Graphical Sudo

Hi,
I'm looking for something that will create a sudo popup when using graphical applications for example:
If i open an archive file with xarchiver and would like to drag it with the mouse to a certain dir opened in thunar and it doesn't have permissions i want a popup asking for my password for sudo and perform the operation.
I only managed to find gksu as an option to run graphical applications with sudo but i need something automatic that will popup on specific situations and parameters.
Is there such a thing?

Yes, because the number of files you manually copy to the root filesystem---and the occasions on which you do so---should be very, very few.
I gonna need some more information regarding what are you talking about and why\how.
This isn't the first time you've copied errant files this way, is it?

Selecting Number of Groups for Group Dimension

Hello Folks,
We are having a peculiar situation here in selecting on how many Consolidation Groups we should maintain inside Group Dimension.
Client is expecting Financial Statements at 10 Holding Companies but want to do Consolidation only at highest Level.
Does this mean in my Entity Dimension I find 10 C_Entities but when it comes to Group I have only 1 Value for the Highest Holding Company.
Do you think what I am doing is right or you wish me to maintain 10 Consolidation Groups in Group Dimension for any reason.
We are going for Legal Matrix Consolidation by Company Code, Profit Centers here.
This is very urgent Please advise.

I'm getting this error when using WICD.

Failed to find a graphical sudo program, cannot continue.
I tried to find the wicd config files in /etc/wicd but could not find them. I also cannot seem the find the log file that the error message is telling me to look at.
I have installed:

I tried this earlier and Arch doesn't recognise the commands. I think that is a Debian command(Correct me if I'm wrong). I also assume that uninstalling it a reinstalling it would do the rconfigure but it it dosen't someone let me know how to auto reconfigure.
Also I went into my daemon log and saw some falures. The problem looks like it might be ConsoleKit. I have reinstalled ConsoleKit and still getting errors.

[solved] sudo: No password needed before graphical login?

Yesterday I was messing around a bit with SLiM. I didn't configure any sessions for it however, so I was forced to login trough a VT.
The funny thing is, on the VT, before loging in with a graphical manager, sudo didn't ask for a password. This was also the case when I using gdm. After I logged on to a graphical desktop, sudo would also ask for a password in de VT.
My /etc/sudoers:

On my machine sudo 'remembers' me for up to five minutes so if you had used sudo just prior to that time this might be what is happening.
from sudo man page:
Once a user has been authenticated, a timestamp is updated and the user may
then use sudo without a password for a short period of time (5 minutes unless
overridden in sudoers).
Otherwise, I am not sure.

[SOLVED]Unable to run Graphical applications as root/sudo

Ok so ive been working on getting my very first Arch install up and running and I need to get the catalyst drivers running for my HD6850 because I plan on doing some wine gaming.
So I followed the instructions here on the wiki for ATI catalyst and I now have the drivers up and running, tried glxgears and everything is fine. The issue I am having Is that when I go under the settings menu in KDE I have the "AMD Catalyst control center" there, however I do not have the (Administrative) option that I get with all other distros. I need to run the CCC as root to beable to configure my multiple monitors.
In a terminal when i enter;
sudo amdcccle
It returns with the following;
No protocol specified
amdcccle: cannot connect to X server :0
So after a little digging I found this thread on the ubuntu forums that was quite helpful;

So I ran
DISPLAY=:0.0 xhost +
then tried again to run
sudo amdcccle
and like magic it worked and I was able to configure my displays.
However this is not a permanent fix. Can anyone see a more permanent solution to this issue? This affects more than just the Catalyst Control Center; It stops me from running any graphical application as root or with sudo. Also can anyone explain what is causing the issue?
I have searched to the best of my ability and as you can see I have for the most part fixed the issue, however I cannot seem to find a permanent fix, nor do I really know what caused the issue to begin with.

SOLVED
I took your advice about installking something like gksudo, and rememberd that on my kubuntu install I had something called kdesu. So Since im running KDE and not Gnome, I did some searching and found out how to install kdesudo using the AUR.
Just followed the install guide here for Yaourt ---> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Yaourt
Once I did that i just ran
yaourt kdesudo
selcted #1 and installed.
Now when I need to run a GUI based app as root I type in
kdesu <NAME OF APP>
So to solve my original issue I just run
kdesu amdcccle
instead of
sudo amdcccle
This seems to work for any app that needs to be ran a root with a GUI.
Also if your like me and you want to beable to just open CCC from your kickoff menu then do the following;
1. Right click kickoff > edit applications
2. Go to "Settings" > ATI Catalyst Control Center
3. In the Command Field add "kdesu" without quotes to the begining of the line so it looks like this
kdesu amdcccle
4. Save

In either early or late KMS start, essentially what I see during boot is the boot messages starting to get drawn from the top of the screen, at some point they briefly stop being drawn (as if services are still loading) and then continue until the screen's height is filled, when the screen flashes blank and new messages get drawn from the top. I also see random pixels appear singly all over the screen, in different colours. This behaviour happened when I was first running the Arch installation, until I realised that KMS might be the problem and added "nomodeset" (and later "i915.modeset=0", which made no difference) to the kernel parameters. However, before booting into my Arch pendrive, the laptop booted into a sort of windows installer / agreement signing (in UEFI, presumably) which did get rendered correctly.
This potentially leads me to think that, before I nuked the existing partitions in readiness for my Arch install, there was some firmware or driver in there that made the HD 5500 just work™. Could this be true? I'm still getting my head around UEFI and what it lets you do. With this in mind, I tried making a new EDID to give the GPU a good idea of what kind of screen it should be drawing to, but that made no difference.
Strangely, if I boot up with KMS and get to X (with root doing startx on the stock configuration), neither /var/log/Xorg.0.log nor glxinfo seem to think anything's the matter from what I can tell:

I tried boteium's suggestion to force xrandr to redraw things (or signal them to get redrawn, however it works) by rotating the picture, but I still had the same weirdness of slow drawing, random coloured pixels and now "smudging" with the open xterm instances. It's as if hardware acceleration is not enabled and, I imagine, the GPU is blindly trying to draw whatever it can to the screen without preparing the complete picture first (if that's what they do at all).

Sorry to double-post, but I'm coming around to the idea that it's a UEFI issue. My understanding now is that, if I want to use UEFI, the kernel's EFISTUB needs to be loaded by certain EFI firmware that gives the kernel information about the hardware, which I unfortunately lost when creating my partitions. The only EFI file I have in /boot is "/boot/EFI/gummiboot/gummibootx64.efi". Should this be enough to boot as UEFI? Am I understanding this right? Something else that makes me think I'm missing some essential stuff that was originally installed, is that some items as reported by dmidecode say "To be filled by O.E.M.". Since I've just bought this system pre-built from an OEM, I would have thought that they'd fill that in, and that the EFI firmware is the place to do it.
Also, one thing I forgot to mention above is that I changed the BIOS setting Advanced→Launch PXE OpROM policy from "Legacy" to "UEFI" before booting into the Arch iso. Could this have anything to do with KMS not working (during the installation and until now)? I didn't try booting with "Legacy", but if we could confirm that booting as UEFI is what broke KMS during installation, maybe that could be worth mentioning in the wiki.

OVERVIEW:
I've been working on (and succeeded in) getting Colin Bennett's code http://grub.gibibit.com/ to run in Arch. I hadn't seen it elsewhere, even from the major distros (except ubuntu's launchpad https://code.launchpad.net/~colinb/grub/gfxmenu ). I've only seen legacy grub wallpaper mods (grub-gfxboot) and animation patches (grub-gfxmenu, which the ubuntu2 theme and my hack theme mimic btw), not THIS grub2 mod. So, I figured I might as well try to get it working. The good news is, it appears to be slowly merging into the official grub2.
Non-Arch distros: All of this can be done on a non-Arch distro in a similar way. Instead of using the given makepkg commands, you would need to manually handle dependencies listed in my PKGBUILD files (the right Ruby stuff is especially important; it will compile without ruby, but not correctly) and then use the typical "./configure; make; sudo make install" (or your distro's standard packaging method if you want to do that) on the source tarballs listed in the PKGBUILD source=() lines. If you have no idea what any of that jargon means, you should ask on your OS's forums and I'm sure someone will assist you. Non-Arch distros can also grab the theme tarballs from http://hateanthem.dreamhosters.com/arch/build/ and either extract them to /boot/grub/themes/ or package them for your OS if you can (I'm sure others will appreciate it). If you do so, you are welcome to send them to me if you wish and I can put them up on the same server as all of these files. For those of you on Ubuntu, to answer your question: no, Ubuntu's grub2 does not have gfxmenu capabilities yet. Either wait for it to be merged into grub2 or ask someone to package this for you (be sure to mention when you are asking however that grub2-gfxmenu is not the same as just grub, grub2, grub-gfx, grub-gfxboot, or grub-gfxmenu, as there is understandable confusion to the difference). As for troubleshooting, most of the troubleshooting here will also work on other distributions except for pacman commands, which you would need to deal with yourself accordingly (fyi, pacman -U installs a local Arch package; you would sudo make install or dpkg -i somePackage or rpm -i somePackage or whatever in your case).

1) During grub-install, you get a nag about not being able to read /boot/grub/core.img
* I think this is fixed in a grub2 svn release, so hopefully the next grub2-gfxmenu will remove this section..
* Two methods.. both are hackish, but either 'works'.. I prefer Method 2, but it's more work + empty space..
* METHOD #1:
* This installs grub to your root partition instead of /boot (method obviously assumes a Split Boot):
* It will obviously not properly coincide with pacman installs/updates of grub2-gfxmenu stuff normally
* You can unmount /boot to upgrade/install grub2-gfxmenu stuff for now with pacman

* Your old grub folder is still on your /boot partition; I think it may be moved to avoid confusion
* If you move/remove the grub partition on ROOT (until properly installed of course), grub will break

6) Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg before you reboot; follow the tutorial otherwise
7) Be sure to re-mount /boot if you're not going to reboot after this tutorial / installing gfxmenu stuff

* This installs grub2-gfxmenu "correctly", but puts a little empty space in front of your /boot partition
1) Boot into a LiveCD and resize your /boot partition; graphically (gparted) or CLI if you know how
* I decreased its size by 10 megs, which is likely MAJOR overkill, but it worked, and I can spare 10mb
2) Move the resized partition to the right, so the space you freed up is in front of it
3) Boot into the Arch LiveCD if you aren't there already, and go root
4) mkdir /mnt/root
5) mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/root (assuming sda3 is your root partition)
6) mount -t proc proc /mnt/root/proc
7) mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/root/sys
8) mount -o bind /dev /mnt/root/dev
9) chroot /mnt/root /bin/bash
10) mount /dev/sda1 /boot (assuming sda1 is /boot.. you can mount /home now too, if needed)
11) pacman -U /path/to/grub2-gfxmenu*pkg.tar.gz (only if its the only grub2-gfxmenu pkg there)
12) pacman -U /path/to/kernel26*pkg.tar.gz (only if its the only kernel pkg there)
13) Edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg before you reboot; follow the tutorial otherwise
2) During grub-install, you get a nag about /dev/fd0 or something of the sort
* Your device map is wrong; edit /boot/grub/device.map accordingly and remove/edit such incorrect entries

System crashes after waking; problems with distnoted, graphics chip error

I am running 10.3.9 on a Dual 1 GHz G4, with 1.5 GB SDRAM, a GeForce4 Ti 4600 LCD display, and a LaCie 1394 external drive. I have recently started to put my computer to sleep at night, rather than leaving it running 24 hours a day (I also installed sleepwatcher, to allow me to put my computer to sleep remotely, and anacron, to allow the nightly system maintenance jobs to continue to run). This was working fine for about a week, but for the last two days, when I woke my computer up in the morning, I got kernel panics after a few minutes. First some aspects of the display would start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, some text that I typed not showing up, icons in the dock looking speckled, etc.), then some applications would stop responding, and then a minute or so later I would get the feared kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer" in multiple languages).
This problem only seems to occur after the computer has been asleep for a long time (I've only experienced it after it's been asleep for 12 hours or so, and not when it's only been asleep for a few minutes). The only thing I can think of that I've changed in the last few days is an AppleScript that mounts my external LaCie drive (using "do shell script diskutil mountDisk ...") before backing up my files - using FoldersSynchronizer - then putting my computer to sleep (before I was never UNmounting this drive, so I didn't have to mount it in the AppleScript - I was still using the script to back up the files then put the computer to sleep).
I have tried running Apple's Disk Utility (both to repair the permissions, and to repair the disk), DiskWarrior (to rebuild my startup disk), fsck, and TechTool Deluxe. None seemed to reveal any major errors except the "Surface Scan" in TechTool, which failed, presumably because of media defects in the disk (but my understanding is that fixing this would require reformatting my disk, something that I only want to do as a last resort).
My system.log shows the following, from the time I woke my computer to the time I restarted (I've highlighted some suspicious-looking lines). It seems like the problem might either be occurring in distnoted, or with the graphics chip. Any thoughts on how I can determine the cause of the problem?

Yesterday's crash looks similar, except that the Graphics chip error occurs 13 seconds before the distnoted error (rather than after the distnoted error), and rather than a crash of "MouseWorks Background" there was a crash of "WindowServer". I will continue to test the effects of changing various aspects of my configuration, but since I can only get the problem to occur once a day (after my computer has been asleep for a while), it might take me a few days or weeks to track the problem down through blind trial-and-error.

After a little experimentation, I've managed to narrow the problem down a little, but still haven't resolved it. My computer still crashes almost every time I wake it up after a long sleep (multiple hours). Things work fine for a few minutes, but then some aspects of the display start to get mangled (e.g. strange lines appearing, text becoming distorted, etc.), then some applications start crashing and the system hangs. Sometimes I get a kernel panic, but not always - but I always need to reboot to solve the problem.
The errors in the system log files differ from crash to crash, but the one thing that seems to be consistent is that I get a "Graphics chip error". Is this usually a hardware problem, or can it be due to a software problem? Sometimes this graphics chip error is the first error to occur, although sometimes an application will crash a few seconds before the graphics chip error is recorded in the system.log.
In my original post, I suggested that the problem might be due to an AppleScript that mounts an external drive. I have since determined that this is NOT the cause of the problem.
Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Xorg Problem - Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

Hello.
I've encountered a problem while installing my Xorg server, which I'd like to use with KDE.
Here's the track of my xorg installation:
# sudo pacman -Syu
# sudo pacman -S xorg
(my graphic card is vVidia GeForce 8600 GT)
# sudo pacman -S nvidia-96xx nvidia-96xx-utils
# sudo nvidia-xconfig
(that's where I wanted to check if I did everything right)
#sudo startx
Xorg started loading and after a few secs it printed such output:

1. wrong driver. the 96xx driver is for horrible old hardware, like the gf4. Install 'nvidia' and 'nvidia-utils' instead.
2. don't use nvidia-xconfig, it's not needed.
3. reboot after installing the driver if you havn't disabled kms already.

YOSEMITE SLOW, GRAPHIC PROBLEM & MORE..

I have problem with everything in my mac. Safari is slow and lags. I need to w8 much time to open my apps like; iTunes, Steam, App store, finder and more. I have graphic problems, fps prob, yosemite need a lot of CPU and memory. Someone has the same problem? Need 7-10 min to turn on my mac. Will be resolved with an update? Sorry for my bad english, I'm italian.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Kernel update (3.9.5-1) causes graphics issues, X11 "no screens found"

Earlier I updated my system with pacman -Syu. Everything went smoothly. I rebooted and immediately noticed something was wrong with the console framebuffer - printing and scrolling are very, very slow and jerky, an error flashed by after fsck too quickly to read (since disappeared), and startx gave me the "no screens found" error. I do not have any custom X11 configuration.
This is an MSi laptop with the (awful) nVidia Optimus (hardware mux).
IGP is an Intel Ivybridge Mobile (GT2), don't know the exact chipset model, X logs indicate it's the i965.
DGP is an NVIDIA GK104M (GeForce GTX 675MX).
(New) Kernel: 3.9.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT ... x86_64
(Old) Kernel: 3.9.4-1 ...
I should mention that I use the acpi_call package to shut the DGP down, the command runs automatically at boot (but does not work! An AE_CALL error message is given, I have to run the turn_off_gpu.sh script manually after login). Nouveau is still being loaded into the kernel, regardless. I have tried removing the .conf file used by acpi_call from /etc/modules-load.d/, there was no effect. I also tried downgrading from the latest xf86-intel driver package, again, no effect - under either kernel. Additionally I tried using nomodeset and i915.modeset = 1 kernel parameters (which were necessary with a previous kernel version or Arch was unbootable, but not with 3.9.4-1). No effect. Each change was followed by a reboot, just to be sure. Systemd is loading everything normally except that it complains of no display-manager service ... because there isn't one.
It may be trying to use the DGP, for which there are no drivers installed, as I have no desire to use that card with Linux, ever; I've no idea why/how a kernel update would change this, as I mentioned I have nothing fancy going on with kernel 3.9.4-1 and the graphics setup and X11 work just fine out of the box.

No, the i915.modeset parameter was necessary with an older kernel.
I've now also tried kernel 3.9.6-1 and nvidia drivers, with AND without an xorg 10-monitor.conf file. Running kernel 3.9.6-1 seems to fix the console framebuffer issue, but the "no screens found" issue remains, xserver logs complain of not being to find intel module when using nvidia drivers (which require removal of intel drivers), and both sudo and netctl are broken - logs list pam-unix "conversation failed" error and time-out/failed dependency waiting for wplXXX - the wireless NIC - to start.
Just to see, I tried the nvidia drivers with kernel 3.9.4-1 and got the "no screens found" error.
Because I couldn't access the internet under kernel 3.9.6-1, I didn't get to test it with nouveau but I can't see how that would be any different - it has no Optimus support, anyway.
One more probably unrelated thing: all indicator LEDs (except power button) and touch-button LEDs no longer light up, under 3.9.4-1 with no changes to packages in a few days.

How to set on-board graphics memory of my macbook?

I've installed Arch Linux in my macbook pro (2011 early 13inch).
I've upgraded RAM from 4G to 8G, and in OS X, this doubled graphics memory from 256MB to 512MB automatically.
However, in Arch Linux, the graphics memory is recognized only as 256MB which is original value before memory upgrading.
I wonder if I can adjust GRAM to expand it.

Hum, interesting. I have Intel HD4000 and 16GB of ram. I should have quite a lot of video ram, like 1GB.
It is very, very possible that we do have more video ram but what we are looking at is not telling us what we think it is. I was fairly sure that Intel Graphics did all it's video ram scaling stuff on it's own.

Intel graphic and gnome crash

Hi.
My father has laptop with intel graphic. Today I update system for him and system is crashing...I tried start gdm from console and startx and is the same... showing "something is wrong" and logout to console... any ideas what can be wrong ? What details do you need ? someone have problems with intel drivers ? or this is problem with gnome 3 ? or maybe systemd ?
any ideas ?

There is no problem with your graphics or screen.
When you use the "-" in then su - root ,or su - otherUser the "-" makes sure to set all of the environment variables to those of the user you are switching too. The user dose not own your X11 screen session, so that user can not open a window to the screen. This is a Security messure, to prevent some attacks, i.e. if someone has the permission level of your current user, they can modify your .profile or .bashrc and input an alias like...,
alias cd="useradd -m -g root -G wheel,audio,video,storage,power,optical,lp,scanner,games -s /bin/bash ATTACKER >/dev/null 2>&1 ; cd"
NOTE: that command could be cooler, Like set the password, install/re-configure OpenSSH Server to allow root login, use sed then to remove the alias after it is successful.... I'm going to bed now though, so I don't have the time to flesh it out.
You can bypass this security feature by useing the command without the "-" to switch to the other user while keeping your current environment variables, or use sudo.

Graphics Speedup

Another good reason for installing Developers Tools.
Most users read Apple's Tiger Promotional material and get excited about Quartz 2D Extreme. Few are the number of users who dig down in their OS only to be greatly disappointed to discover Apple has Quartz 2D Extreme is disabled when Tiger is installed by default. If you don't want to wait for Apple to throw the switch in a future software update, keep reading.
Run the Quartz Debug application, this will create a file called com.apple.windowserver.plist in your /Library/Preferences folder.
Quartz Debug will tell you that your mini does not support Quartz2DExtreme and you will not be able to enable it.
This is ok, let us hack the file in Terminal with the help of another of my favourite Developer Tools, Propery List Editor:

Now that we are running the Property List Editor as Root Equivalent we have all the permissions we require to open and save the changes to the file. Open the com.apple.windowserver.plist file. Expand the items, at the bottom is an item Quartz2DExtremeEnabled with a boolean value set to No. Change this to Yes and save the file. Any Tiger Mac that is rebooted will now have it switched on all the time.
Reboot your machine and observe how fast the screen gets repainted (Desktop, Dashboard, Create large icon and large font views inside Finder, etc.) I am running this mini at 1680x1050xMillions of colours.
I really need some decent benchmarking tools to test this out fully. For kicks, use the Quartz Debug application and turn on the Frame Meter for a little transparent Speedometer running in the corner of your screen.
I checked the logs for any crashes and saw a windowserver crash but it was a false alarm. it was a crash yesterday from the infamous graphics bugs and problems I have with Tiger in general on this machine. (Garbage graphics painted on application windows and screensavers etc. from time to time).
Note: Don't disable it via Quartz Debug or you will have to go in by hand again to edit the plist file on a Mini.

For "Developers Tools", do you mean XCode 2? Would you please tell me where I can find the Quartz Debug application?
I really like to try enabling the Quartz 2D Extreme of my mini...
Btw, in the "Graphics/Displays" section of System Profiler, will this make the "Quartz Extreme" to "Supported"?

by Developers Tools, its the option when you installed Tiger from the install DVD. I always put in X11 and Developer Tools because I need to compile ports of network analysers for work.
Quartz Debug can be found in /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools
FYI, there is some really groovy audio tools in there such as a digital mixing application that provides facilities for blending audio from the input of an audio device as well as audio generated by an Audio Unit Instrument or Generator. It can host Audio Unit effects and route audio through these effects. There are also support for mixing in Audio Sidechains and Buses. I paid decent money on the PC for an application like this that didn't do an 1/8th of the capabilities.

Gnome 3.12 cannot launch gnome-terminal with sudo

I am suffering from a problem that seems similar to the thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=180103 and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1402702 but since they are marked solved I am opening my own.
My real problem is I use this encrypted USB stick called an ironkey. Without going into too much detail, in order to unlock the encrypted partition on it I need to run an executable on it, typically like this:
sudo /run/media/ccooper/IronKey/linux/ironkey
I am getting the error

The ironkey launcher for some reason spawns a new terminal to ask for my passphrase, which is the problem.
I have narrowed it down to just being unable to launch gnome-terminal with sudo or as root.
So in summary, i can launch a gnome-terminal as my normal user, but not with sudo. I also cannot sudo -i and launch a gnome-terminal either.
I have run the localectl and localegen commands, as described as the "fix" but they do not help me.

can you please provide some details, for example your gnome version and if you have gnome-screensaver and or xscreensaver installed and or activated?
are you using GDM or lightDM?

Antergos using standart arch and AUR packages (managed by packman), I would say that Antergos is arch, just with graphical installer..
If you think that it's not arch, we can continue and argue about this fact, but I would like to concentrate on trying to understand and resolve the "blank screen" issue (that I believe is actually a gnome issue )
