Going From PC to 27 in iMac

I just ordered my new iMac today as my Dell is dying. I have PS5.6 on my
Dell and it works just great but because of pc problems, I cannot use it. Up
to this time it worked perfect. LightRoom 3.6 still works great... so far.
I was going to upgrade tomorrow to CS6 (Apple) and LightRoom 4.1 as well.
However I am just a little concerned with LightRoom 4.1 as a lot of people
have problems with it. Might be my imagination..  however should I be
concerned with the upgrade of LightRoom 4.1. If I go ahead with the upgrade,
I will get CS6 and LightRoom 4.1. Otherwise I could go back to CS5.6 and
LightRoom 3.6.
Thanks for your insight into this.
Regards..

Impossible to answer: those who have had problems will say likely yes; those (like me) who have no problems with Lr 4.x will say no.
Only you will be able to tell if it's an issue for you.

I have limited space on my new ipad. How can I limit the number of songs from my itunes on my imac from going to my ipad when I connect the two?

you can do this by keeping the external hard drive connected and doing the following
-hold shift key down on computer while opening iTunes and a prompt will appear to choose a library
-select choose library, iTunes should bring up your explorer windows where you can search for the external HD
-after you find the external HD find the iTunes folder you just copied to it
-after opening the iTunes folder look for the file that says iTunes library.itl or if you can't see that extenstion just look for a document looking thing in the iTunes folder that shows up as a database file
-double click the database file and boom iTunes should load your library without having to copy it to the computer
PS: do make sure that if you are going to do it this way, make sure that the external HD is connected at all times, because if you don't then you will get exclamation marks next to your iTunes songs
double PS: if you are unsure how to find out if the iTunes library file is a database file just right click it and choose properties and under the type it should say database file
    hope this helps:)

  • Going from a G4 12" powerbook to a new iMac

    hi there,
we bought a new iMac for family use a few months ago. we did not have a firewire cable when we first started it so i was not able to migrate all of the stuff on my 12" G4 powerbook to the new computer. for a while i thought i just wanted to migrate just movies, pics, and my iTunes library (all of which suck up about 50GB of space on my 60GB powerbook). but over time, i have decided that it is time to move everything from the powerbook and put it on the iMac.
i am wondering if i can just re-install leopard (which came with the iMac) and make the iMac act as if it is brand new and starting for the first time and use the firewire cable to migrate everything. there is nothing really saved on it that i can't save to a CD-ROM. i installed a few applications on there (MS office suite, appleworks, etc.) but i can re-load that stuff.
if i don't do that, i could use migration assistant but that seems tedious and in reality, with my powerbook screen dimming and losing life over time, it seems to make sense to move everything from the laptop to the iMac and just use the laptop for internet access when traveling.
    thoughts? help?

There's really no need to migrate everything. In fact it's a bad idea because the PB is not an Intel Mac and you might migrate things that will make your iMac stop working. I suggest you just use Target Disk Mode to copy over only the files you need. See the following:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist

    Hi TakesTwo2Tango,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you should definitely be seeing a plus sign after tapping Edit, so I would try a couple relatively easy things (closing the Music app, resetting the iPhone):

  • I just jazzed up my 2 Ghz iMac with 10.6.8, and 4 gigs of memory. I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!), but now I have a thin yellow line way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom. This is really strange! Any input?

I'm VERY happy with the results (fast!). However, the really strange thing is this - there is now a thin yellow line, way over on the right side of the screen, which goes from top to bottom, and stays there no matter where I go or what I do. I've never seen anything like this! It was not there before I did the upgrades. Anyone out there ever heard of such a preposterous thing ~ or have any ideas on how to get rid of it?

    Hello Mark,
It's going to mean a lot of reading but you should study the 'More like this' legend to your post's immediate right.  >>>>>>>>   plus some of the links within each.
The problem is well explored with much guidance on what to do and where to go.

  • How do i transfer photos from a pc to an imac

how do i transfer photos from a pc to an imac please

    Hi Matty,
The easiest way is to transfer your photo library on your PC to a Flash Drive, then insert that drive into your Mac and import the photos to iPhoto. Once you insert the Flash Drive into your Mac, iPhoto shoud automatically launch, and should recognize that you have photos to be imported. You just click on the Import button, and away it goes.
    Hope this helps,

I'm converting from a PC to  iMac. On the PC I have many Inbox folders with PR info for distribution. How do I get these folders from the PC to the iMac? I've used the Windows e mail Inbox folders for an easy access filing cabinet for years, as this all goes out on e mail. Thanks for assisting me!

I think the easiest way would be to use Migration Assistant to get all that over...

  • How to move iPhoto Library from  MacBookPro (Leopard) to new iMac (Mavericks)

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new iMac and want to move my iPhoto Library from my older (2008) MacbookPro. Have looked it up and tried to do so, by copying the iPhotoLibrary file from the old machine to the new, and starting iPhoto with option key down & pointing to the new library. When that didnt work, I tried booting with the option & command down, and attempted to Repair, and then to Rebuild the Library.
In all cases, iPhoto opens, but doesnt see any photos in the iPhoto Library. The iPhoto Library works fine on the old macbook pro.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks
    Tom

Ok I know it's been awhile but I finally was able to try your suggestion.
I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager on my macbook pro, connected my macbook pro to my new iMac and did a Rebuild Library from the existing library on the macbook pro, setting it up to save to my new iMac.
It began to do the rebuild (though there were many "unreadable files") and went through the operation, which looked like it was going to take several hours to complete.
But at a certain point (after an hour or so), the macbook pro complained that I dont have enough space on my startup disk!!
So I can only guess that the rebuild must have done something to the original iPhoto Library after all (even though the settings on my iPhoto are to NOT  copy files to Library on import if that matters...). The Library is 32 Gb though I dont remember what it's size was before...
Sure enough, my starup Macintosh HD now has only 1GB space on it. Yikes!
    I stopped the rebuild process.
Not sure if I need to now just trash the original library to make space on my HD (of course I can save it elsewhere in case its useful), but since the rebuild didnt even get halfway through its process, the rebult library on the new iMac isnt going to do me any good. Maybe I've just lost all the years of work I've done organizing my library. Maybe I just need to start over with new kind of software (or using iPhoto start again from scratch on the new iMac).
What do you think happened? I thought the rebuild wouldnt affect the original library.

  • Going From G4s to Duo 2 Core Questions

I'm going from 2 G4's to Duo 2 Cores (shipment to arrive early next week). Three questions to those who have already done it, to avoid problems:
    1) I will import my data from the G4s to the new Macs via Target Disk Mode (no Migration to avoid bringing something over that might muck up the works).
Which computer should I boot into Target Disk Mode - the source (G4) or destination (Duo 2 Core)?
Should I boot into Target Disk Mode and then firewire connect, or firewire connect and then boot into TDM?
    2) I currently use Office X (Word and Entourage) as my data staple; am upgrading with the purchase of the Duo 2 Cores to Office 2004.
How do I get my Office X Word and Entourage preferences (Normal Template; Address Book, etc) into Office 2004 once 2004 is loaded? Should I install the 2004 appliication onto the Duo 2 Cores, then copy over my Microsoft User Date from Office X (from the G4's to the new computers), then launch Office 2004 on the new computers and somehow import my prefernces; if so, how? If not, what's the best procedure?
    3) I use Firefox as my main browser. I do a lot of public records research. Most public records are in PDF format. I currently use the PDF Browser Plug-in (private edition) for viewing. Is that a safe option for Intel Macs? If not, any alternatives suggested?
Lots of questions, but thanks in advance for any input and assistance!
Any other suggestions on a smooth transition will also be most appreciated!
    Again - Thanks and Cheers!
iMac Flat Panel Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    iMac CDRW

    1) I connected my new MacBook to my turned of PowerBook while the MacBook was on. Then I turned on the PowerBook booting into FireWire Target Disk Mode. BTW, I copied Library folder from my PowerBook onto the MacBook's desktop. The rest I just copied directly into my new MacBook personal directory. IOW I opened up both Document folders and copied from PowerBook to MacBook. I was more careful about what I copied from the old Library folder and I did just a little at a time so if trouble developed I could remember what I'd just copied in and remove it. This minimized the number of programs I had to reserialize and configure.
    2) This is a good question - I bought MacOffice and used it with the PowerBook. I don't remember the process of moving in - whether it was done automatically or whether I was prompted for where to import files from. I just remember it being pretty painless. Perhaps the safest method would be to install Office on the old G4 first and get it all sorted out there first.
    3) There's an Intel updated version of the plug-in available - I'm using it.

  • Going from Windows to Mac

My brother-in-law just ordered a new iMac from the Apple store. He's leaving it up to me to get all his files transferred from the PC to the iMac. I have an external hard drive formatted for Windows that I will use for this. He has an iTunes library on his Windows PC. Can I re-create the library on his new iMac using the external hard drive?
On Apple's support site, I found an article explaining how to back up an iTunes library with an external drive, then restoring the library backup. Is this all I need to do? Will it work going from PC to iMac? Will any songs he purchased from iTunes be included in the transfer?

I think you'll find all the answers you need in this article: Move iTunes from PC to MAC, http://www.macworld.com/article/146958/2010/03/moveitunes_windowsmac.html

  • Moving from iBook G4 to new iMac

I am getting a new iMac tomorrow and I have a couple of questions. I've read as much as I can, but I'm still a bit confused.
I'm going from iPhoto '06 to '08. I'm wanting to know how to get my library from my iBook to the iMac. I understand that I need to copy my iPhoto library to the new iMac, but where do i put the library? If I put it in the pictures folder, what do I do with the existing file (package?) that says "iPhoto Library"? Do I somehow bring that folder into that package? How does that work.
Also, will the upgrade from '06 to '08 be a pain? It it seamless?
I know this is an iPhoto topic, but I'm also wondering what to do with iWeb...what should I do with the domain package? I've heard that moving up from '06 to '08 has been a bit of a pain.
But one thing at a time. What should I do with the iPhoto library?
Thanks for reading and for your help!

But, one question is, what are file permission issues?
Each file or folder in Mac OS X has a specific owner and permissions set to it. Accounts other than the owner may not have read and write access to that folder. Running Batchmod sets the permissions on a group of items at once so your account has the proper access. If you drag the library over manually, doing this will take care of permission issues. Using the Migration Assistant will create a different Mac OS X user account and use that for the photos; it's probably easier to either use an external drive or connect the two machines with a FireWire or network connection, start up the old computer with the T key held down(FireWire) or log into it(network) and drag the folder over manually.
Also, is the new "Package" in iPhoto '08 important?
The package was added to reduce the chance that people will damage the iPhoto library by modifying it in the Finder.
One more thing (and I'm sorry to be so clueless on this), what will I need for the Migration Assistant? Just a regular ethernet cable? USB?
The Migration Assistant requires a FireWire cable.

  • Transferring settings from old Mac o new iMac

Hi! I just placed an order for a new iMac on the Apple store. Currently I sync my iPhone, iPad and iPods with my PowerBook G4. Once the new Mac arrives I plan to sync my iOS devices with it, I understand that there is a migration or setup assistant that will transfer all my settings from the old Mac to the new one.
Are there any tips or special precautions I must take? Should I use a USB cable, Firewire or use wi-fi?
    Thanks,
    Cesar

You can use an ethernet cable, a FireWire cable if your laptop has a FireWire port or a wireless network. In your case the ethernet is probably the easiest because even if your laptop has FW it is likely to be FW400 and the new iMac has FW800, so you would need an adapter or adapting cable.
You may wish to read up on the precautions for going from PowerPC to Intel Macs.

  • Trouble migrating from Power Mac G4 to iMac

    Hi,
I have a Power Mac G4 MDD (Mirrored Drive Door) with Leopard (10.5.8) installed. I'm trying to migrating my info on the G4 to a new iMac (mid 2011) with Lion.
I first attempted to transfer my info via Migration assistant and a firewire cable. The computers saw each other and started the process, but hung at "5 hours remaining" for over 24 hours. I tried a second time with same results. I then tried reinstalling Lion on the new iMac and attempted migration via Setup Assistant instead. This time the iMac would not see the G4. I then did some research and downloaded the Migration assistant update for Leopard. Definitely thought this would be the solution and was stunned that the iMac will still not see the G4. Went back to Migration assistant again and no luck there either. Lastly, tried booting the G4 into Firewire target disk mode (no problem), but the iMac still does not see the G4.
I'm so frustrated at this point. Am REALLY trying to avoid having to manually transfer everything over and would just quit and do that at this point, but am confused by the fact that both machines were initially able to communicate (which did not result in sucessful migration, but at least the two machines saw each other at one time).
To recap, what happens now is:
Setup Assistant & Migration Assistant: iMac does not see the G4, but G4 DOES see iMac
Firewire Target disk mode: G4 goes into tdm no problem, but iMac continually looks for G4 and will not connect.
(Have downloaded to the G4 migration assistant update for Leopard: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1434)
I have so many hours into this process, it's unbelievable. I really need some help. Thanks ahead!
    ~Michelle

    Hi Michelle,
I first attempted to transfer my info via Migration assistant and a firewire cable. The computers saw each other and started the process, but hung at "5 hours remaining" for over 24 hours.
Hmmm, was this FW Network it sounds like?
The best way is to put the G4 in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then only the new iMac needs to run Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, but you don't choose from another computer, you choose from a Time Machine or other Disk, because now the G4 is only a Big FW Hard Drive.

        Oh no Mr.Ected!
I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.
