GPS in-Car Navigation

Hi
Does anyone know of an in-Car GPS system that is compatible with a MacBook Pro Version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. (IE: Navman is not compatible). Thanks in advance Don.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
IF you have Boot Camp and Windows already installed, Delorme (www.delorme.com) has Street Atlas 2011.
They sell a version with a USB GPS sensor (LT-40), and one with a Bluetooth (BT-20) GPS sensor. I've used the USB sensor with Street Atlas 2009 and 2010, and it works well. (I've also used them successfully under Parallels 4, 5, and 6, but you still need Windows.)

  • Nokia 5800 Car Navigation

I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic with Ovi maps installed in it. It used to work well with street by street voice navigation until recently I checked for an update and downloaded the latest one. Now that I'm trying to use car navigation again it says, "Car navigation cannot start at this location." I tried deleting Cities folder in E: memory card and reinstalled maps and voice guidance but it is still the same. What should I do?

I got the same problem Here. I am from Poland.
Two days ago I became an owner of Nokia 500 and I started playing with it. So I updated Nokia Suite to latest version (via updates), updated firmware to latest and installed latest maps.
Then, when I wanted to start navigating, the app says "you cannot start navigation from this location" (or sth similiar).
I tried deleting cities and qf - no success. I use integrated gps-positioning only.
Now, the funny thing - I also have Nokia 5230. It's with latest updates (also considering maps). Navigation in it worked like charm, but I thought that the maps I downloaded for 500 were messed up, so I uninstalled maps from 5230, cleared cities and qf and installed maps again. AND NOW I HAVE NO WORKING NAVIGATION in any phone
Except the "navigation cannot start..." there's also problem that I can set the route from point a to point b on the map anymore.
Tomorrow I will really, really need that Nav.
    Please help.

  • IPod integration with car navigation systems?

I recently bought a Honda CR-V with a touch screen navigation system (with XM radio). Honda offers a iPod "music link" install, but supposedly it only allows shuffle song play or shuffle album play.
It would seem a no brainer that they could write an iTunes interface-type program so you could use menus on the touch screen navigation system to control your iPod.
Has anyone heard of this for any car navigation system? It would seem highly apealing to have this option, and it doesn't seem like there are many technological hurdles - it's just a "front row" application for your car's navigation screen (easily said than done, but doesn't seem too tough).

Does your kit connect via the dock port? If so, it should work, I don't think the dock ports were changed.

  • Nokia N95 GPS - 616 Car Kits

When i use the GPS on my N95 - if it connnectd to the car kit the voice navigation does not come on - i have to diconnect from the kit to use GPS properly. If i use the remote sim option it mute the radio at all times until i close the nagivation application. Any suggestions

Looks to be a problem with a lot of car kits... many don't do the bluetooth audio thing - tho they do phone calls fine (different profiles I guess...)
So when you pair the phone to the car you loose the Nav voice because the phone is trying to pass all things audio over the bluetooth link - even if the car doesn't know what to do with it..
Leaving you in the position where calls work fine but voice nav is lost...
It'd be nice if we could leave the nav using the phone speakers and the calls using the bluetooth car kit... it might be a bit of a compromise but at least it would keep us legal whilst driving and still allow the use of the maps.. after all where better to use a nav app than in a car???
Pity Nokia seemed to have missed this one....

  • Exporting MP3's for use in car Navigation Systems

I am trying to load, SD memory cards (2g) for my Audi's navigation system, I have followed some disucssions on here—about using iTunesMyWalkman, to convert files. I have loaded a SD card, and played it in my car, well my question, is there anyway to see all the artists that are in this playlist? I lets me play through selections—or skip through, to get to next artist or albums. Is there a way to see all the artists that are in playlist, then be able to scroll down and play that artist?
    John

Car audio players are not standardized, especially where you are asking how to use this specific feature which is probably unique to your player.  You should look in  the owner's manual and see how they say to do it.  If there's something you don't understand you can post the information here and we can help interpret.
One thing for sure, you don't need any third party software to convert to mp3 for your car.

  • 330 Car Navigation & GNS FM9 TMC adapter subscript...

    "Traffic information
    The Nokia 330 Auto Navigation supports an external TMC (Traffic Message Channel) module to receive latest information on traffic jams on the road. As special TMC module is available and can be purchased with a discount from www.gns-gmbh.com/nokia/.";
So far the official webpage of europe.nokia.com.
When entering the gns-gmbh page there is an offer for Europe to buy that adapter for 24,90€.
But you need special voucher code from your seller, regular price of adapter is around 50€. This voucher my seller missed to hand over not only to me,also to a lot of other customer.
No problem I thought, give GNS a call. To get this special code for purchasing the adapter, GNS gave information to call the german hotline or go to the seller.
It was easier for me to contact the hotline, but even they have been very honest, they have not been aware about the special offer made officially by Nokia !!!
One of the hotlines arguments was that it would depend on the seller to get this voucher code !! How that can be ?
You're selling an TMC-adaptable unit w/o possibility to get the needed adapter ? They even did not announce this adapter as an official accessory ? Why the hell not ?
But they promised me to address this issue to management. Let's wait

  • Navigation by foot or car, whats the difference?

it seems to me, the only difference is no voice guidance when by foot is selected?
i tried out the free 3 day trial the other day and i was impressed with the guidance by car but on foot seemed a little disappointing, the first problem is, there doesn't seem to be any footpaths or cycle ways on the map? i set a route from my home to tescos (about a mile trip using a cycle path/footpath) but the guidance kept me on the roads which is over a 2 mile trip. as i was on my bike, the N95 was out of my sight so i had the headphones on to hear the directions, but i didn't get any, u have to set the route by car for me to hear anything?
so whats the point of the two options? there's always the volume control if you don't want to hear the voice?
    Nexu 5

I bought Nokia's navigation solution for my N95. I have the same SOFTWARE BUG as the user in the link further down (please look for the part about "the application constantly switches back to car navigation".) That's exactly my problem. When I try to plan a route having set "by foot", the application switches "behind my back" to "by car". This results in a ridiculous route for a pedestrian or, if I am on a non-car path, hanging endlessly in "calculating a route". I have a dvd-navigation system in my car. I bought the Nokia navigation software for walking purposes. Until this bug is fixed, it's a waste of money for me.

    Navigation vs. ‘Free’ Walking
For street navigation on foot two application modes can be used. If you’ve paid for navigation you can use the on-foot navigation option to plot a course from the current GPS position to the selected place. While this works great for car navigation I found it quite awkward to use for street navigation on foot. When walking into the wrong direction for example, the application re-calculates the route instead of just asking the user to turn around. Also, the application constantly switches back to car navigation for which routing rules are quite different. For the moment, I therefore prefer the standard mode as shown in the image on the left in which the user saves a destination as a landmark which is then displayed on the main map. The current GPS position is shown as a cross and the location is updated as the user walks down the street. As destinations are usually in walking distance (less than 2 km for most occasions I would say) it’s easy to zoom in and out at the beginning to find the right direction and keep the zoom level low for the final turns. In practice this mode worked well for me and on top is even free of charge.

  • Can someone explain the GPS functionality?

Just got a new 3G and I'm a little unclear about how the GPS feature works. I actually have two questions:
    1) When I'm viewing my current location on a map (the blue orb) I noticed that some times the blue orb stays centered on the screen as I move and other times I'm able to move off the screen and I have to manually scroll to find myself. I'm not sure what determines the behavior. Obviously I'm doing something different, but I don't know what.
    2) This is related to the first question. How is the "turn-by-turn" feature intended to work? When I pass a turn and click the button to go to the next turn I lose my current location and have to zoom out or scroll to find myself. It can't be very safe to have to do this for each leg of the trip while driving. Am I approaching this feature with the wrong expectations? If my current location would just stay centered and the steps advanced automatically as I hit them it would be perfect, but it doesn't appear to do that.
    Thanks!

I haven't experienced this myself so I'm not sure the cause.

The GPS on the iPhone is not meant to be used as a car navigation system as it does not do audible turn by turn directions at this time.

  • FM transmitter blocks GPS?

    Hi
I recently bought an FM transmitter/charger for my 3GS. Works fine in car until I try to use GPS for my navigation app. GPS will not fix location until FM transmitter is unplugged (which means the charger has to be unplugged as well.
Does the use of an FM transmitter always block the iPhone's GPS capability, or is it just the particular version I have bought (it's one of those that plugs directly into the foot of the iPhone, charges through a mini-USB socket)? If anyone out there is successfully using an FM tramsmitter with iPhone charger and GPS simultaneously in-car, what kit are you using?
    Thanks

I've had similar issues with my Flexpod Car Mount unit, though not as severe as you describe. I just tend to get frequent hiccups in signal, but it usually catches up to itself. I think it's an inherent issue with transmitters and the FM range interfering with location services.

  • E90 - Built in GPS receiver availability for other...

As per title, I would like to know if someone has tried to use other navigation apps (like TomTom 6 or Route66 7) in the E90, using only the internal GPS receiver, in lieu of the default Nokia application.
I had a TomTom 5 in my previous 9300 paired with BT GPS SirfIII receiver.
Now, I own a Garmin Nuvi 360 for normal car navigation so I really do not need a professional navigation software in the E90 but only need a handy back up solution.

It also seems there is the possibility to store maps in the SD avoiding gprs traffic.

  • GPS apps on Verizon iPhone 4

I'm thinking of ditching my Droid for a Verizon iPhone. The only thing holding me back is the lack of a voice activated/voice directions GPS. Does anyone have any experience with any of the gps apps that are available for the iPhone 4?

There are many, many iPhone Nav app reviews on the internet.  You'll find more thorough info much faster there.
Personally, for car navigation, I much prefer a dedicated nav device, i.e. Garmin Nuvi.  The UI is not quite as good but they do one thing and do it very, very well.  It just seems to be more of a hassle on the iPhone when I (or someone else) may want to use it for something else other than navigation, i.e. finding a restaurant, phone calls, texting, news, email, books, etc.

  • Gps keeps cutting out on N97

I have just used navigation for the second time on the N97 and the gps signal keeps cutting out making it impossible to use voice guided navigation.
Tried it next to my old Navigator which worked fine once it picked up the signal which makes me think it's something to do with the hardware not the weather conditions.
The signal cuts out every 20 seconds or so intermittently and often can't pick it up again.
    Can anybody help?

To be honest I don´t think there´s anything you or we can do to sort this out, since it is pretty probable that it is a hardware problem.
Help should be provided by a Nokia Care Point to fix your GPS problem
Care points/service centers and repair info:

  • Any GPS/NAVI apps with video out feature??

Are there any GPS navigation apps out there for the iPhone that will work with the video out? My car stereo has an audio/video input, I have the a/v connector and I'd love to run a GPS app for navigation and display the NAVI video and audio on my head units audio input. I know that some dont support the video output feature, know of any that do?

I just tested it on my Nokia N8 (Running Symbian Anna ) and Nokia Beta Labs latest version of the Camera application.
I have set so capturing geolocation information is saved for video.
I Record a video and as you say if you playback the video right away Choose Options -> Details  I get the GPS location shown.
I  then go to Meny -> Photos
Choose the Check button (bottom left)
Then select the Video, then go to Options -> Details
I also get the GPS coords under Location here.
This location data is not shown if you show details under Meny -> Videos though..

  • Using Bluetooth GPS

I am trying to get a Delorme BT-20 GPS unit to work with Street Atlas 2007 on my MBP.
I realize that Delorme doens't officially support Mac computers, but I also know that many experienced Mac users have gotten certain things to work.
I am trying to get my BT-20 to work on my MacBook Pro with VMWare Fusion and SA 2007.
The MBP recognises the BT-20 and will pair with it. But under bluetooth preferences, it shows up as:
    type Unknown
    Services None
    Paired Yes
    Connected No
I assume my inability to get SA 2007 to see the GPS starts in the bluetooth preferences. Does anybody know how to fix this?
I have tried plugging in the BT-20 with USB, but that doesn't work either.
    Thanks,
    Kirk

    Thanks, Rich
Of course a dedicated satnav device will be better, but I am trying to compare N-series phones versus Windows Mobile handhelds, which are also widely used for in-car usage instead of a dedicated satnav device.
Some of my colleagues use a Windows Mobile handheld phone a 400+ processor and they are quite happy with in-car navigation with voice hinting.
Now I think, should I also purchase a Windows Mobile phone with GPS onboard (and I am quite sure that GPS functionality will satisfy me).
The opposite variant is to buy an N-series phone like N73, which I like very much (and I am sure about its phone functionality).
May I ask you what kind of disadvantages you faced using N73+GPS in car for navigation with voice hints? Was the map rendered too slow with big delays? What exactly was wrong?
    Many thanks,
    Alexey
