other words, it is not absolutely simple to move the MXF files.

  • Best workflow for image (LOGO) from Illustrator to FCP?

Greetings to all. I am struggling with this -- I want to bring my company logo into FCP 5.1.4, FROM Illustrator to FCP. Easy enough? Not for me.. as I have two issues:
    1. My imported image looks great in the viewer, but jaggies in the Canvas.
I understand that for DV NTSC 48k, my frame size is 720x480 -- but in another post, I read that it is best to export as 720x540, .tif (another person said 720x540 jpeg, because jpeg embeds sRGB proile -- but that will be part of question #2) -- the square pixel vs. 4:3 pixel issue...
My Illustrator image is all vector art, and all fonts are outlined before export. I am saving as high-res (300 dpi). I tried saving as tif, jpeg, pdf. I tried bringing the PDF into photoshop, and saving as a psd. I tried opening pdf. No matter what I tried, the image looked perfect in the viewer, but like doo in the canvas. A tif, file size 720x540, 300dpi looks correct in the viewer, but jaggie in the canvas.
YES, the green "render" bar was visible in the timeline -- of course, that must be the problem -- but then I rendered the still clip, and there was no difference. I made sure the render indicator in the timeline was "dark grey" -- but yet, the imported still image from illustrator looks jaggie and not good enough for production in the canvas.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG HERE?
    2. Color space -- regardless of the jaggies issues, my imported still image from illustrator is all washed out when imported.
Regardless of file type. Yes, file set to RGB. Yes, gamma set to 2.2 (also tried setting imported still gamma to defualt - "source" - no change)
My LCD display (mac book pro C2D 17") is calibrated, using a Spyder2. Gamma is set to 2.2. My print output from illustrator (saved as pdf x-1/a) ALWAYS prints as expected.
If I add a color correction filter, and juice up the saturation, I can try to make the still image look close, but this shouldn't be the case, YES?
My expectation is that a still image in illustrator or photoshop should look the same in FCP.
What kind of newbie error am I making? What am I missing?
Thank in advance for any guidance.

I have been sending jobs to print (magazine ads, web, general print) for ages, and my printed materials come in as expected -- that is, within a few % points of my display -- which is what we are expecting -- and also EXTREMELY close to proof prints, using a reasonably high-end inkjet printer, with correct paper profiles... that is to say, that although I am no expert in color management by any means, I have what I need so that what I see on screen is very close to what is printed on a local printer, or a million dollar press.
CAN I EXPECT to achieve anything close to this with video?
When you print something on paper, you get to see exactly what it will look like and that's exactly how your customers will see it too. With video, there are infinite variables affecting this such as incorrectly calibrated displays; cheap TV components; the difference between CRTs, LCDs and computer displays; the size / resolution of the display, etc. There are so many variables that it will look different on every screen. All we can do as content producers is calibrate to a common standard, achieved through a properly-calibrated broadcast monitor.
But if your film has a single use in mind, such as a trade show, it is better to ignore the above advice and use the display device it will end up on as the monitoring device, if you can.
I am not near my FCP machine right now, so I can't try the test -- but I will try to revert my display color profile to stock apple LCD, and see what this brings. I know that FCP has simply NOT looked correct to me on my machine.
What do the "big guns" who are using FCP and having to use pre-defined creative print elements, created in AI or Photoshop or whatever -- all color matched for print, what do you guys do when you need to integrate this into FCP?
ARE FCP editors using Apple's 1.8 gamma (I guess you must because FCP uses it regardless of your colorsync profile, per the above article). ???
I set it to Source and have had no problems because I create still images on the same machine with the default gamma of 1.8. I think what happened was you created the images in Photoshop with a colorsync profile of 2.2 on the monitor but perhaps a different profile embedded (if any). When you brought it into FCP, FCP automatically assumed it was created at a gamma of 1.8 and boosted to 2.2 but as the images was not created at 1.8, it was already very bright to begin with and so was boosted x2. That's my theory.

  • Getting material from dvd in fcp

    Hi!
I don´t know how to get material (I suppose digibeta from TV) in fcp. I only get Video and Audio seperated! Will the quality of the material be better, if I get the original digibeta material?
    Help!
    Mel

I'm not sure what your situation is there, Melanie. Is the material encoded onto a viewable DVD? Or a QuickTime stored on it as a DVDROM? If encoded as a DVD, then yes, you would be far better off getting the original source tapes. If the QuickTimes are stored on a DVDROM, be sure to drag them to your media HD before using them, they won't playback fast enough from the DVD.

  • Transferring from Vegas to FCP

    hi all,
has anyone had to / managed to transfer a work in progress from Vegas (PC) to Final Cut Pro (Mac) successfully?
From what i can see, Vegas can export AAF, but FCP can't read it.
FCP can read XML, but Vegas can't export it.
Tried exporting an EDL from Vegas, but FCP won't read it!?
    HELP
    nG

We used to use 'Cui Bono - EDL Convert' to make DAW's talk. We would go from/to VEGAS Pro Tools Cool Edit Pro. It seemed to work well enough to get the info out of one and into the other. Naturally, we still had to do some tweaking to get things totally back in order. But this was when I was heavy into Audio Production. I'm not sure if 'Cui Bono - EDL Convert' does video. You may want to check 'em out and see what there Support recommends.
The guys I work with at a local Studio are telling me to bring the project in, Export to AVID, then let the AVID Exort to FCP. Obviously I can't do that but if you have an AVID readily available... this may work for you.
3rd suggestion is to look into 'Automatic Duck'. They have a plugin that will convert VEGAS FCP.
4th - I would say... do this project in VEGAS.
Personally, my VEGAS system is SOLID. Once I get a project there, it usually stays there till Final Export.
Remembering my days of Audio work and trying to go back and forth between DAW's using EDL's... I do NOT want to go back. This sometimes creates more of a Headache than it's worth. All the time you spend trying to get it to translate correctly could be spent Editing. The Frustration is NOT why I'm in it... I like the SATISFACTION of a completed project.
Nowadays... I Map out my Projects before I start them so I sort of have an Idea as to what/where it will need to go and at what stage in the process. Same as I StoryBoard in PreProduction... I also StoryBoard in PostProduction. May be OverKill but I've found myself running into less problems that way.

  • How do i create a jpeg image from clips in fcp

    Stephen

Select clip in timeline and place the playhead over the frame you want to save as a JPEG. Open the share window ( Button on far right of tool bar) and select 'Save current frame'. If you don't see that option click on add destination and select the Save current frame choice. It will be added to your share options.

When i try to import from itunes into FCP 7 i get error, file error; 39 files recognized,0 access denied 243 unknown

Be careful,  FCP is an open system which is great, but it allows you to work with formats that are not completely compatible with fcp and can cause serious problems down the road.  You can check the formats of all audio files brought into fcp by selecting them in the browser and hitting command-9,  Use compressor to convert all audio files to 48k 16 bit aiffs before importing to fcp.  There's a preset for this format in the apple presets.  You mention video files.  The same thing holds.  In particular, avoid bringing in h264 quicktime movies.  Convert to an fcp friendly format like prores using compressor.

  • How to import music file from itunes to fcp?

thanks in advance. I burned from itunes a track on to a cd. then tried to upload from cd to fcp. it plays for about 5 seconds, then stops with error msgs:
    "turn off unlim rt"
    lower compression rate"
or "lower pref for real time audio track"
I'm new to fcp and am stuck. can't find help in the books either. any way to just lift a music file straight from itunes to fcp.
    thanks.

The "media drive" isn't a mac thing...it is a video editing thing. This is a drive that is separate from your main computer's hard drive where you store ALL of your captured footage, audio, video elements, graphics, still photos...everything you use in your video project. You should NOT be using your system drive for this.
This drive, on the low end, can be a firewire drive. 7200RPM at least.
You need to copy the music files OFF of the CD and onto your media drive...and you really should be organized about this. Organization is a HUGE part of video editing.

  • Waking computer monitors from sleep causes FCP capture to fail

I'm having trouble capturing DVCam material from an HDV deck (in PAL), using FCP 6.0.3. As I'm doing a long digitize (several hours of material at a time), I like to put my monitors to sleep while capturing. Normally, this works fine (and hasn't caused any problems - I've been doing this for a long time). On this current project, every time I wake the monitors to check the progress of digitizing, it appears to cause FCP & cancel capturing the clip that it is currently capturing.
I've cleared out & reset all of my preferences, zapped the P-Ram, made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
Does anybody have a suggestion for me about why waking the monitors would be throwing the capturing process out of whack?

I've ... made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
You're capturing to an 85% full USB2.0 drive ?? I'm betting that when you wake the monitor you're seeing an error ... but not because of the waking of the monitor! FWIW you should always try to keep your drives less than 80% full ... beyond that and you're asking for serious performance degradation. That and of course USB drives are wholly unsuited for video production with FCP. (FCP really doesn't like devices that cannot handle sustained data transfer).
That said, what monitor are you using? How are you putting them to "sleep"? How are you waking them? Exactly is the error that you are seeing .. or is there no error but the capture just stops? Do you lose all the footage captured to that point or do you at least keep the footage captured so far?

  • Question about taking Images from video in FCP

I just recently upgraded from pinnacle to FCP 7 and am loving it. My question is when I try to take a still Image from video using Quick Time Conversion, the image comes out blurry or with bars around the edges of people. At first I thought It was because I was trying to capture a moving Image, but then I tried it with someone standing still and I ran into the same problem.
    I shoot with a Canon XH-A1

Take the exported file to Photoshop and use Image Size to correct the aspect ratio of the image. Apply the Deinterlace filter in Photoshop to remove the interlacing.

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?

Any success or regret stories about a total switch from Avid to FCP?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Final Cut Studio 5.1

I'm currently working on a job in a facility that has 3 FCP systems and uses Terrablock networked storage. I was 3 months here so I saw a lot of the good and bad with this system. It's Fiber channel so quite fast but there were a lot of issues with the compability of the OS. When working it worked well. The Avid Unity systems are very solid and proven.
The biggiest issue I have with FCP in this enviroment is it's great if you keep a project on the same system but when you start moving edits around then you get into the media managment limitations of FCP. A large project with lots of media, audio, gfx of different types, lots of renders, can be a pain when moving and reconnect on a different system. In theory it should be flawless as you point back to the proper folders and drives but it rarely is. It can be done is just takes time. And the better the editor is with his/her media managment then the easier it is. Avid's media managment works much different so by nature it's a bit easier in the networked world. We'll see what FCP has at NAB to make this better.
Bottom line, FCP vs. Avid is a debate that will rage. I use and enjoy them both on an almost weekly basis so I can argue the + an - of both. They are both tools, same buttons, different places.

  • Going from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 crops edges

Okay it's late on a Friday and I'm bad at math so there's two reason why I can't figure this out.
My sequence/footage is 1920x1080, and the destination is YouTube, which recommends 1280x720.
So I export with QT conversion, set to 1280x720 ("preserve aspect ratio" box not checked).  The resulting video is cropped!
In the Finder it says it is 1280x720, but when I open it in QT and look at the Inspector, it says it's 1248x702.
I might not have noticed the small amount of cropping, but my video had a border around it and now it's gone.
I don't know if it's a problem with going from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 or if FCP/QT always crop stuff and I've just never noticed before.
Has anyone ever experienced this before, or have a solution?  (Or have a nice way of telling me I'm cuckoo?)

This is most likely the clean aperture "feature" of QT Player, which shouldn't affect how it's displayed anywhere else, including YouTube. The video probably isn't really cropped, QT Player is just displaying it as cropped.
If you have QT Player 7, you can check this by going to Window>Show Movie Properties>Presentation tab. The "Conform aperture to" option is probably checked and set to "Clean". If you uncheck it, you should see the full frame.
In QT Conversion, there are two 1280x720 options, "1280x720 HD" and "HD 1280x720 16:9". The first one should not set the aperture to clean, but the second option (which is listed with NTSC & PAL sizes), will.
However, I also recommend exporting self-contained & running it through Compressor.

  • Looking for FCP - Avid - FCP workflow suggestion

I work with FCP on projects where we capture an entire film (two reels, about 20GB DVPal), then edit this down to 30 or so sec spots and then online at Blackmagic 10bit. Right now we have some freelancers who will be working on their own computers at home using Avid Express HD on Mac laptops, and then delivering us an edl of their cut. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way where we could capture the film here and then transfer to an external drive for the freelancer to cut the promo that would work in Avid. I gave them a clip captured at DVPal to test, but it took over 5 minutes to convert a clip to OMF?? for use in Avid, and the clip was only 1min30 long, which isn't much use when we will be giving them a 90 min film. I know this seems like an odd way to do it, but we're trying to create the least amount of work at both ends.
I don't know anything about Avid but figured since the workflow begins in FCP, I should post here, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and Automatic Duck isn't possible due to cost restraints, not sure if it would help anyway.
Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   XRaid Final Cut Studio

Since avid uses the OMFI format then there is no easy direct way to xfer media between the two. You can take the diged files from FCP (which are quicktime) and import them into Avid but they are transcoded to OMFI and I am almost certain (but not 100% - and not at my Avid this month so I can't test) that you loose timecode.
The couple of time I've had to do just this I had the material dubbed to DVCam for capture in Avid. Simple, cheap. Timecode is fine. Capture in Avid, make the edit, export EDL (taking care not to use fx and things that won't transfer), then recapture from originals in FCP. Good luck.

        Oh no Mr.Ected!
I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.
