Google Chrome He Kernel Panic on MBPr / OSX 10.9.3

On both of my MacBook Pro Retinas (similar specs - 16GB RAM, biggest SSD HD, plenty of disk space) Google Chrome causes a kernel panic randomly, usually in the graphics driver (I assume based on call stack.) I know there were problems with this acknowledged way back in 2012 but it started happening for me again in the last couple of weeks.
Google Chrome is latest version: Version 35.0.1916.153 - up to date
Not sure what causes it activity-wise. Just browsing web and boom, gray screen. Always, always, always in the Google Chrome He process.
Any tips?

  • After Boot Camp installation, Kernel Panic when launching OSX partition

Hey guys. I have a mac mini (early 2009) with Mac OSX 10.6.2 running. I installed XP Professional Sp3 using the Boot Camp Assistant with no errors. It works fine. However, whenever I launch the OSX partition, even in single-user mode, it Kernel Panics. What can I do to stop this?
I have a legal copy of XP and OSX, by the way.

this does not sound like a problem with anything on your drive then but rather a firmware issue. just to make sure, how are you booting from the DVD? reboot and hold "c" at the chime. any luck? if not reboot and hold option at the chime. this ought to boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose what to boot from.

  • Frequent Kernel Panics on eMac OSX 10.3.9

    Hi,
Sorry about the long post but am having a bit of a disaster so I'm providing as much information as possible, and have posted the panic log file as well:
This morning I installed the Billion BiPac 3012G Wireless USB adaptor and the related Mac 10.3 driver on my eMac. (there are no updates to this driver on the Billion website). It was working an absolute charm for a while, we connected to our airport network without a hitch - until I tried to adjust the settings for our network printer. Then I got the grey Kernel Panic screen (You need to restart).
I restarted and went through the same process (system prefs, printers and faxes, and double clicked on our network printer to adjust the settings) - and instantly got the same screen.
I restarted again and ran permissions verification and repair on the hard drive with no issue. Then as an added precaution I ran Cocktail (a disk utilities program) and as it was 'running the weekly cron reports' got the grey screen again. So I restarted, ran cocktail again - and got the grey screen at exactly the same point.
At this point I removed the new hardware.
I searched for panic.log and opened the most recent of the two files. As I was looking at it, grey screen again. After this I started getting the screen at frequent, random intervals.
Now I'm getting the restart screen frequently, even when I've left the computer alone with no programs open.
I reseated the ram in but that has not helped.
I've managed to get the log file off onto another computer, but I can't get it going long enough to uninstall the new driver or take any further troubleshooting methods.
Here is the log file - I'm hoping there might be someone out there who can decipher any of this and help me to understand what the problem is. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:

KPs are usually caused by a hardware problem - frequently RAM or USB devices. I don't think that the install of the drivers/hardware could cause a RAM problem. OS X is "pickey" about RAM quality. Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM
Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Also look at this link.12-Step Program to Isolate Freezes and/or Kernel Panics

  • Kernel panic on Mac OSX 10.9.5

Since couple of days, my MacBook is suffering from kernel panic and keep rebooting by itself. I am new to Mackbook and can not figure out why. I have applied all the software updates, but it did not help unfortunately. Following are the panic logs:

I would really appreciate if somebody assist me getting rid of this issue.
    Thanks in advance!!

You are experiencing a page fault (reference to an area outside of what is owned by the software in question) in the AirPort driver, in a Mac OS X kernel that does not have obvious third-party modifications to it.
This should not be happening. Your Mac OS X image may be Bad.
If you do not already have a Trusted Backup, that should be your Top Priority.
If this is a new MacBook, and it is within the first 90 days of ownership, contact telephone support and ask them to help you. They will likely suggest a re-Install, right over the Mac OS X you have in place now. This is intended to do no damage, but you should always have a Backup.

  • Known issues with CUDA 5.0.17 and 5.0.24 driver (including crashes and kernel panics) on Mac OSX

We have recently learned of some issues with the new CUDA drivers from Nvidia that cause crashes and kernel panics in some circumstances, including when switching between applications that use the GPU.
    See this page for details.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

Hi Mr Savage, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Unless we're dealing with some foriegn language I'm not aware of here, then this sort of stuff...
    Machine-cchc k caapaibiiiiet
would likely indicate HW of some kind... EAM, CPU, Mobo, but to elinate orger things like SW, unplug any peripherals you can, boot off the Install disk and see how long it runs off that... several Utilities will show up once you put in the Language.

  • Downloaded Google Chrome and computer freezes

A week ago I downloaded Google Chrome and have noticed that if I leave Chrome open when the computer goes into sleep mode, that it freezes up. The only way to unlock it is to power off. Is this common?

It could be a Google problem or a MacBook problem. The cause is uncertain but you can read more about it in this thread:
New 2012 Macbooks, Google Chrome, and Kernel Panics
    and this Google forum: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/chrome/mac/VeMcAm13LkE

  • Erratic behaviour. Kernel Panic. RAM problem? HDD? iBook blues..

I dont know what's wrong with my iBook.
At first, safari kept on crashing. I deleted plists (Safari prefs files) and Safari ran again using new default plists... for awhile. Then it crashed and wouldnt start at all.
Then I got my first kernel panic (BSOD of OSX)
I reinstalled OSX TWICE trying to figure out if updates were causing the problem.
I also tried Apple Hardware test from my installation disc. Everyiting ok.
After that, I got a shock when my applications would not run! Safari would exit. YM crashed. MSNmsgr crashed. And then the kernel would panic (like BSOD).
I also removed RAM i recently installed.
    PC2700 256MB Kingston.
According to Apple, the iBook G4 1ghz uses PC2100 RAM but is compatible with PC2700 RAM.
I tried Apple Hardware test again from my installation disc. Everyting is fine.
But the system hanged on startup. No login screen at all.
I tried reinstall OSX. But the installer (booted from DVD) does not detect my HDD!!!
shocked, i thought that my disk had failed.
Diskutility of the installer. cannot repair the volume.
    HFS: volume okay
    Volume ... corrupt.
    So, I erased the HDD.
Rebooted and now installer recognizes the disc.
So i just reinstalled OSX for the FOURTH time.
    Now im really confused...
What could have caused the HDD to become corrupt?
Was it incompatible RAM? (but the RAM should be compatible)
or is it my HDD failing?
    I ran diskwarrior.
SMART HDD reports indicate that the disc is running normally.
I am really confused. Dont know what could be the cause of the problem.
I cannot risk my computer being unable to boot again as i use it for work. And when OSX cannot boot and I had to reinstall (note, Install and archive was not available as OS DVD was a lower version than the installed version) and all my files were gone. Luckily, i had a backup.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is doubtful that you have been seeing is a kernel panic, since a kernel panic does not give you a blue screen.
The hard drive can be corrupted if you do a forced shutdown instead of a normal one. If you were stuck on a blue screen repeatedly, it is my assumption that you did repeated forced shutdowns. Any and every time you do one, you should repair the hard drive before continuing to work.
I don't understand why Archive and Install was not available to you. I have started over after updates with my 10.3.0 CD and used Archive and Install. There should be no problem in that regard.
The iBook G4 Discussions can be found here.

  • Kernel Panic when quitting Pro Tools

now i KNOW PT6.9.2 is not yet 100% certified for 10.4.5, but that never stoped that from worked flawlessly. it has worked perfectly for a while now. then, i installed a plug-in called master verb. it made al lthe names of my plug-ins on the mix and edit windows look all scrambly. also, it caused it to kernel panic upon quitting a few times. now, i looked at the installer log, and got rid of every single file it put into my system (which wasnt many at all). so after this, the problem persisted. same scrambly plug-in names and kernel panics. i installed the auto-tune plug-in and, even though its not functional, as long as the window that asks me to buy it comes up and i hit cancel, it makes the plug-in names perfect. only problem is the kernel panics. now is where apple may help. i contacted digidesign several times, but they have horrid tech support. i have been all over their forums, and no one could help.
    i have:
    repaired disk permissions several times
done many clean uninstalls of PT several times and went through the installer log and deleted EVERY single thing
i have done every single their tech support thread said, which included deleting prefrences and whatever
the only thing i have not done is reformat the drive. i have 70 gigs of apps, docs, songs, and sessions on this HD, and it wouldd be such a pain to reformat. i have alot of bvery important things that i dont think i have installers for anymore. i know the kernel panics have nothing to do with the external FW drive, seeing as i ran sessions from my mac's HD, and theres stil lthe panics. it only happens when i quit PT and it only happens about 40% of the time. i have opened and closed the same session 10 times, and 4 times it made me restart. i did the same exact thing each time. so im asking here because i know kernel panics are an OSX thing. Can i trash a certin file or something that OSX will replace or i can put back with the installer dvd? is there ANYTHING i can do? and if i have to reinstall, whats the best way to backup all my aplications and all my files? thanks in advance. sorry for the long story.

    The lines
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x400 - Inst access
    and
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0004): 0x400 - Inst access
in your panic log indicates an 0x400 (Instruction Access) panic. An 0x400 (Instruction access) panic occurs when the processor cannot access the next instruction to be executed.
Potential causes include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors. "Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid. Likewise, this opens the door to the potential for processor errors, i.e. defective processor or other problems with the logic board.
The Backtrace section of each panic log cites:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBUserClient(2.2.6)@0x344a0000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.2.8)@0x2dc23000
    com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(2.2.8)@0x2dc23000
This could imply that a defective or incompatible USB peripheral is involved, which can also mean the associated USB ports or cables.
All I can suggest at this point is that you again go back through the procedures outlined in my "Resolving Kernel Panics FAQ," including the "If all else fails" section.
Frankly, as you noted originally, ProTools 6.9.2 is only officially supported under Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, and 10.4.2, it's difficult to say if either:
    (a) Something is amiss with your system as a whole.
    (b) There is a USB-related issue you need to troubleshoot by process of elimination.
    (c) You've encountered some compatibility issue under 10.4.5 that is causing ProTools to panic on quit.
    (d) The MasterVerb plug-in may have changed something else on the system that was undocumented in the installation log. You might want to check their Web site or contact them to be sure you removed all of the components.
Beyond this and my FAQ, I'm unable to offer further advice based on the evidence you've provided.
    Good luck!

  • Kernel Panic 10.6.2 Unsolved Problem

I have been up and down search engines trying to figure out how to fix this problem I recently encountered on my iMac.
    The problem happend as followed:
I have a 32gb partition on windows vista on my imacs hard drive. Windows wanted me to do an update as usual, and i did. When it was in the third and final stage of configuring the update, the computer froze and I had to restart the computer.
Once i turned on the mac, there was scattered "stuck" pixels all over the screen, some were flashing blue.
I tried to enter windows through the option key at start up but it just brings me to a black screen.
When i try to boot in OSX it loads for an abnormal amount of time then brings me to the multilingual error message. I restarted several times reaching the same error, with the same "stuck" pixels.
I retested the PRAM, heard the two chimes.
THis time, the "stuck" pixels were in a new pattern, vertical lines down the screen, about 8 across every 2 inches.
After resetting the PRAM it still brings me to the black screen in vista and kernel panic message in OSX.
    Then...
I entered single user mode, and it found some errors using /sbin/fsck -fy
I ran the command a couple of times to ensure all errors were fixed and the "volume appears to be ok" appeared consistently.
I then used "shutdown -h now" and turned the mac back on.
The pixels were still on the screen and still brought me to the kernel panic screen, as well as the black screen in vista.
I gave up and left my imac off for about 5 hours.
I came back with new hope to try and fix the computer.
I removed all first party ram, two 1 gb sticks, then reinserted.
I turned on the mac and everything was fine.
For some reason the fans in the imac were on full power blowing really fast.
There was no more stuck pixels on the screen and it booted, very slowly, to OSX.
As soon as I entered I used the disk util and repaired permissions. There seemed to be many errors in the flash plugin folder. maybe about 30 of them.
I restarted the imac, and everything was fine, everything was back to normal speed.
Once the imac went into screen saver mode for about 15 min, the screen froze and the flurry screen saver looked distorted. I restarted the imac.
Once i restarted the imac the same "stuck pixels" were back.
I tried using all previous methods, all volumes appear ok in single user mode but I continue to receive the kernel panic message along with the pixels.
I can not start from the snow leopard dvd, because i get the kernel message.
I can not boot into safe mode, because of the kernel message.
I can not use a live linux CD because it takes me to a black screen.
Although I did notice one thing.
Once I use the /sbin/fsck -fy command follwed by the exit command, i receive a string of messages, checking the normal functions.
All appear ok but there is a message mentioning the NTFS partition log check not being clear, then it says unable to mount volume cant (read/write)
I am assuming the vista update somehow damaged something but i am unsure because I was able to boot normally into OSX twice after I received the symptoms the first time.
Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?
THank you for your time reading this very long post

    EXACTLY!
The same thing happened to me while in vista, in bootcamp.
I had just bought left for dead 2 and the game would suddenly freeze and loop audio constantly
I restarted the imac and it was fine.
I tried playing the game and the same thing happened.
So i figured it was some new windows update i didnt have.
So when vista was in the 3rd stage of configuring the update, the computer froze once more and once i restarted i began getting kernel panic issues.
When i was able to boot back into windows, after the kernel panic issues.
there were about 5 or 8 Big block of pixels, about 64x64, dancing around the screen flashing different colors. I brought me to the windows start up error screen where you choose to start in safe mode or not.
I selected start windows normally and then i received a blue screen of death...on a mac.
After that I have no longer been able to boot off of dvds, of any partitions.
I know it has to be issues with the graphics card, i dont believe its fried but maybe corrupt drivers. Is there some way to reinstall those drivers perhaps?
I called 2 local expert mac technicians and they are pointing to video card issues.
Which sounds true because the mac performs fine in VGA mode(single user mode, and apple hardware diagnostic tests)
The mac begins to boot OSX but i believe once it tries to load the video drivers it goes into a kernel panic.
Maybe we can solve this some how.
I will try to post the kernel panic logs.

  • Kernel Panics When sleeping and waking.

I have had so many of these lately. Is this pretty common since 10.4.3? It kinda *****. I think it might have to do with the new safe sleep feature that was added. I have reset nvram, pram, pm, formated and installed tiger. But with 10.4.3 it just keeps kernel panicing. I am almost considering selling my laptop w/ my boxes copy of tiger for ppc, because applecare hasn't been too responsive in this matter.
What do I do? I thought it was probably apple's hardware that isn't solid enough, but I think it might just be the latest patch. So has anyone else ran into this? I have seen a bunch of similar posts, but everyone's experioence seems to be a little different. I always get that "Turn off your computer" kernel panic message in osx (yeah the cute multiligual BSOD, except it is pretty and grey).
Oh yeah, don't post all that "OSX kernel panic troubleshoot guide." I am not a newbie, I know all that stuff, and I have run most of the tests I can. I should try my copy of techtool though. But I just don't think it is hardware, and if it is then I am still sore with apple since they make the hardware too .

Is this pretty common since 10.4.3? It kinda *****. I think it might have to do with the new safe sleep feature that was added.
Time to come clean. Did you enable Safe Sleep following instructions such as these:
    http://www.andrewescobar.com/archive/2005/11/11/how-to-safe-sleep-your-mac/
If so, then the most likely reason you're experiencing kernel panics is because you're running it on an unsupported system. Safe Sleep is (currently) only supported on the new 15" and 17" PowerBooks (with the high resolution displays).
If not, please post the latest entry in panic.log.
    Matt

  • Kernel Panics on 2006 MBP (OSX 10.6.8)

    Hello everyone,
I've been rather vexed by this reocurring kernel panic issue that I've been having. I recently inherited my sister's old 2006 15" 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo MBP, which for all intents and purposes is brand new - save for the HDD, which is now 7 years old -  after it was pretty much totalled by Safeware after a fall accident some time last year. It was having some weird problems when it came into my hands, so I swapped out the RAM (2GB DDR2 SDRAM) and completely reformatted the hard drive (to OSX 10.6.8) earlier this week. The previous issues with freezes seems to have been resolved, but now I'm dealing with intermittent kernel panics, particularly when I use Google Chrome.
Here is my last kernel panic log:

If anyone can please help me figure out what is wrong with this thing, I'd be terribly appreciative. This is my only laptop for personal use right now, and the kernel panics are driving me nuts. I made an appointment with the local Genius Bar, but their earliest available for my schedule was next Tuesday. If I can get this figured out this weekend before I have to make the trek over, I'd be very happy.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the advice, Kappy. I'll give it a try.
Curiosity, though - and this probably is a stupid question - but is "Quit Using Chrome" a permanent solution, or a temporary one? I rather dislike Safari as a browser, and I stopped using FFox over two years ago. This is the first time I've ever had kernel panics associated with Chrome, and previous to using this machine I was on a slightly older 2006 CoreDuo MBP. I remember reading that a year or two back one of the Chrome releases caused issues with late model machines, but this thing is far from late mode.

  • After installin OSX Lion i keep getting kernel panics

    Hello,
i have recently installed the OSX Lion and i keep getting these errors which shut down my computer, by shutdown i mean the screen goes completely black and if there is music playing the sound starts glitching like its stuck, i have noticed however that this happens when i use mission control and i have many windows open, last time it happened i had microsoft word, microsoft powerpoint, itunes, google chrome and mail open, i used mission control and it crashed.
    the report is as follows:

Might try Cinebench to test. I doubt you'll get too much, unless it fails completely.
You could try a clean install, if you have a good backup and see if the problem persists.
But don't migrate anything until you're sure the issue is gone.

  • Reproducible kernel panic on Mid 2012 MBA5,1 OSX 10.7.5

I'm 100% sure all these issues started after the latest upgrades. However, since I did the firmware one first and system one later I can't be sure which caused it. I did do a time machine backup just before the OS update, will the OS restore itself or just my user files? I think I'll have to do a complete restore from recovery partition.
Either way here are the issues.
Everytime I let the computer go into sleep mode, and then wake it up, it kernel panics. This does not happen if I close the lid. I have to leave it to go into sleep mode on its own. It only panics when I press a key to wake it up, before that I can still ssh into it so it hasn't paniced yet.
I found some other posts with these trap codes, indicating the HD4000 chipset in my MBA. Many indicate a Chrome related issue but I never use Chrome, though it is installed.
The other reports are fairly identical except for the CPU ID which differs in each. I hope I'm just adding my complaint to the stack here because there were a lot of MBA posts relating to this issue, many of them  recent purchases. I'm doing to try a time machine restore just for the **** of it.
Ever since these issues started I also started seeing network problem when trying to use software update. It asks me if I want to diagnose the issue but it only says my connection is working, which it is in general. This also started at the same time as the panics.

This gets rid of the crap that causes the KPs after sleep MBP mid 2012. All the stuff floating around from me playing with different utilities over the years!

What exactly gets rid of the KP? All I see in that thread is troubleshooting by listing installed services, kexts and startup items.
I've checked out my own and since my MBA is fairly new, only used as a thin client, I had nowhere near the amount of items displayed in the linked thread.
If it was something I installed then it would most likely be Microsoft Office, Valve Steam or Oracle VirtualBox. I don't know what Adobe fpsaud is, maybe something with flash? Google Keystone is Chrome's auto updated if I'm not mistaken.
I don't think any of this explains the Kernel Panic, and definitely not the inability to use any software updated due to network errors. Even though my network works fine and network diagnostics says it works too.
