Google mail outage and Snow Leopard's mail/address book bugs. Coincidence?

I'm going out on a limb here, but it just occurred to me, reading through all the problems people are having with Snow Leopard's upgrade to Mail and Address book AND the Gmail outages last week. Many of us had our preferences set to sync with Google (and Yahoo, although Yahoo doesn't seem to be a problem . . . yet). I know that when I did my first sync after the upgrade, all **** broke loose in my Address book, with double and triple entries, inability to update entries, address book in Mail is different than the Address Book application, proper. Etc, etc.
And all of my problems were duplicated in Google's address book. I deleted the link between the two, and reinstalled Mail and Address book applications from the Snow Leopard install disk. That stopped the sync problems (screwed up my .Mac, royal, the first time. Fortunately I had a good archive and back up. But Time machine was useless in this case.) But, Address book and Mail are still very buggy.
Any way . . . I'm wondering if the problems at Google, considering the coincidence of time line, might have something to do with this upgrade and the number of Apple users attempting to upgrade and sync.
Just a thought. Probably no connection.
Thanks, I hope Apple gets this fixed soon. It's very frustrating.

  • Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

    Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi Guys,
First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2148553
I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
    servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
    Primary address = 192.168.1.192
    Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
    DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
    dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
    NSLOOKUP hostname
    and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?
Thank you all for the help in advance!

  • Mail address book bug or is it me?

Udsing Leopard 10.5.2. When I copy an address from mail to address Book the names reverse. John Jones becomes Jones John. Happens regardless of how AB is configured. Any Ideas on how to get this feature to work correctly?

I managed to fix it, I think -- as long as it stays fixed. I deleted all the AddressBook preference files I found on my computer. There were three of them: one in ~/Library/Safe Preferences (com.apple.AddressBook.plist 12-21-03). and two in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.AddressBook.plist & com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist). In AddressBook I have my ordering preferences set as Display First Name Last Name, and Order by Last Name. Don't know if trashing all the plist files for AddressBook will do the trick for you, but it seems to have done so for me.

  • Snow Leopard crashes : Safari, Address Book, TextEdit, etc

I write with a problem that appeared with no warning on Sunday after, I believe, the latest iTunes update. The gist is that I can no longer run Safari, Address Book, and TextEdit. Also, other OS app (such as System Preferences) crash regularly. The problem is solid and repeatable. Here is a snippet of a typical Safari crash:

I will be grateful to learn if others have experienced these problems, if they have found ways to fix them, or if the experts listening might have some ideas.
    Thanks.

  • Mail / Address book bug

    Hi all,
Think i've found a bug and was hoping someone could confirm i'm not the only one with it.
    Open Mail
    Create New Message
    Open "Address" from the toolbar
Try and select and drag contact(s) into either the "to", "cc", or "Bcc" fields
This doesn't work for me, so i can't send to multiple people.
I have to go in the "+" at the end of the "to" field to add them individually.
    Thanks
    Darren

I found this thread (and several others) through the same frustration of not being able to add exisiting Group Names simply by typing the name into the To: field of Mail on Mavericks . Thanks to the various responses here, which confirm this previously exisiting functionallity is now broken, I at least have a work-around.
It seems that it is only Smart Groups which no longer work. I found these really useful as all it needs is a peice of text in the Notes field of an individual Contact to automtically keep the Smart Group updated. The work around is to create a new 'static' Group in Contacts and drag the names from the Smart Group into there. Now, typing the static group name in the To: field enters all the required recipients in one go - just how it used to be.
I agree with the OP, however, that this is a bug which should be fixed in a future version of Mavericks. Please.

  • Mail with leopard on one and snow leopard on another?

I have Leopard on my MBP and Snow Leopard on my new iMac. When I went to open Mail on the iMac it asked if I wanted to convert all my mail. If I do it, will I still be able to read it from my MBP?

    Hi
Yes, the SL upgrade won't affect your mail on any other computers.

  • Can I sync Palm TI with native OS X.5 (Leopard) mail, address book, and calendar?

It's too late for me to return the Palm and I hope I have not wasted my money.  Can I sync with the Mac mail, address book, and calendar?  Or must I switch over and use the Palm desktop software?  Thanks for any clues about how to work with my Mac and the Palm TI.

You could try the missingsync software from www.markspace.com

  • Using one program Application on both Lion and Snow Leopard

I have to constantly reboot/restart between Lion on my New Thunderbolt Mini and Snow Leopard off and External Drive. What is the recommendation for using programs (which are built to run on both) such as iwork pages. Should I use one program off the Main Lion Internal HD? or as I have now - Maintian two programs, one on each hard drive. I can see Lion is having difficulty as it can see the other program and sometimes it launches the version on the SL drive. When in Snow Leopard the OS cannot search and therefore not register items not included in the Main Boot Drive.
I am a single user, so I'd like consistency in maintaining templates (and now version!?!) when I want to draft a letter and can't waste time to reboot. All my documents on both OS's are directed to a 3rd Drive to effectively keep my sanity. I was syning the preferences previously for mail and passwords, etc but recently the functions of Lion have expanded so much beyond SL  as that I had to swtich off this sync to avoid conflicts.
Should I keep using two programs or when available use a single version. Noting this wont be on the boot drive of one of them. If I go to one. Can I keep the other on its boot drive in case of transporting it to another machine. Is there a way to park it so it's not referenced to use when I launch by opening a file? I though about zipping it? What happens when a version update might excel beyond SL? The current programs known already have 2 versions residing on each boot drive. If I go to 1 and a software update comes along, that would be a problem.
Any and all experinces and suggestions are appreciated.

I have to constantly reboot/restart between Lion on my New Thunderbolt Mini and Snow Leopard off and External Drive.
Why? There is no good way to do what you're doing.

Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
      1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
      1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the
update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it.
Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've
          restarted.
      2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through
other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
      3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other
interruption occurs during  installation, use the standalone installer (see below)
from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation  is in progress do not use
          the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
          1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
          2. Restart the computer.
          3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
          4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
              logo appears.
          5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
          6. Follow instructions.
After installing Snow Leopard you should update it by downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps

  • In limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard - stupidly didn't back up

I've got an old-school black MacBook, about four years old now. I never cared enough to upgrade it to Snow Leopard, but now I want Lion. So, I borrowed my parents' five-license Snow Leopard install disc and started off on the journey to upgrade to Snow Leopard, download the App Store update, then download and install Lion. I didn't get far.
First, let me say that I didn't back up my hard drive. Like an idiot. Yes, I know it was stupid, so there's no need to say anything. My previous installs (a few clean re-installs) have gone without a hitch, so I figured I'd trust Apple and just run the installation without backing up. Dumb.
The Snow Leopard installation started fine, but was interrupted when the installer said the install failed. Restart, try again. Booting from the install DVD, things seemed to be going fine a second time around -- picked my language, got to the install set-up screen, picked Macintosh HD as my installation drive. And then things stopped working. The installer said my HD could not be written to and that it needed repair. So I went to Disk Utility to try that. Repair Disk wasn't available, so I clicked Verify Disk. That got interrupted when it said the disk needed to be repaired, after which the Repair Disk button was clickable. Tried to repair, but apparently my HD is screwed beyond the capabilities of Disk Utility.
I tried to reboot the MacBook from the HD, which Disk Utility said still had Leopard running on it. The computer wouldn't boot up. Safe Boot didn't work. So, without any other real options, I thought I'd try my luck by just trying the install again. Booted up from the install DVD, and ran into the same issues. Didn't magically fix itself, of course. So my MacBook is stuck in limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard, won't boot from the HD and won't let me repair the disk when booted from the DVD. What do I do?
I plan to try a couple third-party disk-utility programs tomorrow (8/25/11) to recover the files on my HD. There's not much I care about on there (just some iPhone photos and my resume, really), so doing a clean wipe of the HD and installing Snow Leopard is an option. But I'd of course rather be able to recover my personal files. Is this possible at this point?
Another question I have regarding a clean wipe: If I end up having to clean off the HD and lose all my data, I'll lose the iTunes configuration for my iPhone. Will iTunes be able to import my apps and settings from my phone if I plug it in?
    Thank you very much.

  • I tried copying a photo and pasting it in another event/group within iPhoto but the paste feature doesn't work.  This wasn't an issue with both Leopard and Snow Leopard.  Do you have any solutions or tips?

I bought a new MacBook Pro with OsX Lion as operating system.  I use iPhoto a lot and when I tried copying a photo then pasting it to another event/group, the 'paste' feature doesn't work.  This wasn't the case with Leopard and Snow Leopard where the 'paste' feature worked.  What I did was to paste the photo first to the desktop before transferring it to the new event/group.  I brought my Mac to the Apple store where I bought it and the technicians were themselves surprised that the 'paste' feature didn't work.  Chalked it up to glitches in the Lion os.  So how do we fix this?  I just find it absurd that a feature that used to work in Snow Leopard has been disabled in Lion, and the user still has to undergo an additional step to make it work, when new technology is supposed to make things easier for users.
Also, hasn't anyone noticed that it takes longer for the computer to boot upon opening?

Instead of copy and paste drag the photo to the new event. Or flag it and use the add flagged photos to selected event command

Alternatively, partition your internal HD and dual-boot it. Do note that you have to reboot to switch back and forth. You can't do it by logging out and back in.
