Graphic Designer needs help.

Good evening.
     Not sure where to post this but I'm a Graphic Designer and I'm wanting to design and make those cool vinyl designs that people put on there Apple products. Does anyone know or know where I can get the measurements for all the Apple laptop and iPad models? Mainly the area where the Apple logo is. MacBook Pro 13,15in, Apple air and iPad. And even the size of the Apple logo itself. Is it the same size on all devices? I tried looking online but couldn't find anything off the bat. Hopefully the good people on the forum might know more about this. Thank you.

The PDF below shows iPad dimensions, but the file is 10.8 MB so may take some time to load:

  • How much ram and processing power in my imac will meet my graphic design needs?

    Hi,
    I'm in the market for a new imac. I'm trying to figure out how much ram I'll need and which processor will be sufficient for my graphic design needs.
    I'm gonna need it to be robust enough to have InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator open at once along with spotify, safari with many tabs open, and a couple other apps including evernote and game from time to time. Also, I'm gonna be managing a good deal of fonts in font explorer. How much ram and processing power will I need in my imac to keep everything snappy with all these apps going at the same time?
    Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Feel free to include any other relevant information you think I should know.
    Thanks, Nick

    Computers are out of date when you open the box
    Ok, getting serious, that iMac should be a viable workhorse for what you want for a good five years, and taht depends on how much ram you put in it, add really fast external storage, and so on.
    Didn't throw this in earlier so as to not influence the discussion: my daughter is the senior art director, VP, at a graphics design firm in NYC.  Has been in the business for a number of years.  When she changed out her Mac at work, bought, or company bought, the 27" iMac model just before the latest, with maxed out CPU/GPU, and storage.  They maxed the memory to 32 GB for her, then added a 30" Apple cinema display so she has almost 5' of display in front of her.  There is nothing she cannot have open all spread across that display area.  She works almost exclusively in print media, occassionally condescends to do web stuff.  And has a massive array of RAID drives hanging on it.  But that is a setup an individual would be hard pressed to go with.
    At home she uses a MacBook Pro with top cpu and display but that is all.
    The point, just how massive do you want to go depends on how fast you have to work; in the office where time is money you need tons of horsepower.  At home, you scale it to your abilitty to juggle other tasks at the same time.
    I think your choices have been great, the discussion has focused on what is important and especially what can and cannot be changed in the future.
    Best of luck setting this up.

  • SUGGESTIONS NEEDED: Graphic Designer needing to organize my graphic library

    Ive been wanting to find a better way of organizing my extensive library of the following (Vector & Raster art): Backgrounds, Raster/Vector Patterns, Logos, Icons, Vector Design Elements, Fonts (I use FontBook), print & web templates, Stock Photos, ALOT of vector art, anything from flourishes to multi colored complex images, Web Design stuff (icons, buttons, banners...etc.) and last but not least Adobe CS native color swatches, patterns, gradients, actions, and brushes.  I am sure I left out some, but you get the idea.
    I have been building my large collection over the period of 4-5 years and has grown to 40g of internal HD space to house these in loosely catergorized subfolder (i.e., Vector Art, Stock Photos, PS plugins (gradients, brushes, ETC) backgrounds/Textures, so on and so forth.  I would love to store my Data externally but with the throughput speeds of USB, am not wanting to slow down Bridge anymore than it already is. But help with external storage and accessing files quickly would also help
    As your probably thinking it is getting to be a pain to manage and even worse finding or searching for items, considering alot are generically names from packages Ive acquired (i.e. 132456.eps. flower00234.jpg, etc.)  Bridge helps alot but I am trying to catergorize and keyword folders or images this as clean as possible hopefully thru manually doing it on a system recommended or using a 3rd party software to apply metadate like keywords that will be searchable is IDEAL!
    I am starting to use Lightroom 3 to manage and catalog my StockPhotos (not to many), but love the functionality of the keyword and meta data features within LR.
    So that is what I am trying to accompish:
    1. organize all my art in to specific catergories
    2. hopefully use metadata and keywords within the OS or a 3rd party program to make items easily searchable within the Finder or Adobe Bridge.
    3. Properly manage and store art as it comes to me several times a day to keep everything current so I can do a backup of just my Design files, every month or so to keep stored off computer or on the cloud.
    Any suggestions(software/procedures), links, or general help on this issue is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks Again for any help lended!!! Any anyone that is willing to help me thru this and is interested in Graphic Design tools or graphics, I can definitely share ANYTHING from my collection for helping
    Drew

    Dont mind one bit, if i can pass along any advice to help someone, Im happy to do so.
    first off....My art catalog is mass collections of various file types, and media uses, so I started by keywording by some of these keywords; Vector, Web Graphics, Stock Photos, Patterns (Vector/Raster), Textures, Backgrounds, Shapes/Objects (vector/Raster), and after indifiying a sorting the various files, just in folders and sub-folders, under one main Artwork Directory, and that helped me organize them for transfering between my home office, to my work server.  After that it was pretty much a breeze except for one issue I ran into (I will explain at the end).  Since I run Bridge at Work and at home, the structure and navigation to search for files by catergory was alot easier, by mimicking the same setup on both Bridge for PC at work and Bridge for Mac at home.  the last step I did to help refine things a little better, I keyworded two things within Bridge to make the search faster, and it was just these tags, Vector, Raster High Res, Raster Med-Low Res. I also use the ranking/star system to tag my most used, favorite.  1 star for frequently used, and 5 star for my favorite art packages. When I use the word "favorite", in my terms that is art that i see potential to use in future designs and good clean art that Ive never used, so I can incorporate new designs.  That might not be the best way to do it in Bridge, but after bouncing around alot of approaches this eems to work just fine for my graphic/web design needs.
    One more thing that I do as I acquire new art, is make a Folder with a custome icon to stand out, that is labeled Un-Catergorized art.  And as I download art unless I use it right away, I drag and drop into that folder.  I was advised to not do this and label and file appropriately as soon as I aquire stuff so I dont get behind, but to aleviate that, I have made automator actions that move all files that have been in the folder for more than 5 days to move into a diferent folder (Delete Me), and have put an automation on that folder to delete files that are 3 days or older (in that folder).  It may sound like alot of work just to remind, but by adding another automator action in Mac OSX to email me when the first move is made, It trained my mind to process all new art every friday like clock work, and have since stop using the email action and the delete after 3 days action!  With the size of my library....getting close to 60gig....and consisting of a wide array of different media, I found this to work for my workflow.
    Give this a thought, because this may help you in some way, but everyones catalog is different.
    The only current problem/issue that I am trying to resolve at the moment is catergorizing and tagging (somehow) all my Creative Suite Plugins for PS, and LR.  Because it is getting pretty extensive, with patterns, actions, swatches, shapes, styles, etc...
    The issue I ran into with processing VECTOR art in Bridge CS5, was the lack of support for previwing .EPS files, and took a good chunk of my vector art and converted to a native AI file to be able to view the preview in bridge, but there is work arounds I found.
    Bridge has really been awesome for someone like me, and learn something new about this robust program everyday.
    As far as PS & LR plugins, I could theroretically just add everything I get to their respective plugin system folder on my drive, but I move them around alot and found it easier to search my folder structure and COPY/PASTE plugins in the system folder as needed and clean out the system plugin folder every so often.
    I just installed CS5.5 Master Collection last night, and even though Bridge isn't the same build as the changed DW 5.5, and indesign 5.5 (all the rest of the master collection for the most part NOTHING changed, even though its labeled as 5.1 instead of 5.0 or 5.5.  So I will be doing some research on this to see if any new features were added in Bridge but doubt it
    Hope this helps! and feel free to ask anymore questions

  • Query Designer: Need help.

    Hi All,
    This is regarding query issue.
    Is this the right forum for this issue or is there a forum for that?
    Kindly tell me where should i post this kind of issue.
    BTW, below is my issue. I'm finding it hard resolving the defect.
    Needs advice on this issue.
    The user wants a record for a certain organization.
    He/she input all the required parameters.
    Let's say:
    Business leader ID: XXX01
    Begin date: 2010, 2011
    End date: 2010, 2011
    Status: Active
    After executing the report, it returns all of the necessary data records.
    But when he click on variable screen or change selection, then changes "ONLY" the Business leader ID.
    It goes:
    Business leader ID: XXY02
    Begin date: 2010, 2011
    End date: 2010, 2011
    Status: Active
    No Applicable Data were returned.
    User closes the report the reopen.
    He initially entered again with the second ID, parameters now are initially:
    Business leader ID: XXY02
    Begin date: 2010, 2011
    End date: 2010, 2011
    Status: Active
    Then necessary records were returned.
    Question: why is it not returning any data records when he/she change the Business leader ID?
    That problem arises only when Business Leader ID was being changed.
    But when he/she change selection and change the filter on Begin Date, End Date, Status, the report still provide the data.
    The report is not refreshing only when Business Leader ID was being changed.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    You have to check it in your Bex Designer what kind of filter have given report.  I think the variable which are user entering the value in the initial screen which may for hard filter.
    Open your query in designer and give the details of Variable screen would be very much easy to identify the issue.
    Just try this
    V1 is the variable for  Business leader ID: XXX01
    V2 is the variable for  Begin date: 2010, 2011
    V3 is the variable for  End date: 2010, 2011
    V4 is the variable for  Status: Active
    Except V1 variable all can be included in hard filter and Include V1 as restriction.
    Hope this will help you to close the issue .. if you need any further assistance , please give the screen shot of your report in bex designer.
    Thanks

  • Phonebook directory design, need help, picts attached in zipfile

    Hi. I am needed some serious help and consulting on a indesign CS4 on Mac question with a directory I am building out.
    The phonebook listings goes as follows:
    The previous designer's file has the Name justified to the left it seems with the address and city abbreviation following. Then the phone number always justifies to the right and in between the city abbreviation and the phone number is a varying amount of periods that perfectly make the phone number justified to the right everytime.
    They fill the space perfectly and are not typed in but are somehow automated. What is this and how did they do this?
    I have tried Data Merge and other things and do not see how to do this in Indesign CS4. Is this a special plugin and do you know one that will do this? Thanks
    I attached 2 screen grabs and a pdf of a example page. Your help is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Brandon

    Without looking at the files, I can tell you that probably no-one can tell you how the document is created by just looking at the files.
    ... a varying amount of periods that perfectly make the phone number justified to the right everytime. They fill the space perfectly and are not typed in but are somehow automated.
    Type some words. Insert a tab. Type a phone number.
    Now call up the Tab ruler. If you see lots of tabs already defined, select "Clear all" in the Tab ruler panel menu.
    Click in the ruler as far to the right as you can -- a new tab arrow should appear. While it's still selected, click the 'right-align' tab in the left side of the panel (the selected tab arrow should change). With that tab arrow still selected, enter a period in the "Leader" field and press Enter.
    All of this should of course be done in a paragraph style, so it's applied automatically.

  • Web Application Designer need help ASAP

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement to customize the analysis item in a web application designer.
    I have created new templetes and added a analysis with a query view as data provider .
    in the output I require to hide some rows of the query view and also change the color of the text i.e the numbers.
    How to modify the output of the analysis item which is coming from a query view or is there any way where I can modify the output of the web templete.
    Thanking You,
    Rukmini

    Dear Devi,
    If you do not want to use the default display and behavior of the Analysis Web item, you can use the Modification parameter to change them. You can modify the table structure and the table cells.
    The Modification parameter provides modules whose use can be controlled using additional parameters.
    This function enables you to use similar options to those available in earlier releases with the Web Design API for Tables. Unlike the Web Design API for Tables, modifications enable you to make targeted changes to the display and behavior without any programming.
    Prerequisites
    The modules are the main prerequisites for making modifications to the Analysis Web item. The modules are implemented in Java. The SAP Basis infrastructure in SAP NetWeaver 7.0 does not support any customer modifications or extensions to Java coding. Customers are therefore not able to develop their own modules for modifications to the Analysis Web item.
    SAP delivers a number of sample modules. You can use parameters to modify the display and behavior of these modules.
    Procedure
    You use the modules as follows:
           1.      Select a module from the sample modules.
           2.      Specify the module in the Modification parameter of the Analysis Web item.
           3.      Control the display and behavior of the module by specifying the module-specific parameters.
    Result
    The table of the Analysis Web item is displayed in an individual manner using the modules. The behavior of the table may also be different. For example, you can define commands for table cells.
    Example
    For example, you can define a fixed column width or display comments in cells.

  • First Design - Need Help

    Hello all,
    Not sure if this is the correct section but here it goes,
    I am currently tasked with designing a hierarchical network for a small business. This is the first time I have had to design any network and I don’t know really where to start. What I am looking for is some sort of step-by-step documentation that covers headings and what should be included in the written material of the project. The first one is addressing table, but where else do i go from there. I need to document everything in the project related to this network design.
    Has anyone come across any documents like this? I have found the following documents to use as information but it does not give you a project layout as such. An Example design project might be handy.
    Documents Found
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Campus/Borderless_Campus_Network_1.0/Borderless_Campus_1.0_Design_Guide.pdf

    Hi James
    I guess for me to start an efficient design I would be following the below doc layout:
    1. Introduction
    This can include information about the customer, this network and this network is used for what purpose.
    2. Network Architecture
    Include two sections within this.
    Section 1: Provide Current network info with diagrams.
    Section 2: Provide a high level view of the new network, show various layers of the network that you will be using.
    3. Physical Network Design
    Here you must give a brief intro of the various products that are being used and their role in the new network. You can also show some card placements etc here if you have a distributed chassis in the network. Product intro can be found at: "http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/index.html"
    4. Logical Network Design (Now the Actual work starts ;))
    Various sections to be included.
    Section 1: Naming - include router names, vlan naming conventions etc.
    Section 2: IP Addressing details - include IP addressing details for all layers and every required IP address. Remember to take a big block to allow for future growth for every such device/link to be added.
    Section 3: VLAN Distribution - include the various vlans, their usage, and the devices which will have the VLANs configured.
    Section 4: IOS Versions: If you are also deciding IOS versions, better is to use this section to list all such OS here. You may goto "http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp" to look for the idle software.
    Section 5: Access Layer: Add everything about the Access layer here, like STP etc or if you are desiging a L3 based access then the IGP etc.. you may need to add sub-sections here.
    Section 6: Aggregation Layer: Same as section 5.
    Section 7: Core Layer: Same as section 5.
    Section 8: WAN Layer or Service Layer etc...
    5. HA
    Add details about how redundancy and resiliency is maintained in the network.
    6. QOS
    Add details about QOS in all the three layers.
    7. Application/ Services
    Add details about the various applications/services that will be using this network and try to include diagrams showing the complete traffic flow for the service within the network to the outside world.
    8. System Administration
    Add details about Syslog, TACACS, SNMP etc...
    9. Security
    Add details about how u use various techniques to secure the network , like ACL on VTY for management access etc..
    Note: It is always best to include as much diagrams as possible so that the users can relate it to the text that you have written.
    Happy Desiging In case you need anything else do let me know.
    Thanks

  • Rookie Web Designer Needs Help!

    I am working to set up my web site, but have three questions. I need to say that I know absolutely nothing about HTML code/editing, so a lot of what I have looked at in discussions has been like a foreign language to me!! Help!!
    Questions:
    1) I am trying to claim my blogs with technorati.com, but in order to do so I need to be able to "select the edit HTML button" then post code they have set up to cut and paste. I have been unsuccessful, and am assuming that I this has to do with needing to utilize HTML in a way other than the automatic hyperlinks that are available through iWeb. How can I accomplish this task? I am trying to allow their spiders to visit the page so I can increase the likelihood that interested individuals can find my site.
    2) How can I adjust my hyperlinks to open in new windows instead of the same window?
    3) Right now my site address is http://web.mac.com/teachabroadministry/iWeb/Site/Home.html Is there anyway to make this simpler (ie. teachabroadministry.com or something like that?)
    Thanks for any help you can give me with these quesitons!!
    Tod Wood

    Yes I did. Yahoo has some pros and cons. The Control Panel in Yahoo is very simple, compared to 1&1, and a quick check of Yahoo shows some features that weren't available prior to my switching. I had great difficulty uploading to Yahoo using Fetch, and I never did sort that out; may not have been Yahoo's fault. (I'll never know!
    I can upload very quickly and easily to 1&1, they offer 25 free subdomains with each domain name, and you have a lot of free features Yahoo doesn't have. (To my knowledge). Basic CGI's ( I use the free forum for my blog), chat rooms, and Webstats, to name a few.
    For the money, I don't think you can beat them.

  • Graphic problem need help A.S.A.P.

    The class below called "IconGen" will not display the graphic it is suppose to when I call it into a main and add it to a JPanel. If someone could tell me why this code doesn't produce a graphics I would be greatly appreciative.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class IconGen extends JComponent{
    private     Color salmon = new Color(255,128,128);
                   Polygon p = new Polygon();
    IconGen(){
                   int[] x = {75,125,75,25};
                   int[] y = {25,75,125,75};
                   int pts = 4;
                   Polygon p = new Polygon(x,y,pts);
    public void paintComponent(Graphics2D g2){
                   super.paint(g2);
                   g2.setPaint(salmon);
                   g2.fillPolygon(p);
    }

    I rearraged and modified your layout code a little bit.
    Here is the working code:
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    public class Simple {
       public static void main(String args[]){
          JFrame jf = new JFrame("IconGen"); //Begin JFrame setup.
          jf.addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter(){
          public void windowClosing(WindowEvent e){
          System.exit(0);}
          jf.setSize(200,200);
          jf.setBackground(Color.gray);
          jf.setVisible(true); //End JFrame setup.
          JPanel jp = new JPanel(); //Begin JPanel setup.
          IconGen i = new IconGen("Hostile"); //Instantiate IconGen.
          jp.setLayout(new GridLayout(1,1));
          jp.add(i); //Add IconGen to JPanel.
          jp.setSize(200,200);
          jp.setBackground(Color.white); //End JPanel setup.
          jf.getContentPane().add(jp); //Add JPanel to JFrame.
          jf.pack();
          jf.setSize(200,200);
          jf.show();
          jp.repaint();
    }  IconGen again. I added a constructor.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class IconGen extends JComponent{
       private Color salmon = new Color(255,128,128);

       IconGen(){
          int[] x = {75,125,75,25};
          int[] y = {25,75,125,75};
          int pts = 4;
          p = new Polygon(x,y,pts);
          repaint();
       public void paintComponent(Graphics g){
          Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D)g;
          g2.setPaint(salmon);
          g2.fill(p);

  • IMac for a Graphic Designer?

    I am currently shopping for a new iMac system for my Graphic Design needs and would like to get feed back form the community on a few topics. I am thinking about getting the 21.5 iMac with 8GB's of ram.
    Would this be enough to handle Photoshop, Illustrator, and Cinema 4D softwares? I am going to get a external hard drive to store my files on to save hard drive space, any recommendations for that?
    Is there an option to upgrade the ram in the 21.5 iMac to say 32 GB's (as I heard you could)? I am currently using a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with 4GB of ram and it's beginning to lag a bit. The screen size isn't really that great either being it's only 15 inches.
    So any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    - KidHTML

    As you have a specific and well-defined need I would work backwards:
    Determine what software applications you will need, then figure out which model and configuration of iMac can handle them in the best possible/fastest way, particularly if you have them all open at once.
    Also, depending on what kind of graphics you deal with, decide what screen size you really need.
    Then talk to your bank!

  • Graphic Design major needs help choosing a Mac!

    I'm a Graphic Design student, and I'm about to purchase my first Macbook Pro. I need to know the minimum specs my Mac needs, without sacrificing performance. I'll be running multiple Applications/Programs simultaneously without stalling or crashing. (ie: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Internet with lots of tabs, music, and occassionally whatever program they'll use for my animation class.) I have a MyBook external terabyte, so saving large projects won't be an issue. Also, I kind of want to have an internal CD/DVD drive, but if that sacrifices performance way too much, I can get an external.
    I've been offered this used MBP that is one year old, for a reduced price, http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/  (See the specs for the 13" for $1199), but will it be enough? Even if I buy more RAM and install it myself, will the processor be fast enough? Will everything else be enough?
    Here's the link comparing all the new MBP's, http://www.apple.com/why-mac/compare/notebooks.html , some of which can be upgraded for an additonal price. Is it necessary to purchase one of these? Which one? Is Retina Display necessary? Performance is more important to me than money, but I don't want to just get an excessive amount of GHz, RAM, etc...that I won't even need. Can anyone help?

    Your link to the Best Buy MBP does not work for me but I looked on the best but website and found the only 17" MBP, model MC725LL/A, which is an early 2011 MBP.  It does not say which CPU it has, a 2.2 GHz or 2.3 GHz.  Either way the price is the most attractive.
    If this is left over and not an open box, it probably represents the best value in that respect.  I would establish if it is really new and what CPU it has before committing any funds.  I note it has Snow Leopard as the OS which has been supplanted by Lion and Mt. Lion.  You might think that this is a negative, but it really is not.  You may always install Mt. Lion at a later date ($20) if you feel you have to.  I have a late 2011 17" MBP which came with Lion and I have also installed Snow Leopard on it.  Snow Leopard is the most efficient OS that Apple has offered and I do not consider obsolete by any means.
    Though Apple says that 8 GB RAM is the maximum, all 2011 MBPs will accommodate 16 GB.  I have that in my MBP.
    There is one point that you should seriously consider. That Is the Glossy vs. the Anti-glare display.  It would be best that you go to an Apple store and look at them side by side in order to make an informed decision.  I have a MBP with the Glossy display, my first one, which I like but the second one I got has the Anti-glare and that in my opinion is the more practical.  The newest one is also Anti-glare.  I have heard it said by serious photographers that the colors are more accurate on the Ant-glare displays.  It may be worth the price differential, but you have to decide.  (That is another item that should be determined with the Best Buy option)
    If you have any additional questions, just ask!
    Ciao.

    Farooq,
    If you look at the first one, you should be able to align quite easily as follows, View>Smart Guides being your friends:
    1a) ClickDrag the top flower with the Selection Tool (black arrow) so it is clear of the pointy part;
    1b) Click an empty spot on the Artboard to deselect, then ClickDrag the top flower by its bottom Anchor Point (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough to grab it) down to snap to the top Anchor Point on the pointy part (Smart Guides say anchor when you are close enough);
    1c) Do the same for the boroom flower.
    If you look at the third one, to get the triangles and the hexagon sized and aligned precisely, you may, creating them with stroke and no fill:
    3a) Click with the Polygon Tool and select a suitable/chosen Radius and 6 Sides, then Object>Transform>Rotate by 30 degrees (or use the Rotate option in the Transform palette), you may Object>Transform>Reset Bounding Box to have it look nicer;
    3b) Click with the Polygon Tool and select the same Radius and 3 sides, then deselect and ClickDrag the top Anchor Point to snap to the top Anchor Point of the hexagon;
    3c) Object>Transform>Rotate by 180 degrees clicking Copy, deselect, and ClickDrag the bottom Anchor Point to snap to the bottomAnchor Point of the hexagon;
    3d) Select all and Ctrl/Cmd+G to Group (for alignment purposes, you will know why if you try without grouping, see below).
    To create full symmetry, you may use circles rather than almost circular ellipses; you may:
    3d) Click with the Ellipse Tool and select a suitable/chosen Width = height;
    3e) Object>Transform>Move a copy vertically by the Height (= Width) twice (or you may Ctrl/Cmd+D to repeat), to get three circles over one another with no gaps;
    3f) Select the topmost and bottommost ones and Object>Transform>Rotate a copy by 120 degrees twice, to have all the seven circles precisley touching one another; you may Group them, but it is not necessary.
    To have everything aligned, just:
    3g) Select everything and click Vertical Align Center and Horizontal Align Center in the Align palette; you may click the pointy group or the circles ojnce more before aligning if you want to keep it in place (that will make it the key object that the other set is aligned to).
    These ways may also help you further.
    Edit: About half an hour after midnight here. High time to attend to other duties, before the sun is up.
