Google offering "opt out" of interest based ads

I assume everyone is aware of the option to opt out of the interest based ads in Google; but in case not, I found this article in the +NY Times+ interesting and useful.

Or save it for when you haven't got his attention!
Yes, but...if I haven't got his attention, then how do I get it?
I can't yet figure out how to contact you guys unless I find you answering one of my pesky questions and then I can change the subject and send you off to another of my issues.
I don't butt into someone else's thread to talk to you - unless in desparation.
That's one problem I've encountered, no private messaging here (or at least none for us lowly peons with fewer than 150 magic points...I am tantalizingly close, however )

  • Google Analytics OPT-OUT Browser Add-on 0.9.6 doesn't retain OPT-OUT settings...never did really. Also JAVA now refuses to create updates for WinXP/FireFox.

    I use PaleMoon now trying to get rid of advertising sharks. I have WINXP still - need assistive-technology computer for pain so taking time on getting new computer.
    I have been severely sabotaged by advertising conglomerates selling my private information. They have no right -yet they do whatever they want. Anyhow...I've tried to OPT-OUT of EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. I've tried 5 places found. Google, NAI, DAA, & FIREFOX HELP said go to about:config was instructed to turn "from false to true" the "privacy.tracking.protection.enabled" .But I couldn't keep this setting because this also has to be set to false to use any saved log-on's to my accounts., and add-on AD BLOCK PLUS 2.6.7 when I was on Firefox & had some ticks and now it is disabled because it won't work with PaleMoon 25.2.1
    This case is about GOOGLE OPT-OUT. Starting here: http://www.google.com/settings/ads?hl=en&sig=ACi0TCgWymel0CNWxdcnEWPzWNs9wDd7cVQHxHsmtz4w30CAyHk7MqyzzZdGh3m6FpDaJsKmunTLEvJZY5LAm3h6gIdzE30L-Q
    There are 2 columns. The left one "ADS ON GOOGLE" NEVER RETAINS AFTER LOG-OFF. The right column "Google ads across the web
    " seems to retain sometimes - if I remember right it falls off after a period of time as opposed to after just LOGGING-OFF. Below the columns there are options, but I don't have a GOOGLE ACCOUNT.
    Also down there is this link: https://support.google.com/adsense/troubleshooter/1631343?hl=en ...you see the box with this: Advertising industry program participation
    Google is a participating member of groups that have developed industry privacy standards like the Ad-Choices icon for online advertising.
    Group Location

    Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA) United States
    European Digital Advertising Alliance Europe
    Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada Canada
    ....I clicked OPTED OUT FOR NAI on their link http://www.networkadvertising.org/
    ...I clicked OPTED OUT FOR DAA on their link http://www.aboutads.info/
    ...I clicked PROTECT MY CHOICES and downloaded the app.
    These 1st 2 links used to have the same trouble and didn't retain ANYTHING and wouldn't re OPT-OUT ANY UNTIL THEY WERE SATIATED - saying I didn't have 3rd party cookies allowed when I did - this took hours.
    I sent numerous trouble reports to them that they ignored - then I think I sent one to Firefox and it is much better but still not completely right. Today DAA retains 106 out of 122 and if I repeatedly RE-OPT-OUT successively I can get it to 121 out of 122 - never completely. (currently the one not taking is Accuen Inc. but it changes periodically - makes me think they set one up to take my info and then share it with all of them - lol )
    Same for NAI currently I started with 94 out of 96 - next re-OPTED-OUT got it to 95 out of 96 and no further and same co. Accuen Inc (accuenmedia.com ) wouldn't update.
    NOTE: I was copy/pasting the list of NON-OPT-OUT'S to them and my own document file to try and find trends/problems...now NAI programmers protected the list from being able to be COPIED AND PASTED!!! That's the opposite of being open and interested in making this work, right? Why would they want to allow us to OPT-OUT of their criminal espionage behavior...RIGHT? (lol) FYI: I recorded that the big one that was always retained before this one was...MEDIA MATH INC.
    MANY Opt-outs would drop off while on-line and ALL would drop-off once logged-off. Now it's retaining most once logged off - but it hasn't been long enough to tell if they'll fall back into their bad habits as they've done before...
    This has been going on forever for me - I've been reporting this malfunction since 2013.
    Of course I downloaded PROTECT MY CHOICES FOR FIREFOX via NAI AND DAA'S links ...http://www.aboutads.info/PMC#protect-your-choices-for-firefox ............they both go to the same place???.....PROTECT MY CHOICES http://www.aboutads.info/plugin/install/firefox....that seems odd...it's as if they are the same entity then. ABOUTADS is DAA'S WEBSITE. NAI'S IS NETWORKADVERTISING.ORG so why would NAI use DAA'S PROTECT MY CHOICES app?
    Lastely, I also requested that the COOKIES NAMES BE UNIFORMLY IDENTIFIABLE. All the OPT-OUT COOKIES that are to be forevermore retained on my computer and that I am to trust the EVERY FUNCTION OF - well they all have different COOKIE NAMES!! Most of the names you can not tell that they are OPT-OUT COOKIES!! - SO NOWWW They have created another problem.
    We can no longer just "DELETE ALL COOKIES".
    PLUS, we can no longer go through our cookies and delete individual ones that snuck through.
    Every one of the OPT-OUT COOKIES SHOULD SAY "OPT-OUT" IWITHIN THEIR NAME OF THEIR COOKIE - PERIOD. RIGHT? (LOL) For real. Why was this mess was allowed?
    REALLY IN MY OPINION THESE COMPANIES SHOULD BE BLOCKED AT THE LOCAL PHONE COMPANIES LEVEL - IN OUR SERVERS. We should not have to deal with them. Same thing with viruses, malware and such beasts. But I digress.
    In summary:
    1.)Google Analytics OPT-OUT Browser Add-on 0.9.6 doesn't retain OPT-OUT settings
    2.) JAVA refuses to create updates for WinXP/FireFox/PaleMoon.
    3.) DAA & NAI still don't retain ALL OPT-OUT settings and never completely OPT-OUT all companies.
    4.) OPT-OUT cookies should be uniformly names with the words OPT-OUT in their titles.
    5.) Ad Block Plus 25.6.7 doesn't work for Pale Moon and there is no alternative - (didn't work great in FireFox)
    Right now I'm mainly interested in #1)retaining my GOOGLE OPT-OUTS while on line AND while logged off since it is attacking my computer and steeling all the speed until it freezes my keyboard.
    Currently I am trying to remember to run through 3. OPT-OUTS every time I log on.
    Thanks so much!

  • Google analytics opt-out?

    I installed the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on 0.9.1 for Safari a while back.
    Just now I visited a site (MobileIron) and a specific page there (white paper page) and then moved on to do other things. I did not order the white paper as they wanted to collect my personal data for that. Shortly thereafter, on a completely unrelated web search (KVM switches) I get a Google Ad directing me to this Mobile Iron White Paper page. I therefore suspect that the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on 0.9.1 for Safari does not do what i suspect it should do.
    Basically, I want to protect all my family members from all this personal data gathering by Google. What can I do while still having a function web (turning off cookies is not an option, I'm afraid). My cookies are already limited to sites I surf to.
    Looking at my cookies I see a lot of cookies and caches as in google-analytics.com, google.ca, google,com, google.nl, googleadservices.com, googleapis.com googlesyndication.com, googleusercontent.com
    What can I do to protect my privacy here? Should i use a different browser than Safari?

    Your Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on won't shield you from everything because Google Analytics is just one of approximately one (or two) gazillion data mining tracking "bugs" on the Internet.
    But if you're serious about privacy, don't get paranoid.  It's not that insidious.  As a general rule, people you don't know just want to sell you stuff you don't need.  So there's no need to become hypervigilant.  It's helpful to become informed about how companies are mining your data.  And that involves reading.
    Time magazine ran an in-depth article about data mining last year.  It's still online, so you can still read it at the Time website.  There is another useful article at Time about opting out.  Privacy Choice is another resource with tools that can be helpful.
    (Personally, I've opted out of as much as I can, and in addition, I use Ghostery, which catches a lot of potentially intrusive bugs before they meet my data.)
    Good luck.

  • I used the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on with the previous version of Firefox, but when I go the site, they say it is not compatible with my browser (sensing Firefox 6.0.2); while the description says it works with Firefox. ???

    I go to the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on Download site, and apparently it "reads" what browser I'm using (Firefox 6.0.2, and says the add-on is not compatible with my browser.
    Yet in the description box on the download site, it lists Firefox as being compatible.

    I don't see that addon on addons.mozilla.org -- are you downloading it from there, or somewhere else?

  • Problems with interest-based ads

    I use Firefox 9.0.1 and BT Yahoo mail. The ads in BT Yahoo are totally inappropriate for me and are driving me mad, but when I try to change them using Yahoo's interest-based ad chioces they say my browser does not support interest-based ad chioces. Is there anything I can do, apart from changing either Firefox or Yahoo?

    This just started today. I get the following interest based add that I can't get rid of. It says to click on the close box to stop the enhancements but they keep reappearing. And to make matters worse ads are now appearing on yahoo; I click on opt out but each time I relog on, the ads are there again and it shows that I never opted out. It's even worse with IE; the popup add below appears and I can't even opt out.
    I clicked on the so-called plugin removal tool but it's inactive. I ran norton power eraser and it's not showing up as malicious software.

  • How do I opt out of the annoying ads (flo singing) on the Apple TV radio?

    I like listening the Boccherini radio channel on Apple TV, lately it has been polluted with really irritating Progressive insurance (Flo singing) and other ads, about every 20 minutes, anyway to opt out of the ads?

    Wow, I hae been stewing over the same thing, but on my iphone. I don't know how anyone ever green light that ad.

  • IAd has an "Opt Out" clause :)

    For those of us that HATE ads, and were hesitating upgrading to iOS4 because of the iAd app/portion of the OS/whatever, I found out that there is indeed an Opt-Out clause to tell Apple to NOT send iAds to your iPhone
    You need to install iOS4, and then go to the following URL from within the iPhone browser;
    http://oo.apple.com
    You have to do it from each iPhone that's running iOS4, but it should opt you out of the program
    See why it's GOOD to read the EULA? this was hidden 3/4 of the way down in the EULA
    Message was edited by: MacTechG4

    Unfortunately, this does NOT opt out of iAds. It opts out of "Interest based" iAds which means only that the ads you see are not tailored to your interests and you may see the same ads over and over. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4228 for the details. Sounded too good to be true, eh?

  • Opting out of targeted ads on web pages

    I received an email today annoncing I will received targeted ads on web pages, and that I can go to the Verizon site to "opt out".  I can't find where to do this.
    Please note I am not asking how to opt out of emails from Verizon.
    If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.  I have no interest in being "targeted".  Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I received the same email and I am very distrubed.  The thing that bothers me even more than being targeted for ads is how Verizon is purposely making it difficult if not impossible to find the Opt Out Page.  As soon as you click on the link it SHOULD take you to the Opt Out Page.  It would be VERY EASY for Verizon to set it up this way.  But Verizon is requiring you sign in first - once signed in - it does not take you to the page - you have to search for it.  Their web site is NOT USER FRIENDLY!  I searched for the Opt Out Page, then searched for a way to email or chat with a rep at Verizon.  I couldn't find any of it.
    Shows a very big lack of integrity and customer service.  Will be looking for another carrier to do business with.

  • Adobe Acrobat updates - opt ins or opt outs for Google Chrome?

    Hi - anybody else fed up that when accepting one of the many Adobe Acrobat updates that the flag is set for also installing Google products? These should be set as opt ins, not as opt outs, and I find this intrusive. It's time wasting having to uninstall these products, and also fill in a lengthy questionnaire why you are uninstalling the product you never wanted to install in the first place!
    Rant over....

    I have never seen any Acrobat updates coming with bundled software; where do you get them from?
    Here is the last Acrobat update (Windows): http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5721

  • My automatic adobe flash player installer tried to install google chrome and did not allow opt out

    my automatic Adobe Flash Player updated tried to install Google Chrome without giving me the opporltunity to opt out?

    I witnessed this myself two nights ago while testing an upgrade in Windows 7.
    It HAS been reported to development, but... like 99% of the people here, we (myself and the MVP user who reported it) are just Adobe users like you, so reporting it with screenshots was the best we can do.
    I use Chrome myself, but only for testing webpages I build, and I've never used their toolbar, because it's an open portal for malware... hence the report filed with DEV.
    All we can do now is cross our fingers and hope they have it worked out by the next update cycle.

  • Why doesn't the customer support menu-driven system offer an "opt-out" option for cases where none of the available options meets the customer's need?

    I have called customer support several times to get problems with my service plan corrected. None of the menu-driven options meets my needs, but the system does not offer a way to connect to a live rep. The only way to get to a live rep is to hit the "invalid selection" O key several times. Good customer service would include an "opt-out" choice.

        I'm sorry to learn that our phone system does not include an option for your specific concerns Windy1040! I can address all Verizon Wireless issues! How can I help you?

    If you go back to the "7.0" directory and open the "Logs" folder, can you copy the "Audition Log.txt" file and send it as an attachment to [email protected]?  We'll take a look in that logfile and see if it gives us more information about why this is failing now.
    Also, do you have any other Adobe applications installed on this machine, such as Premiere Pro?  If so, do they launch as expected or fail as well?
    I do have the trial Pro version of Adobe reader, but I have not activated it, because I fear the same thing will happen did it. • 866-211-0874  Opt out of Business Marketing and Mobile Advertising

    866-211-0874  automated, don't have to talk to anyone.
    Supposedly the super-cookie opt out, but could also just be the same options as the verizon.com/myprivacy page as well.  Worth a shot though.  Obviously Verizon doesn't call it the supercookie opt-out.

    On a somewhat related topic, I too get very frequent mailings offering me FiOS promotions.  While the snail mail I get is in English, as an existing subscriber I'm not eligible for any of the promos they're touting.  All those ads do is rub in the fact that new subscribers get a much better deal than do existing customers.
    In the interest of saving mailing costs, as well as saving trees, you'd think that Verizon would find a way to integrate their existing customer data base with their advertising mailing list.
    I'm not holding my breath though, and, while I wish you luck, I suggest you don't hold yours either.

  • Why can I not use any map website because I am prompted to download Maps Galaxy for Firefox which I do not want & am provided no opt out option?

    I have attempted to use Google , MapQuest and Yahoo map and directions and cannot view the resulting directions because a message appears on the screen requiring me to download MapsGalaxy for Firefox toolbar. I am happy with what I can do currently with the map and direction web sites and do not care to download this toolbar but I am not even offered to opportunity to opt out. There is not even a description of the benefits offered if I would download the toolbar. I'm not one who enjoys being force fed things I did not request. What goes on and why am I being forced to download this toolbar in order to continue to use the map web sites? Thanks for your assistance.
    I have a screenshot of the message but am unable to figure out how to include it with this detailed description.

    Hi,
    Firstly I'd like to clarify myself: I'm not working for any hardware and software vendor. I've posted few times: they (all of them) don't sell printers, they sell inks because in many cases total cost of a new set of inks is more expensive than a new printer with inks (I know cartridges are not full). Since inks are very expensive, many people use chip resetters, continuous inks systems .... to reduce printing cost such as some thing like one of this.
    Regards.

  • Email preference centre - default opt-out

    Hi there,
    We built an email preference centre with corresponding landing page in Eloqua and are good to go for a trial to assess the impact on our global unsubscribe rate. One thing remains however. We cannot seem to find how to make the tick boxes on the landing pages ticked by default, i.e. to let people opt out instead of opt in. Where can we enable this? Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Kristoff

    We did the same thing in our instance of Eloqua.  We are using a beta version where email address is not the unique identifier.  We use SFDC Contact ID as our unique identifier as we have multiple contacts who use the same email address.
    We created custom subscription pages for each of our lines of business (aka Eloqua form on an Eloqua landing page). On our landing pages, we had check boxes that they could check to opt out of receiving a specific newsletter or type of campaign such as promotional communications or tradeshows, etc....
    The first step was to create a field for each of those options in the database and we sent the field to be automatically checked when a new contact was added.  We had to do an initial download though of all the contacts, added those fields to the spreadsheet and then populated them with a "1" to make the box checked on the subscription page.  We also offered an option to check a box to remove them from all future marketing communications which would automatically uncheck all the other boxes on the form and subsequently turn those values to "0". Then we use filters to make sure we don't send to anyone who has a value of "1" in the field if they have opted out of receiving any communications.
    In order to make it work though, we had to add JavaScript to each of the landing pages to check and uncheck boxes based on what they chose.  Here is the code for one of my pages:
    <script type="text/javascript">
        var _elqQ = _elqQ || [];
        _elqQ.push(['elqSetSiteId', '1499497143']);
    _elqQ.push(['elqTrackPageView']);
        (function () {
            function async_load() {
                var s = document.createElement('script'); s.type = 'text/javascript'; s.async = true;
                s.src = '//img03.en25.com/i/elqCfg.min.js';
                var x = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; x.parentNode.insertBefore(s, x);
            if (window.addEventListener) window.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', async_load, false);
            else if (window.attachEvent) window.attachEvent('onload', async_load);
    </script><script type='text/javascript' language='JavaScript'>
