Graphic Artifacts and display freezing/blacking

My 15inch MBP, purchased in July of 06, seems to be giving me major problems.
I'm getting really odd graphics artifacts all the time. It can be as simple as a multicolor line in a window, on the desktop or through an icon. Othertimes its as major as an icon or section of a graphic showing up like its been scrambled and combined with really bright colors. Sometimes it looks like a triangle of a few pixels that have been stretched out.
All of the issues are related to software, as I can make them go away by changing window size—and they only exist in the window or application. The heat coorelates to how severe the artifacts can get, if I'm about 60˚C I'll notice them more, so as a photographer I keep my fan running when I'm doing important work to avoid the crashes.
And finally, the computer will crash with little explanation. Not like things timing out and I look mouse function, but things like the entire screen slowly being tinted green, or everything but the mouse seizes up(when this happens, my caps lock button still works, I can move the mouse just fine, but I can't click anything;commands don't work either.) The crashing can happen when I'm working in Photoshop(comp intensive) or if I only have Mail.app open and I happen to click on the finder icon too fast(very simple tasks).
I have the funds to get this repaired, although I'm confident they will simply replace the logic board and that will not solve my issue—only temporarily put it off another few months.
I'm waiting for the 10.5.2 update, hoping that will fix something. I have all other updates.
Any suggestions?

One thing to try would be to borrow an external display and see if the same artifacts occur on the external display. If so, you might have a graphics chip problem, either with the chip itself or with its attachment to the logic board. If the problem gets worse with heat, it may be that the ball grid array that holds the chip to the logic board is beginning to fail. It sounds like your software requires intense processor usage, which will generate more heat. As the heat builds, the failing ball grid array will work less well and you will get these visual artifacts and freezing and other symptoms.
You might try one of the laptop coolers with fans to keep your Mac as cool as possible and see if this helps. The other thing to try is to reinstall the OS and see if that helps. If reinstalling the OS does not help, very likely you are dealing with some sort of hardware issue, and very likely they would want to replace the logic board.
Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it happens to show anything?
Good luck!

With two upcoming trips, all part of chasing my dreams to become an awesomely famous screenwriter and game designer, instead of just an aspiring wannabe, I cannot afford to do what I think will solve the problem, and that's purchasing a new graphics card.
Given my foolishness in not making regular Time Machine backups, reinstalling the OS is going to be a last resort. As in I'm not trying that until I've exhausted all other options (which, as taught in college and in the four years of my life I wasted as an IT guy for an ISP, is not what you should try first anyway). I'll exorcise the HDD and plug it into something else before I reinstall the OS.
Given the above two points: what's my next step? Is there something I can try before either purchasing a new graphics card or reinstalling the OS?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Apple firmware (or flashed card).
The ATI line of Apple cards use universal EFI (EBC) so even the new 5770/5870s work as well.
Check the test results coming out on
    http://www.barefeats.com comparing cards.
I realize the hard restart may be 'necessary' but booting from DVD or running the single user mode command FSCK -fy can minimize directory repair problem if you don't have OS X on another drive.
Installing OS X is fast and easy if you can shrink 30GB off another drive that you would then be able to boot from and has just mini OS and utilities.
Cache files often are the first to become corrupt as well, or prefs, anything that was in memory and that are changed frequently and after a startup. Cache files are automatically rebuilt and no fear if you can delete those.
AppleJack and Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner can 'enhance' what diskutil fsck you can do and add some more commands.
8800GTs are harder to find, still on ebay at times.

  • Upgrading Graphics Card and Display

Hello, i'm an architect and would like to upgrade my graphics card. Currently i have a GeForce2 TwinView. I'm thinking about ATI Radeaon 9800 or the 9200. Anythoughts? Would i see big difference in my 3d work.
    Thanks

    Hi-
Yes, you can use a 9800. The 9800 is the top of available upgrades for the G4.
Look on eBay for a used Mac version, or a flashed PC version 9800. It's a great alternative to waiting indefinitely for a Mac version about $100 more.

  • Logic graphics screwy and software freezes

When opening any internal logic windows graphics are dark colors and font and selection buttons cannot be seen or read. Also can't save, logic stops responding. Last, if I launch logic and then try and open a recent song it hangs again.
    Please help - Production down...

Sounds like something has gone tits up - check your hard drive for corruption, check you have an up-to-date Apple ProAppSupport update, and if none of that helps, try reinstalling Logic.

I'm an very very casual gamer, i play games once or twice a week; in the last period i didn't played games for one month; i've used my pc for mail, office, watching movies, messenger, facebook, web browsing, hdd data recovery, programming php. Before upgrading to 970A-G43, i had the same configuration - except MB and RAM (i used for 4 years K9A2GM V3 with 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 KingMax and the actually N650-1GD5/OCV1; played games with no problems).
After the upgrade, i installed OS Windows XP SP3 with clean install, AHCI Mode, latest drivers - no problems 'till there. I have installed latest version of DirectX 9.0c and some games: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. All with same problem: pc freezes with artifacts and then freeze - sometimes after 3-4 minutes of playing, othertimes after 10-15 minutes.
I've checked the RAM with MemTest86 for one night, no errors. I've checked the CPU and GPU Temperature, all stable (CPU around 40, GPU around 70 under full load). I've stressed up the system with Prime95 and Furmark latest version running at the same time - all stable (Tested for 30 minutes, CPU around 43 C, GPU around 85 C - no freeze, no crash).I installed 3D Mark 06, i ran it and it freezes in-time of first test or after it.
VGA driver was 320.49 WHQL initially, downloaded from nvidia website. I uninstalled it, cleaned my OS with Driver Sweeper, installed latest version from MSI Website (MSI Graphics Driver 306.81 ). Both drivers, same problems.
I'm pretty sure that there is no problem with PSU or MB's VRM (VRM supports 125W TDP, CPU is running 65W. My old boad K9A2GM V3 has only 65W and there were no problem). If there were problems, the system would crash in prime 95 and furmark running at the same time, i think.
I didn't tested yet my VGA on other PC, neither another VGA in my PC.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.
P.S.: In BIOS, all is set on AUTO - except DDR Speed - Manually set to 1333 MHZ with auto timings.
C1E Enabled, Cool and Quiet Activated, EUP 2013 Enabled.
I have flashed MB to latest BIOS, v10.3; same problem
    Any suggestion is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards!

VGA Card is dead. Probably at least one memory chip died or has errors on it.  Testet on another PC and results are same, in 3D Mark and Crysis 3 too.
I sent the card to warranty services.
    Problem is solved.

  • Satellite L405D-11V - Freezes and screen goes black when watching video

Ok, so I have the Toshiba Satellite L405D-11V, I have had a fault, basically, the computer would freeze at any time and the screen would go black, with the fan and lights still going, this could be on start-up, or a few hours into using the laptop, so I decided to ring up Toshiba's tech support and they arranged for my laptop to be collected and sent off for repairs.
I was able to track the repairs online through the tracking service, and was able to see what they were doing to my laptop, it said that they ordered a part, it was in progress and the repairs were finished.
However, I got the laptop back today, I turn it on, everything is fine, I start using the laptop everything is fine, then I decide to watch a video on youtube, and it freezes again, so, I power off holding down the power button, hoping it was just a one off, I turn it back on, and load up the video again, it freezes and the screen goes black again, after working out that when ever I watch a video or play a game, it causes the computer to crash and freeze like before the repairs. So there is still a fault, but im not sure what to do
Its still under warranty, I purchased the laptop from Comet, but I dont really want to send the laptop off for repairs again and to find it will come back with the same fault, is it worth sending it off again, perhaps seeing if comet will replace the laptop as its still under a year of buying the laptop, or is it just gonna be worth saving all the hassle and buying a new laptop? If this fault has happened to anyone else, I could sure use some help, and if someone could shed a little light as to what might be wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi buddy,
Did you change something on configuration after you got your notebook back from repair? Did you update a driver or something else?
What operating system you are using on your Satellite L405D?
To be honest its really hard to say why it happens because the technicians test everything to check if your notebook runs properly.
In my opinion you should try updating the display driver. Maybe its causing the issue
If not I would recommend installing Windows from Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings. These settings are pretested by Toshiba and should work.
If you still have the problem you must contact the technicians again. I mean you could track the repair online and according your posting everything worked well during repair so in my opinion it shouldnt be a problem to contact the guys exactly.
Explain your problem very detailed. I think everything can be clarified then. :)

  • 23" cinema Display flickers and goes to black

    Hey all,
I am running two 23" cinema displays and one of them is flickering and going to black. Here is a video of it.
    http://larskoerkemeier.com/MVI_0972.MOV
The curved bands arent there thats just from the filming but what happens is the entire image shifts up very quickly and what you see flash on the bottom is actually the top. It repeats this a couple times and then turns off and then it repeats and after a couple times the display just stays off.
    System:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 6 GB
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    Thanks,
    -Lars

    Hi-
Try switching the power adapters to see if the problem moves to the other display.
Of course, reconnecting/double checking all connections is a good idea.
Other than that, any references in Console/Logs regarding graphics driver errors?

  • Graphic glitch and freezing.

I had a graphic problem with my iMac 3 weeks ago, had to take it to an Apple repairer 3 hours away, there just isn't anyone closer, and have had it back for about 6 hours now. I got the Snow Leopard upgrade while it was away and have been looking forward to getting into it all. As soon as I got my iMac home I fired it up and straight away noticed a graphic glitch or something odd on my 2nd monitor, kinda looked like aliens from space invaders... This problem went away if I changed that monitors resolution or if I rotated the display, so I thought it might be a driver problem which should hopefully be fixed by upgrading to SL.
I attempted this upgrade, it seemed to go fine but when I finally got into SL I noticed that once again there were some space invader glitches, but instead of being huge and all the way across the 2nd monitor they were in 2 separate blocks 1 in the top left and one just slightly to the right from center at the very top, they were flashing green from time to time (just like before) but that was about all. After a few seconds all the icons on my desktop and also the dock icons screwed up, display as black and white lines, or weird colored blocks, or super pixelated and just pretty screwy.
I formatted from fresh doing Leopard (without updating fully to 10.5.8) then installing SL, same problem, I then tried installing just SL which worked as usual but still had the graphic glitches when hovering over or interacting this time, also there were some problems with the glitches showing over windows (I'll put a link to a screenshot of them at the end). I'm currently updating a fresh install of Leopard to 10.5.8 to then update to SL to see if that works.
I had a thought that it might be hardware, the logic board and graphics card were both replaced during the repair time, they said they tested it but on the repair form I got it just says 'restarted a few times with no problems' so I'm not sure if they even tested it very much.
It took almost 3 weeks to get my mac back today, and these problems are quite annoying, if I have to lose it for another 3 weeks because of this lack of testing I'm gonna be rather annoyed as I'm losing work because of it.
Anyone got ideas of what it might be? or just anyone else had this problem with SL or just Leopard? Any information would be great.
Screenshot of glitch while doing a google search:
    http://www.xager.net/i/glitch.jpg

My old first gen macbook pro had a similar problem (under Tiger and Leopard), it was fixed. My current unibody macbook pro is doing this as well, I've only noticed it now under Snow Leopard.
I doubt it's a software problem, I've had similar issues in PCs when their video cards were running too hot. My current mbp gets these glitches when the system is under more load and so I'm sure its heat related. One time the heat and glitches got so bad the system just locked up.
I hope you can get your system repaired. I am going to now go ahead and try my luck with apple support as well.

  • Freezing and display issue

    Dear All,
I had this imac from 2010. Now it's creating some issues. Daily when i start this Imac, its freeze on gray screen and its also show scrambled display. But after 5 or 6 time immediate power down and on. I am able to use the operating system. It’s a very strange problem after getting heat or something it able for use. I also reset the smc and Pram reset. I don’t think its  operating system problem. Kindly suggest solution which work

This sounds possibly graphics related and sounds as though you are experiencing kernel panics.
Please post a copy of your latest kernel panic in your reply. To find the log, open Console application and look under System Diagnostic Reports. The log will start with "kernel_" and end in ".panic". Post the whole panic report in your reply.

When i disconnect my iPod 2nd Gen from my laptop, its display goes off and working freezes. Please help me.

The computer freezes?  There may be something wrong with the USB port.  If the laptop has more than one port, does this happen on any port?  If you are disconnecting the shuffle cable from the computer, does it make any difference if you disconnect the shuffle at the other end of the cable first, then disconnect the cable from computer?  Or if you currently disconnect the shuffle from cable first, try it the other way.
You may be able to work around this problem, if you get a self-powered USB hub.  Something like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/USB2HB7PRO/
There are many choices, but be sure to get one that has its own power supply.  You can leave the shuffle cable connected to the hub, and connect the shuffle to the hub, instead of directly to the computer.  This may provide a "buffer" for whatever is causing your laptop to shut off when the shuffle is disconnected.  Since the hub has its own power supply, it will not rely on the computer for power to re-charge the battery.

I have reached out  to this community as my Iphone display gone black and got the solution to keep home and power button pressed. It worked but I would like to know
    1. Why it went black and is there a permanent fix for this
2.Will the IOS gets automatically updated as I feel the IOS was 5 when I got the phone in 2012 december
    3.Do you suggest 7.1 for Iphone 4

    1. There is no way of knowing. These things happen.
    2. The iOS only gets updated when you want it to be.
    3. You should always update to the latest iOS your phone will support. Apple do not write the updates to make your experience worse.

  • Graphical artifacts with DX11 (and OGL4) on imac 27" late 2012 GTX 675 MX

Hello, dear community! I have the imac 27" late 2012 with graphical card GTX 675 MX.
In Mac OS X 10.8.5 all works perfect. Software, games (Bioshock Infinity), benchmarks (heaven 4.0). But in windows...
I was installed Windows 8, then 7, then 8 again, and every time after installing nvidia drivers (with BootCamp, or manually downloaded from nvidia site) i have some graphical artifacts ("||" randomly on the screen). On win 7 it was only in games (like Bioshock Infinity or Tomb Raider), on win 8.1 everywhere(on desktop and in games). In DX9 games (like World Of Tanks) all perfect, in DX10/11 games (BI or TR) - artifacts. After thousend of tests i run Heaven Unigine 4.0 with OpenGL(other settings the same) in macos and in windows(on 7 and on 8), for checking some hardware issue if it exists. But on mac os x, as i already said, all is perfect, but on windows - randomly appers artifacts.
I record a video to illustrate my problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwEog66vfFk&feature=youtu.be
Help me please! People in service told me that this is not a guarantee issue

I assume you have GPU-Z and other tools to look at gpu. the imac falls between notebooks and desktops when it comes to graphics. and it may be some programs just are not written for that graphic device? possibly?
I've been on Windows 8.1 mostly along with 8.0 and graphic drivers have been "bumpy road" at times and I was able to swap out and use different graphic cards on my PC - had me thinking I had an SSD related issue, then replaced memory (those were bad it turned out, and could have caused drivers and system errors).
Windows has memtest on the DVD and I have seen one or three people with real problems that did not show up until they did more tests, even though Mac OS was blindly oblivious to anything being wrong (it was, they upgraded RAM and SO-DIMM was not fully seated in one case, in another the RAM module had to be replaced).
Extended Tests using Apple Hardware Test is not conclusve and almost never ever when comes to finding gpu or memory 'errors.' There you are better with Windows test utility.

  • When receiving email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header. Adds popstate folder to account.

I'm running Thunderbird 31.6.0 on Windows 8.1 with BitDefender 2013.
    PROBLEM:
When getting email, Thunderbird freezes and displays "Not Responding" in screen header.
When TB is closed then reopened, a popstate folder (popstate-1.dat) is added to account. A new popstate folder appears with each crash/freeze, and as long as they are not deleted, they pile up with unique numbers (popstate-1.dat, popstate-2.dat, etc.).
    (see attached screenshot)
NOTE: I've included troubleshooting details below for all the fixes I tried, thinking it might be helpful to anyone who has a similar problem and is thinking about going down those paths. Ultimately, it seems that FIX ATTEMPT 5 is the winner.
    ==================================
    FIX ATTEMPT 1:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1026288, I restarted Thunderbird in Safe Mode (Help > Restart with Add-Ons disabled...), checking the "Disable all add-ons" and "Reset toolbars and controls" and clicking "Make Changes and Restart" button.
In Add-Ons Manager, BitDefender Toolbar now appears to be disabled.
    (see attached screenshot)
    But the problem persists.
    FIX ATTEMPT 2:
Following the suggestion in this archived mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1016811, I clicked Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder button. This opens a File Explorer window for 3I58b9dq.default (this is the "profile" folder) which contains panacea.dat and folderTree.json files.
I changed file names to panacea-changed.dat and folderTree-changed.json (rather than deleting them, in case I need to restore them), and I reopened Thunderbird.
This did not solve the problem -- and, furthermore, the profile folder seems to have automatically generated new panacea.dat and folderTree.json files to replace those for which I changed the filenames.
    FIX ATTEMPT 3:
Following the suggestion in this mozilla support post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774, I restarted Windows 8.1 in safe mode with networking enabled (using these instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/.)
TB does not crash when Windows runs in safe mode, but the aspect ratio of my display is distorted; everything's really big and stretched horizontally, and my two displays are mirrored rather than extended. Running Windows perpetually in safe mode is not the ideal fix.
QUESTION 1: I understand that troubleshooting is supposedly done best in safe mode — What might I do in safe mode to diagnose the Thunderbird problem?
    FIX ATTEMPT 4:
This article https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#Symptoms, suggests that problems with Thunderbird associated with BitDefender can be solved by uninstalling and re-installing BitDefender.
Not really comfortable uninstalling and re-installing, I disabled Bitdefender (Settings button > Antivirus button > Shield tab > On-Access Scanning toggle Off) to see if that would work. It did not fix the problem.
QUESTION 2: Would uninstalling BitDefender be any different than disabling it?
    FIX ATTEMPT 5:
Create a Bitdefender Exclusion for the Thunderbird folder:
Settings button > Antivirus button > Exclusions tab > Excluded files and folders link > Add button > navigate to Thunderbird folder (c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\thunderbird) > Both radio button > Add button > OK button
THIS FIX DID THE TRICK! YAY!

FIX ATTEMPT #5 above did the trick, and now I see that it was the chosen solution for a similar post of the same problem at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1044774
